Death Knell for the Generic Imperium

Generian International Breaking News:

In an utterly bizarre turn of events the Imperial Commerce advisor, Vladek Tatyanovich, declared today that the Imperial government is to become a publically traded company. This comes after the recent shock over the government declaring itself bankrupt from a series of so called "unwise financial practices." It is believed this title refers to a failed social welfare program implemented last month. Tatyanovich stated that he believes "making the government a publically traded company will greatly enhance government revenue, and the revenue of the nation's people as a whole." Emperor Vladimir Kreschnev, himself, is unavailable for questioning because of an illness that has kept him secluded since last month. Tatyanovich has been acting for the Emperor in the public office since the start of this illness. Tatyanovich is stated to be one of the Emperor's most trusted advisors, and the only man in the cabinet allowed to visit and advise the Emperor while he is bedridden.

This has been this evening GEI International breaking news broadcast.

--00--

General Yogi Czwetiszka snorted in disgust at the news bulletin and flicked the television set off. He turned to face the other men in the room.

"Imagine that, Tatyanovich is "advising" the Emperor now. We all know it was that bastard who made our beloved Kreschnev "ill" in the first place! And this corporate business! What will they think of next! We all know its just Tatyanovich trying to take power and net himself a few billion American dollars in the process. I think its high time someone stepped in and politely "removed" Mr. Tatyanovich from his esteemed position."

A skinny man in the corner eyed Czwetiszka suspiciously.

"Yogi, be careful what you say, friend. What you speak of is very high on the treason list. Tatyanovich is a trusted advisor, and you have no base for your accusations."

Yogi flared his nostrils and turned toward the other man, visibly angered by the comment.

"Sveshckin! What the hell are you saying! I always took you to be a reasonably intelligent man, and now you deny the obvious!? It is as clear as day that Tatyanovich wanted Kreschnev gone from the moment the economy started to pick up. Put the pieces togethor Josef! the Emperor takes ill, Tatyanovich steps in, a booming national economy takes a dive, for no reason whatsoever mind you, the government declares bankruptcy, and conveniently Tatyanovich is there with his solution to trade this nation publically when Syracorp, the company he OWNS is doing better than ever. Cant you see!? He's going to buy us out! The whole nation is going to hell, and you dont even realise it!

Sveschkin pulled on his cigar and a ring of smoke dissipated in the air.

"Now Vlad, relax. How do you know Tatyanovich isnt the one with the public government idea. Maybe it's not so bad after all. We could at least net ourselves a few thousand Generas."

Vladek stormed across the room and grabbed Sveschkin by his ornamented collar. He put his face right up to Sveschkins rather prominent nose.

"Now you listen to me, you Slavik son of a bitch, don't you sit over here and tell me I speak of treason when you spew this filth from that treasonous opening in your face. I don't care what Tatyanovich has you thinking, I love this Empire and its Emperor, and I will not sit around and see it go to waste at the hands of this greedy corporate megalomaniac. I don't know about anyone else here, but i intend to put a stop to this before we're trapped." Czwetiszka released the man's collar and stormed from the small room.

The other two men eyed each other.

"He has a point. Is rather suspicious, the whole Emperor-getting-sick business. Maybe we should listen to him."

General Josef Sveschkin shrugged his shoulders and took another pull from his cigar.

"He'll be back. He's one of us after all. Head of the bloody Generian military council. Can't have one of the four go missing, can we? Yes, he'll be back, one way or another.

The doors burst open to the Presidential Chambers in Grenval City. The Minister of Foreign Affairs rushed into teh well lit room, filled with paintings of the men who made Grenval a democracy.
"Mr. President, one of our allies has made the government go public. Generic Empire is now a publicly traded company," the Minister exclaimed!
"Well then buy them out," he laughed jovially.
"Your not serious sir," retorted the Minister.
"Of course not. Why not just contact the Emperor, see what he has to say?"
"He is bedridden, and allowed no visitors. Another man is truely in charge. There are rumors of rumors of rebellion."
"Then simply go with a 'We only wish the best for all and soverenity for our allies... blah, blah, blah."
"Yes sir," as the Minister left the room.

The boardroom of the Syracorp building in downtown Generia city was packed with executives. Vladek Tatyanovich sat presiding.

"Well gentlemen, we've done it. After two years of planning it is finally going to happen. The time is perfect to finally merge the private sector with public office." Tatyanovich and the other men laughed. "Tomorrow we will perform the largest corporate merger in the history of the free market economy. The whole state will become Syracorp in a single fell swoop of our corporate hammer. Gentlemen, I propose a toast!"

A butler walked up to Tatyanovich with a bottle of aged scotch. 12 other butlers did the same with the other men in the room.

"To Generia, to God, to Syracorp!"

--00--

The next day Syracorp made good on its promise. In the most outrageous corporate merger in history, Vladek Tatyanovich became CEO of the Generic Empire. The economy exloded, and the stock market averages climbed off the charts. Billions of dollars flew into the pockets of corporate executives all across the nation. Within the next two years, Generia changed dramatically, as the old empire dissolved. Skylines in Generia's major cities reached averages of 1,000 feet, the tallest skyscraper averaging an even 2,000 feet. The fortune 500 executives became the new aristocracy, while the poor were left mainly to rot in the city's lower levels and ancient buildings. During this two year time period, the government dissolved into shadow. It was unclear to any but the most informed people in the higher echelon, who was really pulling the strings. Vladek Tatyanovich became a creature of legend, having largely dissappeared after the first six months of his control of the nation. In truth, no one really cared about what happened to him, or the old system. It was taboo to mention the old Emperor's name. After Tatyanovich took power rumors circulated as to what became of Vladimir Kreschnev. Most would have agreed that, because he was never mentioned, that he had passed on because of the mysterious illness. A very small number of people held a different oppinion. They were afraid to speak it publically because those who did often disappeared the next day (as is typical in your corporate dictatorship). These few conspiracy theorists (mostly out of work novelists, low level government employees, or former online simulation gamers) believed that a) Kreschnev had been executed by Tatyanovich and the illness he had was a sham or b) Kreschnev was still alive somewhere, to fulfill some purpose or other.

Generian Intelligence Building, Generia City
30 minutes after corporate takeover of the government

Jonathan Raatko walked into the main room of the Generian intelligence building. Unusually, every monitor and map was dark.

"What's going on here?" He demanded of his staff.

"I don't understand it sir, we seem to be locked out of our own systems," replied a spectacled subordinate.

"What do you mean, locked out?"

"Well, ever since the official merger, our databases were sealed. We can't use any of the equipment!"

"Damn! Tatyanovich told me we would not be touched when he took control! Conniving bastard! Get him on the line. I intend to have a word with..."

Before he could finish his sentence the door to the room slid open and a squadron of gas masked special forces soldiers swarmed in holding the intelligence personnel at gunpoint. A soldier approached Raatko.

"Alright, come with me, this area is under Govcorp's official jurisdiction now."

Two soldiers grabbed Raatko and dragged him from the room.

"What is the meaning of this!? I am offiecial Imperial head of the Intelligence department! Who the Hell is Govcorp!?"

While Raatko was foced down the hall, he saw the same procedure being done to others throughout the building. The soldiers bludgeoned those who resisted and brandished their automatic rifles. Through an office window, Raatko caught a glimpse of Josef Tatyanovich smirking at him.

"We had a deal you son of a bitch! We had a deal!!"

One of the soldiers clubbed Raatko over the head, and before everything went dark, he could have sworn he caught a glimpse of Vladimir Kreschnev's wife standing next to Tatyanovich also smirking.

--00--

In the belly of the Intelligence building Andrew Zabav ran. He had suspected this from the first rumors of a government takeover. The intelligence service was too powerful to leave in place. He had warned several others to go into hiding. Some of them had taken his advice and fled to discreet sections of town. The rest were upstairs being taken away. Zabav shook his head in frustration. He quickly shook off the thought. He had to run now. If they found him, they wouldn't bother carting him off to headquarters. A field agent would be shot on sight. They were too dangerous to the new corporate system. He cam to a maintanence ladder andm rocketed upwards. He forced the grate open, and entered the city sewers. The Intelligence facility ran very deep below the city, and the sewers were often converted into testing facilities for secret weaponry. Zabav ran to a ladder and climbed upward, once more, forcing open a manhole cover and entering the street. It was dead still. Not a soul to be found, the whole area cordoned off by the Syracorp personal police force. This would be slightly more difficult than Zabav expected.

