The Bonstocknian Sagas: the Saga of Harald, son of Gustav

"Herr Field Marshal, there is no news to report today."

"That shall be sufficient, von Steuben." The grizzled old Field Marshal, in full, olive green Army uniform, sat down. His medals gave testament to the mortal battles in which he'd fought o'er the years, and the five stars on his collar signified his rank. His face bore the scars of his many wars, and the years he'd spent at war. He turned his wrinkled face over to the man, of similar age, wearing a white naval uniform. He spoke clearly, with slight accent, "Admiral von Steuben, what if they lived?"

"What if who lived, sir?"

"The old rebels... what if they're lurking among us."

Another man, same in age as the other two, and of slightly darker complection, in an Air Force uniform, made his voice heard in the conversation. "Field Marshal Adolphus, the rebels were extinguished in the Great War. What could the dead inflict upon us?"

"Do not ever underestimate what the dead can do, General Lung. No matter how dead one you kill, he will always have a soul to carry on the fight."

Lung said nothing in return, and looked down, the words sinking into his mind. Von Steuben spoke, "In any case, I find these rebels could not possibly still exist. We eliminated them in their entirety, and they could not possibly return."

"Perhaps, von Steuben, but only time will tell. Now, I must go. We meet tomarrow, for our inspection trips in the far off colonies of the Bonstocknian realm." With that, he rose from his seat at the head of the table, took his wood baton in hand, and walked slowly but surely out the door. Acending an elevator out of the bunker, he walked into the streets, o'er to a tall tenament housing, in a dark and dreary setting. The night was black as black could be, illuminated only by the streetlamps and window lights which lined the streets. As Adolphus entered the building, he came upon the elevator, and entered. He accended there, and exited the elevator on a high floor, walking in his slow fashion to a door. He reached into his pockets for the keys, which he found and used to open the door. He walked in, upon his home, which had a couch and a small kitchen. Closing the door, he proceeded into a bedroom, where he came upon a younger looking woman, sitting on the bed, holding a bundle in her arms. The woman looked up, and quietly said, "Gustav, you are home early."

"Yes, my dear. I cannot help but think of something."

"An old, dead spirit which continues to haunt?"

"Yes." He kneeled down, and sat upon the bed. "How is our Harald?"

The woman removed some of the blanket, revealing a small baby. "He is sleeping."

"He has the right idea. It is quite late." He looked at the clock, which gave the time to be one hour after midnight.

"Yes." The woman got up, and put the baby in its crib, and turned off the light.

T'was but four hours later that the man rose again, and silently retraced his steps to the bunker below. Von Steuben and Lung greeted him in the room. The Field Marshal spoke first. "Is our plane to Maropian Coast ready?"

"Yes," spoke Lung. Von Stueben nodded in agreement. An official car was ready to take them to the airport, which the boarded and departed aboard, and got upon their plane.

(...continued)

The Gulfstream jet flew up beyond the clouds. As the three men sat on their seats, they gazed out the window on the wide ocean blue. Spoke Gustavus Adolphus, "Lung, von Steuben, I have fears of a problem we cannot contain. The rebel bug we did smash, only to have parts of it spread 'round the world. I fear for our ability to maintain our Federal Republic."

At that moment, the plane was surrounded by many planes, fighter jets. The pilot veered below, to try and escape, but this was to no avail. Adolphus looked beyond his window. He then spoke, "Lung, did we have fighter escort on this mission, for I fear these are not friendly."

Looking clearly out the window, Lung sighed briefly. "My sir, they are not ours." The looks on all three men went straight to cold, white fear.

Gustavus Adolphus spoke, for his last time. "May God have mercy upon our country." The end did swiftly follow.

The chaos that followed was quite swift, with one man, known by his surname of Burns, an old Bonstocknian commander, rising to full prominance. He claimed he be the rightful heir to the title of President, and with this power, dissolved the Parliament and courts, and took power absolute. For eight-teen long, hard winters did he thus rule, marked by torture, violence and destruction at the hands of his followers, and by the build-up of a vast array of weaponry to defend his unlawful rule.

But in these eight-teen winters, he grew of age, his hair turned from brilliant brown to a dulling gray, he stopped to walk without his cane, and became tired at every turn. He became fearful of what could be lurking in the distance, and figured that anyone of any prominance could become a threat to him.

And thus one day he did hear of peasants tales of a man of great strength. He did of this man fear, and thus he called upon his assistant. Spoke he did, "Bring me this man, who is told about as being of great strenght, the man who say the peasants, could take an army on with but himself, and still emerge victorious."

"Yes, m'lord, it shall be done."

And thus brought upon the leader was a quite young man. He was tall, well built, and he stood tall, commanding. His brown hair shone against that of the older man. Spoke the old man did, "Are you the man that they say in the streets as being of great strength?"

"Yes, I am that man of which you speak."

"What is it that has gained you such reputation?"

"In one instance, a mere month before this day, I stopped a truck full of food on its way to a cattle ranch with my bare hands, and distributed the food among the people, who thanked me greatly."

"And what is your name?"

"I am called Harald, and Gustav was my father."

"Well, ye who is called Harald, son of Gustav, I extend to you an offer, to channel your efforts to helping me."

Harald, son of Gustav, spoke, "I would be most honored, m'lord."

"Very well then, your first assignment shall be to hunt down those unloyal to me. You will have the firm support of the army commander Tostig. You shall report to him immediatly."

"Very well. I shall do that."

He took leave of the room, and went to find this commander who was called Tostig. He arrived at the place he was to report to, and stated his business. Tostig spoke, "Very well, you must find a network of dissidents in this area, but be cautious, for associations can be deadly in these days."

Harald, son of Gustav, spoke, "That I understand, and I almost see a certain futility to this assignment. I do not believe our leader Burns knows what is best for the Bonstocknian lands. To my belief, he must go."

"If that is what you are to do, ye son of Gustav, then I pledge to you all forces at my disposal."

"I thank you for your kindness, now I shall do what I was sent to do." Harald exited, and left to do his duty. He knew of many places, but instead he betrayed one who did not exist, and he reported back to the leader.

Harald spoke, "My lord, I have encountered a group who do not share your beliefs in an area of Port Yuko."

