After a relatively short period of peace, the HP president has announced a 5% military budget increase. The people did not care about this, since decreases and increases are seen yearly. But what the people didn't knew was that the president was in fact one of the closest associates of our former fascist government. While he was running HP very good, people started to question his policies when he started damming in the rights of foreign people, again. Only a mere 3.7 million survived the great cleansing and it seems our president is hellbent on killing the rest of them too.
This time however, the president is much smarter. He has decided not to brag around about how many he had killed but to keep it inside the halls of his office instead.

Rarely seen by the people, the president has made a speech today.

As some of you may know, I am here to make Holy Panooly great again! We have rebuilt our military, we are rebuilding our cities and taking back what's ours! 3 vile nations tried to take us down before and I know they will try it again. Well, I assume you're going after the fleet stored in Gosis island. The harbour of Malletta is a reletavly shallow one, however the greatest threat to the ships would come from Momanguise's own submarines and Submarine destroyers.

Can I have some more information on those reefs?

When it's low tide the all reefs become ankle deep water. Sharp coral, rocks and other ship unfriendly stuff. High tide means the water is about 6 feet deep. The few gaps in the coral are heavily guarded by the HP navy.

hmmm.....Looking at your map it seems that your Island (shared with Gaalstien) is completely coral protected. Don't you think that's a bit......unrealistic for a country the size of Russia?

The Most Serene Republic of Shalrirorchia today moved to denounce the recent "sabre-rattling" of Holy Panooly. "The Free World has demonstrated time and again the willingness and capacity to stand fast against tyranny." President Tarumigan Gistarai said at a state dinner honoring regional leaders. "I call upon the people of Holy Panooly to rise in protest against the fascist enemy who currently holds the throat of their God-given liberty. You do not stand alone."

In a related story, the President's party, the Progressive Party (Formerly the Democratic-Socialists) called for increased naval patrols following the unexplained sinkings of Momanguise seagoing vessels. The Defense Ministry has publicly announced that it believes pirates are to blame for the spate of violence, and that Navy Independence-Class frigates are being deployed to protect Shalrirorchian commerce lanes.

Shalrirorchia is one of the largest economies in the region, but in the past two years has suffered a dramatic reversal of economic fortunes. Shalrirorchia currently has troops deployed in several locations around the world, with the most intense conflict being located in Shalrirorchian territory on the Arkady Islands chain. Islamic and right-wing terrorist groups have formed an uneasy alliance there and continue to battle the Shalrirorchian Defense Force for control of the province. The Defense Ministry also announced the deployment of an additional Army division and helicopters to the Arkady islands today.

In a press release in response to these accusations and threads the HP president assures Shalrirorchia that nothing will happen as long as they don't interfere with our business.

and Holy Panooly, your reef is impossible. These are the reasons why:

a) With a country that size it would be impossible to maintain the temperatures required in all area's of the island.

b) Your shores would be so shallow it would be impossible for your ships to sail.

c) The strong currents created by your landmass would rip huge segments of the reef apart.

IC: The captain of the USS Enterprise 3 of the Sol 6 Carrier group was looking at the radar when he noticed several small dots on the radar. He immediately notified fleet command about it.

Sir, I think we have encountered several unidentified vessels.

Don't just stand there go kill them!

In the meantime the Lich class submarines saw the ships on their radar. They were too far away to be sure what they were but they called the fleet command anyway. The orders were; go as deep as possible and wait until the ships are above you. Then blast them to kingdom come.

SHALRIRORCHIAN FRIGATE SRV INVINCIBLE

Captain Jacob Mallory was on the bridge of his frigate, the SRV Invincible, when it happened. The Invincible was one of two brand-new Independence-Class frigates assigned to convoy security off the coast of Shalrirorchia. The sleek warships were the leading naval edge of a Shalrirorchian effort to rebuild their armed services after nearly fifty years in what amounted to torpor. That modernization had been declared a success, but while the Army had put the new weapons to immediate use, the Navy had been far more docile. Not a single man on Invincible's crew had ever been in an actual action against hostile ships.

