The Legion of Defence [Promising Alliance]

Nanakaland Proudly Presents
The Legion of Defence
A Massive Defensive Alliance
Introduction
The Legion of Defence (LoD) was founded here at January 1, 2004. It was originally a protectorate service for weaker nations offered by me done via a thread in the International Incidents forum. I also asked for some help in the defending. It soon became the NationStates Protectorate Service (NSPS) and even had its own forums. The NSPS soon became an active alliance of not just Protectorates, but Protectors (those nations in the alliance that protect others in the alliance). The alliance had (and still has) close ties with my region (The Kingdom of the Midlands) and several others.

Something had to be done. A simple idea that started in a thread turned into an alliance beyond even my expectations. We soon made a charter and changed the name of the NSPS to the Legion of Defence (LoD). The charter also contains some interesting extras other than a protectorate service and defense, such as the League of Saviors, designed to rebuild wartorn nations.

However, all good things must come to an end. One of the most important nations in the LoD and my region, who submitted many clauses to the charter, was founder and head of the League of Saviors (LoS), and a Council member left NationStates. From late March through April, things went downhill. People gradually lost activity in the alliance and the amount of new recruits of Protectorates, vital for the core the alliance was built upon, dwindled.

Thankfully, I came up with an idea in late April. The LoD Academy was created for some time, but in April, I set many goals - such as the opening of the Academy in the summer, new recruiting policies, promised amendments to the aging Charter, and reforms of the Council. The LoD was going to be active again and I was going to help make it that way. Word of mouth and a thread no one visits anymore isn't going to help get the alliance active again.

That's where you come in. If you are small and/or pacifistic and in need of defense, you can sign up as a Protectorate and our kind alliance can defend you. You can also sign up for the LoD Academy for training. If you are over 150 million (100 million for some exceptions), then you can sign up as a Protector - a full fledged member who defends others in the alliance and has a say in it. Protectors can also run for office in the Council. You can also become a teacher for the LoD Academy if you are an experienced RPer. The alliance is becoming active again and you should join it (before I finish doing my reforms on the system because after reforms, it'll be harder to join). You just have to follow our Charter.

You can visit our forums (http://s3.invisionfree.com/Protectorate_Service/) to look around or to sign up. Look around this thread to learn more on the LoD.

The LoD boasts 28 Protectors, 4 Protectorates, and 9 former nations as of May 15, 2004.

The League of Saviors (LoS)
This is the war relief branch of the LoD. It goes by LoS and operates semi-independently, but it follows the same Charter, shares members, and ultimately follows the Council. It has not been active lately and is in need of people who will be devoted to this branch and someone who can be the leader of the LoS. Here's what the Charter says about the League of Saviors:

Article 7
It is hereby declared that as a part of the Legion of Defense family, a new branch will be formed. This branch, the League of Saviours, will be a war relief effort. At anytime needed, the countries in that branch will go out and stop riots, return peace, and provide aid. If needed, they will set up a temporary government. At some times, they will even be involved in terrorist situations. A Chief-of-Operations, a General (Helping bring temporary governments, providing aid, and protecting a currently unstable government) and a Peacekeeping Director (Peacekeeping and Riot Control) will be put into office.

The NationStates Protectorate Service (NSPS)
The NationStates Protectorate Service is the core of the alliance upon which all other aspects were built (to learn more background see Introduction). This is now just one feature of the LoD, but the entire Legion started as the NSPS. Let's hear what the Charter has to say about this NSPS:

Article 1
It is hereby declared that from now on, our organization shall go by the name of the Legion of Defence (LoD). Its purpose is to protect its members, especially the weaker Protectorates. We also do peacekeeping missions and rebuild nations in need. Our main service is the NationStates Protectorate Service, but we also have the League of Saviors.

...

Article 3
It is hereby declared that all Protectors shall provide defense capabilities to any Protectorate in the case of a Nation outside this organization attacking with no provocation. In case of bi-lateral military actions between a Protectorate and an outside nation, this organization will only aid the Protectorate after deliberation and vote between all the Protector Nations.

All nations who sign up for the LoD state whether they wish to become a Protectorate or Protector. Protectorates are the weaker nations who are protected from foreign agression by the Protectors. The Protectors have a commitment to help defend Protectorates when they can. However, Protectors are also defended, defended by each other.

Benifits of Being in the LoD
There are many benifits of being in the Legion of Defence. These are just a few.

1. Security. Whether you are a large superpower or a small nation, you'll feel safe being in the LoD, knowing that there is a whole alliance watching your back.

2. Fun. Of course, being in an alliance like the LoD will be fun.

3. The LoD Academy. The LoD Academy is a place where you can learn to RP and be tought tips and tricks. You don't have to be a LoD member to be in the Academy, but it is recommended.

4. Community. There is a nice community at the Legion of Defence forums that you can RP with or just chat with.

5. Politics. You can work your way up the ranks in the alliance and negotiate with other nations. There's a big political advantage at being in the Legion of Defence.

