Naval Wargame: Unum Veritas vs. Aequatio (onlookers welcome)
Unum Veritas
30-05-2004, 17:27
The nations of Unum Veritas and Aequatio will be engaging in a small-scale, naval wargame for the indeterminate future. The area of the exercise has carefully been selected so as not to interfere in any commercial shipping lanes or airline corridors. All vessels in the area have been warned of the upcoming activities and are urged to stay out of the way in order to prevent any collateral damage. A neutral viewing station will be set up for any foreign visitors who wish to watch the exercises. Those interested should inquire within this thread. The following vessels will be entered into the contest, on behalf of Unum Veritas, under the name Battle Group Echo:
4 Arleigh Burke Class AEGIS Destroyers

Admiral Sarah Pipkins was the highest ranking female officer in the Veritasean Imperial Navy and would have been excited at the chance of commanding Battle Group Echo were it not for the fact that she knew it was given to her only in the hopes that she would fail.
Well, we'll see about that, she thought to herself as she stood on the bridge of the UVS Mystere, the Elessar carrier that was to be the command ship of the group. She smiled to herself as one of the new Ultra Tomcats flew off the catapults, impressed at the sight as always.
"Where are we at now?" Pipkins inquired of her chief subordinates, all of whom had served under her before.
"So far as the air is concerned," the CAG (Commander Air Group) replied, "We're pretty well off. We've got 2 Ultra Toms up, 2 JSF's, and 2 Widows. In the way of support, we've got a CSA up and operating under EMCON, as is the rest of the group. A tanker is currently topping off all of their tanks, so they'll be up for some time."
"Our subs are pulled in relatively close, but with two of them providing a forward picket line," SubCom added.
"Our surface ships are in a tight defensive pattern," Surface Command said, "The ASW frigates are a bit more spread out, but the AEGIS ships are surrounding the rest pretty tightly. Arsenal ships are lagging behind with the Zumwalts, to provide rear-security."
"Good on all counts," Pipkins said with a smile, Now we just need to find the enemy, she thought to herself, before leaving the bridge and heading to the Intel Suite.
Pipkins walked into the room and was taken aback by the stark differences between this room and the rest of the ship. The doorway at the end of the corridor leading to the room was guarded by armed Marines. The actual suite itself was entirely carpeted and large, flat screens covered three of the four walls. When Pipkins walked in, the three screens showed maps of the immediate area and had diagrams of suspected enemy positions.
"Any idea where they're at?" Pipkins inquired upon entering.
"Negative ma'am," one of the intel guys responded, "We could easily know right where they are if one of the AEGIS cruisers went active on its radar, but you have us under EMCON, so we're just sniffing around right now. I'm planning on asking the CAG to send a recon bird up if we can't find them soon."
"No take from any satellite?"
"High Command decided to not let us use them in this exercise; its supposed to simulate a fight with an enemy that has anti-sat capabilities," the intelligence officer responded, And its supposed to make it that much harder for you to succeed, he added silently.
"Okay, well any other suggestions?" Pipkins asked.
"Actually..." one of the lower officers said and went on for a few minutes, highlighting his plan.
"I like it," Pipkins said immediately after, "Its creative and unexpected." A rare thing with the intel weenies, she thought as she headed back to the bridge.

OOC-I'm going to wait and give you a chance to post your first RP post before I continue with the one I've already made.
If that made any sense....

Admiral Higgins, a seasoned veteran officer of several past conflicts, stood on the bridge overlooking the flight deck of the medium-sized carrer, RSS Avalanche, as AWACS E-2 Hawkeyes took off from the catapults along with F-35 escorts armed for a fighter role. Harriers and other F-35 aircraft were being armed with Harpoon ASM to fulfill an attack role below deck. The carrier moved along at a fair speed, led by the submarines and flanked on each side by the Guardian and Valiant destroyers and a handful of corvettes. Higgins tossed his cigar off into the ocean and walked inside the war room onboard. Since the satellites couldn't be used to detect the enemy fleet, he had to rely on his smaller ships, including the untested Phantom Stealth Ships.
"Blast, I hope those vessels are as good as command says they are, or we're going to have a few useless ships out here," he commented as he ordered them to move well ahead of the fleet as reconnaissance for the aircraft and combat vessels. The Vikings would move with the Vanguard cruisers between the Phantoms and the main fleet and move up within firing positions once the enemy had been detected. The hulking Norinco battlecruisers would stay back behind the fleet, to guard the Supply ships and act as an armoured missile platform should they be required to do so.