It therefore came as a complete surprise when the torpedo from the Lich-class attack submarine struck a merchantman several hundred yards to their port and blew it in half. The sound of numerous ship-screws, combined with the inexperience of the sonar operator, had left the shot and the submarine who'd fired it remain undetected.

"CONN! TORPEDO EXPLOSION TO PORT!" CIC squawked.

"Battle stations!" cried Mallory. "Load..."

"SIR! TO PORT!" cried one of the crew. The Captain looked to the water...and saw the second torpedo. Before he could even open his mouth again, it was too late..


SHALRIRORCHIAN FRIGATE SRV VENGEANCE

Captain Marc Hanover, for his part, cursed as a second explosion tore the Invincible, the Vengeance's sister ship, apart in an apocalyptic blast of fire and ruin. A piece of shrapnel pierced the glass of the window before him, narrowly missing him.

"SNAP TURN TO PORT!! FLANK!" roared Hanover, no amateur unlike the so-suddenly departed Mallory. Vengeance accelerated and swung sharply, combing and therefore avoiding the third torpedo that had been meant to hit her.

"Clean miss, sir." the XO said, looking off to starboard.

"Combat Info, Bridge! Ping, concentrate area search for unknown submarine on starboard, aft." Hanover shouted over the howl of the alarm klaxon. "Launch the helo!"

"CIC, pinging." the radio replied. The hull rang as the superb Seeker Mark-4 sonar system blasted the waters before it. A second passed. "BRIDGE! READ UNKNOWN CONTACT, BEARING TO YOUR COMPUTERS. TARGET SUB."

"Acknowledged. Designate this submarine Alpha-One-Hostile." Hanover said.

"Targeting computer is getting a solution, sir." the boy at Tactical announced. "Acquisition confirmed by Vengeance Target System. Helicopter is off the pad, sir, and is designated Payback-1." (The Shalrirorchians usually named their helos after the ship...for example, the SRV Battleaxe might be accompanied by a helo code name Hatchet).

"Sir, Alpha-One-Hostile has fired again! Read two fish in the water, sir!" shouted CIC.

"We have a firing solution!" called the XO.

"Match bearings and SHOOT!" cried Hanover.

The deck shuddered as two rocket-propelled "Pirahna" Mark-3 torpedoes leapt off their housing on the bow. The rockets carried them clear of the Vengeance, then separated, allowing the torpedoes to splash into the water. "Fish in the water!" called Tactical.

"Alpha-Hostile-One is diving, sir! Course change, she's accelerating! Her torpedoes are way off course!"

Hanover took a look at the tactical display and, despite the tragedy already unfolding, smirked. "Our torpedoes are faster, according to this display. Alpha-One-Hostile's had to cut her wires and move to evade."

"Conn, CIC. Alpha-One is releasing countermeasures."

"Radio, direct line." Hanover commanded, keeping an eye on the tactical display. He waited until the indicator light blinked green, then triggered a general area broadcast. "SRV Vengeance to Shalrirorchian Naval Command. We are under attack from unknown submarine, request immediate air support." the captain said, and set the mini-mike down. "Broadcast until you get a response."

"Ship's own units will contact countermeasure field in twenty seconds." the Tactical officer announced. "Ten....five....DAMN! Sir, detonation! They got fooled by the countermeasures."

"Vengeance, this is Payback-1." the radio interrupted. "We are above the target. Requesting permission to deploy weapon."

"Deploy!" snarled Hanover.

"Fish is deployed, Vengeance. We dropped RIGHT on top of her...twenty seconds to matchmaker." the helo pilot signaled.

"Conn, sonar. Hostile sub is diving fast, changing course to 180. Reading second countermeasure deployment. She's cavitating for sure, captain."

"Vengeance, torpedo is smart! Countermeasures ineffective. She's coming up....HOLY SH--!"

The bridge crew watched in awe as the enemy sub, whoever they were, exploded up from the surface of the water like a whale. Someone tried to get binoculars to identify the sub, but there was not time. The torpedo had not been shaken. A powerful blast rippled outwards from the waterline, wrapping the hostile in an embrace of flame and surf. And then the sub was gone, beneath the waterline again.

