The LRRN has chosen to construct a new frigateto replace current LRRN types, such as the Halifax-I patrol frigate.

The Howlin' Wolf class frigate is being built to replace the Halifax-I patrol frigate. The new trimiran design offers advantages in speed, survivability, and radar cross-section over the Halifax-I. It is powered by a hybrid gas/electric system like the one found on the Robert Byrd class coastal defense vessel.
The Howlin' Wolf is armed with a 105mm main gun (equipped with heavy recoil dampers) which gives it an edge over other ships of similar size in gun power. The 105mm main gun, adapted from a towed howitzer, has a maximum range of just over 17km.
It also carries three (not one or two) CDM (Goalkeeper II) missile/gun CIWS systems, giving the Howlin' Wolf formidible anti-missile capability. The Howlin Wolf carries 14 NSM, RBS-15, or Yakhont ASMs in vertical launch silos on either side of the superstructure. The cells blow outward to lessen the damage to the ship's innards in the event of a hit in an ASM bank.
The Howlin' Wolf is armed with 18 SA-N-20 naval SAM systems in a foreward VLS silo, designed to blow upwards in the event of a missile strike there to lessen the damage to the ship's innards.
As for sensors and countermeasures, the Howlin' Wolf is equipped with systems slightly superior to those on the Robert Byrd coastal defense ship.
The Wolf carries two Lynx II ASW/SAR helicopters internally.
Some versions may be outfitted with experimental antimissile laser systems, already in place in ground batteries.
