Creation of the Dominion

The Armed Dominion of Great Mateo is one of the youngest, yet one of the most internationally active, members of the Unified Kelanthian League. Like a phoenix from the ashes, GM rose from the crumbled United Alcardian States. The actions of Arden Rana had caused millions from all over the UAS to flee; unable to return to their native lands after the UAS splintered, a large group of refugees eventually chose to settle an unclaimed territory to the southeast of the Federation of the Eternal Flame. Left uninhabited due to the natural features that divided it from the rest of the region, the area was the perfect place to securely establish a colony.

Led by Mateo McGrath, a foreigner of unknown origin, one group of colonists established the port known as St. Thome's on the eastern coast. As word of the colony spread, the city became a chief port-of-call for merchant ships traveling throughout the newly formed Reformed Alcardian States, and new settlers began flooding in. From this, chaos rose; clashes between the original settlers and the newcomers were frequent. It was now that McGrath first established himself as a dominant force throughout the land. Using his influence in St. Thome's, McGrath was able to raise a militia numbering in the tens of thousands. Christening themselves the 1st Matean Army, McGrath's forces spread throughout the land, subjugating by force the areas that would not restore order voluntarily. McGrath himself spearheaded the recon teams for the most difficult operations, earning a reputation for being brutally efficient at accomplishing his goals. Within a year of the initial operations, McGrath had united the entire colony under one banner; his banner. In recognition of both himself and the militia that had aided him in his rise to power, McGrath gave the colony an official name for the first time - The Armed Dominion of Great Mateo. Under McGrath's guidance, the economic and military influence of what was once a tiny, refugees' hideaway ballooned.

It was at this time that the government of the Federation of the Eternal Flame first began to pay serious attention to GM. Though aware of it before, the FEF government had considered it too insignifigant to be worth paying attention to. But now, the colony presented itself as a true growing power, both economically, militarily, and politically; and it shared a border with FEF. Many were further disturbed by the complete lack of background intel on McGrath; it was as if he had simply materialized when the colony was first established. The only intelligence on him consisted of tales and rumours of his campaigns across Great Mateo; these only further disheartened the majority of Flamean officials, who now considered him a direct threat to the well being of FEF. The only man inside the Flamean government who was not panicking what the one who controlled the most power: Reiko Hidama, founder and President. Hidama was unlike the other members of his government; he was not a career politician, he was a military man seemingly forced into is current role. A former member of the Alcardian Special Forces, Hidama was more impressed than scared by the accomplishments of the man building a powerhouse to the south. He had suspicions regarding who McGrath really was, but could not be sure without meeting him face to face. Taking what many considered a foolish risk, Hidama arranged a face to face meeting with McGrath- a meeting in which all of Hidama's suspicions were confirmed. There was a reason Mateo McGrath had seemed to materialize when the colony was created- he HAD simply materialized. McGrath's true name was Matthias Ekinci, a former Alcardian citizen, and member of Hidama's SpecOps squad. Ekinci had deserted the Alcardian military with Hidama early on in Rana's reign, but had refused to join Hidama in the creation of FEF; he then promptly disappeared.

Secure in mind as well as belief, Hidama returned to FEF. Refusing to divulge information about the meeting to anyone, he ignored the warnings and threats from the other members of the government, and immediately set about establishing diplomatic ties with GM. When a large number of Flameans immigrated to GM the following year, Hidama prepared to officially back and recognize GM as a nation. However, the Flamean government council wanted nothing to do with this. The two groups argued bitterly back and forth for months, because the council finally gave way- but left one condition: GM must hold elections before being recognized by FEF. Understanding what was at stake, McGrath complied. In a rather unsurprising turn of events, he received 99% of the vote and was installed as President for Life. Reluctantly, the members of the council signed Hidama's recognition proposal into effect, and the Armed Dominion of Great Mateo entered the RAS with FEF backing.

Rise of the Dominion

After emerging from the implosion of the RAS (See: UKL History (http://ukl.netfirms.com/history.html)), GM began a period of rapid growth, both economically and militarily. Using foreign aid donations from FEF as a springboard, GM established the now massive Great Matean Industries, which soon released its first product, the GM Manta class fast attack minisub. Reinvesting its early profits back into GMI, the government owned corporation took off, quickly becoming a major rival of the fellow regional company the Kelanthian Arms Conglomerate in terms of size and sales. During this period, the overall economy of GM boomed, shooting from the UN classification of 'Good' to 'Frightening'. Continuing to concentrate on domestic issues, McGrath kept the nation largely uninvolved with international politics at this time, and began to build up the Dominion's military. As the economic power and profits from GMI increased, GM's military grew at a seemingly exponential rate. The Great Matean armed forces were soon recognized as a force to be reckoned with among the former RAS nations.

Seclusion of the Dominion

A still mysterious time in GM's history. For a period of approximately 4 years immediately following the creation of the Unified Kelanthian League, GM cut off all contact with the majority of the outside world. GMI was shut down, and all political connections were severed. Roughly 4 years later, GM resumed international activity at a level never before seen, the reason for which has never been explained. Information regarding this time period is best conveyed in a GM Associated Press news article released after the nation emerged from its period of isolation:


Great Mateo ended its four year period of isolation today, reopening its global markets and annoucing that it plans to resume all activities regarding international commerce.

Four years ago, GM quietly seperated itself from the outside world, cutting off all relationships with the governments of other nations. Communication was made only with its closest regional allies, who would not present the rest of the world with a reason as to GM's sudden change of policy.

The Great Matean government has still not provided an explanation as to its decision, but does not believe it will be of crucial importance. "This short period in our nation's history is exactly that - history," said president Teo McGrath during a speech given on the lawn of the presidential complex in Teo, GM's capital, "While we're sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused any other nations, we believed it was in the best interest of GM at the time. Now that it has ended, we look forward to again becoming an active participant in global politics and commerce, and hope this will lead to a prosperous future for all."

A Mardi Gras like feeling was present through out many of GM's cities and towns today, with citizens celebrating the government's decision. "Things have been kind of hard for some of us," said Rick Hashton, a former international stock broker and resident of Kartha. "But with this, we'll be able to reset things to as they once were and get back on our feet."

Rebirth of the Dominion

After emerging from its isolationist period, GM reached a level of international activity never before seen. GMI was nearly doubled in size, and the corporation began actively advertising and seeking production contracts with other nations. GM first became politically active at the international level at this time, establishing embassies in several foreign nations as well as welcoming them to do the same inside of the Dominion. GM has entered several conflicts at this point in a mediator\peacekeeper role as well, and participated in the destruction of the global terror known as Fascist White States. The Dominion is currently participating in a wide variety of cooperative military technology development projects, has established a number of military bases on foreign soil, and is a Protector member of the Legion of Defense and a Founding Member of the Council of Air Power, which is drafted the charter for.