"Vengeance, I SAW the bastard! Direct hit!" Payback-1 radioed.

"Prepare a second volley!" cried Captain Hanover. But it would not be necessary.

"Conn, sonar.....she's going down...hull collapse sounds...that's a kill, Captain."

Hanover cracked his knuckles, and sighed in relief. "Sonar, full sweep of the area to confirm no more hostiles. As soon as clear, deploy rescue missions to the Invincibile and merchie. XO?"

"I'll take care of it, sir." the XO replied. "ALL DECKS! SYSTEM CHECK! And someone get the audio and sonar recordings up here now! I want to try and identify who we just sent swimming."

Theatre Wide IC:
The theme was repeated again and again...Shalrirorchian naval and civilian ships caught off guard all over the coast. Some simply vanished from the maps. Others managed to radio an SOS...but the slaughter was terrible. Three Shalrirorchian Navy frigates were sunk in the combat, as well as eight merchants...one of the victims was a major oil tanker than exploded in a fireball that could be seen all the way to the Shalrirorchian mainland. The resulting oil spill created a minor environmental catastrophe, bringing ruin to Shalrirorchia's pristine beaches and wildlife.

But the shadowy attackers had found that there was courage in the hearts of Shalrirorchia's fighting men, too. Two of the Lich-class submarines had been sunk. Three others took damage...one of those three sustained critical damage and was forced to disengage from the theatre altogether and return to port.

The Shalrirorchian military reacted like the Third World War had broken out. The whole of the Navy's Home Defense Fleet made ready...within 48 hours almost every ship in the Fleet was at sea. Many of them were not fully supplied or armed, yet the response was overwhelming. The Air Force began deploying sonar buoys as a concerted effort to hunt down the submarines commenced. And at Military Intelligence in the Shalrirorchian capital, data from the encounters was studied. They would try to determine what class and nationality of submarines had launched the attacks...and soon vengeance would be taken.


OOC- Holy, I assumed that since you were the attacker, I could RP sub losses as well as my own losses. If this is not the case, please correct me.

Well HP is located in the south pacific. The Ns world is thousands of times larger than the real one as there are a 100,000 nations with a fair few being several billion. It is easy then for HP to be holy contained in the tropics and can have a giant reef

That dosn't account for the fact that it would be torn apart by the currents created by his landmass, or that it is highly unlikely that it would be maintained (temperature) all the way around, or that his waters would be so shallow that almost no naval activity at all could be carried out. I don't have a problem with him having a reef, just not one which forms a virtual shield.

You see, you add detail to a RP, but this is really taken out of proportion. I can't even see the most vital details on your map so don't open your mouth before you have something to complain about. I am sure HP feels exactly the same way.

Again his entire country could be easily contained within the tropics of the NS world, countrys dont have a big giant radiator that they use to heat themselves up. If HP is the size of russia then the reef is miles from shore so currents shouldnt be a problem and maybe its a reef built on a inactive volcanic ridge? ever thought of that and if it was active that would raise the water temperature

For the next week and a half, the naval war off of Shalrirorchia intensified. Ships sank, airplanes deployed, men died. But as the initial surprise of the undeclared naval war faded, the Shalrirorchian Defense Force began to recover its' nerve. The Admiralty activated Plan Silver, the defense plan for the Shalrirorchian coast. The government briefly dispersed to secure bunker locations all around Shalrirorchia to ensure the continuity of the federal system. Army divisions were moved to the coastal cities to repel an invasion if such a conflict began. Shalrirorchian Central Command under the Mountain closed its' giant steel blast doors and only opened up to switch personnel. The Shalrirorchian Navy began to organize it's response, recalling ships and creating the pre-assigned task forces. Gradually, two carrier battle groups formed as Plan Silver had directed.

Military Intelligence had narrowed the field of potential attackers down to a handful of classes...one of which included the shadowy Lich-Class submarine. The detection of enemy battleships and cruisers was made three days later by a Shalrirorchian Scorpion-Class attack submarine. The Scorpion's CO wisely decided not to engage the hostiles, but rather to radio their position and make to HQ.