"Excellant. You could be quite a use to me. For this, I will place you in charge of my bodyguards."

"I thank you for this honor, and shall faithfully go through with it, my lord." Harald then left, and returned to Tostig, and informed him of his new appointment. Tostig spoke, "This is a most perfect situation."

Harald, son of Gustav, spoke, "It is time for a new lord for the Bonstocknian realm."

"Then I pledge to you all which I can spare," said Tostig, and they worked their plan out.

That night, there was a feast in Port Yuko. With all the guards instructed about the plot, Harald waited until the right moment. Then, as Burns the leader entered the feast hall, several guards grabbed him and took him away. Harald, son of Gustav, followed them as the forces of Tostig took over the streets. Harald entered the cell where Burns was held. Burns spoke, "Ye son of Gustav, you have betrayed me."

"As you betrayed my father eight-teen long winters ago. My father perished by your sword, now you shall perish by mine."

"Very well, son of Gustav. But be weary, for every man like you will have his faults. You may now see me as your greatest enemy, but believe me, the greatest enemy of any man is his own confidence. May it be the end of you." With this, the guards led Burns away. Tostig entered, and reported his success.

Harald, son of Gustav, spoke, "Now that we are sucessful, we must not stop here. I feel that at this age, my sucess can only become greater. I feel it is time to take what my father could never take. Ready our fleets in their entirity, and make preparations to sail at once to the Pacific isles my father once gazed upon with envy, and which I shall fully honor him by taking."

"I pledge to you, son of Gustav, all the help I can offer, and do believe you fit to rule Bonstock."

ooc: this isn't really a revolution... its at least two years after the present time when the RP starts, and in the story 18 years passes. So this is technically twenty years in the future, and until I finish this, I'll still RP as with my current leaders.

Also, in case East Islandia and Hudecia did not notice:

"Now that we are sucessful, we must not stop here. I feel that at this age, my sucess can only become greater. I feel it is time to take what my father could never take. Ready our fleets in their entirity, and make preparations to sail at once to the Pacific isles my father once gazed upon with envy, and which I shall fully honor him by taking."

Being that he is son of Gustav, more commonly known as Gustavus Adolphus, do you realize what he means?

OOC: LOL.. thank you for pointing that out in such a clear fashion... but I had noticed... just I'm not sure what that means... I figure it means one of a few things...

1) Taiwan
2) Japan
3) Some other small islands which no one is quite sure the name of ... (but I think he has bigger plans)

In any case... the Hudecian navy is on stand-by

IC:

In light of the increasing uncertainty surrounding the Bonstockian leadership the Hudecian navy begins moving naval assets to Japan.

OOC: A question though... how are we going to do this considering it is supposed to be in the future? I mean.. right now I am in the middle of a war... so do we just assume the war has ended by then? And what about East Islandia's government problems?
Bonstock
09-06-2004, 23:31
ooc: hey, Hudecia, lets make a deal here... I'm not really in this in a competitive sense, in fact I want to loose. That's sorta the point of the story.

How about you and the Azn resistance feign lack of defenses on, say, Okinawa or some other place. Harald, with his inexperiance and over-confidence, will swallow the bait whole. There's no opposition on the beaches, so Harald and his forces march right into a trap, get surrounded, and thrown back into the sea with enourmous casualties, among which will be the dead Harald. Bonstock's government again collapses, and you guys win the war.

And, about it being in the future, I guess we just assume that all of our current wars are finished, and perhaps our leaders are very old. I'm not sure what EI will do, though he/she might use whatever leader comes after Premier Chai.

And so the vast fleet ordered by Harald was assembled in the harbor, filling with young Northmen troops who'd join their leader this day. Harald, son of Gustav, walked out upon the docks, surveyed his massive force of war, and climbed aboard his flagship.

The sea was crisp with waves of white that spashed upon the Northmen's ships, as they sailed west from their harbor thus.

Aboard his ship, Harald, son of Gustav, spoke: "It is now that we are afloat that we must show, what we have come to bleed thus for. The isles my father dreamt about are soon within our grasp. Hold fast ye mighty ships and sail on to victory!"

It was an immense fleet that sailed from the Bonstocknian realm that day. Some four-hundred ships, brimming with troops and men, sailed away, on towards a distant shore. As the sea splashed against them the men waited for their chance, to land upon the soil of their enemies, and claim them for their own.

Hudecian warships begin to shadow the Bonstockian fleet. The ships remain well out of any strike range and veer off whenever it even seems like the Bonstockians may make a move on them.

The 3rd Hudecian Marine Corps is moved to Okinawa to bolster its defences, while the 1st and 2nd corps are loaded onto assault carriers and transports for quick transport to wherever Bonstock may threaten.

From Tokyo, the Hudecian 1st and 2nd Battle Fleets consisting of almost 200 warships and 100 other assorted vessels prepares to move out.

ooc: Thanks for showing divisions going up on Okinawa... the point is for us to fall into a trap.

EI, I made this story based on the old saga of Harald Hardrada, King of Norway. He too became wildly sucessful, but then bit off more then he could chew by invading England. Thinking that the English ruler Harold Godwinsson did not have adequate forces in the north of England, he invaded with lightly armored Viking troops. Then the English came in force, and Harald was defeated and killed at the battle of Stamford bridge in 1066. Later that year, Harold Godwinsson of England was defeated and killed by Duke William of Normandy at Hastings. William would later be known as William the Conqueror, and his descendants rule England today.

So thus my RP might sound a bit like the old saga.

ic:

But the sea was much to violent, and the enemy much to active, to make the quick invasion such was Harald's intention. Lingering on, he sailed his fleet into the Bonstocknian possessions in the Sakishima islands, behind the great net of the Bonstocknian air defenses.

ooc: This isn't as I planned. You hide forces on, say, Okinawa, but FEIGN WEAKNESS. Act like you have nothing, but after I invade, you and your fleets and armies encircle me and I die.

That's how I want the story to go, at least. Unlike my other wars, this is a story centering around one person, with a plot with conflict theme and all the other shit they taught me in English class.

'tis the point of RP to tell a story, right?