Prime Minister's Briefing

Dan McQuaide, in his eight years as prime minister, had never seen anything like it.

"Publicly traded?"

"Yes, sir."

"Like Google?"

"Well, they're listed on a different market, but, yes, sir."

"Keep an eye on it."

"What do you mean, publicly traded?" Matthew Terrus stared at the document in front of him.

"Well, Mr. President, it seems the government can now be bought and sold....sort of like google." The intelligence officer in front of him seemed nearly at the point of laughing.

"No, not at all like google, you idiot, their in a diffirent market. Tell me, can we buy shares?"

"Well, yes, Mr. President, but why..."

"Are you kidding? Why? If we own one share, we technically are a stockholder, and thereby a participant in their government. Get us some shares, now!"

"What about an official statement?"

"Tell them that we wish to keep the embassy we established in them after the blockade operating, and that we wish their nation the best in their phase of transition."

Official Statement; President George

Recently, a close ally of ours disbanded the government to create a publicly traded company. We do not know if the new man in charge, Tatyanovich, supports us or not. I believe that this has gone far enough. The old emperor has disappeared, the one with whom we establish our alliance with. Unless Grenval is formally approached with a new offer, consider all ties cut and all alliances broken. This is not a declaration of war. Merely, this statement is intended to find the answers.

Cabinet Meeting; Greval City, Grenval

The President stood up suddenly, throwing back his tall, dark-wooded chair. He spoke with fire in his eyes, but obviously saddened at the probable losing of an ally. "How many spies do we have in Generic Empire?"
The Minister of Defense laughed, oblivious to the tension in the room, "Why no sir, they are are ally."
"First, Mr. Galhaleen, ther are no longer our ally, and second, I do not think you understand the gravity of this problem," the President forced the words out of his mouth slowly, as if to control his temper. He sat down suddenly,as if weary. The cabinet looked around. The President was known for his temper, but no one had ever seen him tired, this looked dangerous. The President spoke softly, "Send in some three spies, find out the truth. Now leave me." The Cabinet shuffled out of the room, murmuring amongst themselves.

Unknown Location, Most Likely Generia City

The Emperor stared at the dark stone walls of the cell. He had been slipping in and out of consciousness for days, only recently finding himself able to stand again after the brutal beating he had taken from the guards. He did not know how long he had been in this place, or what, or where that place was, but he could judge from feeding schedules that it was at least several weeks. The room, if you could call it that, was completely dark. No windows, no lights. The only time light from the outside penetrated was when the small window in the steel door slid open for food to be shoved through. Even this miniscule amount of light nearly blinded Kreschnev. He looked down at the scars that covered almost every surface of his body. The guards showed no mercy when carrying out their orders, even to an Emperor. He wondered why he still alive at all. It would have been easier for Tatyanovich to kill him. Yes, it was Tatyanovich who had betrayed him. He remembered that. That one morning weeks ago that soldiers bearing ensigns he had never seen before kicked down his door and held him at gunpoint. He had been under house arrest for a month at that point, for whatever reason. Tatyanovich had told him that it was for protection, and like a fool Kreschnev had believed him. Stupidity had led him to this cell, escorted by masked soldiers. He would have to find out why. He at least had time enough to do that. Life in prison is a long time.

--00--

Zabav carefully stepped out into the deserted, early morning street and slipped behind a trash can. A single masked soldier walked by, and Zabav saw his chance. He leapt from his cover and snapped the man's neck. Stuffing the man into the trash can, Zabav stole his uniform and weapons. He approached the roadblock up ahead and casually strolled through, no one the wiser. He assumed that attacks like this were going on all over the city. There might have been others like him who escaped. A resistance movement would be in order.

--00--

Soldiers kicked down the door to the military council's meeting room and surrounded the three men there. General Josef Sveschkin calmly stood up and walked out, patting one of the soldiers on the shoulder.

"Keep up the good work boys, I'll see you back at Syracorp."

The other men were visibly shaken, but kept their mouths shut. A soldier approached the first man and told him to kneel. When the man refused the soldier blew out one of his kneecaps. When the general straightened himself the soldier shot him in the back of the head. They did the same to the second man. The apparent commander of the squad looked around the room.

"I thought they said there were going to be three of them. Where's the other guy? Spread out and find that man. We have a job to do."

They would not find Czwetiszka that day. He had gone underground the day before, and had already begun to fashion a resistance.

Inside the Reichstag, in the NAS capital of Belsin

"Reichschancellor?" queried the young SS officer, "A report has just been recieved from our men in the Generic Empire"

"What does it say, GrĂ¼ber?" came the reply.

"Apparently, the Emperor has been taken ill, and his place taken by an advisor by the name of Tatyanovich"

"How does this concern us?"

"Tatyanovich wields the power of the Emperor himself, and he has declared the government bankrupt, and made it into a publically traded company, which he has named 'Govcorp'"

"Generia has become a company? Does this mean that it is possible to purchase shares?"

"I believe so, sir"

"Then they'll be bought up in days" Reichschancellor Holst paused in thought, "They may be an enemy, but they do not deserve to go down like this...Mobilise three battalions of Marines and one of GSG9. Send in additional operatives, I want reports every hour. We must calculate the chances, then cut the head from the snake, Tatyanovich..."

The Cabinet took in the eerie light glowing around them. Few had even been inside this bunker, and few ever wanted to return. The President shuffled in, walking very heavily. His eyes were red and his compusure sloppy. He looked around the room several times, obviously not taking anything in. His exhaustion from the war raging in the south was apparent. That was why they were here, inside a bunker, and not in the comfortable metroplex of Grenval City. He spoke slowly, "What have the spies found out?"
The Minister of Intelligence addressed the President. "Quite a lot sir. Apparently the president is imprisioned, the location is unknown. It is indeed true that Tatyanovich controls the nation. Our spies are now talking to rebels, learning if a resistance is a good option."
The Minister of Foreign Affairs then began talking. "Appently they have not responded to our statements dealing with the alliance. I would suggest we cut all ties, as this new ruler seems to agree with nothing the former Emperor agreed with."
The President looked thoughtfully at his watch. The Cabinet wondered if he was even awake. President George blinked a few times, then said, "Have the spies ecourage a resistance. send in twenty special ops forces, disguised as civilians. Find out were to send the money, and donate half a million to the cause. We will fight for our ally, the old Emperor."

Vladek Tatyanovich looked out from the window in his office atop the Govcorp tower. He surveyed all that he had acquired in such a short time. The sky was so much closer now that his buildings had grown to such magnificent heights. An executive walked into the room.

"Tatyanovich, sir, everything seems to be falling into place. Other nations are soon to become proud shareholders in the Generic Empire."

"Excellent. I assume we still own the majority?"

"Of course, sir. 60% of shares are under Govcorps name, not to be distributed under any circumstances. The rest are up for grabs."

Tatyanovic chuckled.

"Then it will be a race to see who will hold sway in the fate of a people. When the buying is complete, we will hold a meeting for our stockholders."

Another well dressed man entered the room.

"Mr. Tatyanovich, sir, our intelligence seems to be running quite well. The cameras are in place, the propaganda loudspeakers and advertising radios are operational, and barcoding will commence shortly. Oh, and sir, with our new intelligence up and running, we have discovered several sleeper agents from various foreign powers. What would you have us do with them?"

"Let them stay," replied Tatyanovich, obviously amused. "Let them know the true and growing power of the corporation. But keep an eye on them."

"That should not be a problem, with our new systems. I will have operatives ready in case you see fit to remove them."

Tatyanovich dismissed the men and walked over to his desk, whereupon he picked up a telephone and dialed the number for General Josef Sveschkin.

"Josef, Excellent job downsizing the defense department. I trust you are comfortable in your new accomadations?"

"Of course, Mr. Tatyanovich. Penthouse overlooking Generia City. What more could I ask for?"

"Good. Now I have something I need you to do for me, as my newest head of defense. I want you to recall all of Generia's outstanding soldiers to the capital, except for those in the Barokoyan theater. I like how Tayanovich works, and I will allow him to finish his job there, thus attaining more land for the corporation, before we recall him for re-education."

"Of course, Immediately Mr. Tatyanovich."

