Trouble Brewing in Gurov Province

Today, several minor riots took place in the troubled south-eastern province of Gurov after Governor Vladmir Sorokin refused to rule out further expansion of federal installations in the area.

The province, who's northerly area contains both the top-secret Roloff airbase and Chekor proving grounds, has been troubled recently by government expansion into it's lands inflaming fierce cries for further independance and autonomy from the central government, who it feels is neglecting the needs of it's people.

Most of the residents of Gurov, the smallest by far of the six provinces, originate from the clan that was most oppressed by the former imperial rulers of Kelonia, and were shipped to the area by the former government in a move which most historians say was a key action in provoking the revolution that saw Premier Maksim Romaninko rise to power after the revolution and years of inter-tribe fighting.

Recently, the tribe has been crying for more autonomic power over it's own lands - "when was the last time we had a leader who was one of our own people?" asked 43-year-old Josef Illin, a resident of provincial capital Nabresk-Gurova. "Mr Sorokin has made some bad decisions, we are getting tired of government expansion into our territory".

Some were more militant, after six were shot dead during rioting at a speech by Mr. Sorokin, who had sought to appease the people of his province. There were also reports of soldiers sent to police the event firing into the rioting crowd (policy states water-cannons and tear-gas are to be used, never automatic weapons) which are being investigated by the security forces' internal review board.

Calls for Mr. Sorokin to resign to prevent further trouble - there were several arrests made of pro-Gurov-independance terrorist operatives recently in an ongoing operation - and for further talks about increasing the autonomy of the region are being heard from across the nation, although the higher echelons of the government are staying strategically silent about the matter...
