The Prime Minister’s Office-Government House, Navarre, The Freethinkers

Prime Minister Ted Barham sat watching the clock tick slowly on his wall. Dawn had come, and once again he had spent the night in the functional splendour of his office, signing requisition slips and policy papers and watching about fourteen dozen news channels and taking thirty calls from various leaders and diplomats and god knows who else.

His desk was a labyrinth of memos, notes, reports, a laptop and family photo somewhere beneath it all and an upturned cup of coffee whose contents were now dribbling over the edge of the gold-lined desk. Birds could be heard heralding morning outside, from beyond the office blinds out in the gardens that stretched all the way down to the Navarre River. It would be beautiful, Barham thought.

Then at precisely 7 am, everything changed.

Barham never fully understood what happened. Two men, in plain military fatigues, unopposed, walked into his office. That didn’t happen. Not normally. No one walked in here without permission. He was about to enquire as to what they were doing when a pistol was raised and fired. The shot seemed foreign to Barham, and he never felt the round hit him. His lungs expanded but never contracted. A little bubble of blood formed on Barham’s lower lip, then burst, letting the blood trickle down to his sweat-soaked shirt. He didn’t move as his head slowly fell into his chest, leaving him sitting there like he was fast asleep.

The two intruders turned and walked out of the office without a second glance. They went out the front door, nodding to the two door guards, and walked swiftly down the corridor leading to the lobby. One or two more silenced shots were faintly heard, along with a couple of muffled cries, and within a few minutes the entire civilian head of government within the Freethinkers was ruthlessly and completely wiped out.

In the middle of the executive decapitation, the two men broke off from each other, one going downstairs, and the other to the balcony that went beyond the edge of the corridor at its end. Taking a mobile phone from his pocket and bringing it to his ear after typing an obscure number, the soldier said the words that confirmed a new dark age for the Freethinker nation.

“Miller, it is done.”

Linda Barham flipped the eggs in the frying pan in front of her, humming to herself and silently cursing her husband for staying at the office all night. Her mind worried about that, about the stress levels and what it did to your health. It couldn’t be good for him, and it wasn’t very good for her or the kids either.

Out at the bottom of the driveway, her eyes caught the Pathfinder guards walking slowly up the drive towards the house. It looked strange to her, usually the guards kept to the outside of the Prime Ministerial home, watching but not intruding on the family life of the country’s leader. Four of them however, were now advancing up the drive, and one of them was pointing his black gloved hand at her through the kitchen window. Two of the others stopped and turned their heads up, looking at her, whilst the forth turned right round and pointed his rifle towards the bottom of the driveway.

The three Pathfinders looking at Linda raised their rifles at her. Linda dropped the frying pan, and, perhaps as an instinct from her conscription many years ago, dropped to the floor as the glass in front of her exploded and the woodwork panelling that decorated the kitchen exploded into splinters. Pictures and ornaments shattered as Linda yelled for her kids. She trembled on her hands and knees, which were now cut with glass, and crawled slowly towards the door. The screams of her kids came from upstairs. She cried, the pain in her limbs and in her ears as her home practically disintegrated around her was too much.

Then the sound of gunfire died away as a huge engine roared into life. Something slow and heavy was moving up the driveway, mechanical groans and whirls filling the air, and Linda could only guess what it was.

Through the doorway, she saw the lounge disappear underneath an orange blaze, and she screamed. Heavier gunfire ripped through the heavy woodwork and even the armoured front door. She couldn’t move, she started to cry, the yells of her kids lost in the sounds of battle.

Then there was a roar that shook the entire house, followed a huge explosion that nearly lifted Linda to her feet. The mechanical roaring and machine gun fire had stopped, leaving just the crinkling sounds of debris collapsing on it self. Crying came from upstairs, and Linda sighed with relief as her two kids appeared, both young boys, one six, one four, the younger one clutching his toy bear and crying into it.

Linda stared at them trying hard to smile. She slowly got up and beckoned them to come down, which they did, running the last few steps into her arms.