SHALRIRORCHIAN CENTRAL COMMAND BUNKER

"Holy Panooly has been playing a double game. Assuring us of peaceful intent, and yet waging war upon us from the depths." the President told his staff. "For this, it will pay DEARLY. But first, we need to secure our own borders. Admiral?"

"Yes sir." Admiral Thompson replied. "As you can see on the screen, we have formed two major carrier task forces...code-named Task Force Silver Shield and Task Force Shadow Sword, respectively. Each Force has one of our nuclear-powered Permanence-Class aircraft carriers. These carriers are supported in turn by two cruisers, four destroyers, and six frigates apiece. Two Scorpion-Class attack submarines also escort each group." he added.

"The enemy task force was seen in profile by one of our subs, confirming their identity. While our sub-killing task forces hunt down the enemy subs, it will fall to the carrier battle groups to deal with the enemy fleet. In approximately three hours, Shadow Sword and Silver Shield will both launch a full air strike on that fleet if it comes within range of Shalrirorchia. Since we don't detect any carriers in their midst, we presume they have no air cover. A most serious tactical error." Admiral Westcott said. "They are armed with the lastest Javelin-Mark 4 anti-ship missiles. Think Exocet, only with a slightly shorter range and a slightly bigger punch. We would ordinarily launch aircraft from the Shalrirorchian mainland to support the carriers as well, but this action is too far out to see, we've not got the range."

"In the meantime..." the nation's spy chief interjected, "We are inserting agents into Holy Panooly through neutral countries posing as foreign businessmen. The danger to our agents at this point is relatively low...they are merely surveying and attempting to contact the rumored democratic underground, if it exists. Nevertheless, they ARE in enemy territory, and we selected some of our best spies to carry out this mission. We are prepared to perform an emergency extraction if they are discovered, but such an extraction would surely reveal our hand to Holy Panooly if we had to carry it out."

"Then let us hope that the agents remain unnoticed." the President said.

Shalrirorchia prepares to notify its' public of the Panooly treachery. An order for general mobilization has been issued to the SDF. The carrier battle groups launch the operation. The sub killing task forces seek to eradicate all sub activity in their sectors. Shalrirorchia quietly begins to conduct satellite recon of Holy Panooly where possible. The intelligence services begin searching for an underground, and try to contact dissidents within Holy Panooly itself. Shalrirorchia begins withdrawing troops from peacekeeping operations around the world, but sends reinforcement garrisons to all Shalrirorchian embassies.

Mr president, the element of surprise is over. The president nodded, since he already knew it. I suggest we keep up the pressure and send some more Liches to that place, along with Sea King anti submarine helicopters. There's already a major naval force near their shores. Although we have no idea what they're doing, it won't make our mission easier.

Mr Leighmar, I want you to send 10 Firestorm arsenal ships to there and a few of those Sea Shadows.

"Mr. President, we need to get you out of here NOW." the Secret Service agent said, his voice toneless and not betraying the true seriousness of the situation.

President Gistarai was quickly hustled onto the presidential aircraft, a Boeing 747 painted in handsome colors of deep, rich blue, white, and silver. The words "REPUBLIC OF SHALRIRORCHIA" were painted in white relief on the side. The engines were already turning over.

"Report!" the President called as soon as he stepped into the War Room on board the aircraft. Glasses of water rattled as the plane took off at a steep angle.

"Sir..." the aide replied. "The incoming air strike consists of roughly 75 aircraft. Major strategic bombers for sure. Defense Air Command is mustering our fighters as we speak. And all Surface-To-Air missile batteries have been put on full alert around the capital."

"Good. Where are WE going?" the President asked.

"Sir, we are heading to Lajesa Air Force Base...away from the incoming strike, obviously. Once there, you will deplane if necessary. We are trying to get in touch with the other nations currently quarreling with Holy Panooly as you requested. If we are successful, we'll give Air Force One a full military escort as you travel to the Conference. IF we can get a meeting, sir. Shalrirorchia's a bit new on this."