In the months following the merger and the genesis of the new system, the Generian Intelligence service went through a dramatic revision. The old service was mostly liquidated in the first week of Tatyanovich's control, and a new system was implemented. This new system achieved the old dream of fusing local intelligence with global intelligence. This new service learned from the best: the American CIA, ex-KGB, and the Israeli Mossad, making it effective and deadly. The new Generian Intelligence agency became the governments foremost weapon, an extension of Tatyanovich himself.

The key to the new Corporation was singularity. Every department, agency, and human resource was an extension of the central, making the whole government machine operate with one will, Tatyanovich's in this case. The intelligence agency was especially useful at monitoring internal affairs, having the resources of both international and national services at its disposal. Because the military was fused with the agency by way of the central corporation, soldiers and special operations forces could operate all the more efficiently in their internal affairs work, with the guidence of intelligence forces. The agency monitored everything and everyone in the cities, by way of cameras, satellite, and field agent. Some areas of the lower cities were free from this monitoring, however, and this was where the resistance was born.

The resistance consisted of anyone who managed to escape the Govcorp forces during the first government purge, and who had been able to survive long enough to reach the other escapees. Sewers were the first headquarters, followed later by antique 20 story buildings, and street level structures. Even in these desert areas, patrols from the corporation occasionally wandered through, making the threat of discovery an ever present one. The resistance had yet to reveal themselves to the corporation. Govcorp did not bother with them anyway. It was little concern to them if a patrol disappeared once in a while, or if a few citizens went missing from their homes and jobs every now and then.

--00--

Andrei Fusik sat at an elevated cafe observing a man who had been marked as a foreign agent. He had been instructed to follow him, but not to expose himself as hostile or harm the man in any way. In this way, the corporation could control the information that the man fed to the outside world. Fusik got up from the table and discreetly walked outside, where he made a phone call to Dimitri Kobak, the head of the Intelligence Department of the corporation. After he made his report he returned to the cafe to contiinue with his observation.

"Send the men, except for the one, to those areas. Eleven per area. Where is the discovered one?"

The room was dark, except for a single bulb hanging from the ceiling. He heard footsteps thundering down the hall of the dillapidated appartment building and quickly finished his transmission. He had spent the morning gathering intelligence, but now they had found him. There was a crash and the door fell broken to the floor. Six burly soldiers bearing the Govcorp emblem rushed in and grabbed Zabav, dragging him down the hall and into the elevator. They administered a shot into Zabav's neck knocking him out instantly. The soldiers dragged him to a parked white van and sped off to Govcorp tower for interrogation.

The eerie glow of the sole lightbulb hanging from the ceiling bounced off the stone walls. The light was tinged green, giving the stone room, filled with shadows in the corners, a haunted look. The thick wooden door opened. The Minister's heel clicked on the stone floor, his expensive shoes out of place in a room hundreds of feet below the ground. He waited, the President looked up at the Minister. The President look horrible, lack of sleep and the loss of routine hygine for sixty hours made him appear as a beggar, not the President of Grenval. He was forced to remain here by the Cabinet, for fear of nuclear war, although not concerning the nation for which the Minister was here for. The Minister spoke, "A man was found today. Not one of ours, but he is believed to be a leader in the resistance. What are we going to do?"
The President resonded, "What can we do? If we say anything, they will learn of the spies. Send in seventeen more men. This time, fully armed. Tell them they are to attempt to infiltrate the compound where this other man was taken. Do not free him, but rather learn logistics, that sort of thing."

Former General Yogi Czwetiszka sat in the small apartment that had become the headquarters of the rebellion eyeing the trasmission that Zabav had sent before his capture. It had been well worth it. Apparently the corporation already had its mind on expansion. Czwetiszka grunted in a half chuckle.

"So the monster grows hungry. I wonder which lucky group it will set its eyes on for nourishment."

The transmission also listed several of the old government's special weapons projects that the corporation had picked up again. The most dangerous appeared to be a nanite based bio-weapon referred to as project "Igor." It was unsure whether the codevelopers would continue to assist the corporation, but either way it could be developed relatively quickly with the forces that govcorp had at its disposal. The resistance would need to act soon if it were to delay the corporations plans.

"We dont have the men to make a large attack," thought Czwetiszka, "if we strike, however, we may be able to garnish some international support. Friends of the Emperor are not scarce in the international community."

Captain Mikhail Gragne was escorting a large group of lower class prisoners through the streets of the Generia city slums. These people, men women and children, had been rounded up to be used for Corporate slave labor. This practice was common nowadays, because of the large requirement for hard labor in the expansion of the cities. The guards bludgeoned the stragglers with the butts of their rifles, yelling for them to hurry up. Out of nowhere an explosion of gunfire shattered the dead calm of the early morning and the heads of two soldiers exploded with the impact of the hot lead. Captain Gragne hit the ground and motioned for the others to open fire. As soon as the guns had opened up, the attackers were gone. Gragne carefully got to his feet. There was a sharp crack, and a sniper's bullet buried itself in the back of his head. Ten screaming guerilla fighters closed the distance to the convoy and slashed the throats of the other four soldiers. The rebels freed the prisoners and vanished with them into the sewers before another patrol could arrive to investigate the disturbance.

In the city of Blair, a place of only 102 people, the glossy Greval Intelligence Center stood out among the rundown buildings of the small town. The Minister of Intelligence had just arrived back from his second meeting with the President that day. Two plane trips were tiring, and he would not stand for any more bad news. The young man monitoring the computers looked up, "I have some new, sir. Just recieved an email from upstairs," he said.
The Minister, exhausted, replied, "I cannot take it."
"Oh no sir, you will love this news. We have located the headquarters of the resistance. A small apartment building. Two of our spies are trying to convince the guards there to let them in. So far the guards have acted like they no nothing of a resistance and that they are just waiting for a friend to pick them up."
"So it we are postivily sure these guys are actually guards?"
"Yes, sir. There is no doubt, our spies overheard them talking about the man who had been taken."
Finally thought the Minister. Noticiably relived he said, "Good work, send in another ten forces, so we will total fifty. I'll get back onto the plane. The President insists on hearing these things personally, but truth be told, I think he just wants visitors about anything other than the invasion in Rufushian."

Dimitri Kobak was watching the satellite feeds in the large, main room of the Generian Intelligence facility. For several days he had been watching the steady build up of foreign intelligence personnel in the capital. He knew that Tatyanovich had told him to leave them be, but considering the rate of increase, he was unsure if that order should still stand. There were 20 positively identified agents and 12 more suspected agents. There were most likely more than that, but they had yet to be located, probably down in the slum areas of the cities. K,obak picked up his telephone and dialed Tatyanovich.

"Sir, I need to know if your order to not engage the hostile agents still stands. I am sure you are aware of the developing situation and the increasing number of foreign personnel. More are being discovered every hour, and I am requesting permission to act."

There was a brief silence on the line.

"Yes, go ahead and bring in the ones you are sure about. Don't kill them unless they resist, but bring adequate personnel. I don't want you to make a scene."

"Yes, sir."

Kobak gave his orders, and his men in the field prepared to act. Vans with corporate soldiers were dispatched to each known member's location and the teams lay low until the order was given by the agent in charge of surveillance. When the time was right, the men acted on the 20 known foreign operatives.

Agent Faust finished his coffee and got up. He folded the newspaper he had been reading, tucked it under one arm, and began walking down the backstreets. Eventually, the sounds of the city faded, and all that could be heard was Faust's own footsteps.
He paused in mid stride, one foot three inches from the ground.
Silence.
Faust continued walking and came to an alleyway. The planned route took him through this alley, and his stride did not falter. A drunk lay under a blanket, sleeping.
Thirty seconds later, another man entered the alley. He was a Generian, wearing a dark blue suit and carrying a briefcase. He was just another businessman.
The man walked quietly past the sleeping form of the drunk, his eyes fixed on the back of his target in the distance.
There was a shuffle behind him, and then hand grasped his mouth from behind. A serrated knife raked across his throat, and Andrei Fusik sank to the ground with blood in his lungs.
His killer wiped the blood from the knife and thrust it back into it's scabbard, before rifling through the pockets of Andrei's new suit, taking a wallet, then set off after Faust.
At the far end of the alleyway, a taxi waited. The man opened the door and climbed in.

"Were you seen?" asked Faust.

