Former Royal Family seeking monarchist home

Non-Government Broadcast: To all Monarchies

We, Thurso II, King of Thrace, have tired of the oppressive, pro-Catholic Republic which has usurped the Trent and Thordeyen Dynasties' right to govern for nearly a century. We seek a home for our close family and ourselves, ideally one which promotes royalist values and will defend our case against the current, crypto-Communist régime installed in the Thracian capital.

Our transports are briefed to depart the country as quickly as possible. We shall have ample means to support ourselves, once we access our international bank accounts, and we shall prove to be a valuable ally after we have regained what is ours by divine right.

Her Majesty's Tagrian Government graciously extend full protection and rights to the Thracian Royal Family until such time they return. Queen Anne II graciously permits the Royal Family to use her summer home in the country with full rights as citizens and diplomats in their own rights.

HM Tagrian Government also went on to say that it will actively support the restoration of the family back to their rightful place as Head of State. The Government has also extended privileges of the Treasury to the Thracian Royal Family for the duration of their stay.

The Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire prides itself on its two thousand years of royal rule. The Citizens of the Grand Duchy have gone those two millenia without once even thinking of overturning the royalist order. As a strictly laisez faire capitalist nation with an extremely strong democratic tradition, We feel We will be able to stand with you against the current crypto-Communist régime.

Grand Duke Reginald Leopold I would be more honored to make the Roosevelt Palace outside of Hamptonshire City your official residence for as long as you would grace us with your presence.

OOC: Thrace-Tailteann's government is, of course, very democratic and fairly tolerant. The King is just an extreme right-winger in the true sense of the word, as well as a big fan of rhetoric and hyperbole.

A junior officer in the Royal Guard sent a coded message to Hamptonshire, in the hope that the Government's ARGUS surveillance system would not hear the broadcast, let alone be able to decipher it:

"Residency offer accepted. Flying to H-shire now. Perhaps talks between GD and HM?"

The officer shut her laptop and boarded the ATH-3 jet. Tomorrow, a new home. After that, who knew?

OOC: The royals in general just want to see a Monarchy instead of a Republic. Thurso II in particular is not a great admirer for democracy, even though his "Reform - The Monarchist Party" group sits in the House of Deputies. But more about his politics in the RP.

IC:

Unknown to the group which had just landed outside Hamptonshire City, Hamptonshire's government had its own information about Thurso Thordeyen, the man who would be King:

Dossier on Thurso II

Summary: Strong - often extreme - admirer of country, religion, and traditional values.

Born nearly fifty years ago to the family of 'King' Bjorn II, Thurso grew in a time of great social restructuring. Swathes of land and mines, which were once owned by his Thordeyen dynasty, had been nationalised by the Catholic Socialist Party's government just before Thurso's birth. The sight of the poor, mainly Catholic peasantry owning former royal land created strong emotions in Bjorn's Thrace-Lutheran household. Thurso's childhood was one of national pride for Lutheran Thrace, not the unified country of Thrace-Tailteann.

When Bjorn II died - at the hands of government agents, his son alleges - Thurso claimed the title of King as his father's only son. With the title came the position of the Reform Party's general secretary, giving him great control over party policies. Thurso changed the party from being a niche monarchist group to a Thrace nationalist, strongly pro-market party. At the time, it was Thrace-Tailteann's most right-wing party, campaigning for much lower taxes and reduced government bureaucracy. Its popularity shot from 3% to 14% in three years, before falling to <1% nowadays....

... Current analysis suggests that Thurso II, if made King, would push for changes in the country's legislative system to benefit the head of state, i.e. himself. His free-market loyalties have strengthened over time, while his nationalism and support for Thrace-Lutheranism have not yet peaked. If monarchy were restored in Thrace-Tailteann and Thurso II crowned King, the chances of his State remaining a democracy are hard to tell. The coronation of Gordius IV, his slightly more tolerant son and heir, would more likely keep Thrace-Tailteann democratic while restoring proper leadership to its people...

Ignorant of all this knowledge being in the hands of their hosts, Thurso, Gordius and their guards entered the Grand Duke's palace, and waited to be presented to Reginald Leopold himself.

Hampton Palace, Official Residence of the Grand Duke

The Grand Duke sat in his office reading the Dossier on Thurso Thordeyen collected by the Ministry of Intelligence. It was another tough spot the Grand Duke has been forced into. Thankfully, however this time He saw a way out of it.

"General Lowell (Minister of Intelligence), what is you assessment of the situation?" the Grand Duke asked as he leaned back in his chair.

"Sir," the General replied while still standing at attention, "Personally, I think Thurso II has some very definite possiblities for the future of Thrace-Tailteann. However, as the report indicates Thurso is fairly weak in the area of democratic governance."

"Your Royal Highness, I would have to agree," Foreign Minister Lord Easton says from his chair in front of the Grand Duke's desk, "Thurso's pro-market and anti-bureaucracy ideals are most beneficial, but his tendency for Thrace nationalism and his anti-democratic leanings are a cause for worry."

Just as Lord Easton finished speaking the Grand Duke's personal secretary come walking in. "Your Royal Highness, His Majesty Thurso II, Gordius IV, and their guards have entered the Palace itself."

"Show them in." the Grand Duke says as he stands up. The secretary leaves the room and closes the door. "We have a few more minutes before Thurso and his company arrive. What is the consensus gentlemen?"

Lord Easton looks to General Lowell, who then gives a slight head nod. Lord Easton then turns to Defense Minister Sir Walter Melville who until this time has silently been sitting on one of the couches in the room.

Sir Walter stands to prepare to welcome Thurso while turning to the Grand Duke, "Your Highness, the Ministry of Defense is in agreement with the Foriegn Ministry and the Ministry of Intelligence. We must work with Thurso to restore the monarchy, but we have to get Gordius on the throne to preserve democracy."

"That shouldn't be too hard now, shouldn't it? Grand Duke Reginald Leopold I says, with a great measure of scarasm, as he and his three Cabinet members gather before the door to the Grand Duke's Office. All four men stand tall and straight await for the door to open and HM Thurso II to step through.