WEST COAST DEFENSE DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
AIR DEFENSE COMMAND

"Sir, tally's up. We have approximately 45 fighters in the air...mostly Eagles and Falcons...that's every fighter currently available to this district."

"Very good." replied General Metkamp, commander of the Defense District that included the capital. "What about the carrier groups?"

"Silver Shield is already heavily engaged, sir, but is within range, and may be able to contribute as many as twenty Tomcats to the fray. Shadow Sword is out of range...she cannot help us. Not directly, anyway....but her skipper has a plan."



TASK FORCE SHADOW SWORD
CVN LIBERTY

The nuclear-powered carrier Liberty was almost ready to launch the air strike. The briefing for the pilots was underway.

"Gentlemen," Captain Sodalis said. "Our radar has detected what we believe are a number of Panooly tanker aircraft at the coordinates marked on your maps. This makes sense...Holy Panooly is more than a few grids away from Shalrirorchia. It's doubtful that they could fly nonstop both here and back without refueling at some point on their journey. We are therefore going to deprive them of this crutch if we can."

"Sir..." one of the pilots said, holding up his hand. "They are bombing our homes! How is taking out flying gas cans gonna hurt them back?!"

"Easy, Sasha." Sodalis replied, cracking his knuckles. "If they need those tankers to launch direct attacks on Shalrirorchia, then shooting them out of the sky will not hinder THIS attack. But it'll sure as hell hurt them the next time they want to launch such a strike. And who knows? If they haven't refueled yet, then that means they intended to do so on the way back home. We destroy those tankers in THAT case, and they lose their entire air strike wing for lack of fuel. Make this a quick, powerful blow lads. Intel thinks Panooly is sending more ships soon. They clearly want to control the seas around Shalrirorchia...and if they succeed in THAT, then it's only a matter of time before the fascists storm the beaches. Now go out and kill me some Panooly airplanes. I want some of their wings to construct a hood ornament for my carrier. Move it!"

"Yes sir!" the pilots roared in unison.

Sodalis returned to the command deck, just in time to meet his red-faced XO. "SIR! It's started!" the XO panted, handing him a sheet of dispatch paper from HQ...

Attention all pilotes, redirect your course to their navy. These are direct orders from the president. We have set up a new plan, attack their navy and then we will bomb them from the sea. Send 2 B2's to their cities with little protection. All tanker aircraft except 1 must return to the HP military installations. When you reach their harbours, start bombing them.

The president walked to a large map on the wall and looked at it. He immediately saw our biggest weakness; the distance between us and them.

Mr Leighmar, I want more anti aircraft protection. Send it 5 AA cruisers from the Imperator VI, V and VII group. We still haven't managed to destroy their carriers. Send it the 3rd command ship Samurai with an airwing and some battleships. We are going to take care of their carriers. When they are gone, we rule the seas.

I want to see Mr Rixx, I have a special job for him.

The following day brought one of the most grim moments in Shalrirorchian naval history.

The shift of enemy aircraft deployment was almost immediately obvious on Shalrirorchia's air defense radar network. Using the MILSTARS satellite system, Central Command immediately notified all task forces of the redeployment.

It was in this way that a naval battle with an intensity not seen since Jutland commenced.

The Shalrirorchian harbors were hit first. Although few ships remained at anchor by this point, the harbors still contained vital fuel, ammunition, and machine shops, all of which took damage on some level. One Shalrirorchian cruiser was caught trying to leave the harbor at Mpani. It was hit badly and sank in the channel, blocking naval traffic in and out of that harbor and forcing the task force units based there to relocate to different ports. The Shalrirorchians succeeded in intercepting the B2s headed for the capital city...the Defense Force would not allow the civilians of Shalrirorchia to come to harm if they could help it.

Task Force Shadow Sword was not so lucky. Her Tomcats did their best to hold back the tidal wave of bombers, but several got through the CAP. Among the victims of the failure was the task force flagship, SRV Liberty. The carrier took multiple missile hits...one penetrated the armored flight deck and exploded in the hangar. This caused multiple, earth-wracking secondary explosions as airplanes, bombs, and fuel all went up, creating a firestorm. The smoke of the burning fleet carrier drew Panooly warships to her like a moth to flame.