"No." replied Agent Uldt, "He is dead and will be discovered by tomorrow. They will blame local criminals"

"Reichschancellor, there is some bad news from Generia"

"What" replied Holst.

"Six out of our ten agents in the upper levels of the Generian capital have been captured by security forces. The remaining four are lying low in the lower levels"

"Damn. There goes most of our intel"

"Why are we meeting with out the President?" the Minister of Foreign Affairs asked.
"Because he is unable to leave the bunker and has put me in charge of this situation. And because the plane ride to the bunker in three hours and the ride here is only 35 minutes," retorted the Minister of Intelligence. He began to speak again, "Now, first, you," he pointed at Dan Galhaleen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, "must contact The New Aryan State. It is believed they have operatives in Generic Empire. Also, twenty of our spies have disappeared and are presummed dead, although no one knows for sure. The irony is that the one man who thought he was suspected is fine. We must send in replacements, thrity, to increase our overall number. We must act now!"
The Minister of Defense cleared his throat to draw attention to himself. He spoke, "Will we need any true troops, as in paratroopers or infantry. Because unfotunately, if you say yes, I will tell you now, everyone is fighting of the war down south."
The Minister of Intelligence nodded, "I understand, we can do without for now, but we are running out of spies and special operatives to send. Are there any civilians who know the business?"
The Minister of the People, a man whose sole job was to learn of the people's will and keep democracy in Grenval replied, "I know a person or two."
"Very well, but as soon as we figure out the location of our captured spies, we must send in a reconnisance force. Can we Anthony?" he asked the Minister of Defense, Anthony Bafringh.
"If the peace process is kept up, perhaps, in two days."
The men and women of the cabinet left for thier offices. The doors shut behind the last one, leaving the room dark and empty.

((OOC: Thank you, NAS. Someone is finally doing some good spy v. spy RPing. Keep up the good work.))

In a small cafe overlooking Generia city a man sat pretending to read a newspaper while discreetly scribbling on a small yellow pad. Another man was watching the first while sipping a cup of coffee. In the street a van pulled up and 12 Govcorp soldiers mounted an elevator. The soldiers got out and walked to the door of the cafe. The Generian agent who had been observing the foreigner picked up a small radio and gave the team their orders. The 12 men rushed into the room and cornered the Grenval operative. The man stood up dropping the pad and spilling coffee. The rest of the cafe's patrons watched in shock.

"You are under arrest by order of Vladek Tatyanovich. Come quietly and do not try to use force. You are outnumbered and outgunned."

The man looked casually around at the 13 men with guns before turning his back and strolling confidently towards the balcony.

"I have warned you once. Stop before we are forced to open fire!"

The man continued his stroll and put his hands on the railing, staring down from the dizzying height to the rooftops below.

"Alright men, he heard us. Open Fire!"

Before the soldiers could squeeze off a single shot, the man had leapt over the guardrail and was plummeting 50 stories to the street.

The soldiers stood puzzled while the cafe patrons ran in horror from the restaurant. The Generian special agent picked up the yellow pad, tucked it into his coat, and walked to the elevator, smiling.

--00--

Anthony Sadaak peered through the scope of his rifle at the man in the street below. A platoon of Govcorp soldiers approached the same man. The man reached inside his coat, and Sadaak pulled the trigger. The man fell in a heap. The soldiers rooted through his pockets, and found the information they were looking for.

Agent Schmidt hid inside the 'safe' house.
Safe? Hah. It wasn't protecting him from the twelve Corporation troopers that were hunting him.
Crouched by a doorway, Schmidt listened for the enemy. They made enough noise to wake the dead in their boots.
The sound came closer, and Schmidt realised a soldier was making his way towards his door.
Schmidt held his breath.
A foot stepped through the doorway, followed by the muzzle of an assault rifle.
If it had been pointing towards him, Schmidt would be dead. Simple as that. But it wasn't pointing towards him.
The enemy soldier snuck into the room, and Schmidt sprang.
A steel-capped shoe caught the man's inside leg and he fell, whilst a thumb stabbed down on his elbow, forcing him to release his grip on his weapon.
Schmidt pulled the man towards him and put one hand on his head, the other on his shoulder. A quick wrench, and the man's neck emitted a sickening crack.
Schmidt grabbed the fallen weapon and ran forwards.
A burst of fire, another enemy went down. There were voices shouting in Generian.
A few moments of silence, then they were broken by a tap...tap...tap
The grenade came to rest at Schmidt's feet. It had been too much to hope that he could have got out alive...

"And now we are one less," the Minister walked out of the room.

--

He walked through the capital city of Generic Empire. He was not government trained, but he was a criminal mastermind. A civilian who made his living spying for anyone who paid the most. And right now was his toughest job ever. He posed as a Generian, which meant a lot of makeup in the morning. He managed to join the army, and his commander could tell he was good. Told him to ask for a job with Generic Empire Intelligence. Stupid man. So the man applied, and his commander backed him up. In only two months inside the country he had become a low ranking intelligence personnel. But that did not matter. He was out to kill his boss. Then he would take the promotion that was offered to him. Then he would become a low ranking officer in the intelligence personnel. Right now he knew nothing, but as an officer, he would truely be an asset to Grenval. He reached the skyscraper. Massive, probably over two hundred stories, and not even the largest on this block, much less the city. He walked through the revolving door. A security officer watched him walk in and asked for ID. The card read 'Marshall Reed' and told that the man worked in the Public Relations Office on the third floor. Of course the ID was fake, but not forged. The Generic Empire issued it to him so that if he was ever found out, he could appear innocent. 'Mr. Reed' walked to the elevator and got on. He punched in the third floor, although he was headed nowhere near there. But he covered all his bases, the guard would think there was some late night emergency in Public Relations. When 'Mr. Reed' arrived on the third floor, he immediately punched in the number 72 and rode up.
He reached his floor and went to his office and logged onto the computer. He did a little work, giving him an alibi. Then he walked over to his boss's office. He knew his boss would be there, he had telephoned him to tell him that he had found out something important, something that could not wait. His boss had been in bed with his mistress, but if he was there, he too would get credit, as would 'Mr. Reed'. He waited, smoking a cigarette.
At half past two his boss, a once muscled man, but now fattening, arrived. His Marine style haircut, yet fat face made him appear clownish. 'Mr. Reed' looked up, and shoot him. He logged off his computer. Then he went down the elevator to street level. He had a suit in his briefcase, which he gave to a beggar along with several hundred dollars. The beggar dressed in it and found a fake ID, also for the third floor, inside a pocket on his pants.
"Go inside, walk into office number 7 on the 72 floor. Then come back out. Tell no one and you will find several hundred dollars more beneath that trash can."
The beggar did as he was told. 'Mr. Reed' made sure he told nothing to the guard and the beggar recieved his money. Then he made sure the beggar would never tell anyone again. He called his supervisor. Told him to get down here quick, his boss was dead and he had caught and shot the killer. He told his story. How he was putting in overtime to earn more money. The guard could not help because 'Mr. Reed' was expected to have a fake ID. Not even the cameras could help. They saw the beggar go into the Intelligence Department, but no cameras could go inside the department walls, for national security reasons obviously. The supervisor had no choice but to believe 'Mr. Reed'. And he promoted him right there on the spot.

Ivan Cac was also watching a man through a rifle scope that afternoon. Again, the man was cornered in the street by 12 Generian soldiers. This time, however, the Generian was not there to kill the foreigner. The crosshairs landed on the head of the squad's commander. Cac pulled the trigger, and the bullet pierced his helmet and came out the man's opposite ear. Cac's rifle found other targets and pulled the trigger. One after antother the soldiers fell, trying to find where the fire was coming from. The foreigner drew a small machine pistol and slew the last 2 soliers before running off down an alley. Cac disassemble the rifle and packed it back into his briefcase. He then made his way to the elevator.

Cac had his reason's for defecting. The evening before, he had seen something he did not want to see. A careless employee had left a tape on the table in the interrogation room. Cac had pushed it into the vcr and was, for the first time in his life, shocked at what he saw. The soldiers had dragged a woman, his sister, from the slums into the Generian intelligence special branch. After a thorough questioning the soldiers had beaten and raped the woman before shooting her in the back of the head. Cac had no choice in the matter. Defecting was his only option in getting the bastards responsible.

As he stepped into the elevator, Cac felt a smile crossing his lips. The corporation had no idea that they had trained the most deadly terrorist they would face.