The visitor from a foreign country thanked the doorman. "Excellent, my good man. Now, shall we enter?" Thurso's words to the entourage were, of course, a command rather than a request.

The office was much smaller than Gordius had imagined it. Thurso was less surprised, having spent thirty years in politics, and knowing that governing reality was much more dreary than state ceremony.

"His Most Reverend Majesty, Thurso," the man who had opened the door declared. HMRM stepped forward.

"My Grand Duke, I am not accustomed to your nation's etiquette. I shall say only that my son and I are at your service.

"We have travelled a distance to meet your Royal Highness. I am confident that our journey will be bountiful to both our peoples.

"I thank you most heartily for accepting myself and my family at this short notice. Truly, your graciousness merits you the traditional ducal title; your grace is at least as magnificent as your highness. I needed to leave because of the increasing negative attitude towards my Reform Party. We had protested against an unjust war on a newly-liberated nation which embraced market ideals. In return, the Government described us as rioters. I realised my life was in danger, and that the Government itself could try to do to me what they did to... But history is past us.

"I know that your Royal Highness will support my family after our family takes its place at the head of our people. Indeed, we shall prove a great ally to Hamptonshire. But I must ask a question which creates concern in my heart, and I do not demand an answer immediately from your Royal Highness: Will your support be greater than words?"

----------------------

... Among the causes of the Reform Party's sharp drop in popularity was a bloody riot involving Reform members and supporters of the New Left Alliance party. Dozens of people from both sides died. The riot was caused by two demonstrations meeting in the capital, namely Reform's protest against the invasion of Militanar against a pro-market military government and the NLA's protest against Thracian-Credonian relations...

In Chambersland Estate, home of the Republican Security Service, the heart of the ARGUS surveillance system beats and its ears listen. Although it knew the Thordeyen family had left the country, it could not figure out their destination, or why they had left. Security officials engaged in some diplomatic wrangling with a few minor states to trace the family's path towards Hamptonshire. Thrace-Tailteann sent out its first diplomatic mission to Hamptonshire, and it neared Hamptonshire airspace less than forty hours after Thurso's departure, in the hope of addressing "this latest enigma".

The Grand Duke and his senior Cabinet Officers greeted HMRM Thurso II and Gordius in the standard mannor in which a foreign Head of State is greeted.

"Your Most Reverend Majesty, We are honored by your presence and by your choice of Hamptonshire for your refuge. We are planning a State Diner tonight as a reception for you and tomorrow, Your Majesty, you shall address the Royal Senate." the Grand Duke said with a bow.

"Your Most Reverend Majesty," Lord Easton says while bowing, "while we talk here, the Royal Household Directorate will give your aides all the information on Roosevelt Palace. Also, if you could sign this document...it acknowledges that you have accepted Diplomatic Asylum in the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire. Just a formality, but this document will afford you the full protection of the Grand Duchy."

"Your Majesty, Our support will be much greater than words. The full diplomatic resources of the Foreign Ministry, the economic resources of the Treasury Department, and if need be the Royal Armed Forces are all ready to back up our words and our committment to the restoration of proper government in Your nation." the Grand Duke says while motioning to the couch. "We have much more to discuss..."

----------------------

The Royal Intelligence Directorate was gaining information from allied governments and field agents that Thrace-Tailteann had traced the Royal Family to Hamptonshire. The Foreign Ministry was contacted as Thrace-Tailteann requested a diplomatic mission be sent to Hamptonshire City.

----------------------

"This is Air Defense Command to Thrace-Tailteann Diplomatic Plane. Please redirect to Seaburg International Airport. You will then disembark and board a Royal Air Force transport to Hamptonshire City International Airport.

That is all"

----------------------

Prime Minister Louis Cessar had just returned from a state visit to Majesto when the Foreign Ministry informed him of the arrival of Thrace-Tailteann diplomats. At the order of the Grand Duke, the Prime Minister was to meet with the diplomats, show them the Diplomatic District and a few government buildings.

Thurso knew when to speak and when to be silent, and for the moment he stayed silent. He simply took a pen out of his breast pocket, read the asylum document, and signed it. "This gives protection to my entire household?"

"Indeed."

"Very well. I greatly admire the palace of your Royal Highness; it is a fitting place for men to talk. I am certain that the residence you have found for us will be as comfortable and will put my household at as much ease. Now, to other matters. We will be honoured to answer any questions your Royal Highness or your party wishes to put to us."

A Diplomatic TA-335 Jet.

"Dammit!"

"What?" The Head of Mission was used to bad surprises in his job. Renowned throughout the Department for his skills at crisis resolution, Michael Morgan always seemed to be keeping Thrace-Tailteann either out of wars or in trade deals.

"Foreigners won't let us land in H-shire City. We're being sent four hundred Ks away." The Comms Officer was good, and he had seen active service in the military before his move into the civilian public service.

"Are they paranoid or something? ... Yes, they are. I guess we should have checked with them first. People!" he shouted to the four others on the aeroplane, diplomats all. "We're staying in the air for a while! H-shire Air Force tells us to land in the south-east. We don't have weapons, so we're not going to disobey."

"Did you say four hundred kilometres?" asked Estelle Smith, the mission's political expert. "I don't know if I can stand flying in this thing for four more minutes."

"No way! We're going to be flying a lot further than that. We're staying out of their airspace until we get near Seaburg, just in case they get tetchy, so it'll be a few more hours until we hit terra firma."

----------------------

Despite all signs to the contrary, the two air journeys went without incident. By the time they landed in Hamptonshire City, Michael was ready for work. "I recognise that man. Isn't he the Prime Minister?"

"Prime Minister Louis Cessar," said Estella. "Nationalist Union guy, I think. Anyway, we don't really care about their politics, we just need to know what our man is doing-"

"- Prime Minister! I am delighted to meet you. You have the best wishes of our country..." It was the usual spiel given to foreign higher-ups, but it always seemed to impress. Thank God they shared a common language. There was enough room for misunderstandings without having translators in the mix.