That afternoon the first engagement involving a Shalrirorchian battleship was joined. In an era of modern aircraft carriers, many had considered the SRV Battleaxe to be a relic of naval warfare. But the battleship's presence that day was a godsend. As the Panooly squadron approached, the Battleaxe stood between them and Task Force Shadow Sword. Her 12 16-inch guns swung majestically about to come to bear on the enemies of Shalrirorchia, guided by the MILSTARS network and her own internal firing computers. Then, with a thunder of naval gunnery that actually pushed the entire battleship to port, SRV Battleaxe fired her weapons in anger at them.

The stricken Liberty was dead in the water. Her aircraft were forced to land on Silver Shield's flat-top, or try to make the flight back to Shalrirorchia. Many of the crew had perished in the flames. Half of the task force's frigates had been sunk in the attack (3). The shattered carrier was forced to run aground on one of the smaller outlying Arkady Islands to avoid sinking. She was at that point abandoned, save for a Marine detachment to guard her reactors. Perhaps if Shalrirochia could win this war she would be retrieved and repaired, but there was no time for that this day. The surviving ships merged with Task Force Silver Shield. With all other Shalrirochian naval vessels half a world away, Silver Shield now stood alone in defending the nation's waterways.

At exactly 2:35 PM, the plane that nobody knew existed took off from a non-descript air base in coastal Shalrirorchia. Painted in charcoal-black, she would blend in to the night sky once she reached her target. She flew at the direct command of President Tarumigan Gistarai.

The battle losses of the previous day were not yet fully tallied (OOC-including losses for Panooly)...but thousands of the nation's sailors and airmen had died fighting the fascist beast. The air crew of Shadow Hawk Three were eager but professional.

Shadow-Hawk Three was a stealth bomber. The world did not know Shalrirorchia had developed stealth aircraft....hells, the world did not know a lot of things. But they were about to find out. Shalrirorchia only possessed six of these hyper-advanced aircraft...the enormous price tag had caused a stir in the Legislature. But production had been confirmed a few weeks ago.

Shadow-Hawk Three was to proceed along a tightly-fixed schedule that had been mapped out by the MINUTE. At the halfway mark she would meet with a single, lone refueling tanker far south of the combat zone. That tanker was flying low to avoid radar detection. Refueling would take place far below the recommended altitutde, all in the name of secrecy. Although this was highly dangerous, some of the best pilots in the Air Force were flying both the bomber and the tanker. And the computer systems would guide them along inch by INCH.

Once refueling was accomplished, Shadow Hawk Three was to turn north....to Holy Panooly. Her vast coral reefs would not protect her from THIS retributive stroke. Shalrirorchia was going to make a point to Holy Panooly and her people.

This single stealth bomber "buttoned up" upon reaching enemy territory...wasting fuel and speed, but also reducing her already small thermal signature even further. "They'll think they got blasted by a flying toaster." someone snickered.

The pilot reviewed his orders. At 9:30 the President of Shalrirorchia would go on international television and denounce the evil and violence of the regime of Holy Panooly. The speech was scheduled to end at 9:45 when the President said the words, "We did not ask for this fight. But when the world's dictators endanger freedom, they WILL be held to account."

It was seconds after those words that the bomb was scheduled to hit.

Deep in the belly of that airplane was the payload....a massive 14,000 pound bomb, one of the largest in the Shalrirorchian arsenal. So large it could barely FIT in the stealth bomber. The average bombs rated 2,000 pounds, the JDAMS. This monster was certainly out of the ordinary. She could be guided by both laser and GPS tracking...making ABSOLUTELY sure that the bomb landed precisely where Command wanted it.

Command wanted it to land on the executive mansion of Holy Panooly, their equivalent of a White House.

Even if it did not get the President of Holy Panooly, it was certain to cause a stir. National monuments are not wiped off the face of the planet every day after all. And think of all the information that would get blown up.

The pilot checked his watch. Five hours, twenty two minutes, and nineteen seconds until showtime.

"Smile you bastards. A friend is coming to visit." the pilot whispered.