Then another engine was heard, and Linda looked around in fear, grabbing her children close. Big diesels, but no way near the size of the previous vehicle, were driving up the path, stopping just outside the front door. Doors opened, and she heard at least six people get out. A cry of ‘Check the place’ went out. The footsteps moved towards the front door. Weapons were cocked and magazines were loaded. Linda begged her kids to be quiet as she closed her own eyes. She prayed for it to be quick.

“Are you alright Ma’am?”

She opened them to see a woman in the uniform of the National Intelligence Organisation’s Special Operations Unit staring down at her with a worried gaze. Her hand rested on Linda’s shoulder in a firm but comforting grip. The Prime Minister’s wife began to speak…

“What….who…where’s Theo?”

“No time Ma’am, we need to get you out of here ASAP.” And with that and with considerable strength too, the intelligence officer lifted Linda up and carried her outside to a pair of jeeps guard by several men in a similar black uniform to the officer. In the background lay the bombed out wreckage of a Spitfire tank, smouldering on the lawn, with the corpses of the Pathfinders spread around it.

She was loaded into the first jeep along with her kids. The officer jumped in with her, along with a guard who took up the driver’s position. The rest of the soldiers jumped into the second vehicle. The two jeeps shot round the driveway and down onto the main road, bypassing several more burnt out military –and civilian- vehicles. Behind them, Navarre sat under a pillar of smoke.

They told Linda as best they could what had happened. The military, or some parts of it, had committed a coup d’etat, leaving the administration in disarray and no one with any clue what was happening. Some units remained loyal to the government, but many had no idea who was fighting who and had simply sided into the chain of command. No one had total control of anything, and no one knew what was going to come as the two jeeps headed deeper in country.

Having gotten the confirmation that the 'Coup d'etat' was underway as planned, Miller got ready to issue a declaration moving armed forces into Navarre to protect Doujinshi Corporation interests. Several Battlefleets already were already conducting patrols in a manor as to not arouse suspicion but to allow Doujin to quickly enter Freethinkers when the plan went through.

Freethinker Ground Forces GHQ, 20 miles SW of Navarre

“Was it successful?” Asked one of the shadows occupying the bunker, sliding back on a reclined chair in the darkened room, puffing on a cigar non-chantilly, staring at the other figure opposite him. His gravely voice added to the tense atmosphere, indicating neither pleasure nor anger. The second figure spoke quickly.

“We eliminated most of the civilian leaders, and have most of the navy, air force, and army under our control. The Peacekeeper Corp is an irrelevance at this stage, and they are currently too tied up with helping our citizens handle the casualties. The intelligence services seemed to have been on to us though, and nothing but a few low-level agents have either turned to us or been eliminated.”

“I see,” said the first figure, putting the cigar down and looking directly at the man opposite him. The stare was palpable even in the non-existent light. The second figure breathed heavily for a moment, but continued talking.

“We have been unsuccessful in a few endeavours. The NIO were successful in locking down our terrestrial nuclear silos, at least temporarily, by activating the safeguards designed for just such an occasion as this. However, forces under our command do control most of the ABM units scattered around the country, as well as the three active SSBNs currently out on patrol, giving us a strategic and sub-strategic nuclear capability. Their launch codes were not disabled.” There was no response at first. The first figure sat motionless, then came out with the question the second figure obviously feared.

“And the Prime Minister's wife was eliminated?”

“I'm afraid not…we were compromised by an unknown element of the NIO…we…” But there no more words. A near inaudible slide of metal, and the second figure slumped forward, noisily crashing into the table before hitting the concrete floor with a sickening crunch. The first figure rose, and the lights went on. On the floor, the man who had shot the Prime Minister lay askew, his eyes wide with fear, scarlet blood dripping from a fleshy, burnt-tinged hole right above his heart. The first surveyed the body, an expressionless, craggy face seemingly untouched by the sight of the man he had just shot. He turned, talking to no one.

“There is no failure for the Pathfinders….”