Tatyanovich stood in his office on the 258th story of the Govcorp tower. The war had just escalated. It would take a good cleaner to cover up the events of the day. Now they at least had a few agents to interrogate. The situation in the slums was worsening, also. More corporate soldiers were arriving to find the heads of the resistance. The most important goal was to prevent the war from spilling into the aristocratic areas. Keep the shareholders happy. That was the most important part.

Tatyanovich looked at his watch. He had a meeting with the board of directors. They would not be pleased. He walked down the hall to two towering ornamental doors and entered the enormous room. It was dark, save for a few lights and the glow of cigars. The man at the far end of the table addressed Tatyanovich from the gloom.

"Mr. Tatyanovich, it seems you have quite a problem on your hands."

"Nothing I can't handle. Just some unhappy peasants, Mr. Labko."

"I should hope so, Vladek. We cannot have the shareholders unnerved. My portfolio is growing quite fat, and I want it to stay that way. Get this rebellion under control and everyone stays happy. If you fail to control it we will all be very upset, especially you Tatyanovich. Now get out of here. You have business to attend to."

The man puffed on his unusually large cigar and a wreath of smoke curled around the his shadowed face.

"Code 987XYZ, this is Alex." 'Mr. Reed' used his real name, Alex.
"Yes."
"I am in."

--

He cleared out the office that night, and was working the next morning. He asked if he could hire the man to take his former post. He was told yes, after an extensive background check. It took several days to create a record for the Grenval spy he was about to hire. He choose one who had been hiding in the slums, away from the guards in the city center. His assisstant was named Red Bithard. He was also working with the resistance circle. Red passed his background check, but not perfectly. Alex intended it so. A few fines, and a hot temper for his new man. Tempers are not the best in the intelligence work, and Red was actually prone to stay calm in any situation. But he was and intimidating man, and he could play dirty. They worked together, ate lunch once or twice, but other than that tried to remain distant. Fool the government.

Alex found out where they kept the catives. That was his first move. But now, he was unsure. He was able to do his work too well. It was so easy. Then one day, he was walking the slums when a black suburban pulled up. The windows were blacked out. Alex knew it was not someone from Intelligence to give him a message, they would have driven a normal car so as not to call attention to themselves. These men were hired killers. Alex ran into the ally. He an open back door and entered the house. He heard the muzzle of an assualt weapon, and a sickening thud. A body hitting the ground? He thought of getting out of there, but then he would be trapped in the street. He stealthily moved towards the body. There was a man in the doorway, and a gernade at his feet.

Agent Vladimir Siev was riding in the back of a black SUV. He read the foreigner's notes. The enemy had gathered extensive intelligence. More than they had suspected. The unmarked vehicle stopped in front of Siev's next objective. He was to investigate a murder from the night before. A prominant Intelligence director had been slain brutally in his office. A Generian had been given the blame, but had fervently denied it, claiming to be a beggar. The man had been executed too early in the interrogation, sparking outrage from the upper echelon of the Intelligence force. A further investigation had been orchestrated and Siev had been put in charge.

Siev entered the office, which had been closed since the murder. After asking around for a few minutes, Siev learned that a promising new officer had been put in charge. Siev found this rather suspicious, but he could not act on his suspicians alone. As a senior agent with the support of the high level intelligence members, getting an audience with this Mr. Reed was not difficult. When he left the meeting, Siev had no doubt in his mind that this man was a mole. Now he had to find out how to deal with it. Convincing the agency to terminate one of their own with no hard evidence would be impossible. Siev would have to take matters into his own hands. He would move quickly. Today, if possible, to prevent further damage to the agency.

OOC: Having completed the evacuation of the rebels, the half-company of GSG9 donned civilian clothes. They were split into platoons, each with a different target. Platoon A, with the Liutenant, dressed as labourers and would attack the Police station nearest the slums. They would pose as a worker's union attempting to lodge a complaint to gain access. Platoon B were dressed as electrical workers. They would seperate to sabotage streetlamps during the day, so they would not turn on at night. Platoon C were dressed as construction workers, and would place C4 charges on a near-completed skyscraper. The blasts and fall trajectory would be calculated so that the tower fell towards more buildings. This would spread panic, and create a dust cloud likely to linger for a few days. During that time the entire half-company, equipped with gas masks, would launch attacks on more key buildings.
-------------------------
Liutenant Berger and his men strolled through the dirty streets. Each of them had his .45 pistol hidden inside his jacket. At last they came to the police station. The building was far from the modernized centre of the city, and was in a slight state of disrepair. Paint hung from the walls in places, and one of the ground floor windows was boarded up, presumably due to vandals breaking it.
The men walked up the steps of the precinct. They seemed to be in a jovial enough mood to the casual eye. This was due to orders to keep in character until shots were fired.
Berger stood at the receptionists desk as his men (supposedly out of curiosity) had a look around the building.
"Good morning" he said in German. The woman at the desk looked confused, obviously not understanding him.
"We are here to kill you all" hazarded Berger. Several of the troopers sniggered to themselves at the stupidity of the Generians. The receptionist swivelled on her chair to speak to one of the other policemen.
"Squad!" yelled Berger, "Open fire!" Thirty-three high caliber pistols slid from the recesses of the disguises. Berger aimed his own at the man the receptionist had begun to talk to. He fired, the policeman's head jerked backwards, and he crumpled to the floor.
The police were caught entirely by surprise, and barely any managed to even draw their weapons. Men ran forwards to disarm the receptionist, for they were reluctant to shoot a woman.
After using belts from the bodies to tie her up, the troopers began the trek further into the building.
-------------------------
Sergeant Lintz assembled his platoon around the corner from their target, which now had C4 charges around it's base.
"Keep down!" he bellowed, drawing a small black plastic box from a pocket. He pressed a small red button on one side, and the air was filled with a deafening noise as the explosives detonated.
The office block lurched dangerously, swung back slightly, then toppled with a sound like thunder. It landed on the side of a second skyscraper, ripping chunks from it's wall.
Dust billowed into the air, and Platoon C retreated to the now-captured police station.
Two men had been hit by enemy fire during the attack, but the small caliber weapons used by the police did no permanent damage.
Crates had been found in the cellars of the police station containing automatic rifles. As many as possible were dragged back into the slums where the troops could rest...

Martin Reggar, leader of the spies operating in Generia, sat at his desk, looking wearily at the exposed abestos hanging on the ceiling. In the heart of the slums, this was perhaps one of the better buildings. Another spy came in.
"Sir, Alex is gone. A gernade blew up, but that's not what killed him. What killed him was the guards that stormed the building from the front and the back. Red saw the whole thing. Between Alex and Red, there are six less enemies around. Red got away because he was on a rooftop. Oh, and the gernade was not meant for Alex. Appearently there is another spy ring, and they also support the resistance."
Another spy walked in, covered with dust. He said, "Sir, there is another spy ring!"
Reggar replied, "I know. But the devil happened to you?"
"Well, sir, they blew up a skyscraper with C4. And it fell onto at least one other building."
Reggar asked, "Do we have contact with this new organization?"
"Not yet, but we are working on uncovering them."

--

Red followed the SUV from atop his building as it rounded the corner. As this was the slums, he was only two stories up. He took the chance. He jumped. Red landed hard, but he was not hurt. He stood there for a minute in shock. Then he pulled out his weapon. An assualt rifle with folding stock should do the trick, he thought to himself. He shot out the back tires of the SUV. Just then the other SUV that had been originally chasing Alex pulled out of the ally. Oh shit! The windows rolled down and out came two machine guns. He dived into a window. It shattered against his force, shreading his clothes and tearing his flesh. Just then, two more Grenval men appeared.
"Where the hell did you come from?"
One of the spies told him, "Reggar heard Alex was gone and that you where somewhere in the area. He heard it five minutes after the gunfight, and told everyone in the area to head here."
They both pulled out their own assualt rifles and smiled. "We're ready for 'em"
Just then the door fell in.

Tatyanovich recieved yet another report. His eyes burned with rage.
"Kill every last one of them! Now!!!"

The corporation sprung into action. This war was no longer invisible. Soldiers appeared in the streets by the thousands. A state of martial law was declared and anyone in the street was either forced back inside or shot. The police station that had just been attacked was surrounded by armored vehicles and shock troops wearing gas masks and body armor poured out of armored personnel carriers. The soldiers stormed the front entrance and opened fire on the terrorists. They operated with surgical precision, securing every inch of the building and slaughtering their enemies with ruthless efficiency.

