Consul Addresses the Nation

Eredron
15-05-2004, 03:05
The rotunda of the Senate Chambers echoed with the subdued discussion of the five hundred gathered senators, and hundreds of foreign dignitaries, businessmen and news crew. The rows of plush, crimson seats had long since been filled, leaving the rest to stand in the back tiers. At three minutes to the hour, a trim man, dressed in a crisp uniform, moved from his place at the end of the row of Eredronian flags, and approached the center lectern. Standing to the side of the podium, he presided solemly as those gathered pledged their allegiance to the Republic, ending it with a crisp salute.

"Ladies and gentleman, the Consul of the Republic."

As tradition and ceremony dictated, all in attendance remained standing, not breathing a word for fear of being removed for contempt, as a robust-looking man appeared, striding confidently onto the elevated platform in the center of the Chamber. Again, as tradition dictated, the Consul first met the salutes of the fifteen soldiers of the Senate Guard. He then stood face to face with the Chief of the Guard. They spoke but briefly. The Chief Guardsmen delivered the duties of presiding over to the Consul, who then stepped behind the podium. The ceremony had ended, and he could now begin his address.

"Ladies and gentlemen, since the founding of this great country, many men have stood here, in my place..and delivered words of encouragement, words of solace. They have delivered accounts of wars, of economic distress, of political activities.

Tonight I deliver an account of a most serious nature.

We face a troubled world; we lived in distressing times and alarming circumstances. Nations, alliances, entire continents are embroiled in open war. Economies have plummeted, governments have been overthrown as the seeds of revolution planted long ago, have finally come to fruition. We have seen terrorism on a scale never before imagined, of unprecedented magnitude...indeed, we have seen first hand what great evils these thugs and terrorists are capable of.

Yet even as we acknowledge the terrible evil, the terrible damage, these terrorists and revolutionaries and regimes are capable of inflicting, we remember the great determination and iron will displayed by Eredron, and by the free peoples of the world. In the aftermath of the terror attacks that shook this nation, the people of Eredron overcame. We have adopted an active policy of combating terror, a policy that will be expanded and clarified tonight.

In the past months, we have seen overwhelming success in our tactics. Over seven hundred dissidents, revolutionaries, terrorists and other enemies have been detained or otherwise faced their rendezvous with justice.

To this date, we have met the danger posed by terrorists in nations and regions across the world. The people of Somalia have been given an opportunity at freedom. Countless children have been delivered from the hands of starvation, a fate inflicted upon them by terrorist organizations who showed no reluctance in employing their brutal tactics of subjugation.

As I speak, the brave men and women of Eredron are engaged in the active defense of democracy in Mauritius, deployed against the threat posed by international terrorist organizations, and foreign governments.

But for all that we have done, there is much progress to be made. To this end, I have delivered to the Senate a detailed change in foreign and domestic policy for the Eredron government, and proposed sweeping changes of which I will publicly announce.

For the purposes of strengthening and reinforcing our campaign against terror, I have announced an increase to the military budget of 600 billion Marks; an additional seventy billion to Eredron intelligence agencies; an increase of thirty billion to law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, I have taken measures to strengthen our armed forces by two million personnel over the next two years, while at the same time improving Eredron's ability to respond to situations around the world by establishing international military bases. These measures will in turn enhance our ability to carry out my next policy.

I ask the Senate, and the people of Eredron, to support me in condemning all governments, organizations and individuals who support or condone terrorism, dictatorial oppression, or other tactics contrary to democracy and freedom. Such nations pose a clear and present danger to the Republic. As such, we reserve the right to launch preemptive strikes to protect our interests.

Concurrent with this policy is Directive 505, which I have signed into law this evening. All economic and financial accounts in Eredron held by those who support the aforementioned terror and despotism shall be frozen and seized without delay.

It has often been said knowledge is power. If this is indeed true, I intend to make Eredron a juggernaut. Through a budget increase of fifty billion, I have instructed the Eredron space agency to increase our satellite presence by two dozen, providing Eredron with the latest intelligence around the world. Our intelligence agencies must never lack when it comes to matters of national security.

On this, and on all matters, Eredron cannot fail, Eredron will not fail. Ladies and gentlemen, may fate shine upon this great country."