Three limousines waited outside the airport; seeing the guards in each vehicle confirmed the mission's suspicions that this country was security-obsessed. The two senior people on the mission entered a limousine with Cessar, and the cars sped away on the grand tour of Hamptonshire City. As usual, there would be more talking than sight-seeing. That suited Morgan and Smith; there were many questions they wanted to ask, though at root there was only one.

"Roosevelt Palace is located in the Hans Frederick V Royal Park, 35 miles outside of Hamptonshire City. The Palace is located on Taft Cliff, in the heart of the Western Forest. The 5,000 foot vertical drop provides enchanced secuirty, a spectacular view, and the highest waterfall in the entire Grand Duchy." Lord Easton says.

"Your Majesty," Sir Walter reverently says, "What are your thoughts on your return to power. How do you plan to reinstate the monarchy?"

----------------------

Prime Minister Cessar sat with Michael Morgan and Estelle Smith in his armored limousine.

"If you don't mind me saying, I over heard you saying I was part of the Natioalist Union Party. I'm not. The position of Prime Minister is appointed be the Grand Duke to be a non-political Head of Government. I'm actually a registered member of the Central Coaltion." the Prime Minister says to the two diplomats.

They don't quite do their homework do they? While they might not have the best information on us, they are still diplomats and as I like to say 'Diplomats, like bears, are to be respected, feared, and hunted the Prime Minister thinks to himself with a little chuckle.

"We are now headed toward Embassy Row where dozens of Foriegn Embassies are located. As you may have noticed, Hamptonshire City is divided into 8 different Districts. We find it easier to provide security that way. As you also notice, all of our light rail systems are above ground and armored, yet again security. The Bus System also operates armored buses that have bomb-detecting units installed. As you see we take the security of our Homeland very seriously, and the security of the Hamptonshire City Captial District even more so. Over the last two decades, the Government has spent $2.5 trillion dollars improving Captial security in addition to the $2.5 trillion spent on construction of the 'Project Dunkirk' Bunkers..."

Prime Minister Cessar continues to recite the same facts he has told to countless other diplomats and visiting government officials. Over the years he has become quite adept at 'handling' foreign diplomats.
Thrace-Tailteann

Thurso laughed. "We have a saying in Thrace, my friends: 'Heaven helps those who help themselves'. If that were true, God ought to have smiled on me a lot more that He seems to have done recently.

"I don't take you people for fools. You are surely aware of my political history. You know about my agitation for a free Thrace, ruled by the people, led by God's appointee. Is that not enough?"

The King's son spoke for the first time. The words were mature, but you could still tell from his voice that he was barely in his twenties. "In fairness to these men, they want to know what we will do for them now. Politics is of little use to them against the Bureaucratic Republic. We can trust these men."

"Indeed. You are in our care, Your Majesty."

Thurso hesitated, then said, "We have a militia in Thrace-Tailteann. Seventy thousand armed men, many of them in the Army, ready to attack on my command. Unfortunately, they cannot stand against the full Army if it comes to conflict, but they carry out bank robberies, raids on police stations, things like that. Alternatively, they can bring down the Government's first line of national defence around the coast. We have more than enough men to destroy their SAM air defences. I believe we could also take down most of the Civil Defence stations.

"Money for the Liberty Militia is not an object. We have enough weapons to last for ten years, hidden in bunkers around the country. Our income from missions lets us buy weapons from those nations who agree with our aims - secretly, of course; the Government has a very conservative attitude towards firearms, in that it wants to ban them as far as possible." Thurso laughed. "Whereas we believe liberty is the best state of affairs for mankind."

"But the hour is becoming late! Time is a cruel master. Shall my son and I travel to our residence, or shall we head to the Royal Senate straight away?"

----------------------

When they had seen most of the Diplomatic District, and Smith had chosen an ideal place for a future permanent mission to Hamptonshire, Morgan started to approach serious matters.

"Prime Minister, I think it is fair to warn you that we know about Thurso Thordeyen's migration to Hamptonshire."

Cessar nodded.

"We must also warn you that Mr Thordeyen is a target for terrorist groups in our own country. As you know, he is a fervent nationalist for that part of our nation we call Thrace. There are, however, Tailteann nationalists as well - the TLF. The man who would have been King of Thrace is believed to be among their top five targets. When he is in your country, you need to keep a security watch for members of the TLF.

"Whether Mr Thordeyen knows it or not, he has been under police protection for most of his life. Since his father died, or should I say probably killed, we haven't taken any chances. You see, Mr Thordeyen's Reform Party in Thrace-Tailteann has... some fascist leanings. If their relatively moderate leader were taken out of the picture, the extremists could take control and begin a new wave of terror across our country. We suffered mass terrorism by the TLF forty years ago. We don't want to face those times again.

"The politics of this affair is tangled. Terrorism always seems to result in strange alliances being formed. Mr Thordeyen has a Liberty Militia under the command of his Reform Party or himself - we think they have only about fifty thousand members. It makes more sense for us to keep a small terrorist group going, under a leader who keeps it inactive, than declare a long, costly 'war on terror' which spurs on the militia towards a bombing campaign. All the same, we would prefer if there was an end to the Liberty Militia's 'war of liberation'. We would appreciate your country's help in this matter."

----------------------

On a trusted flight into Seaburg International Airport, a married couple and four single men prepare their papers for inspection. They sit as five separate units on the aeroplane. According to their passports, they come from three different nations, and other than the couple, none live in the same city. One of the single men carries medical equipment and an International Medic's Card; another has vintage wine in his rucksack; the other two are apparently travelling light, with only briefcases, and bear Thrace-Tailteann passports. The married couple have travel books, an itinerary, and air tickets to cities around the world. As the aeroplane lands, all six travellers prepare to board a connecting flight to Hamptonshire City.

"We also believe in freedom and liberty, as long as you are a natural born citizen of the Grand Duchy." the Grand Duke says while standing by the door.

"We shall discuss strategy tomorrow when you meet the Royal Senate. You will have a meeting with the Royal Congression leadership, the Cabinet, the Privy Council, and the Joint High Command Council." Lord Easton says as he pours himself a drink.

