Death at sea, battleship attacked

IDF

Meditaranean Sea, 20 miles Southeast of Sicily, Battleship USS Arizona

“sound 3rd watch bells,” called the 1st officer of the Arizona class BBG USS Arizona as he saw the digital clock go to 0800.

“Aye sir, sounding watch bells on 1MC,” called the Chief of the Watch.

“Gotta love that breeze,” called Rear Admiral Billy Williams from the starboard bridge wing. It was a habit of his to take in the morning breeze. “Steer us left 5 degrees rudder for a course of 108. I want to get us home soon. I want turns for 10 revolutions. Get us to 18 knots now.”

“Aye sir,” called the XO. “Left 5 degrees on rudder, steer course 108. Make 10 revs per knot, set speed for 18 knots.

“rudder is left 5,” called Lieutenant J.G. John Urban from the helm. “bringing rudder amidships at new course 108. engines going for 10 revolutions at 18 knots. Helm aye,”

“How is the breeze this morning my Admiral?” called the XO, he was Captain Jack Springer, a 22 year veteran of the IDF navy and seeking his own command.

“Fine Jack,” said Admiral Williams. “I don't like this.”

“What's not to like Sir?” asked the XO.

“Traveling alone in the Med,” said the CO.

“Why not?” asked the XO.

“I just don't like it, we are traveling in a world with many enemies. A Battleship like this is a big target and ought to be in an SAG, not solo as we are now,” said the CO.

“Come on Sir,” said the XO. “This battleship was designed to work alone, heck it even has AEGIS II for air defense.”

“Sure it may have that, but this ship is no longer top of the line. I add this is a 20 year old ship. We need a refit desperately. The AEGIS isn't doing us any good, our air search radar is out right now,” said the CO.

“That is bad,” said the XO. “Have you called in any support we'll need it.”

“Yes, but the rest of the fleet is working the Greek blockade,” said the CO. “I guess the flagship of the 8th fleet's 2nd SAG isn't important enough to defend.”

“It's that damn beurocracy,” said the XO.

“I know,” agreed the CO. “At least we are heading home. I just found out that the ship will undergo a 48 week refit.”

“She sure needs it,” said the XO. “Then Arizona will be feared once more.”

“Yes she will,” said the CO as he looked over at the silhouettes of a carrier, 3 other battleships, and a few dozen smaller ships and subs that had succombed to the Arizona over her 20 years of heavy fighting and patrol.

That night, 2100 local time; 35 miles north of Libya
“SPY-1F Radar is still out,” said the Radio engineer into the bridge phone. “I think it is simply dead.”

“Shit,” said the XO, he was at the Conn during this watch. “Nav, how long until we are within fleet RADAR coverage?”

“At current speed I say 8 hours under calm seas,” responded Nav.

“Give me flank speed, make turns for 33 knots, 24 revolutions now!” called the XO.

“Helm aye, making turns at 24 revs for 33 knots aye.”

2112 local time

“Don't you love late evening watch?” asked Gunnersmate 1st class Jim “Gunny” Stecker from his post of main gun turret #3.

“Yep, it's nice and quiet,” responded his station officer,” Ensign Bernie Mac. He was in charge of the 4 20in guns at turret #3. They were facing aft right now at rest position. The turret was just aft of the after super-structure.

“I do like the view,” said Stecker as he looked through his binoculors.

“Yep,” said Mac as he did the same. “Say, what are those moving lights to port?”

“I don't know,” responded Stecker. “I count 3, coming down same path, seem to be headed for us!”

“Shit you're right,” said Mac. “I think we have a range of 4 miles! Call the bridge!”

“I'm trying! said Stecker. “I can't get through.”

“Why the F*** can't they see that on RADAR and fire on it!” yelled Mac.

The warning never did reach the bridge. The earlier rains had made the steel deck slippery so no one was on it and the command staff was negligent not to post watchmen.

The 3(type to be determined once responsibility is taken) missiles would all hit.
The 1st hit the helicopter hanger 65 feet behind turret 3. The 750 pound warhead exploded once 20 feet inside the hanger and through the heavy armor plates. The explosion rocked the ship and set the helicopter fuel storarage tanksand weapons that were loaded on one of the Apaches inside the hanger on fire. The jet fuel sent flames 150 feet in the air. Secondary explosions sent flaming fuel on other parts of the ship and through the holes in the deck.

