Allanean Government official advertisement

In an effort to secure our borders from Edolian aggression, we announce the Axackal Border Defense Initiative.

In the ABDI, we would mount 60 30" ETC cannons along the border (at 10-mile intervals), backed up with 100 10"-inch ETC cannons at 6-mile intervals and 600 SCUD launchers. All cannons and launchers, including the nuclear reactors powering them, will be housed in protective silos.

OOC: Aggression?

IC: In the effort to prevent incursion by the communist aggressors, we will relocate 20 Mechanised Infantry Divisions, the Sniper Division, and the Ted Nugent Division to bases along the border. UNAPS observers are invited to oversee the process and ascertiain the plans are not offensive.

Obviously you havn't looked at logistical nightmare that would cause or looked at an air attack.

I think you need look over your plans and change a few things. A major drawback of having these massive fixed position is that they are useless if as little as 2 or 3 guns are taken down.

Aye, and to be honest if there wasn't such a huge technological and qualitive gulf between the two oppossing forces we would be worried. This isnt a very subtle move which is why I don't think he is planning an invasion just yet.

Im assuming Allanea wants to provoke Edolia or the UnAPS into actually doing something. Edolia hasnt battered an eyelid towards the Accord since Allanea's last disastrous attempt at taking Axackal.

Indeed, there is a huge technological and qualitative gulf between the Accord and the UNAPS, and it's growing daily. To enhance it, we will position 80 more mechanized inafntry division - bringing the total number to 100, a full half of our ground forces, or 700,000 combat troops - at that border.

Being that we believe that the UNAPS is an aggressive alliance, our forces shall remain vigilant at this stage and until moves for peace are made by the UNAPS.

This is our final statement on the matter.

OOC: No offence Allanea, but massive fixed positions are of less use nowadays. The French learned that in WWII against the Geramn Britzkieg. Not saying there completely useless mind you - just less effective than you might think.

OOC: True, but you will note that Belgium is a much smaller country than France. If your own country is small, your tactic is more effective - and cheaper. You may of course do as you see fit within your own borders. My nation would not see it as a hostile act.

[Allanea, if you truly had a technological advantage you wouldn't have to resort to crap like this. And I hope that that "Sniper" division isn't really composed of snipers. The cost of training and equiping would be horrendous and any tactical or strategic value almost non-existant.]

Actually, Scandavian, I disagree on that one:

[Yeah, I get that you've trained all of these people but do you realize the cost? Training per man for a sniper is about a quarter million, military-grade sniper rifles are $2,000+, and ghille suits cost at least $400 to make. So, assuming you have around 9,000 snipers in a division the costs (at a minumum) would be $2,046,600,000 for the snipers alone, never mind things like logistics (I'm suddenly reminded about the extremely precise and expensive ammo snipers use) or transport.

Also, snipers only work in two-man teams for a reason. If you start grouping them into platoons, companies, battalions, and so forth you loose the one thing that keeps snipers alive: stealth. If I knew where this division was, I'd drop a lot of ordinance on it just so you would loose all of this expertise.]

[Scandavian, in Israel, a sniper training course lasts four weeks and involves him firing 500 rounds of ammo. That does not cost 250,000. Also, remember that a lot of marksmanship is taught in Allanean schools.

Also, the division grouping is administrative only. In actualy combat use, the snipers will be spread out over a huge area.]

[Oh, so these "snipers" are at best designated marksmen. Here I was thinking you were actually trying to field something like the snipers the USMC trains.

And why do you have this obsession with marksmanship? Have you ever seen sniper training? Do you know that only 20% of sniper training consists of actual shooting?]

[No: I mean real snipers:

OOC: I guess so. Probably not greatly effective but it might help improve to a limited degree your soldiers capability, particularly for a culture where considerable value is placed on one's marksmanship.

Yeah
most of the training is on camouflage, stalking, observation skills, and anti-sniper tactics. marksmanship is neccesary but not a huge part of sniper school.

Exactly, also note that training for regular Allanean infantry is very heavy on marksmanship.

PB, it takes a month to train a sniper in Israel and a year in Allanea.