When the attacks began, the intelligence agency sprang out of its daze into a state of energy and awareness. The agents in the field armed themselves with heavier weaponry themselves and prepared to take action against their stealthy opponents. Kobak gave the order to terminate all known sleeper agents in the capital city. Within minutes his order was fulfilled, and the rest of the known operatives were slain by the all pervasive corporate police. In the slums, the scene was massacre. Corporate soldiers unloaded automatic weapons into crowds. The rebel guerillas retalliated, but the sheer numbers of the corporation overpowered them.

Tatyanovich's hopes to keep his intelligence war quiet had come crashing down around him. Either way, he would end this now at any cost.

--00--

Siev heard about his mole's fate by way of his personal informant. Right now he had more important matters to attend to. The streets were becoming a warzone between the intelligence forces. Siev jumped into a car parked in the parking garage he was standing in, hotwired the engine, and sped off to do what he could to finish the war.

Tatyanovich watched the skyscraper fall, knocking over a smaller, but still enormous tower. He clenched his fists in rage, and picked up the phone to send more troops. At this moment, the executive from the board of directors who had personally addressed him during the meeting entered the office. He sat down in Tatyanovich's chair, and aimed a pistol at his head.

"Handle this, now, or I will kill you."

A bead of sweat dripped down Tatyanovich's forehead, and he went about his phone calls.

--00--

Captain Ivan Sadaak and his team of soldiers stood on one side of a door. On the opposite side were three foreign intelligence officers. Ivan gave the signal and the door was broken in. Fire erupted and the soldiers who entered first were cut down. The rest of the team fanned out and opened up with their assault rifles. A bullet buried itself in one agent's throat. The other two ran through a back door into the street.
Grenval
15-07-2004, 04:19
The other two spies, Mark Haggerty and Jason Gugn ran out the back door and towards the sirens. Red was dead. They arrived in a warzone. Haggerty was shot eighteen times, but he provided a sheild as Gugn took cover. He had found the new base, now he had to get report to Reggar. Then they would join the war.

There were now fifty-seven operatives inside Generia borders. Reggar ordered every last one to arm themselves. Fifty stole cars parked in the street and sped towards the the police station. The other eight were ordered to be copycats. They loaded themselves with C4 and raced off to the tallest building in the Generic Empire. They assumed that was were the government would be located.

The other fifty arrived on at the police station. Seven dropped dead seconds after opening the car doors. Ten had snipers, and were heading for the rooftops. The others, one with a howitzer mounted on the back of a pickup, opened fire on every troop on the block.
Generic empire

General Leon Iskra peered over the overturned car he was taking shelter behind. The enemy agents had fortified the police station with everything they had. His men were being cut down in droves. Soldiers fell as the technicals opened fire. Howitzer shells blasted craters in the concrete and in the Corporate soldiers. A team with a rocket propelled grenade took aim and fired before being cut down. The howitzer-packing pickup exploded and the men inside flew through the air.

"Alright, blow it up," yelled Iskra over the gunfire.

"What, sir?"

"You heard me! Blow the damn thing sky high! Call in a goddamn airstrike!"

The call was made and seven attack helicopters made their way towards the embattled police station. The choppers leveled off and aimed their ordinance at the building. Soldiers scrambled to get out of the way. The payload streaked towards the police station and it exploded in a tower of flame and dust. The missiles that hit the bottom of the building destabilized it and with a sickening groan it fell in upon itself. The Corporate soldiers cheered and charged to pick through the rubble for survivers to butcher.

--00--

Outside of the Govcorp tower the largest section of the armed forces had mobilized. Every street was blocked off, and every rooftop had snipers positioned on top of it. Tanks had their guns trained on the silent streets. Gunships roamed the skies at low level to provide support. The lower levels of the tower had been fortified to prevent anyone from entering.

On the buildings 258th floor Tatyanovich stared in terror out of the enormous glass window. The board executive sat calmly in the chair, pistol at the ready. Armed guards were packed into the room, equipped with assault rifles and stinger missile launchers.

--00--

On the police radio in his car, Siev heard the reports from the destroyed police station. He redirected his car towards the govcorp tower. Pulling out onto the Generia City freeway he was hammered by a convoy of civilian vehicles, speeding towards the tower. His vehicle flipped several times until it landed on the side of the road. Siev crawled, bleeding, from the wrecked SUV. He furiously tried the police radio in the destroyed vehicle, but it did not respond. He reached into his pocket and pulled out an apparently very durable cell phone. Dialing the intelligence department, he warned Kobak of a convoy of vehicles heading for the tower. Siev dropped the phone and fell over, dead.

The agents saw guards everywhere. Quickly, they turned and sped off, but it seemed the guards knew what was in their car.

Reggar ran through the building, heading for the ally. He had to get away from the helicoptors hunting him from the air. He had counted as his men were blown apart. He knew at least thirty-seven were dead and the howitzer was destroyed. He had to get back to his own headquarters. He had to contact the Minister of Intelligence. They needed real troops, spies could only do so much. He looked around wildly. He saw two men supporting a woman with blood coming out of her side. He pulled out his handgun and aimmed. The woman looked up. Reggar saw her, Theresa. He jerked his hand up. Click. The shot grazed the arm of Jerry Vallar. He winced and then smiled through clenched teeth at Reggar.
They arrived safely at Headquarters. Reggar called in. They had satellite images. They had all nine Blackbird helicopters, the entire Blackbird fleet in Grenval, loaded with the Elite Grenval Guard. The ninety-nine men be dropped of in the suburbs and would arrive in the capital at dawn.

Having claimed an entire nation in the name of Generia and proclaimed himself King, he was the best man for the job, the only man for the job. "So, they want to escalate this conflict. Before now this war was invisible, maybe it is time we made this public. If they send in soldiers under their flag, then we will declare war on Grenval. I am correct in assuming that they are at war with another nation already?"

"Yes, sir. The Hawaiian Islands."

"Good. Then they have made a dreadful error."

Imperial Communique to Grenvali President

This is a warning. If you bring combat ready forces into our borders, including special operations soldiers, then we will officially declare war upon your nation. This private intelligence war will then be escalated to a public and international scale.

"Sir, it's Reggar," says an employee as he hands the phone to the Minister of Intelligence.
"Hello."
A raspy vioce comes on, filled with exhaustion and hateful emotion. "There are eleven of us left, and eight others who were sent to blow up skyscrapers who have yet to return. Also, there is an important government official in the area, but I do not know who."
The Minister told Reggar the news. "There will be no forces. All helicopters have been told to return to Rufushian. We will not make a public war when the Hawiaan Islands confrontation has the ability to quickly explode. You have at least eleven agents. Find out who this government official is and what he is doing in the slums."
"Damnit! How am I supposed to do that with eleven agents, three who cannot even walk?"
"You have your orders," the Minister's vioce was deadly cold.

--

Reggar summed up what was left of his forces. Seven able agents, one, Hawkins, was in a sling, and three who might die before morning. Pitiful. He could only hope the others could accomplish their objective. Okay he thought.
"Mannings, Bryce, find out about the others. Hawkins guard the headquarters. The rest of us are going to split up an learn about this newly arrived official." Hopefully Hawkins would be able to shoot.

--

Reggar scanned the streets. He had gone three blocks and only seen seven guards. Perhaps they were returning to the downtown sector. Every guard he saw, he overflowed with anger. He was approaching one now. He drew out what appeared to be an ordinary pen from his pocket. He scanned the streets. Several ragged children played with a ball at the corner. A homeless man, with a cardboard sign, leaned against a dilapitated apartment building. He approached the guard, who was watching the children play. He clicked his pen. With a shwosh out came a stainless steel blade. As he turned at the corner, he nodded at the guard. The guard opened his mouth, forming the letter h. Reggar streaked the blade across his neck. The guard's Adam's apple sliced in half. A gurggle escaped his throat as dark red blood spilled down his uniform. Reggar caught the man and pushed him into a doorway. He stepped back into the light. The street was the same. The homoless man was lighting a cigarette, the children had never even looked up from their game. Reggar began to walk. At the next corner, he spotted another guard.