"The Royal Senate will wait for tomorrow. Tonight, Your Majesty, you and your son shall stay with me here in Hampton Palace as my guests.
The final preparations on Roosevelt Palace are being completed. I have ordered a full Royal Police Batallion and four Royal Army Companies to deploy around Roosevelt Palace. It will be as secure for you as it is for me when I live there." the Grand Duke says as he leads the men into the hallway.

----------------------

"You," Prime Minister Cessar says to the two diplomats, "can rest assured Mr. Thordeyen is under the strictest security. Two thousand extremely well trained and very heavily armed men and women of the Royal Armed Forces have be designated specifically to guard Mr. Thordeyen and his son. The location where he is being held at is in a No-Fly Zone and is less than ten minutes by helicopter from one of our largest military bases. In addition Mr. Thordeyen will never be more than minutes from a Dunkirk Bunker entrance area."

"The Grand Duchy is dedicated to stopping terror in all its forms. As a nation scarred by terrorism, we will not stand by while it ravages another freedom loving democracy. You have the guarantee of this Government that the Liberty Militia's War of Liberation will soon be over."

"We are at your command, your Majesty." Thurso and Gordius separated from their guards, who were allowed leave for a drink with some off-duty Palace guards. As the royals wended their way up the corridor, Thurso held the Merit of Companion medal, which he planned to award Reginald Leopold before the Royal Senate. Blood may be thicker than water, but gold can outlast both.

----------------------

Michael Morgan thought about the PM's reply. Well, that's a bloody great help. Does he mean to bury the Liberty Militia or praise it? Damned foreigners and their ruses. I hope the others are sticking to working out terms of trade.

"Prime Minister, we would appreciate it if you could arrange a meeting between ourselves and Mr Thordeyen. We must ensure that our citizens abroad are being treated well, you see. A trilateral meeting between our delegation, your Government and Mr Thordeyen would allay whatever fears our Cabinet has for the safety of his family."

As the Grand Duke and his guests were retiring in Hampton Palace, the Ducal Palace Complex. The Hamptonshire City Military Command Center was locking down the city. The Government District is being sealed off in preparation for tomorrow's address to the Royal Senate, the Royal District and all its huge parks are being virtually emptied, and the Ducal Palace Complex is closing even more tightly up.

After seeing Thurso and his son to their rooms, the Grand Duke walks over to the Security Center in the basement of the Palace. He steps into the room to talk to the Director of Grand Ducal Security about a special mission for the vaunted, and sometimes feared, Omega Guards.

----------------------

As the Prime Minister and his two Thrace-Tailteann guests are sitting in the Prime Minister's House in the Government District of Hamptonshire City, Foreign Minister Lord Easton is leaving Hampton Palace to meet join the meeting currently going on.

"Mr. Morgan, I will relay your request to the Foreign Ministry. While we more than understand you desire to ensure the safety of Mr. Thordeyen, you must understand that he is a guest in our nation. We can only set up the meeting if he agrees."

"Now I don't only have to defend the entire Captial City, but I also need to keep a bunch of foreigners safe. Inform the Commandant of the Royal Guards that I want a meeting within him at 05:00 tomorrow." McNamara says to his Chief of Staff.

This man in the corner is Thurso II, third King of the dynasty of Thordeyen, which became the royal line a decade after the Republic of Thrace-Tailteann was founded. He has stayed awake all night, partly due to an inability to sleep in an unusual bed, partly because of his increasing paranoia. He has written a speech to be delivered before the Royal Senate, in which he thanks Hamptonshire for its generosity and rouses its people against the Republic. He continues to draft and re-draft it until long after the sun has set, and for hours he sleeps with his head resting on the elegant room's desk.

----------------------

'Press attaché' GV Barnson collected newspapers for the mission's late-night conference, ranging from the orthodox to the obscene. Journalists were treating Thordeyen as an minor oddity - not the kind of person who visits the country every day, but nothing to get editors too agitated. A two-page Leftist newsletter reported that Thordeyen was planning an address to the Senate, and urged its readers to give him "a dictator's welcome". In a restaurant, he passes this and other cut-out articles around the table.

Michael Morgan receives the newsletter. "So, Gerry, do you think we should go and welcome him as well?"

"It will be harder than you think, Michael. You've seen how distrustful these people are of diplomats - how do you think they're going to like us accosting Thordeyen? And that's a best-case scenario. Realistically, there's no way we'll get close to the Senate building. I can hear the police helicopters as we speak."

"What you're saying is, we're depending on the goodwill of the H-shire government to let us see Thordeyen."

"Yes."

"Damn. Let's hope we don't do anything to annoy them."

The diplomats head for their hotel rooms. In the morning, they will see what they can do to confront Thordeyen. Until then, the city sleeps.

"Colonel Hayes," Grand Duke Reginald Leopold says to the Director of Grand Ducal Security, "the security of Thurso and his son are very important. Not only would their death, injuy, or embarassment hurt their cause but it would be personally damaging to me."

"Yes, sir." Colonel Hayes responded.

"That's why I want four Omega Guards, two for Thurso and two for the son, around our guests at all times. Make them butlers, maids, or errand boys for all I care. I don't want our two guests to be more than twelve feet away from an Omega Guard at any time." the Grand Duke says in a quited tone.

"I'll have to bring up some Omega Guards from standby status, but they will be ready by morning."

"Excellent...but no one else can know of this. You know that reaction this would have in the Royal Senate. Using Omega Guards, my personal guards, to protect a foreigner would cause the Central Coalition to lose the next election for sure."

"Yes, Your Royal Highness."

"Remember Hayes, you are above the law, you are beyond the law but act with extreme care and discretion. I don't want a war starting because of this." the Grand Duke says as shuts the door behind him.

----------------------

"Patrick," Prime Minister Cessar address Foreign Minister Lord Easton, "the Thrace-Tailteann delegation has requested a meeting between themselves and Thordeyen. I told them I had to 'relay the request to the Foreign Ministry'." he finishes saying with a light laugh.