OOC- Just so everyone knows, a bomb that size is equivalent to a Daisy Cutter. We are talking serious explosive power, gentlemen. ;)

OOC- British Communists, can Shalrirorchia host a conference between the leaders of the anti-Panooly coalition? If that's not in the cards, we can travel to you, but we'd like clearance to provide a military escort for the President all the way up until he deplanes.

ON BOARD THE STEALTH BOMBER

"How very inconvenient!" shouted the pilot, Ray Matterson. "One...no TWO SAMs closing."

"What the DEVIL?" shouted the co-pilot. "How?! This is a stealth aircraft...there's no system in the world that can track it!" shouted the copilot.

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean it's completely -undetectable- replied Matterson. "Executing evasive maneuvers!"

Matterson had two responsibilities weighing on his mind. The FIRST was to get his ordinance to the target. The second was to preserve his airplane and by extension his crew.

He flipped the countermeasures subsystem online, the pale green glow of the control panel painting his face. All Shalrirorchian combat aircraft came equipped with a full suite of countermeasures. But if he activated those right now, they'd not only locate him but TRACK him too, which was much worse.

The idea came to Matterson and his copilot simultaneously. They both watched the screen as those Patriot missile shrieked towards them. At the last possible moment he depressed a button on the panel, firing half a dozen flares and a pair of chaff canisters which exploded violently behind them. Matterson took the bomber into a steep dive...so steep that the copilot yelled, "WATCH OUT YOU IDIOT, TREES!"

They leveled off almost at treetop level, -below- radar range. The missiles went off with a thunderclap that rattled them even down here. Matterson smiled. If a Panooly operator had been watching that exchange as he knew they were, they might well mistake the sudden vanishing of the Shalrirorchian "blip" as proof that the aircraft had gone down. There was certainly enough flame in the sky.

"Tap-dancing Christ, sir, could you have cut it any closer?" the copilot breathed. Matterson shook his head. "Replot course for the Panooly capital. And Bill? Kindly keep us at this low altitude, and bring us in over forest this time. Those nazis saw us, somehow, and I am not going to make the same mistake twice."



SHALRIRORCHIAN CENTRAL COMMAND

Beregovoy stared balefully at the screen projections. The situation was, unfortunately, getting worse.

"Silver Shield Task Force is under immense pressure, sir. Panooly seems to have an inexhaustible supply of warships." General Metkamp muttered. "At this rate, Panooly warships'll be on our port cities before the week is out."

Beregovoy drummed his fingers on the table and considered the tactical situation. Shalrirorchia had precisely five modern nuclear aircraft carriers. Of these, one was at the Arkady Islands...bombed, crippled and abandoned. Two more were with Task Force Silver Shield, the last line of defense for the Shalrirorchian coast. The other two were still abroad. They had orders to return home with all due haste, but they were still half a world away. He'd have to do without them for now.

"Sir, Silver Shield cannot defend ALL the West Coast. Panooly has clear lines of assault to the southern provinces. Army Command and the Marines are deploying all up and down the coastline. The only positive is that, since this is OUR backyard, our airfields are all right here. If there's a ground confrontation, we'll have all the air cover we could possibly want." Metkamp said.

Beregovoy cursed. He had a duty to protect his nation. And he had a moral imperative...Free-Country Shalrirorchia was not supposed to be threatened in this manner. Where was the rest of the Free World!?!?

"Gentlemen, the situation is grim. With Shadow Sword gone, and the ports under direct threat, the time has come to reassess our tactics. So far we've been fighting a textbook war, which apparently was expected by Panooly's Navy." Captain Smith announced.

"That means, gentlemen, we need to get innovative in order to win. In fact, that is why this briefing is under way...we have a crazy-ass idea so out-of-this-world it may actually work." he added.

"Thanks to the dissolution of Shadow Sword, we now have an abundance of vessels with cruise missile capability. Cruise missiles, obviously, are not exactly intended for naval warfare. But we're going to MAKE them fit this plan. Tom?"

