The Emperor stood over his hulking obsidian table staring at the document. He was tired -- so tired. His eyes glazed and he rubbed them to clear the haze. It had been a long time he thought since he saw any of his children. They seemed so far away now. How long had it been? He couldn't remember.

The document. His attention shifted again back to the parchment on the cold black table. He read it a third time, slowly. This one was different than the thousands of his forgotten past. This one meant more. This one meant the most. As the sun set, he felt the chill of time. Something was different now, almost imperceptably he could feel it. But it was there all the same. Tonight, the sky was also different. The city somehow more quiet. The air more still.

He picked up his pen and pressed it to the paper. The point began to bleed and form a perfect circle. A sphere of jet black spreading through the fibers. He looked back at the paper and began the movements he had done a hundred thousand times in his life. In that moment, it was done.

He sat for a long time and thought of nothing. His mind wandered like the wind. It was time to go.

He rose to his feet and went to the massive window of his headquartered palace overlooking the city of Psychropolis. The sun was almost gone and its rays were particularly beautiful tonight as they shone through the polluted haze of the cold structures below. He thought it funny that none of its busy inhabitants realized how connected they were -- how much they mattered.

It was time he thought. He reached into his pocket and removed the small device given to him earlier by his best friend and confidant. He unscrewed the cap an pressed the lever. The point ejected quickly and shimmered in the dull remnants of the sunset's rays. He stared at it only briefly, then it was done. He removed the thin syringe from his wrist and it dropped to the marble floor with a crisp metallic click. It was working, he thought. He could feel it start already.

As the evening passed into darkness, he could feel the burning course through his arm and up his neck. It wasn't painful but it was there all the same. He broke out into a horrid sweat and streams began to run down his face and neck. He felt terribly hot and cold at the same time and shivers shook him to the bone.

But as soon as it came, it was gone. He felt normal again but something was still amiss. He couldn't quite place it but it seemed as if his mind was in a surreal haze. Nevertheless, he walked back to the window and stared down onto the cold, dark city below.

He thought about the past and his life began to unfold again. He thought of all of the plans, his decisions, his whims. It was all so tenable he thought, so fleeting and yet so real. He thought of the multitudes and how they would fare. He thought of his son and how he would handle to sheer magnitude of it all. He began to feel unsure as if the marble floor were ice and he almost lost his balance. His mind began to swim -- the haze was getting worse. As he looked into the darkness all he could see was his son's face in the windows reflection. His son. How would it all turn out? He was so unsure. In fact, he was deeply worried.

It was time and he knew it -- he could feel it growing in his psyche. He turned and walked over to the black table. He grabbed the document and headed for the elevator doors which would take him deep below the city.

As the sealed elevator cell began its decent down the long track, he wondered how it would end and when it would begin again. He wasn't afraid of the journey at all. In fact, in a funny way he almost looked forward to the peace. But he was afraid of what awaited him at the end. Very afraid indeed. He quickly put it out of his mind.

http://www.blade-runner.it/images/gallery/tyrell-corp/snap059123.jpg

The city below looked as it always did. Dark, cold, and lonely. He wondered if it would look the same a thousand years from now. How he wished to see it. He had tried to make it different but failed. He knew that there was a price to pay and this was it. He tried to convince himself that he had no choice but deep down inside, he felt it was a lie -- something to chase away the fear. No matter -- it was over. It would have to happen after him or it would not happen at all. From the start, he had the feeling it would be like this and now, he knew it to be his grave.

The elevator cell hummed incessantly on its journey into the darkness below. As it decended through the structure and below the earth into the heart of the underground labarinth, the others were preparing for his arrival. Everything was ready. His son was waiting.

As the elevator cell reached its destination deep in the bowels of the city, it ground to a whining halt and smart whoosh as the doors finally broke their seal and opened. The Emperor had been here many times of strife and he knew its halls well. He stepped out through the doors and walked down a multitude of hallways, corridors, and guarded portals until he finally came to his command center. The guards came to a quick attention as he passed through the entrance and entered his briefing room.

The room was empty except for the plasma screens depicting various information grids. The Emperor slowly walked around the table pondering all the decisions that that had taken place in the past within these walls. It was daunting he thought. His son would never be up to the task. It was immense. As he waited for his eldest, he sat down at the head of the table facing the doorway and pulled out the document from his breast pocket. He placed it on the table and stared at it for a long time although he didn't see any of the words. His mind was wandering in the dreams of his long lost wife and love. How he had missed her when he needed her most of all. After all these years, it was still a wonder to him that given all their technology, she was still lost during the birth of their third and last child -- a daughter.

At last there came the sound he had most dreaded -- the echoed steps of a man approaching him down the hall. They grew near and he knew it was time. As he looked up from the table, he saw himself standing before him at the other end. He knew it to be his eldest son even at the first bootstep.

The eldest entered the room and stood before his father and liege. He was silent for a moment and then came to his senses. "Father, ... " he said with a small, respectful bow, "... it is time". The Emperor hesitated for only a minute and then rose to his feet. Both men walked side-by-side out of the briefing room into the corridors beyond.

"Are all the preparations ready?" asked the Emperor breaking the silence.

"Yes, we've been prepared for some time now." replied his son.

"And what of the Doctor Zirin?"

"He is at the chamber and awaits you sir."

"And your brother and sister?"

"They await you as well sir."

'Very well' thought the Emperor. Everything is ready. This, at least, his eldest was able to complete. Maybe there was hope. They walked down the long corridors to his final resting chambers.

As they walked down the final corridor, the Emperor felt the weakness growing stronger. He felt like he would collapse any minute and he struggled hard to stay coherent in his final moments. He would relish the rest, he thought. He was so tired and his head was pounding with painful pulsations. "The final door" he thought as he stared at the end of the hall. Beyond that door would be his sanctuary.

