IC:

Aug. 24th 1939

(Undisclosed government agency reporting on events in the pacific)
Germany and Russia had just signed their non-aggression pact as tensions in Europe escalated. This news was of small tactical consequence to the Japanese command having peaceable relations with the soviets since the great victory in Manchuria. Himanuma in response has tendered his resignation as the PM as the agreement violates previous Japanese German agreements.

Japan, now becoming more steadily dominated by the military, has had nationalist politicians and pro-military military advocates replacing their predecessors in the Diet.
With so much military advocacy in the government a massive campaign to retrain Japanese farmers leaving for the Manchurian province as military engineers met little resistance and Japan now begins construction of 35K ton capital ships and carriers.

On the foreign relations side this message was sent to the German government from high ranking Japanese officials.

“We find your disrespect for our agreements disconcerting as at one time you promised our ex-Prime Minister that Germany would be a friend in the event of soviet invasion. Your non-aggression treaty is in clear violation of the Anti-Comintern Pact and we find this unacceptable. Excuse your self from the offending treaty or we will be forced to recall our diplomats from your country.”

Dictator Franco has announced his continuing support for the other Fascist powers, specifically Germany, Italy, and Japan. He hopes the support from these great states will continue in future.

The state newspaper services had this to say:
"Today our glorious leader Franco declared his undying support for the great nation of Germany, Italy and Japan. Most certainly he will continue with the wonderful friendly relations that we have had with them previously. It is hoped that a spirit of sharing and giving will be prevalent in our connections with these nations, with foreign technology sure to become a key part of the Spanish government policy.

Meanwhile, the benevolent dictator has begun a program of speeding up the rebuilding following the Civil War. The Republican scum badly damaged the infrastructure of our great state, and our glorious leader is doing his utmost to repair this. With aid from German engineers, this would of course be achieved faster, we can be sure."

August 24th, 1939- Canberra, Australia

Being so far from "Home", as Many Australians still thought of England, news was slow to travel- even with the advent of the Telegraph and the Wireless, news could still take days to arrive.

A flight from Melbourne, Sydney, or Brisbane to London could take up to a week, flying either via Batavia (now Jakarta) Manila, Auckland, Wake Island or Midway Island, Honululu, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and sometimes Dublin (on Pan Am), or via Batavia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Calcutta, Cairo, and Paris (on British Empire Airways).

The edited highlights of this are, on this particular date, the Australian Government has no idea of the signing of the Russo-Germanic Non-Agression Pact. News of this would doubtless arrive over the next 24 hours via either Radio or Telegram, however...

August 24th 1939.
'Oh my God.' Was all that came out of officers mouth as he heard the knews. He didn't doubt for a second who the main target for any Russo-german pact would be. He sighed, it was all the politicians fualt of course. Instead of at least trying to negotiate with Germany when they were in good moods. But no, they had to immediatly say no. And now Poland was in the same mess it was over 120 years ago, stuck in between two powerful countries which sole desire was to tear poland apart. He sighed again and looked up at the portrait of the deceased Marshal Pilsudski. He wondered what he would have done in such a situation. It hit him, he did know what the marshal would have done.
He began thinking, wondering which officers would have sopurted his idea, not much but it could be enough. Yes there was no reason to allow the government to sentence them to death, perhaps with the right political reasons they could discurage German from it's new ally.

The knews of the pact also caused much alarm in the senat, after some time they decided o ntheir course of action, strengthen ties with France and England.

"Damn I hate these pacts..." Said karl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim as he was heading to a conference, where all the military leaders and the president would be present. The meeting was about the pact made betveen Soviet Russia and nazi Germany. Mannerheim arrived at the meeting. "So...do you think this will have any effect on our relations with the Soviets, Karl?" Asked the president. "Well we do have a treaty with them too, but we have been seeing some serious troop movement behind the border and I have ordered tighten security at the borders." "Good...What do you suggest we do next?" "I suggest we start buying suplies from other countries..."