The Scarlet Palace was abustle, as aide after aide rushed into the Imperator's chamber. With Parliament still unilaterally suspended, Erik von Blatterschplitt was absolute ruler of the Scarlet Empire. Since the first reports had come in from intelligence services and the Freethinker Embassy, little had been learned of the situation. The Freethinker ambassador to Edolia had been offered safe-haven, but as of yet the Scarlet Palace had not receieved an answer. Inside his office, the Imperator was -as usual- working hard. He had already read through some hundred pages of reports on the matter and was utterly frustrated by the lack of substantive information.
"Goddamnit. Another ally going down the drain. What is it about Haven these last few weeks?"
"I don't know sir," Arnold von Struff, head aide to the Imperator shook his head. "Edolia is as strong as ever."
"Stronger." The Imperator turned his attention back to his report.
Crisis after crisis had rockeld the region in the past few weeks. A governmental shake-up in Phyrric had overthrown the Republic, a coup in The Island States had eliminated a corrupt President -that was good- Doujin's government had gone crazy, Ilek-Vaad abandoned their allies, Lietuveska was invaded and taken over by Communists -good again-... All this was happening in the back-drop of the war with Allanea, which had already killed some ten million people.
And now The Freethinkers were going nuts.
Haven was in trouble.

Executive Building, nearby the Kremlin

A senior officer of the HFIA rushed through the maze of cubicles and hallways to the Commisar of Foreign Intelligence's office. He passed by the Eye Room, the walls of the room were filled with monitors from the extensive Hattian spy satellite system, monitoring every country that possibly posed a threat to the SSRH. As he approached the door, he nodded at the guard, who snapped to attention. He pushed open the door and approached the very messy desk in the center of the room.

The Commisar looked up from one of the obscure forms that allowed the bueraucracy that was the Hattian government to function. "Yes..." The officer nodded and handed the Commisar a piece of paper.

After a few minutes of reading it the Commisar once again looked up. "Interesting, I'll notify the Prime Minister, we are going to watch this unfold. We don't want the government of a friendly nation to be overthrown, generally..." The officer cracked a smile. "Head to the airport, there will be a small VTOL aircraft there, head over to the Freethinkers, we'll get one of our other agents to take it out. Once you are there, await for your orders. And don't forget to tell Dimitry to come along..." The officer saluted and headed out the door.

The officer (Whose name is Agent Gyorgy Haton Zhukov) stopped at Dimitry Severnaya Andropov's (His partner) house. A few seconds after knocking at the door, the man answered. Zhukov smiled, "Evandal, we've got some business to attend to in the Freethinkers." Dimitry nodded and walked out to the car.

A few minutes later, the small aircraft streaked off towards the Freethinkers flying low...

Special Forces Colonel John Stanley looked out over the horizon, the amphibious assault group still an hour from Freethinker's territorial waters. One of his squadmates came up to him, handing him a cigarette and a lighter. "Thanks Bill," Stanley said as he lit up, handing the lighter back to the lieutenant. "What do you think we're in for?"

"A country in turmoil, sir," the Lieutenant replied. "They may see us coming in and try to stop us quickly, so we have to get our asses in the boats fast, get ashore fast, then disappear into the woods. Then the party really starts, eh Colonel?" The Colonel just nodded, puffing on his cigarette as he awaited their rubber boat entry.

Colonel Stanley moved to the back of the Amphibious Assault Ship "John T. Robinson", where the rest of the 2,000 men had gathered with their gear. "All right men, over the side! Let's go!" The men checked behind them to make sure no other ships were directly behind them before they jumped off the back, parachutes carrying them into the water. As soon as they hit the water softly, they found the rubber boats that were also chucked off the back of the boat.

20,000 men were now in the water, crawling their way into their boats (as they had done in countless training scenarioes, including the dreadful "Robinson Landing", where their entire division has to fight off three infantry divisions and one armored division. They knew they were in good hands, their Colonel won that unbeatable scenario. The units under his command in training captured an entire armored column (by capturing the command tank and ordering the rest, which were low on ammo, into a perfect capture spot without the simulated enemy ever knowing).

