President Richard Hoffman assasinated....
Austar Union

Republic of Austar Union >> Anatoba
--------------------
The President sat quietly in his office, watching the night sky outside. That night, was particlarly starry, and as he thought to himself, he giggled. Walking out to the balcony outside he sat, with a glass of brandy and ice in his hand. Looking out over Anatoba, he closed his eyes as the cool wind blew through his hair, now greying. He sipped his glass, and continued to watch the sky above him.
Reflecting, he smiled. His father used to take him fishing on nights like these, especially when it was particularly balmy night. For a few minutes, Richard stared out over the city, smiling to himself, when he was stirred by a sound inside his office.
Curiously, he peered through the curtains, and could see two shapes moving through the darkeness. Calling out to them, he recieved no response. A little nervously, he drew back the curitains, revealing two men who were searching through his desk.
"Uh, excuse me Gentlemen", he croaked out nervously, "Can I help you?"
The two men continued to search through his desk, as if they didnt notice. A woman walked into the room, and the President stepped in, clearing his throat. The woman looked up, directly at the President, her face hidden by the lack of light in the room, as if she were awaiting an answer.
"Can I help you at all?", asked the President.
The woman smiled, her lips visible from the starlight outside, "No, actually, your in the way..."
The President squinted at the mysterious woman, "Just what is going on here?"
Without awaiting an answer, the woman strangely left the room. Seconds later, a tall, yet strong looking man walked in.
"General Allenberg?", asked the President in disbelief, "Just what is going on here?"
The General saluted the President with power, "Sir, we have reason to believe that your life is in danger."
The President stood there in disbelief, his brandy glass still in his hand.
"Mr President, could you please look out the window?" asked Allenberg.
The President shuffled over to the window, drawing back the curtains just a bit, both curious and nervous as to whats going on. Behind him, the General drew out a gun from his hoyster and pointed it at the back of the head of the President.
"I dont see anything...", commented the President.
"Of course you dont.", replied Allenberg.
Pulling the trigger, the President fell to the ground dead. Blood splattered onto the General's gun, and the General frowned. Pulling out his hankerchief, Allenberg began to clean his gun off smiling, "You always make a mess of things dont you Mr. Hoffman..."

General Lowell, Minister of Intelligence, sat at his desk reading preliminary reports from the Austar Union.
So it seems Hoffman is dead. It looks like the military did this, Lowell thinks to himself, This is very interesting. This could be the spark I was looking for.
General Lowell places the report in a drawer and shuts it. He stretches across his desk and presses the intercom button.
"Miss Daniels, please get me Senator Allenby, Governor Fredericks, Lieutenant General Issacs, and Vice Admiral McFarrell.
Tell them to meet me at the Old Ministry of Internal Affairs Building."
Miss Daniels voice comes over the intercom in its usual soft and musical manner "Right away General."
Without even giving a second thought to the request she makes the calls and sets up the meeting.

As the night continued, General Allenberg sat in Hoffman's office. A car pulled up outside and waiting for a visitor, the General stood up. Stepping over the dead president, he drew the curtains back, revealing the street below.
Down below, a car had pulled up, completly unmarked. The General smiled as a strong man got out, closing the car door behind him. Clicking his fingers, two of the General's guards came to him.
"See to it that Mr. Caponie gets his greeting." he ordered.
The two guards saluted, and hurridly left the room. Just minutes, later, Allenberg watched as his two guard appeared on the street below, saluting Mr. Caponie and escorting him inside.
The General walked out to the hall smiling, and as Caponie appeared in the hallway, Allenberg kissed his visitor on the cheek, "Welcome friend... We have much to discuss."
With that, both men went into Hoffman's office, closing the door behind them

Inside the office, Mr. Caponie slammed his fist on the desk, "I thought I was told that the military would be ready NOW!"
General Allenberg, was pacing the room, "Im sorry sir, but these things cannot be rushed. Hoffman was getting suspicious, alas I could not do much at the time..."
"Your damn right your sorry Allenberg. If this causes my mission to be a failure, I'll have your ass!", replied Caponie angrily.
The General was worried, "Please sir, forgive me, look, let me make one phone call, please sir, just one call!"
Caponie frowned angrily, "You have five minutes..."