"I'll bring up the possibility of a meeting to Thurso tomorrow morning. It will have to be his decision. Of course we will have to closely monitor the situation." Lord Easton says with a wink as he eats a small sandwich.

Louis reclines back in his chair, raises his arms behind his head and says, "Hey Patrick, can you imagine tomorrow? I can't wait to see the look on Allenby's face, and Gov. Fredericks! he finishes while erupting in loud laughter.

"Allenby, he won't like our involvement that's for sure.' Lord Easton says with a wink, "and you know Fredericks and his view of royalty..."

"Yeah. He'll make a fuss about our assistance and the Republic Party will raise hell. Thankfully, we can count on the People's Coalition to bail us out on this one." Cessar says while taking a small sandwich off a plater.

Thurso wakes from his few hours of sleep sleep fully rested. He freshens himself and changes clothes from those he wore for twenty-four hours. Then he practises his delivery on the address he wrote as he waits by the door, wanting to impress upon the Senate the urgency and sheer correctness of his cause. At last, a man knocks.

"Sir?"

"Mmm?"

"You are wanted, sir."

Thurso rises and follows the man to meet his hosts once more.

Hotel Rex Terris, 9:05 am

Over breakfast, Michael says what they have realised since the day before. "We're getting nothing done. Nothing. If there were an award for hubris, it'd have to go to us. Imagine thinking they'd let us meet the guy just because we're here, let alone give him back to us! Honestly..."

"We could still meet Thordeyen," noted Estelle. "Cessar said it himself."

"Well, I've dealt with politicians before. They say plenty. Gerry, any word on what our man in Hamptonshire is doing?"

"Nothing new. He's still going to the Senate, according to the Daily Worker. It looks like they've really fortified the place. Are they expecting mass riots or something?"

Michael thought for a moment. "If we listen to what he says in the Senate, we can find out whether it's worth our while to stay or not. Obviously, if he seeks political asylum, we're out of luck. If he's just here on a visit - which I doubt, seeing how reluctant the Government is to let us see him - or if he's conciliatory to us, we start working to get in contact with him... using necessary means."

"Sounds good," said Richard Boyce, an experienced military attaché. "Maybe there's a public gallery in the Senate? It's a long shot, but if they let one of us in, we can find out what's going on."

"Probably a bad idea. I think their goodwill is slowly running out. Now, perhaps they broadcast Senate proceedings like they do at home. Gerry, you check that out. It could be on any network, radio, TV, Internet... Use your receiver and decoder, if you have to."

"Sure thing. Anyway, I'm sure our friends in the Daily Worker will be reporting what he said tomorrow. Hell, it'll probably be in the mainstream press by that time."

"True! Tomorrow - today, if we're lucky - we'll know whether to move on or move out." Michael released the others to look around the city for a few hours. As he looked out the main door of the Rex Terris, he saw less government minders for his colleagues than there had been the day before. This visit must be a serious security op, he thought. Or was there something else? Surely a major incident would have been on the TV news that morning. Obviously, the Hamptonshire government preferred to be safe than sorry. And weren't they right?

The man and the woman with whom we were concerned earlier took their pre-booked rooms at the Hotel Rex Terris that afternoon.

As Thurso enters the room, the Grand Duke and the Foriegn Minister are there to greet him.

"Your Majesty, I have been told to convey to you a request from the 'government' of Thrace-Tailteann." Lord Easton says with a bow. "They wish to have a meeting with you. Of course they were informed that only you could decide to meet with the delegation."

"King Thurso," the Grand Duke interjects, "we can talk about this during the ride to the Royal Senate Chambers. I will say that whatever your decision is, I will stand by it.

On a seperate note, when we do reach the Royal Senate the President of the Royal Congress, Senator Bernard Allenby, will introduce you. In all probablity he will introduce you as 'The Honorable Thurso Thordeyen'. Don't think anything of it. The Nationalist Union Party has indicated that until the monarchy is restored, it will consider you a 'Royal without a Throne.' It's just a way for them to save face..." the Grand Duke continues as Thurso, his son, and the Grand Duke's party enter the armored transports for the trip to the Royal Congression Complex.

----------------------

In the Royal Senate Chamber Senator Bernard Allenby and Prime Minister Cessar are getting into another of their almost legendary "spirited" discussions.

"Allenby, would it be so much to ask for you to introduce him as..."

Senator Allenby cuts Cessar off "Personally, I don't have a problem doing so, but the Republic Party does. You'll have to vote you need for action. but unless you want the NURP Coalition to split, I'll introduce Thurso as I have planned."

"Alright, alright! You'd think a party that wishes to establish a constitutional monarchy wouldn't be against giving a King his due respec..." once again Prime Minister Cessar is cut off.

"Don't even start...

We must be civil now, this adress to the Royal Senate is going to be broadcast over the HNN as well a 'Capital Watch'. Allenby says as he straightens his suit.

"Very well, you should bring the Royal Senate to order now." Cessar says as he takes his seat in the second highest level of the President's Podium.

In the giant "War Room" of the Capital City Defense Command Post, Field General McNamara is finishing a meeting with the Commandants of the Royal Guards and the Royal Police.

"For the speech today, I've set up a perimeter here. 20,000 troops of the 9th and 803rd Royal Infantry are stationed to provide outer security with the 490th Royal Armored Division provided reserve power." McNamara says to the two Commandants while pointing to places on the map.

"As per standard operating procedures," General Edgar Benson, Commandant of the Royal Police says while pointing to the Royal Congression Complex, "all non-Citizens are being barred entrance to the entire Complex. I've also been in contact with local protestor groups and aside from a few dozen pro-Communist marchers, no disturbances are expected."

"My men have finished securing Roosevelt Palace," Commander-General Issacs, Commandant of the Royal Guards says to McNamara, "There are more than 7,500 boots on the ground directly assigned to protect the palace with another 3,000 men stationed for outer security. With all the sensors installed around there, if a beatle starts to dig a hole or if a moth farts, my men will know it."

"Excellent. It looks like we've got another tight operation here. Just to be sure, I want the Dunkirk entrances primed to the 'Ready Position'"

"Yes, sir." the two Commandants say in unison while giving a salute.