I actually have even bigger plans once I'm done with this.

ic:

Entering the harbors calm, blessed by softness in the weather, Tostig spoke on the greatest ship: "Harald, my leader, we know through sight alone, that our enemies plot to kill us quick. I see from our spies and planes that the enemy gathers, awaiting us. We havn't even declared a war and yet they have thus fought, attacking us with all of spirit. We must turn back from this endeavour, take our prize another time, for we cannot withstand such onslaught from the Eastern realms."

Harald, son of Gustav, spoke: "Though I agree with your opinion greatly, I do not think we can abandon this. We shall merely wait, for we can see, the enemy has offered only little for us to battle."

A man entered, quite joyfully, he bore news of a great haul. He spoke: "Harald, my leader, I have great news, for our forces have captured twelve men, who we think to be of Islandian employment, and who contain plans for deployments 'round the prizes which we speak of."

"Most wonderful is our fourtune thus, but I am almost weary. Bring me the men who we hath captured, and search them for documents of the Eastern defenses near the islands we've cast our eyes on."

The men, in shackles, were brought before Harald for him to look upon. Harald, son of Gustav, questioned them: "From whenst hath you come, ye sons of East Islandia?"

"We were from Okinawa, we were probing the Sakishimas."

"What are the defenses I might find on Okinawa?"

A guard handed Harald a briefing documenting defenses, found among the captured men. Harald gazed upon it, and read. "Two divisions around the air field at Kadena, Tostig do you realize, what this could mean for our expedition, for we have ten times what they can put out. Ready our fleets to sail at once, for they have no defense against our onslaught. Full speed, and may the winds carry our fleet on to victory so sweet."

The ships took to sail, and skimmed across an ocean blessed with good weather. As they continued on to the objective hence, they sent small forces to deal with the fleets of their enemies. Some destroyers fired many fearsome missiles at the enemy, to destroy or at least distract the ships, as the Bonstocknian fleet made a dash for the prize of Okinawa.

As the ships sailed forth, Tostig lamented to Harald, "Sir I fear this assault will be the end of us, for I fear our enemies have set a trap. Certainly, there will be little opposition on the shore, but then, when we are certain that victory is within our grasp, they shall spring forth from their lairs, and destroy us all. I fear for us upon this day."

Harald, son of Gustav, spoke in reply, "I do not think we have to fear. Look at our knowledge. None of our enemies would be capable of such a feat with their little numbers. Our invasion will certainly be successful."

Good sailing tidings had aided them greatly, and the trip was completed with out incident. The four-hundred ships, the pride of the fleet, each had seven-hundred and fifty of the Northmen warriors, loaded well upon their assault vehicles. They had missiles bristling to ward of ships, planes and sub-marine ships. Each had aboard six planes to aid in the assault which was to go on. They launched, the first wave, with six-hundred, and flew above Okinawa. The Northmens' planes rained fire upon the enemy below, scortching the earth where the warriors would fight and die. But many were lost, for the enemy had sent up planes and missiles to intercept. The sky was a sea of fire as the storm clouds gathered. The beaches erupted from bombs and shellings.

Then, with swiftness, the Northmen's assault vehicles approached the shore, with Harald leading fast ahead. Neigh ten thousand of them, loaded with three hundred thousand Northmen warriors, got off the beaches with no incident. Then they proceeded forth to take whole the island. Then the Northmen's fears did come true.

ooc: spring your trap.

Hudecian snipers were lying in wait all over the beachead that Bonstock thought was secure.

-On the opposite side of Okinawa-

The Bonstockian pilot looked down in terror at the Hudecia fleet moving around the island ready to strike.

He quickly jumped on the radio, frantically screaming, trying to get a hold of someone, anyone. But his radio was jammed. In the distance he saw a squadron of Hudecian fighters moving towards him, their noses glinting in the sun, taunting him.

"I must warn the others," he thought aloud. Performing a perfect 180 he gunned his plane towards safety. His dashboard lit up warning him that the Hudecians had fired on him.

He swerved as one missile passed under his left wing. He went into a nose dive as another passed over his cockpit. Fear gripped his heart as he told himself over and over again of his duty.

A third missile clipped his wing, failing to detonate but causing him to temporarily lose control. Unable to avoid the fourth missile, a tear ran down his cheek as the missile collided with his plane.

Although the Hudecians were outnumbered on the ground, they took advantage of the element of surprise. A full armoured assault involving 200 000 troops and thousands of tanks and strike helicopters.

There was no preliminary artillery barrage, for fear of destroying the hastily prepared but well hidden tunnel network.

Tens of thousands of Hudecian troops seemed to sprout from the ground behind the Bonstockian front lines. They captured advance command centers, destroyed communication bases, and pillaged Bonstockian supply convoys.

The front was in chaos, with Hudecians in front, Hudecians behind things seemed to be going badly, but then they got a lot worse.

Thousands of aircraft hummed above the waterline in front of the Hudecian navy which came out from around Okinawa. Missile fire probably caught the Bonstockians off guard and would cause severe amounts of damage.

With only a minimal amount of air cover available to the Bonstockians, and the maximum for the Hudecians, it was obvious where the advantage lied.

WIth an answering roar, the several thousand men and women near the coast, faces painted dark green as Islandian military tradition dictated, began to fire on the incoming Bonstockians with missiles and small arms.

Alll along the coast, encased sodium explosives detonated all along the coast, and hidden mines exploded, sending plums of water hundreds of feet into the air.

In the air, Islandian fighters engaged Bonstockian planes in a deadly duel, immediately after all SAM batteries fired their projectiles at maximum range.

The Islandian ships begin to attack the Bonstockian fleet, sending hundreds of EMPs to first knock out fleet defences, followed by a second wave of HE missiles.

A fifteen thousand lb explosive, moored several km from the coast, is detonated.

Harald gazed into his binoculars, expecting quick victory. But lo did he see before him the advance of the Hudecians. Though they could not penetrate into the rear, for there was but a small beachhead, their fire was quick and penetrating, and their attacks were breaking through.

Aboard a plane a lone Northman did not feel no fear. Fear itself was unknown to him, along with all his race. He thought merely of his duty, and the glory of Valhalla, and with his plane a heaping wreck, he aimed himself, laden with bombs, straight into the Hudecian advance.