The meeting went on and finished. What was desided there was that a offer would be sent to the Brits to buy their old Hurricanes and to speed up homeland weapons production.

To Soviet Russia: We hope that even though your agreement with Germany our relations will continue peacefully. We hope to have a meeting with you soon.

It was a dark, rainy evening in Budapest as Regent Admiral Miklos Horthy examined the report from the AVO secret agency of some sort of German-Russian agreement. "How is it that two such radically conflicting philosophies can ever come together like this?", wondered Horthy. "Nevertheless, we must accept this radical rebalance of power and accommodate Hungary's goals around it".

To the German government: We reaffirm Hungary's alliance with Germany and request a free trade deal involving Hungarian food and supplies exports to Germany in return for German weapons, war machines, and training for the Hungarian army, with favoured positions in our economy for German cartels. We also humbly request German endorsement of our historic claims on the lands of the Holy Stefanscrown that were wrongfully shorn off our kingdom after WWI. These include: The currently independent state of Slovakia, the Austrian province of Burgenland, Transylvania, Craotia and Slavonia, and Banat. In return we pledge our support to German territorial revision claims.

In "The Black Room" in the Mexican government building, the latest news was in: a spy had uncovered soem form of secret pact between Soviet and Germany.

"Why would Hitler give Stalin half of Poland if this pact was a lie?" The presidnet remarked. "But, I see no reason for us to react. Poland is in Europe, we are in America, far away. Let the Europeans do war, as long as they don't try to draw us into it, as they did in their last big war. Our neighbour to the north will enforce the Moreau doctrine, should they try anything crazy back in the old world, but just in case, let's do buisness with Germany..."

"But sir, why?"

"Because. Should we need it we could join Hitler! How we would just love the cahnce to go on a little... crusade in central America. But, the british and french would never accept it... but, if we have military aid from Germany, the outlook will be different."

To Hitler: We would like to do buisness, send me a telegram and we'll talk.

Paris, France

Georges Bonnet blinked as the flashbulbs went off. He hated the Press. "Once again, France is distrubed by the Nazi-Soviet Pact, to say the least. I would like to remind the world that secret alliances such as this dragged us into the Great War of 1914. Now I'm sure my assiant can answer any questions you have." Leaving the startled junior-secretary to field the barrage of questions, the French Foreign Minister left the room.

He met with Preimer Daladier an hour later within Daladier's office. "Things are getting strange George. I don't like this Pact between the Germans and Soviets, it doesn't bode well for Eastern Europe. Also, we've received a message from the Swiss. They're requesting a meeting with us and the British."

Daladier slid the telegram across the desk, Bonnet reading it quickly. "This is odd. The Swiss have never been ones for alliances, but perhaps the Germans unsettle them as much as us."

"Which is what I was thinking. I want you to attend the meeting, see what their about. Preparations are already being made, and the Swiss have been notified. You'll take the train to the border and from there to the meeting, wherever it is."

Roaring crowds jubiliantly greeted the two great leaders of the two European Axis Powers. Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, both dressed in sharp military garb waved to the masses below from a balcony on the Executive Building in Rome. In a show of mutual support, Mussolini invited the German leader to visit Italy. Almost single-handedly, these two great leaders had transformed post-Great War gloom and discontent in their nations into a glorious nationalist revolution. Fascism tightened its grip over Germany and Italy, and national fervor ran high. In Germany, Hitler spoke of the mighty conquerors of old and of his dream of a united German Third Reich. Mussolini, meanwhile recalled the glories of Rome when she spanned the Mediterranean and beyond.

"Why not again? From Italy, to where all of western civilization and culture can trace its roots, the country of the Ancient Romans will reclaim its lost glory! Italy, possessing the most cultured of all peoples, birthplace of art and civilization! We proudly exclaim to the world of our heritage and announce 'We will not stand to be pushed around!' For Italy and for her past and future honor!"

