In a surprise move this morning after the release of scientific data collected by several neighbouring nations, An Loc National Lab director Marion Cu'ong announced that Nuevo Kowloon's anti-nuclear policy has been abandoned, and that a successful series of underground tests on a thermonuclear weapon have already been completed.

International Observers from several groups, including Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, and the Nuclear Freeze movement have already lodged protests with the Government for developing what one observer called "A weapon of Horror".

Doctor Cu'ong is a controversial figure, having left the Navy Air lab five years ago after an alleged dispute with several colleagues in her department.

It is believed that Dr. Cu'ong, one of the brightest products of the "Uniform to Lab-Coat" programme left the Navy Research Labs in a dispute over funding and research practices.

Dr. Cu'ong is well-known in the Indochinese Scientific community as a booster of the "Atoms for Peace" and "Missile Shield" concepts. Her latest announcement contained elements of both:

"...after the unprovoked attack on our lands by Aust, and even before the rubble had been completely cleared, I began working on a defense against future threats from Ballistic Missiles. Flashlight is the first step in that process... the ....system is already nearly fully deployed... additional layers will be put into place next year. Flashlight, at its base, is a Nuclear-pumped X-Ray laser system, capable of focusing a beam in low-orbit at an approaching warhead swarm and destroying them. It has anti-sattelite capability, and other, classified, traits. Since the bombs are fired in low-orbit, there is no danger of fallout, and given that they are based on the 'Classical Super' design first pioneered by Edward Teller of the United States four generations ago, the energy release is... significant... the system itself is well-concealed... and mobile."

Dr. Cu'ong also mentioned the previous attempts at missile defense, publicly deriding the "Hammer Project" as a waste of taxpayer monies that failed to achieve its goal.
