Slavery Conference - All Anti-Slavery Nations Welcome

Praetonia
09-05-2004, 20:34
Due to the recent upsurge in slave trading nations, the Praetonian Government has decided to set up a conference on the issue to be hosted within Praetonia itself. Any anti-slavery nation is welcome to attend, and we hope that by the end of the conference we will have a well thought out plan of action with which to combat slavery.

Recently Praetonia has been buying and freeing slaves to save them from the terrible life that they may have otherwise led, however this is only a short-term patch to a large problem. This sort of behavior will only encourage slave-trading nations to enslave and sell more people. For this reason we set up this confernce, to find a way to strike the killing blow against slavery, before it becomes an established part of our International Community, and adds a terrible evil to the world.

San Diego Maradona
09-05-2004, 22:04
The Arch-Diego of San Diego Maradona would like to send and envoy to the conference but may we clarify first that we are speaking on the same terms:

we have a unique problem, in that since my government was elected we have sentenced all those imperialists who employed workers at sub-human wages to an equal amount of slavery to that which they inflicted on the average worker for them, ie we sentence them to do the same number of hours per day, and calcualte the average age of the worker and assume they worked for them since the age of 14.

does this count as slavery?

technically we have slavery, but only as an anti-slavery tool and it contributes to the economy in order to benefit former slaves.

All right now that we´re in the conference, what´s on the agenda? Should we really fight against those who support slaves? or we just should take some actions? and what kind of actions?

The deputy foreign minister and his attaché will be attending this conference with an agenda of military intervention into all nations with an ‘official’ slave trade and heavy investment into legitimate industry into those who have a black market of human beings.

The Empire of Watertest would be interested in sending Eric Taylor to the conference in Praetonia.
Dontgonearthere
10-05-2004, 04:35
DGNTs status as a slave-holding state really depends on your definition of slave.
Slaves inside Dontgonearthere have certain rights not usualy associated with slavery. You cannot harm or kill a slave, they must be paid a certain amount, they are allowed a certain amount of days off, they cannot work more than ten hours a day, which is the normal workday in DGNT, they have many rights denied to people throughout the world.
If you have a problem with this, talk to the slaves themselves.
Most in Dontgonearthere chose slavery over debtors prison, or death at the hands of an angry banker. Sadly such incidents are common in Dontgonearthere, despite the best efforts of the government.
If you wish to remove this perfectly decent way of removing ones debts, well, you are free to attempt it. The beams of energy vaporizing your armies will help dispell the dark corners in many a childs room.

On a side note, DGNT does not advocate the 'old' form of slavery, cramming people onto ships like so much cargo to suffer and die over long months. This is forbidden within our borders and any who are caught in any action breaking the Slave Codes face a lengthy questioning by the Information Retreival Technicians, followed by a vacation to a rather famous resort which nobody seems to know the name or location of.

Can a pro-slavery nation attend ?
10-05-2004, 10:58
In part due to recent rumors of an upsurge in slave trading and a highly publicized case of a wealthy tourist being put on trial under charges of importing a slave*, Tahar Joblis will be sending a delegation to the conference.

*see here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=112884) for details. If you're going to jump into the action, I recommend reading through the thread. Trial mentioned is on page 6.

Can a pro-slavery nation attend ?

No, we dont want a Slavery vs Anti-slavery debate, this is for anti-slavery nations to discuss a solution for the problem.
New Genoa
10-05-2004, 11:47
"Well," said President Carter, "I suppose New Genoa should send an emissary to attend this meeting, eh? Perhaps to keep those blokes from randomly invading every slaver nation? What do you think, Derek?"

"You're the president, Mr. Carter. I suppose this would be an end-of-the-term thing?" responded the Vice President.

"Yes, but would you be willing to uphold New Genoa's participation in these anti-slavery meetings?"

"I will, Mr. President. You and I are both fiercely anti-slavery; thus, I find it compulsory that New Genoa attends. Not only to talk with fellow anti-slavers about the rise of slavery... but also to ensure that we pursue a peaceful resolution," said Derek Jackson.

"Good. Very good to hear. Now who do we send?" replied President Carter.

"I suppose whomever volunteers from the Diplomatic Corps."

"Aye."

(I know that what you done was a private conversation, so I'll reply OOCly. We don't intend to randomly invade slavers, and we are here to discuss peaceful resolutions, like diplomacy, sanctions, so forth.)

We welcome your participation.
Nova Hope

The delegation from Nova Hope formally requests the itinerary or scope for this conference so that we may better prepare to speak more knowledgeably.

As a note to other delegates attending we are very interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter. Especially on the matter of nations of a militaristic mind larger than ourselves who endorse slavery as an institution. While smaller nations we can impose moral decency on,… well. Let us just say we are interested.

Shall we begin?
12-05-2004, 20:16
The FWS will send an envoy as we are interested in the conference.
Librii