Halibris wishes to send Secy. of the Navy David Norris and Captain Agatha Erikssen to attend the exercises.
The Domion of Coruna would also like to be spectator to this excercise in hopes that our growing Navy may learn and perhaps participate in such a wargame someday. One delegate will be flown in to each of the two flagships with the consent of the nations concerned.

“So, what do you all think?” Pipkins inquired of her three sub-commanders as they all huddled in her stateroom.
“Its creative,” the surface commander replied, “But it’ll leave our defenses down somewhat.”
“Well, we can cover that with a few extra aircraft,” CAG replied, “In fact, it might even add to the plan if we include some fighter-bombers.” Pipkins smiled to herself at the thinly-disguised attempt at gaining more prestige for the airmen.
“That won’t be necessary, we’re going to test the new cross-linking software along with the effectiveness of the arsenal ships,” Pipkins said, “Any other suggestions? No? Alright, SurCom, make the orders and get the assets moving. CAG, put more fighters aloft. We are still under strict EMCON, got it? Good.” The various commanders stood and left the room. The CAG turned left and headed towards his command post, while SurCom went straight to the CIC, and the other commanders headed to the bridge.
2 hours later
**************
All was silent in the Veritasean ships, except for the usual noise that accompanies ships of war at sea. All the radar screens were virtually blank since the various ships had been banned from using their radar actively by Admiral Pipkins. The crosslinking software was running on all ships, transferring sonar and radar take to each and every ship in the formation. Suddenly officers monitoring electronic outputs noticed a huge bleep about 90 kilometers and then the software kicked in and the radar screens had a clear picture of a formation of unknown ships a few miles to their starboard.
“That radar that just went active looks like one of our SPY radars on an AEGIS cruiser,” one NCO commented to another.
“Yeah, and this formation must be our ‘enemy’ for the engagement; whoever thought up this plan was pretty clever,” the other responded.
“Agreed, whoa! Vampire! Vampire! We have multiple launches from...from behind us, sir,” the first NCO reported to the officer-of-the-deck.
“Yes Chief,” the officer replied somewhat smugly, “Pipkins sent the destroyer over there so that it could light up its radar without giving our position away. The radar take was then crosslinked to all ships, but especially the arsenal ships. Now the arsenals are showing what they do with a good radar picture.” The chief chuckled before going on as his duty required,
“Okay, I’ve got a total of what looks to be 15 Tomahawks and 15 BrahMos cruise missiles headed towards the suspected enemy position.”
“Good Chief, keep track of the developments for me,” the officer said.

A young lieutenant rushed into the war room and quickly saluted Admiral Higgins, "Sir, they fell for it... the Hawkeye aircraft projected our radar signatures far ahead of our main fleet, they fired off several cruise missiles into the open ocean thinking they were hitting us."
The admiral looked up and pondered for a moment, "All right, we won't have a lot of time to react, that single ship that's brought its radar up is our only target and will obviously pick up our position unless we take it out quickly... commander, what can we fire at it that won't give away the position of the main fleet?"
"The Phantom Stealth vessels have Tomahawk missiles, I believe they would be our best chance at destroying the enemy ship."
"Very well, have them launch missiles at the target and have the Hawkeyes switch to passive detection, see if we can find anymore of that ship's friends out there."
Four of the Phantom Stealth ships prepared their vertical launchers with Tomahawk missiles and fired them off against the only target, a lone UV destroyer.

OOC- I'm really not trying to be one of those aggravating people who argues over every little technical detail, but I don't think the Hawkeye thing is actually possible. I mean, even if you've modified the aircraft to be able to project radar signatures, if my ship went active on its radar then it could only see things that were really there. I mean, if you had decoys then it would see those, but it would also see your real ships (except, perhaps, the stealthy ones), and I don't think it would see any radar projections. If my radar was in passive, then it would pick up the emissions from your projections, but the second it goes active, it would only see real targets.
BTW: I'm going to be gone until next Thursday/Friday, so it might be a little while before I can reply.
OOC: Just a thought. Wouldn't that kind of electronic warfare be better conducted by Prowlers? Just a thought. I don't know much abvout this stuff yet.

Prowlers are for jamming and ELINT, they wouldn't have replaced what my destroyer did, and I'm still wondering about the whole Hawkeye thing.