Already, nationalist sentiment had driven Il Duce to begin the annexation of territories in Italy (not that he minded). With the troubles brewing in Germany and Russia, the Allied powers had more than enough on their plate to be able to spare troops to counter the Italian advance through miles of barren North African desert.

Mussolini could not be more delighted. There were none to oppose him, and his popularity was at its highest ever. He would lead Italy to glory unheard of since Roman times.

He stood above a large military map of North Africa and grinned broadly at the sight of all the territory claimed by his victorious troops. All colonies everywhere were caught unprepared and falling to the Italian juggernaut. However, if he were to look slightly more carefully, he would see that one of his armies was poised on the border of a country that did not, to the outside observer, seem to be any different, nor would share any different fate than the other African lands. A large country inhabited by a backwards people, it possessed no distinguishing characteristics of merit, but was instead simply labeled "Ethiopia".

A message was sent to the USSR from the high command in Japan.

“We understand we have had poor relations with you in the past however we would like to assuage that with this message. We are growing tired of the ground war in China and would like to end it. However China itself has been left in no state to negotiate as an equal and so we come to you. We would like to sign a non-agreesion pact and an agreement of the spheres of influence in China. While this idea may sound far fetched we are willing to renege on a previous political policy and allow communist ‘client’ states to be set up in your sphere of influence as you set fit.

We will continue to occupy our part of China for the purposes of ensuring a stable government, the borders of which will be defined as follows.

From 50km south of Shaoxing from the coast Due west to the perpendicular intersection with a line south from Zhengzhou following the mountain range, but not including Tai’an. We would also occupy everything North and East of Beijing. Japan would of course maintain Taiwan as well.

To comply with this agreement you would have to send troops to ‘assist the unstable government’. The sphere of your influence would be defined as everything not within independent China or The pre-stated Japanese sphere of influence.

Independent China would encompass the territory south of the Japanese sphere of influence. It’s northern border would be defined as 2 straight lines from Chengdu. One SW to the nearest foreign border, while the other would extend SE from to the SW corner of Japan’s sphere of influence. This country would be set up in a government agreeable to both parties with a head of state agreeable to both parties. As a gesture of good faith we are willing to allow a communist state under Mao Tse Tung to be implemented. The reconstruction of said state would be undertaken by both Japan and the USSR in an equitable manner. That said no side would invest more than 35% than the other and any military moved into the country would be negotiated with China.”

The Führer stood high upon a balcony in Berlin. Below him, 20 000 german people stood cheering. He finished his speech, and the people below roared loudly. The Führer silenced them all by raising his hand. Quickly, silence spread across the plaza.

"Germans, Arians, today we are more powerful than ever! Today, Germany is stronger than any one else! Today... Today, we will start our crusades! We shall make a Reich that will last a thousand years! The first step was taking earlier this year, when we annexed Chzechia, and our anschlauss with our borthers in Austria.
However, what is a nation without allies? Our allies are from the south. The proud people in Italy, lead by their own leader, or ?Duce? as he is called, has announced that our respective nations will form a pact! Long live the Reich, and its ally, Italy!"

However, Burgenland has german people, and thus we can not give that province to you just like that. Maybe we could form a treaty later about that province later on?

Ireland: we will bring you arms, but do not act yet! Wait until the British are occupied elsewhere... Perhaps we should form a secret allience?

To Japan: If you would have been my ally, I would have informed you. And I can supply technology to you. Technology and weapons. How would you like to get the latest blueprints of the latest panzer for example? YOu would get these things, as well as blueprints ofr planes and submarines, the altter shouold have a great appeal to you as you are a large maritime nation and it is no secret that you claim a lot of islands in the pacific as your own.
I will also help you against Soviet, as I will eventually run into trouble with Stalin.

