LRRSF announces fleet refit (Warning, large pics)

The LRRSF has re-evaluated the frigate and its place in the "modern fleet" of highly mobile, relatively freely-roaming cruisers. While a cruiser or battlecarrier can take care of itself very well alone, the large clouds of frigates accompanying the LRRSF deepspace fleet would have to be stored somewhere, since they are primarily escort and specialty ships.

The LRRSF, in order to better allow frigates to cope with an LRRSF mission centered more on small groups of 2-6 ships for science and patrol missions, as opposed to mass combat missions, has developed a new class of frigate.

Seen here with a pair of corvettes, the Dire Straits class frigate is the LRRSF's newest ship type.

It is powered by a destroyer engine, and measures 220 meters from tip to tail, 35 meters beam. It can carry 4 corvettes in its ship bay, or eight fighters. It is crewed by 50.

The DS is equipped with a fully stocked science suite, as well as repair systems and repair bots. The DS is well-armored and well-shielded. It carries 15 ion cannons, 20 PD nodes, two torpedo bays, and 5 plasma cannons. It is also equipped with 10 ion-cannon equipped drones, which can be used for a multitude of purposes.

The DS will replace all current LRRSF frigates, so around 10,000 will be built. They will be made in several different designs, for variety of course.

With these new ships, the LRRSF can expand its scientific, trade, and mapping capability, and also enhance its combat capability with a new class of more powerful warships.

A word on LRRSF doctrine:

The earth fleets hang out around eachother in large congregations, and stay with their fellow fleet ships. The roving fleets, however (commanded by Admiral Ix) are used for the odd task. The largest permanent group is the 12-ship formation of Admiral Ix's command group, and the other ships of the roving fleets, in the event of combat, are called into group. This approach has several major advantages and disadvantages:

The LRRSF can be in many places at once, to conduct raids and light combat operations, and is very hard to find. While the earth fleets defend LRR's planetary self, the roving fleet can disappear completely from enemy detection.

However, the roving fleets can only undertake supporting roles in major battles unless called into formation, which takes several days.

If you are interested in the Dire Straits class utility frigate, do not hesitate to contact me about it.

OCC: I wouldn't mind using that pic for battlecruiser or something. It already has the "HEY! Lets stick the bridge on a giant exposed tower!" design so loved by Skeelzanian scientists.

IC: The Imperial Principality of Skeelzania congradualtes the LRRSF on the succesful development of their newest vessel, which is a splendid design indeed. While the ship is on the small side, no doubt it will perform its tasks admirably.

OOC: Homeworld 2 concept art. That ship never made it. None of those did.

OCC: I thought it had similar markings, as well as the picture being in the same style. Wonder why they didn't use it, IMHO it looks alot better than the flying shoe-horn of a BC that is in the game.

Concept art is generally a goldmine of new and awesome ships from games that they didn't put in.

Yeah, they really should have put a lot of those concept ships in, but I think the ones they have are pretty good. I mean, the Hiigarans have always been somewhat spartan and un-lavish in their ship designs, while their enemies have been more extravagant.

I found the pic while scrounging through the HW2 concept art section in the image archive on HW shipyards.

Great games, but I haven't played them in a while. My current computer doesn't run HW2, however. I got it like the day it was released, too.

I would have used more HW2 concept art, but I think i've squeezed all the usefullness out of it. I mean, some of those ships are just not what I am looking for. They're mostly of a conventional, end-end, long, flat design, while LRRSF battlecruisers and bigger are cylindrical, saucerlike shapes which are really only evident in Bentusi designs, which the LRRSF has already fully ripped off. (Frederick Douglass class BC, and Baba O'Riley class Dreadnaught are both variations on the Bentusi tradeship).

If I really hunted around, I could probably find some better pics for my other ships.