The convoy to the Royal Congress drove through empty streets, save for the odd armed guard.

"Is this usual procedure for visiting guests?" asked Gordius, in his personal car.

A guard laughed. "Only for the most important bigwigs, like your father."

"He's a good man."

"I know, I know. I'm not doubting it."

In his father's car, Thurso and Lord Easton had begun to concern themselves with matters of the Senate speech.

"I don't care how they address me. Even my grandfather Thurso was only called 'Sir', and he was the first of our line. Until my family are where we belong, I have no objection to being called 'honourable'. Even 'dishonourable' would be better than some of the things I've been called at home."

Easton said, "Your Majesty, on the matter of your home. The diplomats... Have you made a decision?"

Thurso thought. "How many of them are there?"

"Six. Though you don't have to meet with more than two or three of them."

"In truth, I wouldn't meet a single one. If they call me a racist and a terrorist, I'm going to return the favour."

Didn't he already say he had a militia? thought Easton.

"I'm sorry, but they gave me no solace back home, and it would be a sign of weakness to give in to them now. If this causes you any problems..."

"That's perfectly fine." It solved a few problems, anyway. They might be more eager to get out of the country if they knew their force was trying to push an immovable object.

They drove through the gates of the complex. "Is this the Senate? A fine place! Fit for your glorious nation!" Gradually, the cars came to a stop.

----------------------

Michael was in room 422, sending electronic mail to the Department of Defence and Foreign Affairs, when he heard a knock on his door.

"Michael? It's me, Gerry. Turn on Channel Four on your TV."

"My TV's broken."

"Oh, for goodness' sake. Come into my room, so."

On Gerry's television, they watched the Royal Senate prepare for the day's business and listened to political commentators, wondering how the day would progress.

"Great! Have they mentioned our man at all?"

"Just in passing. They're more concerned with some - wait! There's Bernard Appleby. He's a Senator, the President of Congress."

"Allenby, you mean. You've been watching too much television when you should have been studying your briefing. Anyway, he's beginning to talk..."

----------------------

"1-2-3-4! Kick the fascists out the door!" chanted the demonstration. They were just away from the police line, and much too far away from the Senate for anybody to hear even faint echoes in the silent streets around the Complex. Still, it was symbolic.

Under the chant, two of the protesters spoke as silently as they could. One was an old hand at picketing; the other was a foreigner, and apparently new at this business. But he was well connected, as the more experienced man knew from their talk the night before.

"So, do you want the medicine or not?" Even under the noise of agitators, it was best to talk in code, especially with military men nearby.

"I can't afford it. My children need to be fed, and it's not cheap."

"Well, how about I give you it as a favour, to be remembered?"

"I have a bad experience of being beholden to doctors," said the older man, but he took the vials anyway.

"You do have a man who can move that, don't you?"

"We have men everywhere."

"5-6-7-8! Bring some justice to this state!"

"If anyone buys this stuff, I'll be back to you, and I'll pay you for it."

"Trust me. We grow things in Thrace-Tailteann that would make the average junkie's eyes water. Take some yourself, if you don't believe me."

"Business and pleasure, my friend." They rejoined the chant.

In Gordius's car the guard and the prince continue their dialogue while they wait to enter the Complex.

"At any given time there are at least 400,000 armed troops in or around the Capital. Hamptonshire City is first and foremost a government center and has a civilian population of only a few hundred thousand.

"Do you have a problem with protestors or uprisings?" Gordius asks.

"The last major riot we had anywhere in the entire Grand Duchy was almost a hundred years ago. The Federal Government, and just about any other level of government, is very small and stays out of people's lives. With our prosperous economy and strong capitalist tradition, only 1.55% of the population are actually in favor of socalism or communism." the guard continues, "The reason the Captial is a fortress is because of the Soigacas Terrorist attacks during the earily reign of the Grand Duke. We can literally a dozen people a way from the complete loss of every member of the Federal Government. Since then, the entire Grand Duchy has become a Fortress in the Ocean."

----------------------

"I will relay your decision to the delegation immediately, Your Majesty." Lord Easton says as he orders an aide to find the diplomats and inform them of Thurso's decision.

"I will see you inside, I must take my seat now." Easton says as he bows and then departs to find his seat in the Chamber.

----------------------

"I'm am sorry that you could not address a Joint Session of the Royal Congress, but our law stipulates that only setting Heads of State or Government may address the entire Royal Congress." the Grand Duke said as he is standing by Thurso, waiting to enter the Royal Senate Chamber.

A Congressional aide hears the que in his earphone and opens up the large door just as Senator Allenby finishes saying "Fellow Senators, all rise and greet His Royal Highness, Grand Duke Reginald Leopold I." As the sentences finishes, the Grand Duke begins the walk into the Chamber shaking hands of the Royal Senators along the walkway.

Ascending to the top tier of the President's Podium, the Grand Duke sits on the grandly ornated platinum throne as he calls the Royal Senate to Special Order. "At this time We are calling the Royal Senate of the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire to a 'State of Special Order'. It would please the Crown if the Honorable Senator Bernard Allenby, President of the Royal Congress does at this time discharge himself of the Duties that We now as of him."

Senator Allenby rises from his seat next to the Prime Minister and begins his response, "It is with great honor and humility that I do now discharge myself of the Duties asked of my by His Royal Highness. I hereby call the Royal Senate to Order. I introduce to the Royal Senate the Honorable Thurso Thordeyen"

The 225 members of the Royal Senate all stand and begin to clap as Thurso enters the chamber to begin his address.

----------------------

3 miles from the Royal Congression Complex a few dozen pro-Communist protestors continued their almost perpetual protesting against the government.

"Alright everyone," a Royal Police Captian announced over a loudspeaker, "if you would all present your National ID card it would be most appreciated. We just need to check all of you against the profile of those that vandalized the HDC Reserach Facility in New Hannon. As always, if you don't have your card we have to match your DNA aganist the National Database and then you'll get a $50 infraction."

"PIGS! FASCISTS!" the protestors yell out.