The explosion was grand, a ball of flame, debris was spread in every which way. Harald looked at the commotion, seeing blown Hudecian tanks and dying, bleeding infantrymen. Knowing this was the opperatunity, he ordered all to charge; the Northmen cried ferocious chants, and rushed into the hole.

Harald, son of Gustav spoke, with Tostig right behind, "Ahead, all men, for we shall charge, to victory or death. May he who dies with me tonight dine with me in Valhalla."

And the Northmen followed him, in their armored vehicles. Ahead they charged, and dismounted from their vehicles, and spread with detirmination across the lines. But lo, the Islandians were right behind, as Harald could see from his binoculars.

Then Harald took his mighty sword, and went before his troops, and led the charge himself, with all his men following in suit.

Then suddenly a crack was felt. As they charged on, a single bullet, be it well aimed or guided by the wings of fate, lodged in the throat of Harald, son of Gustav.

The Northmen looked on, to see their falled leader. Enraged and furious, they all charged forth, into the center of the Islandian advance. Like madmen they rushed, killing all in sight. Great plumes of fire sprouted up, as they ran across.

And though they had pushed far ahead, it would be their undoing, for their flanks were left unguarded, and they were surrounded, cut off from the sea. The Northmen bravely stood their ground upon their fallen hero, and they warded off the advance of their enemies.

But lo, so many died in quite short order. Feeling no fear, simply shooting at the enemy, none would e're surrender.

But the situation was hopeless, as the Northmen died off quick. Though they stood there bravely, they could not save themselves. The planes above were shot out of the sky, and bravely showed their last measure of devotion by using their lives to destroy others on the ground, while the ships at sea were sunk in dozens, firing back as best they could with Harpoon missiles.

Finally, the Northmen left, decided there was no hope hence, and tried to withdraw to the beach, to go to a waiting ship. But to no avail was this last effort, and almost all were killed. Those lucky enough not to be surrounded had already left.

The Northmen thus stood onto the beaches, their weapons low on ammunition, their clothing tattered and soiled, themselves hungry and tired, and they fought on, some with knives and bayonets, some with their teeth and fists. Blood, oil, and burning metal would fill this tide today. The ships left withdrew, to fight another day.

Of three hundred thousand men who landed, but fifty thousand were still alive, and on transports retreating, for none would surrender. Of four-hundred ships that embarked for this, only thirty would e're return.

The Northmen trodded out of ships, defeated and forlorn, their fallen leader's corpse was brought all tattered up and torn. The men build in Port Yuko's tip a pyre to their lord, and burned in flames did the Northern king as mourned all the hoard.

Tostig, still alive, bore news of the defeat, and as the tyrant Burns escaped, he made sure to find his foe. Regaining power he did, though now he was quite old, and Bonstock plunged into a darker age, so the fates fortold.

"Uh, sir, how about that Air Force brigadier in there, Lung?"

"Ah, yes, Lung. The more sons of those generals we kill, the less threat to me. Give him some fancy title or something to think he's not doing something sui..."

A man appeared before him. "Did you ask for me, sir?"

"Ah, yes, Brigadier General Maxwell Lung, Bonstocknian Air Force. I was thinking we needed someone to take over overall defense of the Sakishima islands and Maropian Coast. I was wondering..."

"Yes, sir, I would be most pleased."

"Excellent... take the next plane to the Coast."

"Yes, sir!" He grabbed Burn's hand, and started to shake it.

"Ow, my... I mean run along now. The clock is ticking!" With Lung a safe distance away, Burns said, "Smithers, get me something for this arm."

"Yes, sir."

A C-17 took off from Port Yuko International Airport, and flew towards Maropian Coast. It landed, and Lung walked out, and looked over his troops.

"Ten, hut!"

The pilots stood at attention.

"What squadron is this?"

One of the men looked at the officer. "This is Air Force Asia Command."

"All of it?" There were perhaps 100 pilots. "Where are your planes?"

One of the men pointed. A few dozen F-15s lay on the tarmac, rusted and damp.

"This is going to be harder then I thought," murmered Lung under his breath.

"I almost feel bad for them," Lt. Rei said, watching the Bonstockian positions from his squad's camouflaged OP in the Sakishimas. "Almost."

"Right," Sgt. Queenie Eng replied. "So get the rest of the observations down and we're gonna be at our exfil in an hour."

The squad finished their observations and packed up, making sure nothing was left behind as they reached a nearby beach and uncovered their Zodiac boat, making for open sea, where they were quickly picked up by a Huang class submarine. Bonstockian defenses had just been hit by a massive EMP strike, as was standard operating procedure and which had also become commonplace over the past few weeks.

In any case, plenty of submarines were also nearby, just in case any Bonstockians decided to disrupt the exfiltration.

"F15s?" General Liu asked, ready to laugh her ass off.

And what an ass she has, her adjutant thought, mentally licking his lips. In the past few years, Islandian Forces Command Pacific had been literally infiltrated by bombshell female officers, something which had never been seen, or done before. Most of them were products of hte IMperial Military Academy's Ground Force Skool, and most were more than competent (women are trained harsher than men in Islandia).

Whatever the case, General Liu Feng and her adjutant, Hawk General Omura, were looking at various pictures of the Bonstockian Air Force's "Asia Command."

"There cant be more than a hundred pilots and seventy odd F15s," Liu remarked.

"Careful General," her adjutant reminded her. Omura was a lot older than Liu, and although more experienced, had himself turned down about three promotions. Someone had to guide the senior officers, and although Liu herself was also quite good at her job, she needed more caution. "Those F15s killed lots of my squadmates during the Islandian Wars."

Among Islandian pilots, East Islandian ones at least, there was a hate of many things American. Of course, it might have been that the American intelligence services had supplied plenty of weapons to the breakaway West Islandian republic in its infancy, and had also given it WMDs, weapons which were almost used against Islandia. Hence, all American ships were thoroughly harassed and smacked around.

"True," General Liu conceded. "I believe this called for a probe of the defenses."

Omura's knees weakened. "P-P-Probe?" he asked.

"Yes, General," Liu said, looking at him strangely before she realized what was going through his mind. "NOT THAT you pervert!"

