AK 47
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/e/e4/Ak47.jpg
The selector lever is a large lever on the right side, easy to manipulate with mittens under arctic conditions.

The highest position of the selector lever is safe. Safe prevents trigger movement and cocking. In many models, this position is unmarked. International weapons may place a "0" in this position.

The bottom position is single-shot. On Russian weapons this is marked "ОД" in Cyrillic, from ОДин (one). International weapons may have a "1" or a single dot.

The middle position is full automatic. On Russian weapons this is marked with "АВ" in Cyrillic, from АВтомат (automatic). International weapons have an infinity-sign or multiple dots in this position.

Classic AK-series have a cycle rate of 600RPM. Newer versions have delayed automatic sears that cycle at 300RPM.

The standard flip-up iron sight is calibrated with each numeral indicating in hundreds of meters. It is released by squeezing the two buttons on the back end. The standard calibration of the flipped-down sight is 50 meters, the normal minimal distance for aimed fire. Distances below this range are usually handled with instinctive fire. For night fighting, Russian models have a flip-up luminous dot, also calibrated at 50m. The sights are one of the most heavily-criticized feature of the rifle, being both farther from the eye than many common rifle sights, and less accurate than peep-sights, such as those found on the M16 rifles.

The magazine release is in front of the trigger guard. The trigger guard is very large, to permit gloved fingers.

A sling is provided for accurate aimed fire. It should wrap around the left forearm.

Models for paratroopers, horse troops and mechanized troops have folding stocks. Most fold sideways, but a few fold forward over the pistol grip to make submachine guns.

Bullpup models exist, in which a shoulder pad is bolted onto the back of the receiver, and the trigger is moved up to the front of the barrel. These weigh less because they have no stock, yet they still have full-length barrels.

Some models include an integral folding bayonet.

Some models include a gas valve on the forward gas port (above the barrel) to permit firing grenades. Sometimes the valve is controlled by flipping a special "grenade sight" up into position.

Some makes of removable bayonets can attach to their scabbards to form a scissors-style barbed-wire cutter.

The barrel and chamber are chromium-plated, to resist corrosion, but cleaning after every firing is recommended. Most military ammunition uses corrosive primers.

A cleaning rod is under the barrel. It bends slightly for removal. In standard AKs, cleaning patches and a metal bottle of oil and solvent are in compartments in the shoulder-pad of the stock.

To field strip, release the magazine catch, remove the magazine, and cock the rifle, holding the left hand ready over the receiver to catch any ejected cartridge. Release the catch on the right side of the rear sight. Push the piston assembly cover forward, detaching it from the rear receiver. Lift it and then pull it backwards. Remove the piston assembly and bolt. Clean as needed, with special attention to the barrel, gas hole and gas piston. Oil slightly and reassemble. Before inserting the magazine, press the trigger to release the spring tension.

Ballistics
The standard AK-47 or AKM fires a 7.62x39mm round with a muzzle velocity of 710 m/s. Muzzle energy is 2,970 joules. Cartridge length is 38.6mm, weight is 18.21g. Projectile weight is 7.91g.

The new model AK-74 fires a 5.45x39mm round with a muzzle velocity of 900 m/s. Muzzle energy is 1,385 joules. The cartridge weight is 10.75g. Projectile weight is 3.42g.

Both bullets are full metal jacket designs. The outer plating is copper and zinc. The shell is steel. There's an inner layer of soft lead, with a core that's a steel penetrator. There is a bubble in the nose.

When shot into 10% ballistic gelatin at 4C, the bullets always tumble. X-ray examinations of ten bullets showed that the lead invariably shifts into the bubble in the nose, possibly unbalancing the bullet.

With the 5.45mm bullet, the tumbling produced a maximum wound expansion twice at 10 and 40cm of depth. With the 7.62mm bullet, the maximum wound expansion occurred at approximately 30 and 40 cm. 40cm is the average thickness of a human trunk.

Some people have said that the Russians were concerned about the lower energies of the assault-rifle bullets and designed them to cause more damage than might otherwise occur.