--

Jones, a tall man with a scraggely beard that fit in perfectly with the slum setting, headed north. Turning the corner, he spotted a black sedan with completely black out windows. Obviously expensive, Jones began to follow the sedan. This had to be his target, who else could afford such a car in this neighborhood. The car was coming from behind him. He stepped into a house. The television was on the Home Shopping Network. He drew out his silenced pistol and broke a window from the inside. He listened for anyone coming to check out the disturbance. A woman appeared from the room with the TV. She had on too much makeup and her hair was filled with curling irons. She was obviously a prostitute. Jones motioned for her to shut-up but she opened her mouth in a long scream. Jones fired, the silencer creating the noise of clapping your hands underwater. Her long scream turned into a short yelp and the bullet ripped through her open mouth. Jones listened for any sounds upstairs, but he now seemed to be alone. He considered himself a religious man, perhaps in an effort to rationalize the daily murders he committed for his job. He said a 'Hail Mary' under his breath as the woman dropped to the floor. Looking out the broken window, he saw the car approaching. Another little pop of his gun and the front tire blew out. He ran up the stairs to watch from there as armed guards jumped from the car.

General Yogi Czwetiszka sat at a worn wooden desk in an apartment basement. The lumination from the single electric lightbulb had long since vanished when the corporation had cut power to the slums. Now the lighting came from wax candles placed around the room. Czwetiszka was sweating from the lack of circulation in the old cellar. Above he could hear the muffled sounds of far off explosions. 'Thank God they Havn't found us,' he thought to himself. Most of his men had either been killed or whisked away by NAS helicopters. They couldn't do him any good in another country. He had remained against their wishes, along with a number of his soldiers. Now they were cut off from their allies. The Corporation had surrounded them and sooner or later they would be found out. Rumor had it that they had even brought in General Josef Tayanovich from Barokoy to deal with the rebellion. Tayanovich was an old classmate of Czwetiszka's at the Generian military institute. He was good at what he did, having recently taken Barokoy for the Empire, not realising that the E,pire was no more. No, it was all the Corporation now.

Czwetiszka looked around in the dim light at the men who had stood loyally by him in their rebellion from the beginning. They came from all walks of life, soldiers, clerks, construction workers, stock brokers, and government agents. Even now, in this darkest hour, they looked ready to give their lives for the an Emperor whom no one was sure of was still alive. The firing got louder. The Corporation was getting closer. Czwetiszka reached into the old desk and pulled out a mostly full bottle of Vodka, something he had saved from hsi old desk at the Defense ministry.

"Well, boys, looks like the end is getting close. Might as well go out in style." He passed the bottle around the room and each man took a swig. When it came back to him he drained what was left and stood up.

"Im sure you all know that we probably will not see tomorrow. The Corporation that we set out to bring down has prevailed. We have lost far too many to this hopeless cause, and I am sorry for ever bringing you into this mess."

The men protested, declaring their loyalty to the lost cause.

"No, no, I was wrong to start this thing. Right now you could be up in those highrises instead of here in this hot, damp, f*****g basement."

Again the men softly protested.

"Well, I dont know about you, but I am getting damn tired of said basement, and I would kill to get a tast of that afternoon breeze. So what do you say we go out into the street and try to kill a few Corpos before they find us."

The men smiled and picked up their various armaments making their way to the staircase.

--00--

CEO Vladek Tatyanovich slumped down into a chair staring straight into the board director's eyes. Suddenly, something occured to him.

"Napalm," he said under his breath inaudibly.

"What?" enquired the executive with the pistol.

"Napalm," he said louder, laughing almost hysterically. "We have Napalm!"

He jumped up out of his seat, practically dancing.

"What the hell are you on about, Tatyanovich. Have you gone completely mad!" the director said, visibly frightened.

"I said napalm. Use it. We can burn the bastards out! We'll torch the slums!"

"You mean burn down a whole section of our city?! Thats insane!"

"What would you suggest, oh esteemed director," Tatyanovich's voice dripping sarcasm. He yelled for his personal aid. "Call Tayanovich, tell him to commence bombing ASAP."

--00--

In the back of a black sedan, a man handed Tayanovich a phone.

"CEO. Says its urgent," said a gruff agent.

Tayanovich took the phone.

"General, I want you to burn it down," the man on the line said.

"Excuse me?" answered Tayanovich.

"You heard me, firebomb the slums into the ground. Just do it. Now."

The line went dead. Tayanovich had destroyed entire cities before, but this somehow seemed different to him. These were his people. These were Generians. Some of them were his friends and comrades in arms. Before he had the tiem to finish his thought, the front tires of the SUV went out and the vehicle went out of control.

--00--

Tayanovich crawled from the crushed vehicle, leaving the 3 dead or unconscious agents. Tayanovich looked up to see a man with a scraggly beard aiming a gun at his head. Thinking with all the speed and accuracy of an experienced soldier Tayanovich pushed himself forward into the mans legs. The man's shot went wide, burying itself in Tayanovich's leg. The General knocked the gun fromt he man's hand and wrestled him onto the pavement. He drew a pen from his pocket and stabbed it deep into the attacker's throat. Tayanovich stood up and wiped the blood from his face. A second black sedan pulled up next to him and similar looking agents asked if he needed a ride.

"Take me to the Corporate field command center," he said.

Dear Sirs:

How you choose to run your country/company is of no concern to us unless it directly impacts us and we are concerned that it might. As you recall, we had entered into a trade and development agreement on our Cellulite nanite technology. As I'm sure you are aware, we currently have as guests in our country some of your top scientists and weapons development specialists and you have some of ours. We need assurances that our agreement is going to be honored by your government, no matter what form the government ultimately takes, and that our scientists are safe. Until such time as these assurances have been received, and we have been given access to free and unfettered communications with our team in your country, we feel, under the current circumstances, that we have no choice but to place your team that is present in Mauiwowee under house arrest at their quarters in W.M.D.'s Inc.'s Headquarters.

Thank you for your attention to this most important issue.

They are under constant GovCorp protection and will come to no harm from anyone. Research has been stepped up in the hopes of getting the weapon under production as soon as possible, hopefully within the next few months. The development of the weapon is continuing as planned, and all previous agreements hold true. A prototype delivery system is currently being tested, and we think that it will prove particularly effective. We hope that the business partnership will only be enhanced ny the Corporation.

Dear Mr. Breschnev:

Please provide us with the information needed to communicate with our scientists working with you on the delivery system developement. As a gesture of good faith in this matter, you may communicate with your team via 256 bit (or better) encrypted email directed to the full name of your team's member @WMDInc.com (for example, John Smith@WMDInc.com).

Once we've communicated with our team we will inform you of the advances we have made in the manufacture process (many of which we acknowledge are at least partially the result of your team's understanding and ideas) as well as a significant idea we have come up with regarding delivery systems that we need the team in your country to test.

Thank you for working with us in this most significant project.
Sincerely,
Gen. Jack T. Ripper
CEO, W.M.D. Inc.

P.S. I have unofficial confirmation from King 'Lude II that, depending on how, what we predict will be a civil war in your country, turns out, we may be interested in either (1) stock and a seat on your board of directors or (2) Offering complete asylum to your directors and CEO as well as moving the entire Cellulite delivery system development team back here to Mauiwowee.

As you understand, our interest is in development of the ultimate nanite technology and weapon for protection of ourselves and our allies.

Our most advanced submarine, the H.M.S. Bhaung has been directed to your waters with orders to stand off, avoid detection by anyone and await further orders regarding potential evacuation of personnel from the Empire.
Thank you for your prompt reply on this matter.

We will provide you with a direct electronic link encrypted with a one-time pad cypher for use in communicating with your team. You will contact your team members through the address GovCorp-(name)@GovCorp.com. These transmissions will be entirely secure due to said one-time pad cypher. At the completion of the project, the account will be terminated, and all messages will be erased, if not backed up on other media. To make direct contact with our government you will access this account X73-IGOR-GOV@IGOR.IGOR. This account will also be encrypted. From now on all communication will occur via these accounts. Thank you for your reassurances. We have communicated with our team leader and ensured all is well. Your team has been released from house arrest, but has been directed to communicate with you only via the IGOR-GOV pad cipher account. As to our advances, the ones that count the most and should be of the most interest to the delivery system team; a minimal flight capability has been added to the nanites. The flight capability is dependent though upon air density and pressure. Speak with your physics epxerts, but basically, full, free flight can be achieved at sea level air pressure with a humidity factor of no more than 70%. Wind is an issue that affects flight, but in winds of less than 4 m.p.h. it would appear directed, targeted flight is possible. Much of this advancement is due to your team and we thank you for their assistance.