"What?" Omura asked innocently. "I'll lead the probe."

"Oh," Liu said. "Then do it."

"Well, what the bloody hell do we have to defend?"

"General Lung..."

"No. We cannot intercept."

"But sir?"

"That is an order. Tell our SA-2 sites to stand down as well. Give the dispersal orders."

"Roger, sir, if that is what you wish."

Meanwhile, a small platoon of the 8th Maropian Infantry Division was patrolling somewhere in the Sakishimas. Villiagers had reported some strange sights, probably some travellers but none the less important to see.

"Yo, Sergeant, what's that?"

"Looks like some motorboat. Lieutenant!"

"Yes, Sergeant?"

"We got a visual on an object on the beach." He pointed.

"3rd Platoon, on me!"

They marched over to the boat. Suddenly, someone started rushing towards them.

The Lieutenant yelled "Halt!"

The message was met with gunfire. Two Maropians were killed instantly. "Open fire! Open fire!"

The 30-odd Maropians started firing wildly at the enemy from around the Zodiac boat. They started throwing grenades in the direction of the enemy.

A radio operator called in for reinforcements. Eightteen UH-60s were scrambled immediatly, and started flying in the general direction. But they were still at least two minutes away.

Power in the Sakishima islands and Maropian Coast was virtually non-existant, with the exception of underground generators that had been hardened to resist EMPs, and only powered command bunkers.

Meanwhile, a little girl, [insert random Chinese girls name], woke up in her rural house in Maropian Coast. The village was calm and peaceful. War seemed so far away, though from her bedroom window she could gaze at both the _Taiwanese border and the sea.

She got dressed, and walked down for breakfast. "Mommy, what's for breakfast."

"Here, sweety." Her mom handed her a small ball of rice. "There's nothing more."

"Mommy, why do we have only this to eat? Why can't I have my Frosted Flakes?"

"Because the big bad East Islandians are at war with us. We can only eat what we can produce."

"Where's daddy?"

"He's on a business trip to Hualien. He's working in the factories, helping beat the Islandians and the Hudecians. Now don't forget your lunch."

"Thank you mommy." She took the pail, and ate her breakfast.

"Now, run along to school. You don't want to be late, now, do you?"

"Thanks mommy." She started to walk to the door. "Mommy, when will big brother [insert random Chinese boy's name] get home?"

"When the war's over."

"Mommy, what if he gets killed?"

"He won't. He's gonna beat those dirty East Islandian and Hudecians, and be home before New Years."

She smiled, and then walked out the door. She walked on the side of the dirt road, past the rice paddies and farmers huts like her own, past the posters of East Islandian and Hudecian soldiers with blood dripping from their mouths and rifle bayonets, to the school house about a block away. She walked in, and went to her class room.

The teacher spoke, "Now kids, I have something very important to talk about. It's about the war..."

The little girl interupted, "Teacher [randomname], when is my brother gonna come home from the war?"

"When we beat those dirty Islandians and Hudecians."

"When will that happen?"

"I... I don't... soon."

"I hope its soon," she said under her breath.

One of Rei's squadmembers pulled out an antitank launcher, firing it at hte direction of the enemy.

Not only were the Hudecian Avro Arrow IIs taking pictures of the Bonstockian defences, or rather, what passed for defences, but they were also searching for secret underground passages.

Hudecian Military Command was paranoid about underground tunnels. Ever since the Drapoel Wars, where the Drapoel had overrun hundred of kilometres thanks to the use of vast tunnel networks, they had prepared for such a reoccurance.

Sources, however, could not identify where the landings would take place on the island, but did say it would be within 24 hours, and that the landings would be made by Hudecian 3rd Marine and 5th Infantry divisions. We have noted two task forces, one much farther to the east, according to our sattelites, and making fast south, perhaps to hook and attack us from the rear, but we're not sure."

"Well, it looks like this is the moment we've been waiting for. How many forces do we have there?"

"According to our reports, the 296th Transportation Brigade, the 243rd Ordinance Brigade, and the 643rd Engineers Brigade, about 9,000 troops, sir."

"Dispatch a small battle group to the area, something to hole them up at the beaches while we send for reinforcements. We cannot have them pass. They must bleed for every inch of that island."

Meanwhile, the small platoon started firing back. Suddenly, they heard something loud. "HIT THE DIRT! AT MISSILE!"

The men dove out of the way. "I'm gonna get that bastard!" said one of the soldiers. He aimed his M-4 at the man witht the rocket launcher, and fired a burst of automatic fire at his chest. Suddenly, a bullet struck him in the neck. Some one screamed for a medic, but it was too late.

The helicopters flew over. Some 216 troops rappelled out, right onto the Islandians below. Firing their M-4s wildly, they surrounded the Islandians.

Then a SAM flew, and took out the lead Blackhawk. It plummeted to Earth, right over four unsuspecting Bonstocknian troops. There were no survivors.

"We got a Blackhawk down, SA-7 missile, we think! Deploy flares, and get that sub!"

Six Blackhawks flew over the water, as the others fired rockets into the Islandians. The six dropped depth charges at the submarine, though two were struck with missiles.

Down the shoreline a second group of 30 men and women had landed. Their mission was slightly different than Miyazaki's. They were to infiltrate local villages and contact their agents already in Karimata. In much smaller groups they would spread out into other major cities like Hirara and Gusukube.

ic: As little Chang Li walked home from school, she saw flying overhead some F-15 fighters. They screamed towards the sea, to the east. She looked up, partly with astonishment at the sight.

High above the clouds, Chang Xun, a twenty year old pilot, sped towards the Sakishimas.

"Grasshound 3, Grasshound 3," crackled the radio. "Vector to join lead."

"Roger, Grasshound 1."

The planes, four in total, flew low over the sea, so low that the waves almost touched against the planes.

"Grasshound flight, you are inbound into Hashbrown. Vector 060 for landing."

"Roger, Hashbrown base. Grasshound flight begining descent."

Night was still upon the men. Only with the instruments could they land with any safety.

"Hashbrown base confirming landfall."

"Roger, landfall made. Approach nominal."

"Roger. Grasshound flight cleared for landing."

"Roger. Will do."