The 2nd hit right in front of turret 3. The hit was 25 feet below the main deck. The explosion destroyed the turret. And caused ammunition shells inside to explode creating very large secondary explosions. The shell fragments ripped through the decks and allowed fire to quickly engulf the 275 men who had their bunks in the sleeping quarter between turrets 3 and 4.

The 3rd missile was targeted to hit the VLS magazines aft of turret 4, but it went off track and went forwards to hit the port side directly amidships above the main deck to hit the superstructure. Some fragments from this explosion went straight through the bridge killing many of the officers and wounding others. The XO survived, but was severly wounded. His right leg was mangled by shrapnel from the explosion. He saw that many of the senior officers had died. The Admiral's quarters were 50 feet from the explosion. He was instantly killed.

“Sir! Are you alright,” asked the Radio operyator.

“I don't know!” yelled an angry XO. “Get a distress call out.”

“We are getting a call from engineering sir,” said Radio.”

“Patch them through.”

“Sir,” called Chief Engineer Captain 2nd rank Mark Ramsey. “We lost main power. We are now runnin' emergency systems off of battery. We can do it for 6 hours max, but the power routers are damages so it will be much less.”

“We had to take all 4 reactors off line,” continued the engineer. “We may have leaks. #4 is severly damaged and OK, now it is confirmed, 4 is leaking. Primary lead shields were destroyed. Watertight lead doors are now closing, 4 has leaked into control room for reactors 4 and 3. I'm not sure our doors will contain radioactive spread.”

“Why are 1 and 2 offline,” asked the XO.

“We have plenty of shock damage,” said the Engineer. “Expect there to be ruptured steam vessels. The reactor is useless right now. All must be taken offline for minimum 16 hours if there is no damage. 3 and 4 can't be put on line until we get to base. I have the 2 emergency diesels being checked out, but #2 was on port and likely gone. 1 has shock damage and won't be able to run for 12 hours.

“So we are a sitting duck,” said the XO.

“Yes,” said the engineer. “We can't move at all, even when we get diesel 1 up we will go 3 knots max. But, our rudder is out, shock killed the hydraulic lines and our thruster are gone. We can't give power for weapon systems, just fire control and damage control.”

“We will need flooding control too,” said the XO. “Bridge flood board shows water flooding deck K at sections 32-38.”

“Shit,” said the engineer. “My flood board is out. I will have problems with this, most of my engineering crew was taken out by one of the missiles.”

“work on it. That will be all,” said the XO.

“I have emegency radio ready and am transmitting,” responded the radio officer.

Aboard the DN Vintage

"Sir, we have an unidentified vessel, 248 kilometers out and steaming further into our exclusion zone."

"XO, sound the alarm. Condition 1, Battlestations."

"Aye, Captain." The XO walked over to the intercom system and picked up the control.

"This is the XO. Sound the alarm, Condition 1 - All crew, man your battlestations. <<whistles blows>> I repeat, Condition 1 - All crew, man your battlestations. This is not a drill. <<whistle blows yet again>>"

The crew aboard the ship rushed across each deck running towards their battlestations. Gun systems were brought online, weapons systems were targeting and missiles were preparing to launch. Doujin Naval Doctrine provided that any warship entering the 250 KM exclusion zone around the any Doujin Naval Asset was to be fired upon.

The weather was calm, although the sky was cloudy. Hours ago a small storm passed through the area, heading out in direction towards the rogue vessel. The brisk, late night wind kept all men on their toes as they waited for the order to be given. The order to fire upon the rogue vessel and 'steam' towards it to gather further intelligence.

"That's it, it's a warship. You have permission, release weapons lock. I repeat, fire on that vessel."

"Aye, Captain." Missile Control systems lit up, and all of a sudden three Mystic Anti-Shipping missiles were fired at the unidentified warship. Minutes later, two helicopters took off in the direction of the warship from the order of the Captain, to determine damage done, order them to surrender their vessel, and to gather further intelligence on what exact type of warship it was and where it came from.

The Captain walked over to the Communications Station and ordered the Ensign posted there to send a FLASH Priority message to Doujin Naval Command, informing them that the Vintage opened fire on a ship that entered it's exclusion zone.