We are very interested in said blue prints, especially those of the most recent German designs. While we do not have specific Intel on your projects we would be in your debt if a Langsschnitt class sub loaded with German sonar and listening technology were to find its way into the pacific and be turned over to us. The fighter designs, while interesting, are not a top priority for us. The question is what ‘exactly’ is it that you would expect from us?

We accept your reservations over Burgenland and wish to suggest a possible compromise. If you will cede Burgenland to us, we will offer in return (this is as a basis for negotiations):

cultural autonomy

government subsidies for German-language schools and universities

exemption from the Magyarisation programme we intend to commence in the regions we claim

dual German-Hungarian citizenship

cultural exchange programmes with Germany,

This is a glorious day, as you are now free for ever of the hated Czech oppressors. Martial law will be in place until this province has properly been reintegrated into Hungary. Today Japanese forces are occupying their sphere of influence in China and publicize their treaty with the USSR. Moving in thousands of troops the indigenous people of that country welcome the Japanese with wariness and the only thing preventing all out riot is the installment of a local nationalist leader. In a speech to the world the leader of the ‘New Empire of China’ promised to lead his country hand in hand with Japan to straddle the world like a giant.

To ‘jumpstart’ the economy of this new protectorate state Japan will provide education and new manufacturing contracts the country. The industrial centres of Shanghai and Wutan are beginning to churn out the latest in Japanese artillery and mobile armour. Youth training programs and volunteer militias are being started up all over the country. The success rate of recruitment for the militia is surprisingly high as starving men are very interested in 3 full meals a day.

To the installed government of Manchuku, we have reports that a Russian envoy has entered country and disappeared somewhere in your area. We request that track down the Russians and refer them to the Japanese embassy using whatever means necessary. We are curious as to why your border guards did not stop them as we have not had good relations with the soviets in the past and you haven’t received any orders to treat them any differently.

Also you are required to send a contingent of 5,000 armed men onto the island of Okinawa as we will need the men to launch an offensive. We are also in need of ‘comfort girls’ to make sure that the armies now occupying China are not too brutal. We need 800 women of average to high caliber.

Also, please be advised that the Japanese government is now placing wire taps on all lines between Japan, Manchuku, Independent China and Japanese controlled China. Sufficed to say any land line communications done on mainland Asia are going to be observed by us.

As a request we would appreciate that you send any prisoners of any kind to the Motherland as we require more subjects for continuing research.

<Official Communiqué to the Client State of Manchuko>

ALLIANCES?!?!?!?!?

The thought that you’d ever make such an overture to the Russians was beyond us! We demand a full an uncensored transcript of all communications you have had with any and all foreign nations.

We also thank you for the opportunity to search your country for what are apparently Russian spies. Since they do not have your permission to be there we will be contacting the soviet government about this outrage. Do not worry we will extract the information from the Russians as to what malicious intentions they had in your country. FYI we are sending 3 000 battle hardened Japanese troops into your country to protect it from the apparent soviet threat. These troops will be stationed at all border crossings so that the can assist in the search for those damn infiltrators.

The matter of the comfort girls can be way laid for now, we will simply recruit them from Korea instead.

We will take the 3000 troops now there are transports waiting for them in Korea, the city of Pusan. Take the railroad the ships will expect the contingent there in five days. (IC days not RL days). They will be transported to Okinawa as we will need them for an offensive immediately.

<Official Communiqué to the Sovereign Nation of The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.>

We are very displeased to have learned from our esteemed ally, Manchuko, that you are sending unwelcome operatives into his honorable country. If this is not the case we apologize and will return your citizens to you, after questioning them. However should these agents be official government agents we will recognize them as such and treat them how we treat all our prisoners of war.

In the future it will smooth diplomatic tensions if any and all negotiations done with Manchuko were approved by Tokyo first.

<Communiqué to the administration of The New Empire of China>

We believe that your country is in imminent danger and as such are beginning the construction of fortified pillboxes along all non-friendly borders. We are also installing more factories to employ more of your many, many citizens. These factories will produce an assortment of armaments such as Tanks, heavy bombers, mobile artillery, Japanese fighters and ammunition for all platforms listed above.

