Breaking news:

Following weeks of lengthy discussions with the Mikoyan aircraft company of Russia, Lasatania has been granted permission to manufacture a derivative of the Mig-21 Fishbed fighter. Given the age of the aircraft and its relative incomplexity, the Mig 21-Bis will prove an inexpensive air defence solution for burgeoning nations.

Lasatanian Aviation Industries has allocated the designation LAS-F2 to the Lasatanian model, which will come equipped with the followig weapons systems:

One 23mm GSh-23 cannon. One centreline and four underwing hardpoints can carry a total ordnance load of 2000kg (4410Ib). Options include four rocket pods, or two 500kg (1100Ib) and two 250kg (550lb) bombs, M-2 Atoll’ and R-60 AA-8 ‘Aphid’ AAMs

The approximate cost of the LAI-F2 will be $350,000 excluding weapons sytems. Nations interested in purchasing this aircraft should either post below or contact the Lasatanian Ministry of Production at Lasatania@obrach.zzn.com

LAS-F2 [Mig-21BIS / Fishbed-N]

Truly one of the most remarkable aircraft of the Cold War period and perhaps the most successful aircraft in terms of number built since World War II, the MiG-21 has seen service with some 47 different nations throughout Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Eastern Europe since the late 1950s. The Soviet Air Force requested a short-range interceptor to replace the MiG-17 and MiG-19 fighters in 1953. After experimenting with various wing configurations, the Mikoyan Gurevich design bureau chose a tailed delta configuration which eventually became the MiG-21. The original design was extremely light and maneuverable with exceptional reliability, sortie-rate, and low cost of operation. However, the MiG-21 long suffered from short range, small payload, and poor avionics suite. Later models were improved with more powerful and fuel efficient engines, radar, and ground attack capability increasing the aircraft's versatility and effectiveness.

I know! But I found it interesting all these people going on about superbombers like the B52 - B36, fact is the MIG 21 represents an ideal way of defending your air space at next to no cost.. go figure - even if it costs three of these to take down one B52, you're quids in! :) A similar analogy would be the RAF during the Battle of Britain, and its use of the Hurricane. Not technilogically the best but a workhorse! It's like jackyls attacking a bison really!

My nation has 2,000 MiG-21s, and 2,000 MiG-15s... They are only used by the Youth Air Sacrifice Corps or if the real planes are taken out. (Suicide attacks... Their job is to crash into enemy ships during war time).

ooc: Doesn't look like much of a 'variant' so much as a licence built copy... personally I'd offer some AA-11/R-73 IR-guided AAMs along with the Atoll and Aphids. Some versions have ranges up to about 40km, which is quite respectable, and being as they've their own infrared seeker they're probably not too difficult to incorporate into the arsenal of less than top-notch weapons platforms such as the old MiG-21. Plus its one of the best IR-guided AAMs going. Dra-pol's Su-15-D and Su-17-D carry such weapons, allowing them to be moderately effective, when boosted by numerical superiority and the fact of the carrier-aircraft's own high speed (the Su-15 being capable of Mach 2.4 sprints, potentially allowing it to hit enemy aircraft carrying crappy old Atolls or Sidewinders and escape again intact).
Yes yes, I'm done. I just wanted to make an issue of my preference for the Drapoel Su-15 over the everyone-else MiG-21 :) The Drapoel PAAF- No.1 air force in the backwards world! (so we maintain)

OOC:

This and the other models advertised today are just the beginning ofthis nation's aeronautical industry. They will obviously be direct copies with little mod given the infancy of the industry but over time I'm sure more advanced avionics and weapons systems will be added.. I'm keeping the tech in this as realistic as possible and bulk-buying ex-Sovviet stock is probably one of the cheapest methods for a minor nation to acquire an air force. As for the SU-15, couldn't agree more - hence while you were posting I was actully getting the data and pic for it... scary!!
