BREAKING: Basse Normandie Declares Independance, Rebels Up in Arms

Camper l'Aigle, Caene, Basse-Normandie

The months of tension between the state of Basse-Normandie and its mother country France exploded early this morning, as armed French peacekeepers were forced to fire non lethal rounds into approaching rioters. The rebels then turned to more violent methods of persuasion, presenting their arms and dispatching the soldiers in a flurry of hate-bred carnage.

The troops garrisoned at the base rallied and tried to push back the men, but eventually gave up and retreated to a nearby checkpoint, leaving behind the weaponry and equipment.

Upon hearing the news, French President Jacque Chirac ordered immediate action against the rebels, before the real threat arises. Several regiments are en route to the state to quell the rebellion.

From the acting rebel leader, Travis Gautier:

"We have been spit on long enough, and it is time for Basse-Normandie to act! ~static~ ...and it is because...that filthy pig that we must resort to this. ..... We ask for international support in our endeavour for freedom. Vival La Resistance! *Transmission End*

Chirac has urged the international community to disregard the actions and statements of Gautier, saying this is an 'internal matter and will be dealt with as such.'

As we continue to get information of the subject, FNN will keep you posted.

[OOC: There won't be an IC response from Sarzonia because we're in the middle of our own civil war.

However, I'm impressed with this from someone who's new to NS. Did you play the game previously or did you observe the roleplays before creating a country? The only quibble I have (and it's really a quibble) is that the reasons for secession aren't outlined as much as I would like. Other than that, nice job!]

To Morathania:

"We thank you for your support, my friend. If all goes as planned perhaps a healthy friendship between our to nations can be arranged.

Travis Gautier, Rebel Leader

President Chirac dismisses Morathania's position on the matter, and goes about his business.

(ooc: Yes, I have played Nationstates in the past. I was Neo-Wu and Daikerta, both major players and strong allies of today's national powerhouses (eg; AMF, etc.). I haven't been able to get these nations revived (if that is possible), so I decided to start fresh. The reason for I do not have a clear reason why this rebellion is taking place is because Im still plotting the storyline in my head right now. Soon it will be posted for more indepth reading on the subject.

Also, if there are any mods reading this, if there is a way to revive nations (with the pop they had before they were deleted), umm...I'd be really happy if you could do me a favor! )

President Mike Sarzo spent the good part of the day just resting and relaxing in his private bedroom in the Gray House, when Senior Vice President for External Affairs Mark Lorber called him on the intercom system.

"Yes, Mark?"

"I'm sure you've heard about Basse-Normandie's attempts to declare independence from France?"

"I heard something about it, but as you well know, our hands are a bit full dealing with reconstruction issues and how to reintegrate Bausch back into Sarzonia after our own civil war."

"I understand that, Mike. However, this is a pretty ugly situation. It seems President Jacque Chirac is using violent force to quell the rebellion."

"Mark, remember we had to use so-called violent force to put down a civil war of our own. We can't get into a situation where we're throwing our military weight around. We'll have legions of demoralized troops and ships that have to be rebuilt from the ground up; not to mention burned out fighters and bombers. This had better be a doozy."

"It may very well be, Mr. President."

"Well, monitor the situation. I'll ask Nicole to concentrate on the reconstruction efforts and come up with a plan for reintegration."

When Lorber got off his intercom connection, Sarzo began to ponder. He called Becky, since she was working late.

"Becky, this is Mike."

"Yes, Mr. President?"

"I need you to draft a letter asking for President Chirac to explain just what in the heck is going on over there. Inform him that we have civilians and interests over there and strongly advise him not to damage those interests."

"But Mr. President, what if he considers that a threat of war? Won't he think we're still in our war?"

"If he wants to push us, he'll get a rude surprise, won't he? I'd still like to hear his side of the story before we decide which course of action to take."

"Yes, sir."

Sarzo pulled the covers of the bed to the side. He got in and set his head down on the pillow. Hopefully, he could get a good night's sleep for the first time in a while.