As the door opened, he saw they were all waiting. His best friend, confidant, and physician Dr. Zirin and his assistants. His minister of defense, law, and commerce. His younger son and lovely daughter. His grandchildren. They were all standing there looking at him. His granddaughter was crying softly. He entered the room and embraced his children and grandchildren one by one. They bid him farewell. He shook the hands of his ministers and gave them some last advise and requests. He then made his way to Dr. Zirin and indicated he was ready.

With his last strength, the Emperor entered the resting chamber and waited. Dr. Zirin and his assistants administered a couple of shots of clear fluid into his veins and watched the Emperors eyes close. The Emperor's vision went black and he felt like he was floating. This was sweet sleep he thought. He embraced it totally.

Now the time was crucial. Dr. Zirin and his assistants hurriedly closed the door to the chamber. With a couple pushes of some buttons and turning of some valves, the chamber was beginning to fill up. Soon it was completely immersed and the body of the Emperor was floating in the -270 degree Fahrenheit frozen solution of liquid nitrogen. A couple of more buttons released the crypreservation agents. A few more buttons and the activation of the recycling pump. Finally, it was done. The Emporer would sleep for a very, very long time. It would be a dead sleep.

The Eldest was now Emperor and business was at hand. As soon as it was done, he looked to Zirin, turned, and was gone. His first duty was the State of the Empire address followed by official reception of the Credonian President. It would be a long day.

After everything was done, Dr. Zirin took his leave of the Emperor family and retreated to his laboratory. He sat at his desk, alone and quiet for a long time. Eventually, he sighed and reached for the picture frame on his desk. It was taken only 6 month ago on their vacation. His wife and daughter looked happy and content. He was also happy and content. At the time, he couldn't remember being more alive in all his life.

http://www.med.osaka-u.ac.jp/pub/general/image/yoshi/vr/image_files/brain.gif

He placed the frame back down on the desk and went to the imaging screen. A few taps on the keyboard and the screen was alive and lit the room in a hazy blue light. A few more taps and he had the image he was looking for. It was a 3D reconstruction of a brain. Near the limbic brainstem, the central regulatory region of involuntary bodily function, there was a large tumor. It had grown remarkably fast in the last few months and was extremely malignant and invasive. He stared at it for a while. What a horrid thing he thought -- totally inoperable, totally unresponsive to all chemo- and radio-therapy, totally unreactive to even the most powerful investigational agents known. Even to his extremely advanced biotechnology expertise this was a monster and he had nothing with which to stop it. In the end, it would run its course and take its host to the grave. The only solution was to cryopreserve the host until a time came when the tumor could be destroyed unequivocably.

The MMI national press corp assemble for a major news conference with Dr. Zirin, pictured on a large projection display. During the interview, Dr. Zirin explains the condition of the former Emperor as well as their justification of their actions under the circumstances. He answers a number of questions and then introduces the former Emperor's eldest son, and now new acting Emporer of MMI, Saudakus the Ninth for his first State of the Empire address. He is dressed in the traditional black MMI Saudakus family ceremonial robes and wearing black sunglasses.

Loud auplause ........... Saudakus speaks ....

"Thank you. It affords me pleasure to tender my friendly greetings to all of you on this occasion. However, I derive no pleasure for the circumstances for which I stand before you today. As Dr. Zirin explained to you, my father rests peacefully at the edge of death. He was at his end and our decision was a difficult one. We hope yet to save him one day in the future. Until then, let us all fulfill his destiny and the destiny of our country and beloved citizens of MMI.

The task appointed to me is an honor of tremendous magnitude. I stand humbly before you today with the hope that I may fill my fathers shoes and all the hopes and desires of the country. In communicating with you for the first time it is to me a source of unfeigned satisfaction, calling for mutual gratulation and devout thanks to a benign Providence, that we are at peace with all man-kind, and that our country exhibits the most cheering evidence of general welfare and progressive improvement. Turning our eyes to other nations, our great desire is to see our brethren of the human race secured in the blessings enjoyed by ourselves, and advancing in knowledge, in freedom, and in social happiness.

Today, the state of our Empire could not be better, yet we still seek improvement. Our national coffers are filled and with a GDP in excess of 20 trillion our economic state looks bright. Our beloved nation clings to the divine belief of individual enlightenment and freedom which is aligned to personal industry and the freedom of ambition. I shall do nothing to infringe upon those freedoms except in states of strife and negotiation. In short, we shall keep the motions rolling ever forward and our nation will enjoy the strengths reaped beyond.

Our foreign relations, although in their general character pacific and friendly, present subjects of difference between us and other powers of deep interest as well to the country at large as to many of our citizens. To effect an adjustment of these shall continue to be the object of my earnest endeavors, and not withstanding the difficulties of the task, I do not allow myself to apprehend unfavorable results. Blessed as our country is with everything which constitutes national strength, she is fully adequate to the maintenance of all her interests. And in that respect, we are also blessed in the divine friendship of the multitude alliance of friendly brethren in the AIS.

In discharging the responsible trust confided to the Executive in this respect it is my settled purpose to ask nothing that is not clearly right and to submit to nothing that is wrong; and I flatter myself that, supported by the other branches of the Government and by the intelligence and patriotism of the people, we shall be able, under the protection of Providence, to cause all our just rights to be respected.

I now commend you, fellow citizens, to my guidance, with a full reliance on merciful Providence for the maintenance of our free institutions, and with an earnest supplication that whatever errors it may be my lot to commit in discharging the arduous duties which have devolved on me will find a remedy in the harmony and wisdom of your counsels. STRENGTH IN SAUDAKUS, STRENGTH IN UNITY, STRENGTH IN MMI!!"

Huge ovations and cheers overtake the crowd.