The planes approached the small stretch of highway that the Air Force had labelled Hashbrown, one of many dispersal bases across the Sakishimas, this one just south of Hirara, Miyako island. The giant birds of war gracefully kissed the ground below, and sputtered to a stop. Then they taxied into small garages in disguised civilian homes, each only large enough for one F-15. Support staff were occupying the homes, in addition to the families who had let them enter.

Chang Xun got out of his Eagle, and his feet hit the ground. It was dark, and not a soul dared stir. The garage door closed behind him. A door opened.

"In here, flyboy!" called a voice.

"Thanks."

He walked in. A man said, "Want some chow, flyboy?"

"Yes, please."

The man handed him a ball of rice, which was gratefully eaten.

"May I go to sleep?"

"No. We're on alert. Rumor has it the Hudecians are planning a landing in the next 24 hours. We gotta keep ready."

"All right." He sat down next to the wall. He took a pen from his shirt, and some paper. Then he started writing a letter.

He folded his note, and put it in an envelope, and sealed it. "Hand this to whatever bastard does the mail 'round here," he said, handing it off to the man.

"I happen to be that bastard, Lieutenant."

"Well, take care of that for me, will ya?"

"Yeah."

He then leaned back against the wall, and fell asleep.

Rei shrugged and slapped a grenade into his grenade launcher. He fired it high in the air, and when it came tumbling down near them, a thick red smoke covered the area. He repeated twice, and smiled at the captain, now barely visible.

"See what I mean?" he asked.

ooc: I backtracked a bit. My soldiers found the Zodiac boat on the beach, and your SOFs were running to the beach.

Really, you can't just leave a boat on a beach and expect it not to be found while you're away. The better way would be to have a boat insert SOFs and then return to the sub, and then return to pick up the SOFs when they're finished.

ic:

"Sir, take a good look at this."

"What?"

"We got inbound cruise missiles and bombers. Should we engage?"

"No. What are their targets?"

"I... dont know sir. Somewhere in the Sakishimas, just all over the place."

"All right, here's the deal. Patriot and SA-2 missiles will deal with the Islandian aircraft and bombers. We keep our planes for the critical point."

"All right, sir."

All over the Sakishimas, air-raid alarms sounded. People rushed to bomb shelters, as 45 Patriot and 36 SA-20 sites fired their missiles at the enemy.

"This is Patriot battery 35, we have a lock on a wave of hostile cruise missiles."

"Roger, clear to engage."

"All launchers, fire!"

All six of the site's launchers sent their missiles arching skyward, aimed at the waves of Islandian cruise missiles.

Meanwhile, each of the 36 SA-20 sites fired their missiles at the H-7s above, trying to bring them down.

A teenager in Ishigaki was walking home from school, when suddenly the alarms rang. Almost instantly, she saw missiles approach. She donned her gas mask quickly, hoping there was no chemical or biological weapon aboard. Fear filled her heart, and she asked herself "Why do the Islandians have to do this?"

She saw Bonstocknian missiles arc skyward to destroy the cruise missiles. "Bless those valiant Bonstocknians for keeping us safe!" she thought to herself.

Suddenly, a missile out of no where plummeted into her apartment complex. The sky grew bright from the explosion. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, and many people killed.

She went over to help any survivors. Bricks, window glass, and dust littered the street. Twisted metal that was once cars lay mutilated in the debris. Trees were burning, and fallen over. Emergency crews rushed to the scene.

She saw a neighbor struggle away. She looked away, and then glanced back, and noticed that he had no legs, and was trailing blood as he crawled. "Mr Miyazaki!" she screamed, as she ran over to help him.

"Ms. Hatanaka, please... get me water... water..." Then he collapsed onto the ground. She tried to help him, and took his pulse. It was faint, and then it stopped.

All around she heard moans of the injured, dead, and dying. Her apartment was a pile of fine dust, bricks, and broken glass. She ran over, to where her house once was. She saw a hand clutch up from the dust. She pulled it, and found the mutilated corpse of her mother. She collapsed into a sea of tears.

-Miyako Island-

Like thunder the Hudecian battleships pounded the beaches in advance of the landing.

Thousands of Hudecian marines and infantry poured onto the North east and southern parts of the island. (ten thousand to be exact)

In the air above, 200 Hudecian fighters patrolled the skies, watching for enemy fighters to appear.

-South Miyako Jima- Ontario Beach-

The 5th Infantry Division had little difficulty in securing an intial beachead. This was party due to the 201st Armoured Brigade which was brought ashore along with the 203rd Engineering Brigade in the first wave.

The other 3 brigades came ashore acting in supporting roles. In total, there were 5 000 troops on this beach alone. Behind them, the 5th Marine and 5th Mechanized Infantry were waiting to also move ashore.

-Northeast Miyako Jima- Alberta Beach-

The 3rd Marine had a much tougher time on their beach. Despite being supported by helicopters and a large part of the navy, the Bonstockians seemed better prepared for their attack.

It was hoped that the 5 000 marines could break through without more support, but it was becoming painfully obvious that the beach would not be secure by the time the 3rd Infantry landed in another hour.

Fortunately, some of the 30 - odd plainclothes Hudecian SOFs were in the area helping direct bombing runs on the Bonstockian positions. This pattern was repeated at major command centres and military bases across the island. Within minutes of the first Hudecian troops landing on the beaches, Tomahawk missiles had struck at the Bonstockian military command and control centres across the island. "Bunker Buster" bombs were being carried in by Hudecian Avro Arrow IIs, in preparation for targeting the deepest bunkers that Bonstock had developed on the island.

"Sir, they've landed."

"Perfect. Let our pipes loose."

Suddenly, as the waves of Hudecians got to shore, a pipeline surrounding the island was blown at the sites of both the landing beaches. Inside was a vast amount of flammable gasoline; the waters near the beaches became engulfed in an inferno, along with the Hudecian landing craft.

Meanwhile, six hundred F-15 fighters took off from dispersed highway bases all over the Sakishimas. Having been hidden from any observation by the thick forests, they flew high, to nearly 90,000 feet. From there, they looked down upon the inferior numbered Hudecians, and, using look-down shoot-down technology, shot their missiles down one by one upon the enemy.