"Hey, if we were fascists would we have granted you a Protestor Permit? Now please present your ID Cards." the Captian says while several Agents of the Ministery of Health and Domestic Security begin to enter the crowd.

"Amica," Thurso began in the traditional Thracian greeting. "The openness of your arms is as magnificent as that of your hearts. Truly, this is a country of welcomes.

"Not so the Republic. The Republic is a land of tyranny. The Republic is a land of dehumanisation. The Republic is a land of all equality and no fairness."

The rhetoric continued for some time. Thurso found time to condemn not only the Republic, but the poor, the Catholic Church, the Tailteann nationalists - all of whom he saw as the "true... but false" rulers of Thrace-Tailteann. In his conclusion, he got to the root of his argument:

"Your nation is a generous one. Yet I am a selfish man in many ways. I do not want only the love of your hearts. I want the power of your arms... and the wit of your minds to be used against opression.

"I accepted amnesty from your Cabinet yesterday, and I can say this in honesty; if your support is not with my side, I bear no grudge against you. Such a gesture as that you have already made for my family and me is more than I could have expected from any nation.

"Yet! If your support is with my side, you will have an ally for life. No, greater than a mere generation's worth of gratitude. Throughout the generations, my descendants will call you 'friend'.

"I had to leave my own country because it is now a country of hatred, of derision for the common man. Forced socialisation has been imposed from on high since before my birth, and at a certain time, the thinking man must choose to live, die, or fly from socialism. I have chosen flight. And I could have chosen no better destination. Thank you."

A standing ovation from much of the Senate. Thurso walks away, somewhat shaken by the unexpected applause.

----------------------

GV answered a telephone call during the address. "Hello?" Lord Easton's aide spoke. After the call, they discussed the news, and Michael made his decision.

"Alright. No good will come from our staying here any longer. When the others get back, tell them I booked a flight for tonight."

"Yep. Are you going out?"

"I thought I would... if there's still a minder out there who's not at that huge security op. We'd never do anything like that back home, that's for certain."

GV shrugged. "Well, we are in less of a habit of harbouring terrorists."

"You'd be surprised. Wait 'til you get to Iota clearance. Your eyes will be opened. Now I'm going shopping. Heaven knows the wife will expect a present from 'out foreign'."

----------------------

"Sir, why have you no National ID card?"

"FASCIST!" A foreigner. They could tell from the accent.

"We just need to check. You are authorised to protest, aren't you?"

"Officer?" asked a Ministry agent. "We've found a proscribed substance." Sure enough, the foreign agitator had dropped a vial of fuze. Though the container hadn't broken, some of the neuron-fusing drug had spilled on the ground.

The atmosphere became much more tense. "Alright, sir. We don't need any trouble. Just come with us." He was brought into a police car, and disappeared to public sight.

With the address over, the Grand Duke, Thurso, and their parties left the Royal Congressional Complex for a meeting with the Cabinet at Hampton Palace.

"I'm sorry of the pace of activities right now, but with all the news coverage about you the Government needs to have a plan together. The entire Cabinet and the Joint High Command Council are gathering at Hampton Place so that we may discuss the future in greater detail." the Grand Duke says while he and Thurso get back into their armored transports.

----------------------

With Thurso and the Grand Duke gone and the cameras turned off, the Royal Senate began a debate over Thurso and the issue of support.

"I find it insulting," Senator Williams, and Independent, said while addressing Senator Allenby, "that Thurso would insult the Catholic Church in a nation that is more than 60% Hamptonian Catholic. Are we to support a man who derides the religion of most Hamptonians?"

As Senator Williams finished, Senator Henry Flint stood up to address the Senate, "Fellow Senators, while the statements of Mr. Thordeyen may have been inflamatory, they are the pleas of a may desparate for change. The forced implimentation and continuation of any system upon any people is an outrage. Are we to stand by and do nothing while Thrace-Tailteann is under the yolk of oppression?"

"Would you have us interfere in the internal matters of the Thrace-Tailteann State? Would you have us send in an Army Group to install Mr. Thordeyen as King? Do you honestly believe the people of Thrace-Tailteann would accept a ruler that was placed into power by a foreign government? If you do, I must say you are more idiotic than I first believed." Senator Williams said to Flint.

"The Senator from Oltremare Province will refrain from personal insults. A fine of $50 will be placed upon you Senator Williams." Senator Allenby said while pounding his gavel. "Senator Flint, you may continue."

"Mr. President, I do not suggest that we invade Thrace-Tailteann, nor should we use the our full military might. The situation in Thrace-Tailteann is like building a sand castle; use too much force and it all comes crashing down, however use skill and patience and a new kingdom will arrise from a barren landscape..." Senator Flint, and the rest of the Royal Senate continue their debate in a very long session.

----------------------

Riding in his car Lord Easton's cell phone rang.

"Minister, the Thrace-Tailteann delegation is readying to leave the country. Do you have any further instructions?"

"Just give them the Standard Diplomatic Package; the rare Mountain Tulips, a signed letter from the Grand Duke, and the two silver chalices engraved with the Seal of the Grand Duchy. I'll inform the Grand Duke of our visitor's departure."

"Very good, your Lordship."

"Oh, and make sure that our guests are able to visit some of the high-end stores in the Diplomatic District. I'd hate for them to go away empty handed..." Lord Easton said as he erupted in laughter.

----------------------

"Now, will you please tell me what nation you are a citizen of?" the Royal Police Interrogator asked.

Nothing, absolute silence.

"Can we contact your home nation or your nation's embassy?" the Interrogator continued, but yet again the question was met with silence.

The foreigner sat in the Interrogation Room under an extremely powerful light that could very well double as a search light. The room, except for the Foreigner and the chair, was completely and perfectly dark.

"If you inform us of your country of origin, you may be afforded certain Rights." the Interrogator said.

Outside of the Interrogation room, a Senior Intelligence Agent of the Intelligence Ministry and an officer of the Colonial Security Division stood and talked quitely to each other. Both men came to the same conclusion, something is rotten in the state of Hamptonshire.
Thrace-Tailteann

Thurso and Gordius entered the same armoured car. With no Hamptonshire government officials in the vehicle but a guard and driver in the front seats, they were free to talk.