The boats had a range of 10 miles, more than enough to carry them through the Freethinker's territorial waters and onto the beach. If all else failed, they would use oars and paddle their way ashore. Satellite reports on the Colonel's ship showed the beaches were prime for a landing. If anything, they could abort, go back to sea and paddle to one of the uninhabited reaches and filter over the border.

Stanley manned the motor on his boat, thinking that this wasn't the hard part. They had to move a mile inland before they could reach a forest, and between them and there were civlians (probably willing to turn them in to the first Freethinker patrol). He had ordered the first squad to get around a town to blow the utility poles and to destroy the local telephone exchange. "Sir," the Lieutenant that Stanley had talked to earlier began. "How bad is this going to get?"

"Well, Lieutenant, it's going to get pretty bad out there," Stanley started. "We're going to spread out for a few days, tearing up the countryside and turning it into a very bad place for enemy infantry and tanks in the countryside. Then we're going to take several small towns, find some friendlies, and form a resistance. Our primary objective is to restore democracy, but we're also ordered to begin making the locals Socialist/Communist. Then they might join the Union that is being planned, but that's politics, and war has no place for it. Keep a lookout for the shore, then use your night vision and see if you can see any patrols."

"Yes, sir!"

Archangel Task Force - Navarre
The ships silently entered into formation in and around Navarre. Large cargo vessels docked, and began unloading their many essential supplies. The night was early, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. In the distance, an explosion could be heard as the rebels and the NIO fought battles. Navarre was a mess, the sky constantly being lit up with munitions fire and explosions.

Admiral Carr sat in his state-room aboard the DN Runa, looking at maps of Navarre. He was one of the few people who knew of Emperor Miller's manipulation of the Pathfinders, and was eager to get this underway. With him was multiple divisions, who have been preparing for the past couple years for urban combat.

Carr stood up, and walked across the room and picked up a special phone that had a 512-bit matrix making it one of the most secure-if not the most secure- phone on the planet. On the other end, picked up Emperor Miller himself.

"Sir, we are ready. Proceed?"

"Aye, secure Navarre. Treat the Pathfinders like the are rebel revolutionaries - kill them all."

"Understood, sir."

He put down the phone and turned around. Walking across his large stateroom he picked up a couple binders and proceeded to the Operations Room, where he would control the Naval Assets in the Task Force.

A phone call was made by Emperor Miller, and planes took off from Doujin - planes which will ferry several mechanized / armoured divisions to Freethinkers. Temporary basis were being made, equipment was brought in to bunker down Navarre and end all hostilities in it.

IC: Northwest Coast - Freethinker Haven Sector

Stanley had just gotten done slashing his boat and letting his subordinates quickly bury it before they began to run off. In the green-lit night vision display, the forests could be seen in the distance. "We're a mile off-target," he said as he tried to fight his nicotene craving until the next day (the cigarette butt could give away their past and present position, lit or not).

The troops ran off, all of them following orders from their officers (lieutenants, captains, majors, or the Colonel himself). They could see the lit-up homes in the countryside, their families lying down to bed. It was a piece of cake... no tanks, no sizeable infantry forces... yet. The amphibious group was far gone by now, steaming back to Freeport. If they are captured or discovered as Island States troops, it could lead to a shooting war between allies (in a sense, but not so as the Freethinker military is not under friendly control). If that happened, there would be four carrier groups and all eight amphibious groups sitting offshore, unloading marines and offering air support in a day. Ofcourse, they had to survive long enough to see it.

The air was hot and sticky, tiring the men and women out on their long sprint to safety. Like turtles scrambing off the beach, the troops reached the forest, but didn't stop until they were 100 yards deep into it. Stanley, in his early 30s, had trouble keeping up with the younger soldiers. It was going to be a long operation...

20 Miles W of Pebble Landing

The small aircraft streaked over the water as it neared the Freethinker coast. Once over land, they set down and concealed the aircraft in foliage and some camo netting. Once the agents finished this, they found a small car that another agent had left for them. They climbed in and waited for more orders.

Agent Zhukov pulled a large magazine out of his pack and put it into his HBR-5S as he waited...
