Slavery...Is it really a bad idea?

I wish to set up a conference of sorts, to discuss the topic, slavery. I myself find it to be...interesting. I don't mean that it is right or wrong, I'm just saying that someday, pro slavery and anti-slavery nations should discuss this topic together (this may have already been done).

This is of course open to all. I'm not selling slaves here, so don't declare war on me, but I'm not saying I haven't done it before. I just wish to discuss the issue here. Those who wish to discuss the topic, please send a representative to my nation. (I don't have any slaves, so don't send an army here)

Slaves are a pretty impracticle work force, they would be poorly motivated and almost certainly lack the skills necessary to perform high-tech work. Would you really want a slave to work on an aircraft part worth over a million dollars? Certainly not.

In low-skill fields, it is probably more economical to simply hire people. You can hire a day-laborer for $ 40, I can't imagine it would be much cheaper to feed, shelter, and clothe a slave. Nevermind the additional resources you would have to spend providing extra security (to prevent sabotage and escapes).

Curiously, World War III was fought over the same subject.

Slavery is economically impractical for an industrialized nation; it also is a fundamental violation of human rights of free expression, free association, and freedom of movement. I will always be opposed to slavery in all its forms.

/capitalism isn't slavery, Karl Marx be damned

Simply, yes, it is. Every government seeks to achieve one or a combination of three goals:
1) Create a contented citizenry.
2) Provide a stable government so that the country can function.
3) Consolidate power in a central figure.

With slavery, you will never have a contented citizenry, as there arises a legal division of classes. While the wealthy may be happy, there will always be a large number of discontented people who have little and can see little prospect of improvement. Motivation, creativity, and productivity thereby goes down. Slaves are loathe to work, and slave-owners are loathe to work, as well, instead happy with letting their slaves do the most of the work.
With a discontented people, you light the match for rebellion...violent rebellion. This is hardly stable.
With rebellion, you hardly hope to keep your position for long. :?

In short, SLAVERY=BAD!!!