OOC: There, happy IDF?

"Sir... I'm picking up something through the optical light transducer scope..." shouted a man with binoculars pressed to his face...

"What the hell is it?" returned the apparant commander of the vessel...

"Hard to tell... Its large... Gray... Has lots of things poking up... I think its a large whale... Not sure."

"... Preposterous..." was the commander's reply. "Let me have a look."

"Aye" the lieutenant handed the commander the field glasses... The commander then pressed them to his face and looked at the vessel...

"My God..." he slowly dropped the glasses from his face and glanced, rather grimly, to the lieutenant... "It's Harry the giant blue whale... Harry comes out of nowhere and eats unsuspecting naval vessels... We've caught him in the act of feeding!"

The lieutenant gasped and stared in awe at the ship, snatching the field glasses away from the commander... The commander fumbles for some camera to take a picture. The lieutenant watched the ship intently. Out of the corner of his eyes came three streaks...

"Hey, look... Fireworks!" The three objects slammed into the ship and erupted into balls of fire. The faint noise of klaxons and alarms could be heard... "Woah... Sweeeeeeeeeeeet..." A very faint roar could be heard from behind them, they didn't look... Suddenly, a shadow enveloped their ship and they turned to look...

The commander squeeked then yelled, "TURN STARBOARD! POWER TO FULL!"

"AYE!" shouted the Lieutenant as he grabbed ahold of the rudder stick and pulled the starting cord for the 2.5HP outboard, it 'zzz'd to life and they moved about two inches before slamming into cold steel.

-------------------------

Suddenly, aboard one of the Doujin naval vessels, a few faint thumps were heard on their main hull... A minute later and six deflated yellow dinghies were left in the wake, a small Soviet Bloc flag floated in the water...

Soviet Bloc National News-

"Today was a very grievous day all across Soviet Bloc as news was reported of the apparant destruction of the entire ARSB Navy in one swift, debilitating stroke by the Evil Empire of Doujin. There were no survivors as the six ships were sunk without mercy by Doujin naval vessels. The ARSB ships were on routine patrol when they prepared to engage an unidentified ship, which some eye-witnesses claim was actually Harry the giant blue whale which was doused with radioactive water when it was but a wee little whale. *The anchor's eyes light up at this point* That report, however, has not been validated. *Anchor's face returns back to its emotionless self* Doujin, taking advantage of the situation, came out of nowhere and completely destroyed our fleet. ARSB government officials have no comment and are rather hesitant on doing anything about it. This has been an official '*TAG* but not really' by the SBNN, have a good day..."

[code:1:65c09df703]from Admiral Ryan, USS David Ben Guirion
TO: USS Arizona:
We have dispatched 4 ships, 2 Ticonderoga II CG and 2 Burke DDG, ETA of 2 hours. They will help fight the fires.

Our 8 S-3C Vikings are airborne and 30 minutes away, they will drop the fire fighting solution used to fight forest fires. Our 8 CH-60s are each carrying 16 of our fire fighters to help. They will return to us and bring more.[/code:1:65c09df703]

“message has been sent Admiral,” said the group comms officer.

“Good, lets get the UAVs up to find our perpetrator,” ordered the Admiral. “I also want all our 75 F-35B JSFs up now, armed with AAMs and ASMs for combat ops.”

Mossad HQ
“Sir, we have our RORSATs tracking the area of 250 mile radius of Arizona,” said the Satelite chief.

“What did you find?” asked the Director.

“There is only one ship in the area capable of doing this,” siad the satelite chief. “And it is also in the correct bearing of origin for the missiles.”

“I want the UAVs to set a seeker on that ship,” siad the Director to his Naval go between.

“Yes sir,” was the reply.

“I also want our satelites to find out what ship we have,” ordered the Director.

“It will be done sir.”

20 minutes later, USS ben Guirion, CIC
“Sir, the ship Mossad is sending us over is now on UAV scope,” said the operator of UAV 8, there were 24 airborne launched from carriers and other ships.

“What type,” asked the TAO.

“I don't know sir, looks like a Doujin made ship, unsure of origin but this is likely our target.” said the operator.