"What does the Grand Duke mean by 'a plan'?" asked the young man of his father.

"I have not got a clue. They aren't going to get us back home straight away. They'll be mainly talking about news management, short-term things like that." He paused. "You are also an important part of this. Remember that you have a duty to these people just as I do."

"Though I never expressed a desire to leave my home country?"

"We discussed that already. There was no hope for yourself or myself back home. If the security forces didn't kill us, it would have been the terrorists. Here, we have a future... a glorious future." His son was idealistic, he knew, but Thurso's long years of looking over his shoulder and seeing police officers everywhere he went had hardened his resolve in supporting individualism and freedoms. For the right people, of course.

----------------------

"Scum," muttered the captured man under his breath when the interrogator's backs were turned.

"What did you say?" asked one. No response from the detainee.

"You realise this means you have waived... certain rights."

No answer from the man. He knew he wouldn't willingly give these cops any answers. Perhaps they could force them out of him, if they were into harsh measures. Even if they weren't, and even if he was released, they would surely shadow him for the rest of his short time in Hamptonshire. Thanks to his own greed for drug profits, he had failed his cause.

----------------------

One of the other agents in Hamptonshire had been more successful, though. Just outside his hotel room in the Hotel Rex Terris, Richard Boyce, Thracian Foreign Service functionary for ten years, lay with a gun wound at the back of his head. Bleeding, dead. The silenced pistol was dropped in the empty corridor as the assassin returned the body to her own room. Had anyone seen her? She didn't care. She looked out the window of her fourth-floor room, and jumped from sheer terror of being discovered. When she hit a balcony near the ground, taking a minor injury to her left foot, she climbed down the rest of the way, went to another city block and took a taxi to Hamptonshire City International Airport.

----------------------

The others met in the hotel reception area. Estelle Smith walked in, laden down with bags, and met her four colleagues.

"That's five of us. Once we get the sixth, we can go." As often happened, GV had become quite tired of waiting.

"Strange," Estelle said. "Boyce left the District long before I did. Check his room."

Before Michael could rise from his seat, a doctor and armed guard approached him.

"Mr Morgan? Please, come with us." Uncertain of what was happening, he did. And then, he saw it all.

While the Grand Duke and Thurso are traveling back to Hampton Palace, the Cabinet ministers and the Field Marshals of the Joint High Command Council are assembling in the Privy Council Hall.

"Are we going to support this plan with military force?" Field Marshal Alexander Kepplar, Chairman of the Joint High Command Council, asked Foreign Minister Lord Easton.

"That is something that we shall discuss today and in the coming days and weeks." Defense Minister Melville interjected.

----------------------

"Perhaps you need some incouragement to confess your crimes," the Senior Intelligence Agent said in the shadows, "we don't look to kindly on uninvited guests and we despise foreigner that break our laws. You will tell me what I want to know when I want to know it our things will be very uncomfortable for you." the Agent said as he paced around the detainee.

The Agent continued, "You know, being under that very bright and very hot light must make you very thirsty. I bet your throat is dry and your eyes are hurting. Too bad I can't help you out." he Agent then left the room. Ten minutes later the Colonial Security Division Officer came into the Interrogation Room.

"I'm sorry about the Agent. Intelligence Officers can be jaded and harsh. Just to show you that we mean you no harm, here is some water and a Ration Bar." the Officer placed the pitcher and a plate on the table just infront of the detainee. "See, they are perfectly safe." the Officer says as he takes a drink of the water and a bit of the Bar.

Leaving the Room, the Officer joins the Agent in the Observation Room.

"We have to speed this up. General Lowell thinks this man may have something to do with the murder of Richard Boyce." the Agent said.

"He'll eat the bar and drink liquid right now." the Officer said as the turned to the Climate Control Panel. He raised the temperature in the Interrogation Room to 120 degrees Farinheight, lowered the humdity to 0%, and increased the brightness of the light by a factor of 20. After a few minutes of sitting in the room, the detainee drank all the liquid and ate the Ration Bar.

The Officer then restored the climate control back to standard, the Officer and the Agent both entered the room.

"I hoped you enjoyed your meal. The liquid you so readily comsumed was the first compontent of a substance called 'Starfury'. If you do not answer my questions to my satisfaction I will begin to administer the second part of 'Starfury'. It will be most unpleasurable." the Officer said.

"The Bar you ate contained certain substances which will allow your body to conduct a 'proper' electric charge." The Agent said as he stood in the corner.

The Officer reached under the table and pulled out some electrodes and several I.V tubes.

"You see, as a Hamptonian Citizen and a officer of the Government, I cannot harm you," the Agent said, "however, my friend here in an Officer in the Colonial Security Division. He is not a Hamptonian Citizen and he is not part of the Hamptonian Government. He can 'pursuade' you." the Agent said while the Officer hooked the silent detainee up to the devices in the table.

----------------------

"Mr. Morgan? the doctor asked.

"Yes."

"I am Major Stephen Anderson, M.D. One of your associates, Mr. Richard Boyce, has been assassinated in the Diplomatic District. A single gun shot wound from the head."

"Who did this?" Morgan demanded.

"We do not know exactly. The Capital Defense Camera Network managed to get several very clear shots of the assassination and there was blood at the crime scene. We ran the blood and the picture through the National Identification Database. Since there was a "Positive Non-Match", the assassination is a foreigner." Major Anderson said while leading Morgan to a waiting transport outside the hotel.

"Where is the assassin, and where are you taking me?" the agitated Morgan said.

"Sir, the Capital Police at this very time are tracking the get away vehicle through the streets of the Captial. Since so very few streets are actually cleared for personal vehicles, they should find the assassin soon. Either way, the assassination cannot leave the country. All passengers when arriving and leaving an airport, seaport, or major transportation systems must submit to DNA and facial scanning. If our assassin tried to leave, the Royal Police will be on the perp in a moment." Major Anderson said as the transport headed toward the Captial City Defense Command Post.