In the streets of Anatoba, a slick, black car drove through the streets at a steady pace. Its flags raised, it gained the attention of every citizen still out on the streets of the 24 hour city. In the back of the car, a man was sitting comfortably in the back, sipping a glass of wine.
"Soon my darling, Everything will be perfect...", he told his glass of wine.
Looking up at the driver, he became annoyed, "Driver, whats taking so long!"
The driver looked into the mirror, "I apoligise sir..."
The driver pressed harder on the accelorator, and the car sped up, driving through the occasional puddle.

Back in Hoffman's office, General Allenberg slammed down the telephone reciever grinning. Caponie just watched him, "Well?"
"Success sir, 7th Army is mobilizing...", replied Allenberg.
"Very well," replied Caponie reaching into his jacket pocket, "Here's your reward..."
The General smiled, and took the reward from Caponie. Opening his hand, revealed a big brass key. Smiling, he walked over to the safe on the other side of the room. He put the key into the lock, and turned it. The lock clicked open with ease and Allenberg pulled open the safe door with ease...

Meulmania today has officially condemned the assasination of President Hoffman. Although not being on particularly solid terms previously terrorism and assasination is an unnecessary evil in today's society. Meulmania is still contemplating an official response to the assasination attempt and will advise world media in a press statement over the next few days.

"oh? OH!" The vice portectorate minister (VPM) sat up suddenly in his chair.. "Well what can we do about that? Not very Democratic..."
"Well we could use the SAS to get rid of this general fellow..."

SNN: Fair and balanced, from our point of view
In news today the Sicrati Prime Minister condemned utterly the killing of President Hoffman, one of our most important and dear allies.
"We hereby pledge to assist in anyway possible the nation of Austar Union in the hunting down and detaining of the coward who did this."
The PM also proposed that they would provide troops to the manhunt as a gesture of good will to the Union.

As a loyal member of Concordia, the death of the leader of a member-state is a big concern especially if the coup leads Austar Union away from the alliance.

The black car, pulled up outside the President's office. The driver got out, and opened the door for the man in the back. The man arrogently stepped out. And walked up to the front door of the building.
Stepping inside, he dryed himself off as it has began to rain. He was to meet his friends upstairs.
After climbing the long staircase, he reached the top, and walked into Hoffman's office. Upon entering, he saw the two men in deep conversation. He walked over, and was greeted by both.
In the meantime, outside the office, a special team of operatives had gathered. They were hunting the three men, and were bent on killing them.