Ambassadorship
The LoD is very open diplomatically. We accept ambassadors from alliances or regions that want to be linked with the alliance. Just sign up the normal way, except requesting to be made an ambassador, and we'll be very kind and allow you to do so. You just need permission from your group leader(s).

Here's what our Charter has to say on the issue:

Article 8
It is hereby declared that the LoD shall take on members of pre-existing Alliances and Groups of countries, upon Council Approval, to be Ambassadors for their Group. They will have a small number of specific duties between their two groups, in order to promote cooperation. These duties shall include:

1) To keep communications between Alliances/Groups, for instance relaying decisions which affect both Groups.

2) To put forward proposed Alliances or joint military/diplomatic actions from one Group to the other.

3) To encourage one Group to support and help the other.

Other duties may be assigned specifically for communications between the LoD and another Group, in addition to the above duties.

The Diplomacy Wing (http://s4.invisionfree.com/The_Diplomacy_Wing/)
Established by the LoD to increase PR, it's a new way of doing diplomacy! No more waiting for the NS forums to work, no more simply posting in threads that anyone can view. Now, with the Diplomacy Wing, things can be done the right way. There are two ways to do things with the Diplomacy Wing.

You could use our quality forums (http://s4.invisionfree.com/The_Diplomacy_Wing/). There's even a special section at the forums you can reserve for extra-secret talks in a locked, private forum. Afterwards, that talk could be deleted instantly or released to the public as proof of the meeting. If you prefer to do things publicly, we have two forums for diplomatic discussions. We can even save your threads in our archives if you request it. The forums have other features such as a general forum and places for advertizements.

If you prefer live chats, #NationStates_Diplomacy (at EsperNet) is our IRC channel. At #NationStates_Diplomacy, diplomatic issues can be worked out real-time. Occasionally, at #NationStates_Diplomacy, we have a promotional bot-party with my bot, Penguin. For more information on IRC, see NationStates IRC chat (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=68482), a sticky in the NationStates forum.

GM is quite interested in joining this alliance as a Protector, and feels that doing so would be an enormous mutual gain. However, there are a few issues we must bring up first, issues that have prevented us from joining similar alliances in the past.

Does the LoD require member nations with storefronts to obey tax and discount laws, and if so, what are the percentages?

Does the LoD require Protector nations to provide defence for Protectorates, even during times of instability, unpreparedness, or other times when it would not be in the best interests of the Protector to enter a conflict of any sort?

Does the LoD require open tech sharing between allied nations?

If we find the answers to these questions fitting, GM would be proud to join your organization.

Okay. You have questions and I have answers.

Does the LoD require member nations with storefronts to obey tax and discount laws, and if so, what are the percentages?

No laws. However, most members that own storefronts have discounts for the alliance. You don't have to and there's no rule about it.

Does the LoD require Protector nations to provide defence for Protectorates, even during times of instability, unpreparedness, or other times when it would not be in the best interests of the Protector to enter a conflict of any sort?

No. It is recommended to defend Protectors and Protectorates during times of war, and it will help you progress through the alliance, but if you can't defend, you won't be forced to.

Does the LoD require open tech sharing between allied nations?

No requirements. No rules about it. Perhaps there'd be an ammendment, but probably not in recent times.

If we find the answers to these questions fitting, GM would be proud to join your organization.

What is your policy on admitting future tech nations?
08-05-2004, 21:31
We allow nations of all tech levels. I myself RP modern/future tech/fantasy. I wouldn't be restrictive at all.

[EDIT: Though the majority of the alliance is modern tech.]

Lastly, how much does the legion interfere with how a nation is run? (Say if a member wanted to go to war, but didn't want to get the legion involved.) Would the legion be required to get involved?
09-05-2004, 01:56
The Legion wouldn't be required to be involved. However, it's recommended that you tell the Legion that no help is needed and that it is not an unprovoked attack.

OOC: I see. That isn't too bad I suppose.

IC: We, of the United Socialist States of Central Facehuggeria would like to petition to join your noble alliance. What greater cause is there than to defend helpless small nations from larger warmongers?

We would like to be a 'protector' nation, and will pledge to do our utmost to help further the cause of justice for powerless small nations.

Hoorah...although you haven't officially been admitted, and I don't have the power to do so, I think Nanakaland will admit you. So welcome.

Nanakaland, this is a very comprehensive thread...good work! :P I'd just like to add one more section...

Praise for LoD

Nice work, Nanakaland. How long did writing all that take?
09-05-2004, 19:51
It took me weeks to plan the new thread (I started planning when I had the New Summer Recruiting Policies thread in the LoD forums). It then took me a few hours the night I started the thread and a few hours to update the next day. When I'm in the mood, I can create tons of reference threads.

Last time a nation attacked me, they were beaten into submission by 20+ allies, some outside of the LoD.