“Very Well,” said the TAO. “ADMIRAL! We have target and it seems to be the only possible source.”

“Fleet command wants to take this SOB out quick,” said Admiral Ryan. “XO! Sound GQ1”

“aye sir, Battlestations,” said the Vice Admiral in command of the carrier.

“General Quarters, General Quarters, all hands man your battlestations,” called the Bosun into the 1MC. The whole fleet did the same.

“Sir, UAV 8 is ready to fire tracker,” called the operator. “I see other UAVs converging to help with backup trackers.”

“get over target and do a dead drop,” called the TAO. The UAVs were stealthy and built like a small B-2, but they had a much smaller RCS with their size making them the ultimate stealth recon birds. Some could even be armed, but not with enough to do anything to this ship.

“UAV 8 dropping tracker now sir,” called the operator. “It's on.”

“TAO!,” called the Admiral. “Lets hold our JSFs in reserve and have them fly protection cover for the Arizona now.”

“Why sir?” asked the TAO. “I want to fry these SOBs.”

“Good reason,” answered the Admiral. “48 of our Tu-22M Backfires took off from Cyprus 20 minutes ago and are now at a point where we can fire the AS-6 missiles.” Each plane had 6 of the missiles. They could carry that many for the short range mission. The supersonic Anti-ship bombers were any admiral's worst nightmare or best friend depending on what side you were on. The AS-6 missile had 500 lbs of explosives

Tu-22M formation
“We have now 3 tracker bugs on target for our missiles to hit,” called the navigator of the lead plane.

“All planes,” called the group commander. “We can fire in 5 minutes, fire them all when you do, range is going to be 150 miles for our supersonic missiles. I remind you that they will travel at mach 3 for our targets. May they all hit.”

“yes sir,” responded the many pilots.

5 minutes later

“Fire now,” called the commander. “Fire every missile now.”

The planes fired all their missiles. Of the 138 total missiles fired, 21 failed to come under guidance or have rocket start up. The bombers then turned on full afterburner for Cyprus.

thank you all. Any help is wanted. The S-3s have succeeded in helping control the fire, it is still burning below decks, but the superstructure fire is out. other ships are still needed as they can put water through the holes in the port side and upper deck.

We don't want our reactors online even with radiation contained as there can be very small leaks that aren't detected yet or undetected damage. We do want help putting our boilers on line for power. The IDF ships in the area have pumped power into our ship to support our neccesary systems.

Casualties are high, of our 2,450 men onboard, 375 are known dead, 478 are known wounded and 835 are missing.

The DNS Titan a repentance class SSN sub was running its usual surface patrol just outside Italian waters. Commander Bill Johnston was sat on the top of the conning tower taking his last few breathes of fresh air. The patrol was now completed and they were preparing to make the run back to base when a sudden flash on the horizon caught his attention. The plume of smoke that soon followed made it clear that something had just been hit. Something big.

Closeing the hatch as he descended into the conn Bill immediately picked up the intercom.

"Rader, Conn. What the hell was that."

The reply came quickly. The radar operator sounded shocked.

"Conn, Radar. It looks like a battle ship just went up looking at recent traffic I would say it was the Arizona a IDF ship."

Bill hung up the intercom, which chirped to say there was a caller on the other end. The radio operator had obviously been listening into the convocation.

"Conn, Radio. The Arizona is sounding an SOS and says she is dead in the water."

"Radio, Conn. Tell her we are coming and offer assistance."

Bill turned back to the control room and made his way to his seat at the centre.

"Helm set course for the Arizona at best possible speed."

The helmsman responded by setting course.

"Conn, Radio. The Arizona has replied. She has major casualties and needs immediate relief.

Bill sighed the titan may have been a large sub for her class but she had limited medical space. But they had to help. He decided to address the crew.

"All hands prepare to take on casualties, Medical teams set up crew cabins and bunk areas for triage, Radio tell Arizona to send over the wounded. Also inform command of our situation. Everyone else help out however you can. That is all."

He turned back to the Conn.

"All stop, XO lead the relief team."