Secondly, our xenobiology team has made a signficant breakthrough in their research regarding mosquitoes, scent and phermones. They assure us that they will certainly be able to determine scents and chemical issues that attract mosquitoes to bite. See a news report of their publicly available research here (clearly much is classified and not available for general press releases): http://content.health.msn.com/content/article/90/100719.htm?GT1=4244

The team is extremely excited about the idea of development of Cellulite nanites that can be programmed to "attack" people that only exude a certain scent. For example, imagine dropping over a country 1 ton of loose nanites (i.e. several quintillion of them) that have flight abilities and that have been programmed to "bite" only humans that smell of gunpowder related nitrites. Clearly, this lessens the risk of harm to all but combatents, but increases the risk to opposing army troops. What we need you to work on with your team, should this idea excite them as much as our team is excited, is development of a "stinger" technology for the nanites. As your team knows, merely landing on the skin won't work. We need a way for the nanites to "inject" themselves under the skin and we have to ensure that any "stinger" ideas you come up with do not signficantly affect the flight ability of the nanites.

Sincerely,
Gen. Jack T. Ripper

((OOC: Time to wrap this up))

The black sedan pulled in front of the tower that was being used as field command for the Generian military forces. There was a man in the tower that Tayanovich knew from the old days. Somehow this man had been able to keep his job through the turmoil of the Corporate takeover. The man's name was Sveschkin. He had been Tayanovich's superior as a member of the military council. Now, he would become Tayanovich's ally in what he was about to do.

Josef Sveschkin was staring out of the window of his well furnished office when Tayanovich stepped into the office. He had been under house arrest since Taynovich's arrival, for Tayanovich was to take his job. There was a single armed soldier waiting in the corner. He saluted when the General entered the room. Sveschkin turned and the men shook hands.

"I suppose everything is in order than, Josef," asked Tayanovich.

"The men have their orders," replied Sveschkin.

"But will they fight?"

"They will fight for you, and for the Emperor."

"How is the Emperor doing?"

"He has a nasty case of pnemeonia from the damp cell, but he is being treated by our men now."

"And you disposed of the original guards?"

"No one will ever know the difference. You just take care of the operation. Leave the government up to me. I trust you have not forgotten our agreement?"

"Twenty Million dollars wired to your account, and a villa in the South Pacific. Don't worry Sveschkin, everything is in order."

"Then I suppose it is time. Follow me."

The two old soldiers left the office, leaving the Imperial soldier. They proceeded down a hallway to a large room full of cameras, apparently a Corporate television studio. General Tayanovich stepped in front of the cameras. The technicians flipped the switches and Tayanovich was on the air, in every home and portable screen across the nation.

"Greetings, Generian citizens. My name is General Josef Tayanovich. I am here to tell you that your Emperor is still alive. He is in the custody of my soldiers and will soon be returned to power. The Corporation that is presiding over you will not stand for much longer. Their own fist has turned against them. By the time this broadcast ends, soldiers of the true Empire will be moving to restore what we have lost in these brutal years. Any military or intelligence personnel listening to this, I urge you to take up arms against the defiling Corporate scum that have tarnished the name of Generia. Those who stand against us will be shown no mercy. Good afternoon."

The cameras flicked off and Tayanovich, accompanied by a dozen Imperial Praetorian guards, still dressed in the uniforms of the corporation, mounted the staircase to the roof and boarded a black helicopter.

--00--

At approximately 4:15 PM on a hot August day, the GovCorp corporation was brutally overthrown by sections of its own military arm. In the slums, approximately 2/3 of the Corporate force, still loyal to the True Empire, turned on the other soldiers, cutting them down in minutes. Together, with a large group of Generian citizens, they stormed the corporate barricades and entered the towers, and the upper sections of the city. Utilizing Corporate skywalks, the army, grouped with other loyalist military divisions moved throughout the city, eliminating resistance with speed and complete precision. Each major GovCorp facility had been infiltrated by loyalists early in the campaign, and when the event that would become known as the Second Conception began, these moles began their work from the inside. The Corporation was decapitated in minutes, and its soldiers were left without leadership. Those who were not killed either put their weapons down in surrender, or joined the rebellion that was sweeping through the city. The Main Intelligence Building was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting the Empire had ever seen, the agents and personell holding off the loyalist army while they tried to erase or take all of the Intelligence data they had. The rebels eventually broke through, saving many of the Corporate records from destruction. Most of the Corporate agents were terminated during the battle. The agents who had joined the Emperor's force managed to surround Kobak before he could make it to a Corporate chopper. Kobak did not survive this encounter, commiting suicide before he could be apprehended. When the Imperial army broke through the ground level GovCorp tower blockade, they had to fight through 200 stories of resistence. Luckily, the moles on the inside helped substantially in removing many of the loyalist soldiers, and by planting strategic explosive devices. Tayanovich's personal detachment landed on the roof of the building, sweeping inward and sealing off the executive suites. In the boardroom, an inconspicuous looking waiter wheeled in a cart with covered silver tray, supposedly containing the executives meal, The bellboy cast the cover aside revealing an assault rifle, and killed 11 of the 12 board executives. The man was Ivan Cac, former Intelligence Agent, later to become head of the new Generian Imperial Intelligence Department.

When Tatyanovich heard the battle raging outside of his door he panicked. Pulling a low caliber pistol from his jacket he shot the remaing board member in the shoulder, and ran, away from the door. When Tayanovich and his soldiers burst into the room, all they found was a bleeding executive, a frightened guard, and a large, man-sized hole in the magnificent plate glass window.

Emperor Vladimir Kreschnev lay in a hospital bed in Generia City Hospital's emergency ward. His case of Pnemonia had worsened substantially, tot he point where the Emperor could barely speak. The once majestic figure now seemed small and insignifigant. He was not expected to last the night. Kreschnev had anticipated that he would not be able to preside over his nation again, and so had secretly named his heir. Kreschnev had no sons of his own blood, but had an adopted son by the name Leon Bahadori Kreschnev. An Azerbaijani by birth, he had been taken in as a refugee and later adopted by the Emperor. His existence was a closely guarded secret, as he was the Emperor's only eligible heir. On this day the Emperor gave specific instructions for how the succession would take place. His son would change his name to Vladimir Kreschnev II. As Leon was blessed with a light skin complexion contrary to his countrymen, he would easily pass as fullblood Generian. The succession would occur the day after the Emperor's passing, and Leon's coronation would be a public event.

That night Emperor Vladimir Kreschnev I, who had led his nation through so much, dies of Pnemonia. The next day the news was made public and the successor was announced. On the second day the coronation occured, exactly as the late Emperor had instructed. The old GovCorp tower went through a major renovation, and became the new seat of the Generian Imperial Government. Areas of the city were bulldozed in preparation for the construction of a new Imperial Palace. Vladimir Kreschnev II quietly appointed his new cabinet, constructed from loyalist forces and former followers of the Corporation. As promised, Josef Sveschkin left on a plane to a South Pacific island to live in luxury with government money.

Thus, the NAS wishes peace between our nations, and let bygones be bygones. Now is the time to look to the future, rather than dwell upon the past.

Official Imperial Statement-

We greatly respect your desire to overlook the past, and we appreciate your aid wholeheartedly in toppling GovCorp. As the new ruler of the Empire, I look to clear the slate of all the problems that the Empire had in the past. I hope that old enemies can now become new friends. We would be most honored to accept peace between our nations, and look towards an excellent future between our nations.

((OOC: First, just to avoid confusion, none of the operations in McQuaid are public. They are completely secret. In fact publically, we support McQuaid, but our covert agents are trying to seek out and contact the terrorists to assist them later. There are no open hostilities between our nations, but as it is our habit to antagonize each other, our government is privately going to support the terrorists. Until anything public breaks out you do not need to act on the alliance, and may conduct yourself however you please. Do not feel compelled to follow my lead in this situation, because i am not sure where it is going. All I know is that I think, somehow, at the end of this, McQuaid and I will be allied. Our alliance is still intact, assuming that you want it to be so.))

Okay.