"Yes sir." replied Tom Locke. "We've spent all day and all night replacing some of the warheads on those cruise missiles with transponders. When we fire them, they will appear to be, to our radar as well as the enemies'...a full flight of carrier strike aircraft."

"This will provide us with two advantages.." Smith told them. "First, any missile or aircraft intercepts will shoot down dummy cruise missiles, not real Shalrirorchian planes. And second, it's sure to divert the Panooly fleet's attention while the smaller...and REAL aircraft strike force approaches from the opposite direction. Those airplanes will fly low to avoid detection, and are carrying Javelin antiship warheads.

"A diversion." one of the pilots realized.

"Damn right." Smith replied. They are gonna freak out, seeing that many "airplanes" on their radar. Won't they be surprised when YOU gentlemen come out of nowhere and blow them all to hell. Suit up, boys. Mission's in 20 minutes. Let's MOVE!"

IC: Sir... I don't know what to say but I belive I'm seeing hundrends of fighterplanes coming this way. Should we alert the carriers, they will be the prime target for sure. Shoot several high range AA missiles to that flank. If they use an evasion maneuver then we're sure they are in fact aircraft. But sir, I can clearly see on the radar...
Not a word. We still have enough time to alert the coastal defence batteries. I hope you don't mind we'll play around with those silly people. In 10 to 15 minutes they will be able to see them. They'll reach our coast in 40 tp 50 minutes.

13 Minutes later...

Sir they're still going the same course. What shall we do know?

Call the carrier group captain and let him ask for more AA protection and set sail to the enemy coast. If I am correct we have Firestorm Arsenal ships there. If they're crossing the Red Line start a full scale coastal bombardment. Oh yeah, and ready the mobile anti ballistic missile group. Let them head for the coast of former Theohuanacu.

Aye Sir.

ON BOARD THE STEALTH BOMBER

Matterson checked the ETA and scowled. Then he leaned back in his chair and said, "You know they'll be waiting for us, yes?"

The copilot and some of the other crew on the plane agreed over the radio. "You bet your wings that they have more of those missiles."

"Very well..." the pilot replied in a jovial, conversational tone. "We will now dedicate the next ten minutes to devising a way to defeat this threat, or I am turning this plane around. We cannot afford to lose a STEALTH aircraft in Panooly territory. A normal bomber, yes, but not a stealth."

"Sir..." one of the crew members comm-paged. "Who says we need to remain undetected?"

"Explain." Matterson commanded.

"Yes, sir. We can fly in low...THIS low in fact. Even if they do have patriots deployed, they won't have time to react. There'll be a roar of engines, a massive aircraft will fly directly overhead. By the time the missile batteries will be able to lock on, we'll have whipped past them. And at this level, the city's buildings and heat'll probably mess with any missiles that DO get fired. And we still have flares."

"And what if they send fighters after us?" Matterson asked.

"Well, sir. They have no idea where the hell we are. They don't even know if we crashed or not. The first sign that they'll have is when they hear our engines roaring over their capital, and -then- it'll be too late to intercept. But the plan does have two serious drawbacks. We'll have to lift just before dropping the bomb. Although this probably won't give them enough time to kill us before the weapon is deployed, I am not sure if this airplane can gain altitude fast enough to avoid getting caught in the bomb blast. Second, all of this ground-alt op has been draining our fuel reserves. We do not have enough gas to return to Shalrirorchia if we do this.

"But we CAN radio ahead for a tanker." replied Matterson. "I like this plan. Crazy. Dangerous. Just about the LEAST probable course of action any sane fliers would take. Let's make it happen, Carl."

"Yes sir. Panooly capital is on the grid."

Commander, I am still worried about the missing B2.

I am too and we have to find it. We have no idea where he's heading. If he didn't crashed at all. And since our country is simply too big to spot a crash or explosion we can only rely on our radar systems.

True. But we can do something about it. As I remember, all our radar sites are equipped with a central command connection, a database for just about any known airplane or other military unit. And in the database there's also a directory with sounds of airplanes which are able to carry nuclear loads. If we can track B2 sounds with our radar systems we can tell where it is and where it's heading. If we hear if long enough we might lock a few patriots onto it.
