searching for realistic RP of conflicts

OOC:

ladies and gentlemen,

it is heart-warming to see the fervor with which some nationstates are RPing conflict and international intrigue. as an avid wargamer and old school RPGamer, it is nice to see the interest in such things is well and alive in 2004.

however, i cannot find a realistic representation of conflict.

i look over the various posts of civil wars, open wars and threats of invasion and i personally cannot RP when people are talking about million man armies deployed in hours within the declaration of support for one side. i cannot see how 5 thousand fighter aircraft can be sent into combat at the drop of a hat and made to wage war for a rebel side that probably has not enough runway space for a tenth of those 'allied' aircraft. i cannot reconcile how a nation can have, support and deploy entire fleets of capital ships and thousands of carrier aircraft just to enforce a naval blockade.... etc.... etc....

yet these examples of the expression human imagination are fine... though they jog the mind and give us a picture of the people who are sitting in front of their monitors pushing the buttons for their armies with million man rapid deployment forces. live and let live, i say and let the million man RDF's slug it out with the stealth-capable all-weather kelvar encrusted laser-totting bio-engineered uber-menschs of our nationstates world. they are having fun, and i guess that is more the point.

i am personally searching though for a group of nations who are willing to RP a closer representation of conflict. i admittedly have a goofy little country of 83 million bar-coded individuals, but as supreme dictator i wish to take them into harm's way more often and i guess that's my prerogative.

so if anyone out there wants a breath of fresh air and RPing that would make tom clancy, larry bond, javier solana and frederick forsythe happy, drop me a telegram of two and let's get this show on the road.

You just haven't been looking hard enough. Granted that a lot of RPs are poorly written, there are some good ones.

The Desolation of Wolfish thread was pretty well written until it collapsed due to Wolfish's decision to abandon NS. The Ruhr/California & Alaska war was getting started nicely until it, too, collapsed. There have been others.

Going back into the depths of the past, you'll find several well-done war RPs, as well as metric buttloads of horrible ones. Some are well-written, but poorly executed. Like this one:

Have a look at this thread:

It's the Invasion of Gabon, and has the distinction of being one of the best RPs I've taken part in here on NS... no Million Man Armies, no Nukes, just a Vietnam-style war that got horribly out of control.

In fact, all the RPs involving the African Commonwealth, Lusaka, United Elias, and, I daresay, myself have been of excellent quality...