The rate of fire is between 300 and 600 rounds per minute. Later models have modifications to the trigger assembly and bolt to fire more slowly. This helps to make the weapon more controllable and waste less ammunition. This may help reduce logistic requirements.

M16 Assault Rifle
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/a/a5/M16.jpg
The M16 is one of a family of related weapons designed by Eugene Stoner of Armalite Systems, formerly of Costa Mesa, California. Others include a squad automatic weapon and the AR-10, a relatively rare 7.62 x 51 mm NATO rifle that recently returned to production.

A major goal of the design was to use (then) modern materials and manufacturing processes to make a lightweight rifle with lightweight ammunition, to replace the heavy M14 rifle that was standard issue until 1962.

The M16 is an ergonomic, angular, modernistic and unusually lightweight rifle (originally 3.2kg, compare to 5kg for an AK47). It has a pistol grip, which aids intuitive pointing. The sights allow the user to dial in the range to the target without other adjustments.

The M16 is made of aluminum and plastics, except for the steel barrel and parts of the action. Early models were especially lightweight at 3.2 kg (~7.5 lbs), about 30% less than older 7.62 mm "battle rifles" of the 1950s and 1960s. New models weigh more (~8.5 lbs) because of the "heavy" barrel used to increase accuracy. The gun is 40 inches in length. Stoner experimented with titanium barrels and receiver, but failed to achieve reliable operation.

One distinctive ergonomic feature is a plastic or metal stock directly behind the action, which contains a recoil spring that serves the dual function of operating spring and recoil buffer.

The direct-back stock and spring act to reduce muzzle rise, especially during automatic fire. As a result, most users find the M16 type rifle easy to use. In particular, multiple-round bursts cause much less muzzle-lift, so the rifle is very controllable. Because recoil does not significantly shift the point of aim, user fatigue is reduced. This reduction in recoil coincided well with the entry of women into the Army.

Another distinctive ergonomic feature is that the main sight is in the top of a carry handle on top of the receiver. This means that the user need not turn the head sideways to sight the rifle. The carry handle is also a popular feature. Newer models have a "flattop" upper receiver to which the user can attach either a conventional carry handle/sighting system or numerous optical devices such as night vision scopes.

The action is gas-operated, cocked by gases from a small hole in the barrel. The M16 design has a uniquely simple "direct drive" gas system, which also saves weight. Hot gases from the barrel vent directly into the receiver to push the bolt carrier rearward, eliminating the need for a traditional operating rod and spring assembly. While this reduces the number of moving parts and results in a simpler design, authorities differ about whether the design is more reliable than earlier service rifles. Maintenance can be tricky. Official authorities say that modern versions of the M16A2 with modern ammunition are very reliable.

A forward assist lever (to manually close the action in the event of a failure to feed) was omitted from the earliest models to prevent entry of dirt, but it is included on the modern models along with a spring loaded dust cover.

The bullet is small caliber, 5.56 mm (0.223 in), and often fragments when it strikes flesh. The combination of high velocity and a fragile small bullet is more likely to cause incapacitating injuries than death by hydrostatic shock. The relatively small bullet drifts more than heavier bullets at long ranges, but users can be trained to compensate.

M4 Carbine
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/b/b5/RifleM4-wGrip-Small.jpg
The M4/M4A1 5.56mm Carbine is a gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, selective rate, shoulder fired weapon with a collapsible stock. A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle with a 36 cm barrel, the M4A1 provides the individual soldier operating in close quarters the capability to engage targets at extended range with accurate, lethal fire. The original M4 Carbine had "semi" and three round burst fire modes, while the M4A1 has "semi" and "auto" but no three round burst. The M4A1 Carbine achieves over 80% commonality with the M16A2 Rifle and was intended to replace M3 .45 caliber submachine guns and selected M9 pistols and M16 rifle series (though this plan may be changed with the development of the XM29 OICW and the XM8 Carbine with most Army units.) It is capable of mounting the M203 Grenade Launcher.