The Union of People's Republics regrets the waste of lives in this incident.
We offer to mediate conciliation between IDF and Doujin, and are sending a task force composed of Coast Guard Cutters to the area to determine the precise location of the Arizona at the time it was attacked.
The purpose is to determine whether the Arizona may have, in fact, accidently drifted into Doujin waters. Or if Doujin deliberately attacked the Arizona while it was still international waters just outside Doujin's maritime boundary. This is not an act of war against Doujin, we are sending only Coast Guard Cutters. We ask for the cooperation of IDF and Doujin in our investigation.

OOC: I'll let you repost that - UAVs dropping tracker devices on one of my most advances warships? Please. The DN Vintage is a Thunder Child Mk.2 Refit Battleship - which is merely a carrier and dreadnought escort now, so there is the rest of the Doujin Fleet (Hrafn Warband) that is still with the Vintage. You would never be able to get a 'stealthed UAV' over the Vintage.

It's late here and I'm lazy, how about we just have my Tu-22Ms fire the missiles all over the fleet and turn on AB under fighter cover and turn towards land. My satelites would find them and also my allies in the area (I'm allied with the Ottoman Alliance which pretty much controls most the Med).

Lets have the same number of planes and missiles fired at the ships. Sorry about this, but it's late and I had to wake up at 5:45 (I'm in the same time zone as you based on where I see you live) to get ready for an appointment with my Guidance Counselor to seek info on applying to the US Naval Academy. He said I have the grades and leadership skills they are looking there. Just have to get in better shape which should be easy with my 2.5-3 mile runs I'm doing now. (soon to be up to 5 mile runs)

MOSSAD HQ Tel Aviv, Israel
“Our RORSATs have swept the area and found a Doujin fleet in the bearing of the missile origin. About 120 ships strong,” said the J-3 of naval intel.

“How do you know it's doujin,” asked the Mossad chief.

“besides the numbers, look at this, a Doujin class and you can see other doujin ships. Only Doujin has that many ships and of course that flag ship,” said the J-3.

“Very well,” the navy will plan an attack soon.”

CYPRUS AFB, occupied Greece & Cyprus

“My friends,” began Lt. Gen. Doolittle of the E-767 squadron speaking to his crews. “You know Arizona was attacked. We will know strike Doujin, the nation behind it. You will try to gain contact with the fleet from stations less than 50 miles off of Cyprus. It will be enough for the ground scans to find the fleets for our bombers and missiles. It will be dangerous and some of you may die. You may have to use the satelite controls and fly missiles in on UAV mode if radar contact is lost. Who is up to this dangerous mission?”

“The 2nd surveillance air wing sir!” yelled the flight crews in unison. There were over 1,000 of men assigned to the 25 E-767 birds.

“Good,” said the General. “You will be under AEGIS protection, let alone ground based fighter and naval fighters. With your long range radars you will be able to make for land SAM coverage if needed. God bless Yisrael!”

“FOR JERUSALEM!,” yelled the men as they took their planes.

same base 30 minutes later

“You are the elite bomber pilots of IDF,” said the general. He had just bried the pilots of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 12th, and 14th naval bomber wings. There were 180 Tu-22M Backfires in the 6 bomber wings. The planes each had 6 AS-5 anti-ship missiles. The short range of the mission allowed the larger load of missiles with 750 lb warheads. They had a delayed explosion fuse so they would dig into the hulls of ships before exploding. It was similar to the fuses used on JDAMs and other bunker-busters. The pilots were eager to get in the air.

eastern med, USS Magglio Ordonez, Ohio II SSGN, 5 minutes later

“Skip, we have an emergency action message recommend alert 1,” called the radio operator.

“Alert 1 Alert 1 all hands man your battlestation,” yelled the Captain. “Sound General Quarters!”
The Cob made the GQ call on the 1MC, instead of the usual gong came the substitute, the call of “OOOO-EEEEEE-OOOOOO MAGGLIOOOO!” the same call used for when White Sox hero and ship namesake Right-Fielder Magglio Ordonez came to bat.

They authenticated the message and read it aloud.

“To USS Magglio Ordonez:
From COMSUBMED:
you are to go to 150 feet and launch all 176 TASM Tactical Tomahawks at 25 minutes after reading message. You are to fire at the following coordinates down the given bearings, waypoints, and coordinates pinpointed by E-767s, RORSATs, and other intel. sources. You are to then take a reload from sub tender USS Jerry Reinsdorf. The whole deployed SSGN fleet in range will participate. All 18 subs will launch their full complement to ensure maximum damage. All have 176 missiles aboard with 1,200 lb warheads.
Message ends,” read the XO.

