When the house of Lords was asked about purchasing these aircraft, the house burst into laughter. Sorry, but no.

We are quite happy with our F/A-18 Hornet's that we produce locally.

OOC:

It would seem you take this product out of context. It is marketed as and very much designed for low-level air defence. It is not a cutting edge fighter, not by any means. It is simply better than having nothing, plus with avionics upgrades and better AAMs, you can still shoot down an F18 with one of these if you really tried.

IC:

Reading the message, Air Marshal Vrezhnov laughed to himself... my, these fools, if only they knew what WE were using for air defence...

ooc: Quite. There's no point showing off with an F/A-18, which is no match for the absolute best. Still, I caution against getting carried away with the capabilities of the Su-9alike. To make it effective in modern air to air combat one would have to fit it with beyond visual range air to air missiles. This would mean a complete overhaul- the whole nose, the air intake, and all that, would have to be utterly redesigned to house a radar worth having, or radar-guided AAMs would remain a no no. There's some good IR-guided AAMs such as Russian R-73/AA-11, but they can only acquire targets to a certain range far short of good radar-guided weapons, and to get the best IR-guided AAMs like that would cost significantly more than the aircraft you're selling, anyway. Basically, I wouldn't give this aircraft a chance in hell of doing even slightly significant damage to an enemy in the air defence role. There are exceptions, of course- a 3rd world nation surrounded by other 3rd world nations might find it more than capable against enemy MiG-15s or Sabres and suchlike, or against early jet bombers.

However, it does have a potential value, though I believe there are better and even more cost effective air frames for this role. As in the Choson People's Republic of Dra-pol, obsolete aircraft such as this could be used as dispensable first strike ground attack aircraft- we are currently producing thousands of S-5 "Ultra Shinden" which is a sub-sonic jet aircraft based originally on the airframe of a Japanese experimental canard piston-engine aircraft from the Second World War. These would swamp enemy air defences and disrupt airfields with cannons, unguided rockets, and free-fall bombs before more effective aircraft with laser, IR, and radar guided weapons come in to take advantage of the chaos.

But, anyway, good luck selling these- I would like to see more people playing struggling 3rd world nations. Precious few are brave enough. Oh! You know, I may have a customer in mind for you. I'll get my hassling-stick.

OOC: I agree with what your saying, this aircraft really is our bottom end product as such, there is a MiG-21 BiS variant also produced, which in my opinion is the bare minimum required for a defensive fighter. However the Su-9, as you rightly say, can be used against bombers. Which, given the prediliction among some people in here to say, 'I'm going to bomb you with 100 B52s', does give smaller, less developed nations the chance to say, 'well, I've got 50 Su-9s - so come ahead!'

The figures for the Lasatanian air force (detailed below) give an inidication of the air defence strategy I'm trying to base it on, i.e very much a soviet model with seperate air arms.
The PVO may be bang up to date but the rest of its rather aging in bits, a bit like the Russian air force I suppose!

ooc: I agree with Dra-Pol. It doesn't have much use as a fighter, except for target practice for the other side. However, a large number of these aircraft used in a strike role with an updated bombsight would be more than worth the cost of the equipment. (That is, if you arent concerned about casualties :))