Some features compared to a full length M16A2 rifle include:

* Compact size
* Shorter barrel
* Collapsable butt-stock
* Higher rate of fire
* Selective full-automatic rather than three shot bursts (M4A1)

However, there have been some criticisms of the carbine, such as lower bullet velocities due to the shorter barrel, additional stress on parts because of the shorter gas system, and a tendency to overheat faster than the M16A2. To solve the problem of lower bullet velocities a new 5.56mm caliber cartridge with more gunpowder was introduced.

Accessories
Like all the variants of the M16 assault rifle, the M4 Carbine and the M4A1 Carbine can be fitted with many accessories such as night vision devices, laser pointers, scopes, bipods and the M203 grenade launcher.

AN 94
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/2/25/AN94.jpg
Replacement for the AK series of rifles in the Russian infantry.
It is chambered in the same 5.45x39mm cartridge as the AK-74, and it too utilizes a rotating bolt to lock the action. This is where the similarities end. When the bolt-carrier is driven backwards by the force of the gas from the cartridge, a pulley activates a cartridge-feeding device. This mechanism allows a much higher rate of fire than would otherwise be possible. The high rate of fire (1800rpm) is employed in two-round bursts. These form the first two shots on fully-automatic fire. This feature increases the probability of hitting the target, because the bullets leave the firearm before recoil can affect the shooter's point-of-aim.

The rear peep sight is a dramatic improvement over the standard Kalashnikov notch and post. The muzzle brake is very effective, and much less harsh on the ears than the AK-74's muzzle brake. The recoil on full-auto fire has been described as a gentle, constant push, rather than a series of sharp jabs as in most firearms.

M249 SAW
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/2/2b/M249saw.jpg
The FN Minimi / M249 SAW fires NATO 5.56mm rounds and weighs 6.8 kg. It is an air cooled, gas operated, belt fed, automatic weapon. The Minimi is operated using conventional gas action with the gas piston located below the barrel, and the barrel is locked using the traditional rotary bolt. The barrel is quick-detachable, and has a carrying handle attached to it, to help for quick replacement procedure. The M249 has an alternative feed system, which allows to use disintegrating metallic belts as a primary feed option, or M16-type box magazines as a back-up feed option. The belt is fed using the top feed unit, the magazines are inserted through the magazine port, located at the left side of the receiver and angled down. The Flip-up dust cover closes the magazine port when it is not in use, serving also as a belt guide. When magazine is in place, this cover raises up and closes the belt-way to avoid dual feeds and jams. Since the belt feed uses additional power to pull the belt through the gun, the rate of fire with the belt is somewhat slower (~ 750 rpm) than the rate of fire with magazine feed (~ 1000 rpm). The latest SPW and Mk.46 mod.0 versions of the Minimi have no magazine feed module as a weight-saving measure. The belts are fed from special 200 rounds plastic boxes that can be clipped beneath the receiver. All Minimi versions fire from open bolt to ensure optimal barrel cooling between bursts.

The folding bipod is mounded under the gas chamber, and the gun has provisions for tripod or vehicle mountings. The open sights are standard, with the availability of wide variety of optical and night sights for SPW and Mk.46 versions with Picatinny rails.

MP5
http://en.wikipedia.org/upload/f/f4/HKMP5.jpg
The Heckler und Koch MP5 is one of the most well-known and widely used submachine guns in the world. The MP5 was designed for reliability, ease of handling, and simple maintenance. It is currently in use by military and law enforcement units in more than fifty nations. The MP5 is essentially a scaled down derivative of HK's earlier G3 assault rifle. MP5s operate using the same delayed blowback action, roller-locked bolt system employed in the G3. This mechanism was originally developed by the earlier German weapons designer Mauser Werkes during WWII. All MP5 variants are fed by either 15, 30, or 40 round curved box-type magazines or it can be specially fitted with high-capacity, third-party manufactured drum magazines.

Like most H&K weapons the trigger assembly is completely replaceable, and includes fully automatic, 4, 3, and 2-round burst, single shot, and safe positions in various combinations. MP5s were long chambered for the 9x19mm parabellum round commonly used in pistols. In the late 1990s more powerful .40 S&W and Bren 10mm versions were introduced, but soon phased out in favor of the new UMP submachine gun.