With all the Hudecian aircraft involved in the aerial combat, 600 A-10s from more dispersed bases take off. Three hundred fly to each beach, and rain 30mm cannon fire on beaches, tanks, and landing craft.

ooc: Hmm... where are East Islandia and Hudecia? Oh well!

ic, a few hours before the landing:

A young Japanese woman on Miyako-jima, who was working for the "resistance," heard a knock on the door. She walked over, and opened it up. Ten Hudecians were waiting at the door.

"Ah, you must be the Hudecians... come here, have some tea."

"Thank you, miss," said one of them.

"Please, leave your weapons by the door. I don't want to scare my little siblings."

"All right." They left their weapons at the door, and went in for tea. A little boy scampered off, and dialed a number on the telephone.

As the young woman served tea, another knock was heard at the door. "I'll just be a minute." said the woman, as the Hudecians enjoyed their tea.

A few moments later, two dozen armed Bonstocknian soldiers entered the room. "OUT! OUT! EVERYBODY OUT! YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!"

The men were grabbed, frisked, and gagged, tazed, and were thouroughly searched, partly to prevent any of them from killing themselves, as they were needed. The young lady looked over, and smiled. "Siyo-nara, Hudecian bastards!"

This same thing happened at two other houses. The Hudecians should have known, after 20-odd years of Bonstocknian rule, sending representatives to the Bonstocknian parliament and influencing Bonstocknian culture and demographics, that the Sakishiman citizens felt as Bonstocknian as the Bonstocknians themselves.

The plain-clothes agents were taken to a detention facility on the outskirts of Hirara, and interrogated. From this, Bonstocknian agents knew exactly where and when the landings would take place.

A few hours later:

The 600 trucks of the 296th "Transportation" Brigade split into two separate groups of three hundred each, and went over to the landing areas. Suddenly, each of the truck's cargo containers were arched upward. Out of each came four RBS-15 mk.6 anti-ship missiles. Each of them had not only a large warhead, but a computer system that let them maneuver around CIWS and anti-missile missile fire. 1200 missiles streaked low towards each of the Hudecian landing forces.

-Alberta Beach and Ontario Beach-

The vast pipelines that surrounded the island had been badly damaged by the pre-landing barrage. This interrupted the natural flow of the gasoline, causing it to pool in certain areas. Not that it mattered much anyway on Ontario Beach, the first wave landed via helicopters for the most part.

Nevertheless, on Alberta beach the infernos that resulted did cause some havoc on the landing.

-Bonstockian Interrogation Rooms-

The plan had gone off without a hitch. All 30 agents had told the same lie after varying times of torture. This is what they had been prepared for.

The Bonstockian missile strikes would miss the actual beaches by about 15 miles.

Admiral Smetka was estatic... not because his men were dying, but because he had been proven right about the trap.

"Now its time for a little surprise of our own..."

With so many fighters taking off it became obvious to the surviving agents on the ground where all the airbases were hidden.

Tomahawk missile strikes would level the airbases while their planes were gone. As for the anti-shipping weapons, now that they were exposed on the beaches, right where Smetka wanted them, he launched a similar strike on those forces.

The full load of Hudecian aircraft from the 7 aircraft carriers now took off, adding another 600 fighters to the 200 already in the air fighting.

ooc: Hudecia, do you think I would aim my radar and infrared homing anti-ship missiles based on the words of a few motley spies? Come on, that is BLATENT godmoddery. Half of your fleet should be at the bottom of the sea.

ic:

Dozens of men in plain clothes, all civilians, ran over to the barracks of the 801th Ordinance Brigade. After showing their ID badges, they entered a huge underground parking garage, disguised as a normal civilian one. Inside, they quickly changd into their camflouge fatigues, and got into their vehicles.

Four Mechanized divisions worth of troops got in quickly. To each beach, 300 Leopard IIS tanks, 600 CV-90 IFVs, 150 Crusader artillery systems, 300 supply trucks, and 6,000 HMMWVs sped.

With the Hudecian fighters being distracted by Bonstocknian fighters, who had lost 107 of their own so far, 300 A-10s flew low over each beach.

Over Ontario beach, the southern beach, 300 A-10s flew over the coastline. Suddenly, they spotted thir targets. The tanks of what intel told them to be of the Hudecian 201st Armored Brigade, and the foot soldiers of the 5th Infantry Division. The A-10 pilots fired their guns into the tanks. Small arms fire quickly destroyed the engines of 8 A-10s, and the pilots had to bail out over Bonstocknian territory. The rest fired Hellfire missilesand guns at the tanks and infantry. All over the beach, there was blood and debris.

Then the 150 Crusader pieces assigned here started firing. Their 155mm shells tore great holes in the ground as they flew accuratly at the Hudecians. The barrage lasted for two minutes, and fired some 3,000 shells at the beachead.

Then, with the beach full of smoke, 300 Leopard IIS tanks and 600 CV-90s sped onto the beaches. The IFVs fired their 40mm chain-guns wildly at the Hudecian infantry, as Bonstocknian soldiers got out and fired their M-4 rifles an SAWs. Small arms fire hit them everywhere, along with Hudecian ships which lodged shells straight into the Bonstocknians. The suriviving tanks fired at the Bonstocknian tanks, who fired back with their 120mm cannons. Sixty Bonstocknin tanks were knocked out in the first minute of this brutal armored melee, along with 90 CV-90s. As Bonstocknians got out of their CV-90s, Hudecians fired at the IFVs with anti-tank missiles, knocking them out, then machine gunning the Bonstocknian infantry. The smell of burning flesh and oil overtook the scene, as the sound of bullets and shells deafened all who listened. The beach and tide grew red and black from blood and oil, and became littered with twisted gray iron debris. The dead were cremated in the burning hulls of their tanks or IFVs, or otherwise strewn and mutilated along the sand. Two thousand Bonstocknians were dead, in merely the first five minutes of the counter offensive, at this one, lonely strip of sand, surf, and jungle that the Hudecians dubbed Ontario.

Simultaneously, the Bonstocknians would fight and die at the northern beach, dubbed Alberta by the Hudecian invaders. The three-hundred Warthogs made their strike, loosing 19 of their own, sending the helicopter-borne Hudecian infantry into chaos, followed by the 150 Crusaders barrage. The assault of three hundred tanks and six hundred armored infantry vehicles was overtured by the two minute barrage. Then they were let loose to fufill this final act.

