New Battleship Unveiled

In response to growing obseletity in the Confederate Navy, the Fluffy Technology Bureau drew up plans for a sleu of new vessels designed to match that of all foriegn competitors, but really only one was selected the: the King Shark-class Battleship, designed to be able to crush opposing super-battleships, ships that have been most feared since the real recognition of naval obseletity. Following plans a single hull was laid, which has been completed, with a short speech from the President:

"My fellow Confederates, it is on this day I give to you a wonderful sight: the first realisation of our dreams for a new super-battleship, one to match the largest of all vessels. This follows the goal of our engineers to produce a ship armed with railguns, and we feel it will match anything on the waves. Now, withour further ado, let us launch this fair vessel, the Tiger Shark, and may God bless it."

The Tiger Shark is the first King Shark to be laid, and it is truly a remarkable ship, though it is no where near as large as the super-ships of other navies. Rather, it simply has two massive railguns, one on front, one on back, with a large hydrogen powered, many poled, compulsator to power each of the guns, the guns needing (and I worked this out) 28,173,200 amperes of current to fire a single 2,000 kilogram shot, reaching a velocity of about mach 13.15, plasmafying the sabot case where it touches the rail. Within 0.0044 seconds the massive kinetic energy weapon has cleared the rails, the case has fallen off, and it is underway.

The ship has no other weapons than the railguns, making it vulnerable to attack by air or submarine, but that is rememdied by the many ships that would be near it. The ship is 900 feet long with a displacement of 60,000 tons, a crew of 400 (thanks to there being only two weapons, they need only move the ship, aim the two guns, power the engines, etc.).Armored with over 4" of our special composite armor: steel, mixed with depleted uranium and Diamond Like Carbon, the ship is well armored should the entire fleet be penetrated and bombers make it to the vessel. Most of the area beneath the deck is filled with hydrogen cells to turn the compulsators and generate power for the guns. Massive surge protection devices ensure that the surge of power after the weapon is shot do not destroy the power generating systems.

So, here are the specs:

Armament:

2 20 meter long rail guns

Misc.

Crew: 400
Length: 900 feet
Armor: 4" special composite armor
Various surge protection devices on all systems
Hardening against EMP
Displacement: 60,000 tons
Speed: 32 knots
Cost: $20,000,000,000 (20 billion)

Also, is it possible to mod these ships to have phalanx systems?

It might be, but I chose not to because with these things, with other weapons, would take up space for shells for the gun, and would take up vital power from the railguns. You could possibly elongate the rails in the railguns to save on power, equip it with more powerful engines for the compulsators (the power generating devices for the railguns) so that less of the rest of the ship's power need be taken up in the firing. But the cost of these things is like half your budget, so if you are willing to use that much money up, order confirmed, Bleland.

Japanese Antarctica: I am working on that, just the problem is most battleship pictures have conventional guns, not rail guns...

So did it come with the mod? If so what's the price. If it's too expensive then I'll just go with the standard one.

Edit: Also a question about the rail gun, it can take out a building right?

A rail gun could shoot a pinball to the moon if powerful enough. A building would all depend on what you were firing.

Ok thanks, a few more questions.

What is the rate of fire for this thing, like how long does it take to reload and recharge and stuff, generally speaking how long does it take to fire the next round?

Another question is how much ammo does each ship hold.

The specs look nice, but 4" seems a little thin. The guns seem nice, but one or two antiaircraft would make it feasible for actual battle use. I think popular science or one of those magazines had an article on railguns recently.

Let me find the ROF....It is theoretically possible for a railgun to fire at 1,200 rounds per minute, assuming the rails do not melt and it is constantly charged with electricity. The constantly charged thing is no matter to us: by using hydrogen fuel cells and electrolsys (sp?) one can break down water into its components and take the the hydrogen to theoreticaly have unlimited power, the compulsator being powered by an H cell. Melting is somewhat of a problem: if the shell stays on the rail long enough its gonna weld itself on there and transform your beautiful gun into a puddle of slag. So the two rails must not be electrically connected for more than a few mili-seconds, which is all well and good.

Because the gun is obviously firing shells too heavy to be loaded automatically by an air compressor, shells are loaded onto the gun manualy by the magnetic power of the gun, which slides them onto the rails from non-cunductive rails behind the metal rails, disconnected slightly from the main rails by 2 cms of space to prevent any anomylies (sp?). Because these rails have high fricton one them (the reloading ones), it is hoped that they will provide 1 second in between shots, as they are positioned farther from the rail gun's magnetic field, thus giving a ROF of 60 shots per minute, theoretically. Once the reloading rails are unloaded, they must be manualy loaded. Rails can hold only 10 shots, but with teams of people reloading the rails manualy we have achieved a ROF of 30 rounds a minute.

Yes, this will destroy a building, assuming you use the maximum 2,000 kg shell and hit it right.

Ships hold six hundred rounds of ammo, which can be fired within.

The ships will be sold unmodded, the upgrades shouldn't cost you more than $500 million.

I suppose the armor is thin on certain spots on the ship, but on the sides I think it is thicker than usual. Mods for anti-air are being developed, I will post the official variation soon, for now, add your own.

Your response is slightly delayed, but that is half of your entire budet, I think. Are you sure you want to spend that much? Parhaps another 2 would suit you better?