“set condition 1TQ for tactical tomahawk launch,” ordered the CO. “helm, pump some water out of MBT. Up 10 on fair water planes. Ahead 1/3 make turns at 8 revs fore 5 knots. Set new depth 1-5-0 feet.”

“Dive aye, coming up to 1-5-0 feet up 10.”

“Helm aye,” slowing to 1/3 for 5 knots.”

20 minutes later
All the subs were on station and an average of 500 miles from the Doujin fleet. The range was from 200 miles and up to 850 miles from the fleet. The longer range ships launched first and the rest of the launches were timed to have the most amount of missiles coming in towards the enemy fleet.

Magglio Ordonez was 300 miles from the fleet and one of the last to launch. When the sub launched missiles, clips of famed Sox Announcer Ken “Hawk” Harrelson were played over the 1MC. The crew heard endless “You can put it on the booooooaaaarrrrddd eee YESSS!” calls along with “HE GAWN”.

Throughout the fleet, 2.5% of the missiles failed to launch the boost phase after leaving the water.

TU-22M Backfires, 250 miles from edge of feet
“This is bomber lead,” said the Col. Who was leading in the air. “We are getting good reads from the AWACs. Their low search is giving us a position of the ships. We can fire at 205 miles.”

“Roger,” said the rest of the pilots. It was tense. They were in huge formations, but under AEGIS protection, on AB, and under air coverage from a dozen IDF carriers who were there for the huge G&C war that had just ended and near home base. They also had land based coverage. The bombers could fly at about the same speed of most fighters when on AB.

“Closing on target fast,” said the leader. “5 minutes till firing position.”

“roger.”

“ready weapons,” called the Col. “Arm them, steady, and FIRE!”

Of the many missiles, 2% had failed as was expected with the design. It was acceptable losses.

Around this time, 225 B-52Hs that had just left IDF bases each launched their 10 CALCM air launched cruise missiles.

57 B-1Bs left IDF bases to head for the fleet along with 62 B-2As. IDF was holding back their fighter bombers for the time being. They would be used later if needed. IDF didn't want a war with Doujin, they just wanted to punish them hoping both sides would accept their losses. IDF feared little with the Whittier pact behind her.

I'm going into subs Doujin, I love the new Virginia's. I agree with the surface navy though. TOm Clancy said it best, the US Navy lost it's heart when the last Battleship was decommissioned. I heard Trimarians are in the future for the US navy. I have a different view than you on Trimarians. I don't like them as I'm sort of conservative in ship design.

I don't want to be like the Royal navy, their navy is a bunch of old small type 42 Duke DDGs. I hate their stupid Ark Royal carriers. UK has a small dinky navy. The US is a 300 ship size modern fleet. I like the stealth ships like DDX. THe US Navy would be better if not for the stupid dems stopping their funding and research.

IDF - we need to fully talk about the Navy :) It's more of the Republicans fault, wasting resources and such - think of the Ohio Class SSBNs that were supposed to be decomissioned that would have freed up billions of dollars but instead were refitted to uneeded SSGNs. And the new Virginia's may or may not stay, it all depends. Britain is becoming more advanced than the US in systems and such, and the Triton is the testbed for the trimaran hull design. The US Navy hasn't set any plans for any trimaran hulled ships, although they are watching the Triton testbeds results.

I would love to have a naval discussion. I think it was wrong to even take out the 4 SSBNs, I'd keep the 1st 4 Ohios as SSBNs. Russia has 21, we have 14 now. China has 1 or 2 and is building more Xias. CLinton killed our budget and took out the 600 ship navy of Reagan. I don't like the British navy, their carrier suck balls and they are your real power projectors. The trimaran will never go through in Brittain as the Labor party will vote down more funding. (I mean they have less than 10 SSNs for gods sake)

Virginia will go through, the 1st of class is on sea trials. Many others have had their keels laid and are in various stages of construction. I think you should still pursue navy, try subs. Or you can go work at Newport News. (I will hopefully command a 688i, Seawolf or Virginia sub)