These men had fought and bled with Harald on that fateful day. They chanted his battle-cry as they charged on to die. With bullets flying and shells exploding, they bled for memory of their fallen lord. They sky grew black with smoke. In a few minutes, over a thousand of them were laid low, 30 tanks and 60 vehicles blown to bits along the beach. Hudecian Tomahawk missiles added to the slaughter, killing more thousands, including many civilians as their targets, the anti-ship launchers, were in civilian areas.

Finally, another Bonstocknian wave was let loose. By now, over two-hundred F-15Cs were forced to ground, exploding in giant fireballs on the forest below. Yet, 600 more Bonstocknian fighters, F-15E Strike Eagles, flew far north of the island. They let loose their missiles: Each one had a Phoenix anti-ship missile to fire. Nearly a hundred missiles would fly at each the Hudecian carriers. But Hudecian ships fired ant-aircraft missiles at the Eagles way up high. Two-hundred-and-sixty-five were forced down upon the sea below. Some pilots, knowing that their planes were going down, made one last measure of devotion: they dove down, straight onto Hudecian ships. Hundreds of aviators would die.

What a sad day it was for Bonstock-rike, as young men charged to die. The sun grew high: nearly 5,000 Bonstocknians were laid low for an eternal rest.

OOC: Well.... Bonstock you just did say that you discovered the location of our beaches and the landing fleet from the captured 'spies'. And you are one to accuse others of godmodding... I haven't complained about your godmodding ..

ie.. hiding thousands of aircraft and thousands of armoured vehicles from total detection... which is 100% unrealistic and godmodding...

or the fact that you claimed to have known in advance where I was going to land... when not even my officers had been told yet...

or claiming that a mere 20 years of occupation can earn you total obediance of the native Japanese...

I live in Canada, we have occupied Quebec (French) for almost 250 years and they still hate our guts (and they almost separated a few years back) We give them tons of money(subsidize their government and industry), seats in Parliament and a disproportional amount of Senate seats (and have since Canada was created) .... so saying that the people are totally loyal to you is BS... in my humble opinion...

Until this does get sorted out though I am temporarily withdrawing from RPing...

That's why I only landed a few thousand in the assault. I guess we should both cut our losses and scrat out of this battle. But wait... this is the future eh? whoa... I'm getting a headache just trying to get this all straight.

Well, it is twenty years in the future, but I've always assumed that the RL world is much, much bigger in NS. So, if that were true, then the island would be the size of RL, say, Quebec.

But also, if you think the Sakishimas are small, Maropian Coast is even smaller. The colony is perhaps a few miles in length, and a mile deep into _Taiwan. And its home to over 2 billion people. THAT makes your head hurt.

I guess I do see what's wrong with assimilating the Sakishimas so fast. Usually, I assume that they're assimilated when no one can remember living under another form of government. But that probably doesn't apply here. And in the case of Quebec, that too. I claimed to assimilate Maropian Coast by using emmigration to Bonstock as an excuse for Bonstock's rapid population growth (100 million to 2 billion in what I RPed as 30 or 40 years, more headaches). That was until I figured Maropian Coast's population must be doubling every 2 years or so to account for both Bonstocknian and Maropian population growth. I guess thats possible, though improbable, if Maropian children grew ten times faster then RL counterparts. But how do I explain that? More headaches.

But what might separate the Sakishimas from Quebec is first of all, the Sakishimas have a really small population (200,000 at the most, I think), which probably is smaller because when the islands were "loaned" to the Bonstocknian Rebel government during the Civil War, I guess a lot of Japanese fled to stay Japanese. The Japanese, of course, probably figured the islands would be in Bonstocknian control only until the Rebels invaded and conquered Maropian Coast. Of course, the Bonstocknian government invaded the islands, and "forgot" to give them back.

Really, all the imperialist style wars I've fought in have had one purpose in mind: to find a place on the RL map for Bonstock proper to call home. Technically, we're located in Wysteria, but Wysteria isn't on the RL map. So how do NS nations attack me, or how do I attack them?

I guess in a perfect world, the NS world would have a map, populations would be stable, and I would be content. But really, the NS world itself is wack. Populations grow from 5 million to 2 billion in a year. There is no land, no borders. Its probably a giant ocean world dotted with giant islands which house nations, many times larger then the RL world, as large as Jupiter or even larger. The world population, I think, is somewhere around 30 or 40 trillion, there are over 100,000 individual nations, and a mighty RL world power like the United States is considered average, if not relatively weak.

I only started this RP because I wanted to tell a good story about a man who gets successful beyond belief but then destroys it all by going too far. Let's loose the technicalities and just assume the RP ended there. After all, the government under Burns has no quarrel with you, eh?

Actually, I think I'd be best to withdraw from the Sakishimas. I don't need them, they're only a target, a weak spot in my defenses that distracts from what I really need to defend, Bonstock and Maropian Coast. I'll just figure Bonstock's an island, somewhere in the vast ocean world of NS, and Maropian Coast is attached to an uber-sized Taiwan.

OOC :Hmm... see your point.. I was assuming a more RL scale... but if we don't then that'd work... but probably I'm nowhere strong enough to take the islands anyway.. and since we badly battered your forces at Okinawa its only fair that you blast mine to pieces..

IC: The Hudecian invasion fleet was a mess... nearly a quarter of its ships were at the bottom, and another half we so badly damaged they'd be lucky to make it back to Okinawa.

At least 4 aircraft carriers were sunk, but their presence wouldn't be missed since over 500 aircraft were also missing or destroyed.

The landing forces barely managed to make it off the island but they left almost 5000 dead and 4000 wounded/captured.

Admiral Smetka's flagship also lay at the bottom. The old general refused to leave and went down with the ship.

About 1,000 prisoners taken by the Bonstocknians are led to POW camps. They will be released when the treaty is signed.

"Lung? Victorous? Impossible. I am the one who led us to victory."

"Uh, sir, you were on vacation, remember?"

"Do you want to spend the rest of your life chained to it?"