We are also constructing dry docks and a sub pen in Shanghai as we are perfecting a new prototype of submarine because we have recently come into some new advanced technology.

We also congratulate on your 100th tank. Your efforts in manufacturing have not gone unnoticed and we hope that you will continue the good work.

<Internal Communiqué>

As soon as the German sub is secured begin reverse engineering the technology for our immediate use. All zeros, bombers, carriers, battleships and tanks will be upgraded with the advanced sonar and or radio technology as appropriate. New model subs need to be constructed to take advantage of the advanced technology and as such all sub pens will begin constructing them.

It is now the opinion of this administration that we need a new flagship and on this opinion we are initiating the construction of a 100K ton warship in Tokyo. Please make the appropriate personnel changes. Said battleship will make use of the German optic technologies and its primary use will be shore bombardment and anti-aircraft.

As another note to policy change, anyone on a government approved research project is immune to draft orders and research is expected to continue unaltered.

<Official Communiqué to the mighty nation of The United States of America>

We understand that you have been unhappy with our actions for some time now. As a civilized nation we have taken steps towards peace in Asia. To normalize relations between our two nations I would like to invite you to the negotiating table where we can hammer out a non aggression pact. To Germany:

We have prepared the pacific. We are poised to attack, however if you tell us what country you plan on attacking we can attack the colony first. This will cause the mother country to send reinforcements leaving them weaker for you.

I am considering a regime change in Manchuku, however as long as they are co-operating I don’t see the need. The recent rebellion and apparent socialist ties make me wary of them. The only reason I mention this to you is because you have allowed them equal access in our pact and I simply do not want a misunderstanding to occur.

Another question to note is USSR. It is no secret that geography separates our countries, but that geography is limited to one nation. Should the entire pact attack the USSR with the exclusion of all other enemies we may be able to connect our alliance with a railroad. I do not believe the world will intervene if we attack on the basis of ‘saving the world from communism’ in fact we may be able to garner British and American support.

We will provide you with what ever is needed to make the airbase in finished repair before the end of the month. Upon completion we will be transferring an undetermined amount of aircraft there. Please have the airport built to be able to sustain any amount of enemy attack by land or air.

Australia is Consolidating her forces (NZ as well), and is investigating the possibility of producing her own Combat Aircraft.

NZ is currently arming Tiger Moths with War Surplus Lewis .303LMGs to serve as observation and defence aircraft.

We would like to unite all the Baltic states into one, do we have any support?
USSR (secret IC): Can we have a non aggression pact. May you help us if we need to untie the Baltic, with an Iron Fist.

I think that's what happens in ww2 threads. You have a big build up, then no wars.

The problem is that the real shooting doesn't actually start until late 1940, or early 1941. The period 1939-1940 was known as "Sitzkreig" or "The Phoney War", as everyone sat around doing nothing until The Battle of Britain, and even after that it was fairly quiet outside North Africa until the start of 1942- after Pearl Harbour was bombed and the US got their ass into gear.

None of the European countries put up much of a fight (France lasted something like 6 weeks), and until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour the only real resistance they had in Asia was the Chinese and the Dutch, who got their asses kicked pretty quickly (most of the Dutch East Indies armed forces ran like hell for Australia, apparently).

In fact, for most people, WWII doesn't get "Interesting" until the end of 1942 when the Allies invaded Italy, or, more commonly, 1944, with D-Day and so on.

The reason I haven't posted is because nothing has happened thus far that affects Australia. At this rate, we could declare ourselves Neutral and miss the whole war and no-one would notice...

ooc: I'm right to kick start the war early, hence the what if part. But I was waiting for Germany to resolve Danzig and Muggles to hit Mongolia. I'm not a first one over the top kinda guy

OOC: Ok, how about Australia invades the Dutch East Indies, just for the sheer hell of it? Imperialism is good...