05-05-2004, 18:57
The midnight oil burned mericlessly in the office of the President of the Shalrirorchian Republic. President Gistarai had been hauled rudely out of bed by a phone call from the Foreign Minister. Within twenty-two minutes of that call, he was sitting in a somewhat rumpled business suit with matching black tie at his desk in the Presidential office.
"All right, gentlemen, what have we got?" Tarumigan Gistarai asked, rubbing his palm over his sleepy eyes.
"Sir," the Director of Intelligence said, "a number of hours ago, there was apparently an assassination attempt on the life of President Hoffman of the Republic of Austar."
The President straighted in his chair, his coffee sitting forgotten on the desktop beside him. "What the hell?"
"We are not entirely certain about what's going on in Austar Union at the moment, Mr. President." Defense Minister Gen. George Beregovoy interjected. "It's creating a stir in every national government surrounding the Union."
"Our initial reports suggest that Hoffman is a hostage or dead, Mr. President." the intelligence chief resumed. "Details are sketchy, but troops are moving within Austar's borders. We may be looking at a military coup, or an effort by the national government to crush an insurgency."
"In either case, Mr. President." Beregovoy commented, "it's bad news for us. We have a destroyer, the Liberation, in port there. I've already given orders for her to prepare to sail at a moment's notice, but with an engine failure she's stranded there until repairs are made good."
At this point the Commerce Minister, Duran Worthington, picked up. "We have a substantial number of Shalrirorchian citizens and business interests in the Republic, sir. If there IS a coup underway, the situation for them may deteriorate rapidly."
"There are a substantial number of Shalrirorchian business interests in MANY nations today, Duran." the President replied. "The global economy, you know."
"One of the interests is a branch office of the AEGIS Corporation, sir."
The President cursed. AEGIS was a major contributor to his party, and a major employer in Shalrirorchia. The CEO was a boyhood friend of his. If it involved AEGIS, the situation was for more complex. He drummed his fingers on the tabletop as the report continued, then raised his hand when the flow of information abated.
"George, what is the status of the paratrooper transport planes?" he asked.
Beregovoy shifted uncomfortably. "They are still being refitted, sir. They have not yet been cleared for duty."
The President snorted. "Well, clear them quickly. Get the Marines together, then contact Austar's mil....no, wait. Contact the CIVILIAN government by secure line and try to get permission for an incursion. But if you're right, the government is going to have much more pressing concerns, like staying alive. Send in the Marines to secure the Liberation's dock site, then begin a -mandatory- evacuation of all Shalrirorchian citizens from that country, effective immediately."
"Sir..." the Foreign Minister supplied hesitantly, "Sending marines into the Republic of Austar could possibly be considered a form of invasion..."
"To Hell with diplomatic protocol." replied President Gistarai. "We have a responsibility to protect Shalrirorchian citizens, and if Austar cannot do that, Shalrirorchia will. It's ugly, but so is a coup. The second our people are evacuated, I want those troops out."
"And what if Austar Union's defence force or the insurgents react to the presence of Shalrirorchian troops?" Beregovoy asked.
The President frowned grimly. "Our troops are authorized to defend themselves. Just try not to kill anybody. The Shalrirorchian Republic is not exactly a military superpower, and I don't want to ignite a full-scale war with whatever government comes to power there if I can help it."
:!: News Flash :!:
The Most Serene Republic of Shalrirorchia today ordered all Shalrirorchian citizens out of the Republic of Austar Union, citing the uncertain political situation. Shalrirorchian Army and Marine forces are reportedly being mustered for deployment to cover the evacuation of the civilans from the country.

Shalrirorchia tends to hire agents in many of the nations surrounding it. The intent of this is not malicious...Shalrirorchia just wants to be aware of what those nations are doing. Information regarding whatever is going on in the Union might easily be on account of an agent.
In addition, Shalrirorchia is not a major force in the region, save perhaps for its' economic assets which include uranium. The Shalrirorchian army uses dated equipment from the old Soviet orbit, although recently it has begun to modernize with tools provided by the United States of America.
Air:
MiG-23s (Soviet)
MiG-29s (Soviet)
Various (old) Helicopters
Ground Vehicle:
T-62 Battle Tanks (Soviet)
BTR-60 Armored Transport (Soviet)
Ground Infantry:
M-16 Battle Rifle (USA)
81mm mortars (USA)
AT-4 Anti Tank Rocket Launcher (USA)
Please note, in any rapid deployment situation, there'd be nothing but light vehicles like transports and infantry. Those old Russian airplanes are too old to reach that far, and the Shalrirorchian Navy does not have any aircraft carriers.

WOODSTOCK (ASP) -- President Mike Sarzo sat nervously in his chair listening to reports from the warfront in Holy Panooly, when his direct line rang. With his secretary at lunch, that meant her phone had gone uncovered.
"I'm going to have a serious word with Becky when she gets back from lunch," Sarzo thought to himself. Becky and the entire staff of clerical workers at the Gray House knew how much Sarzo hated to answer the phone. Sarzo warily picked up the phone and gruffly answered, "Sarzo."
"Mr. President, we just received word that Austar Union's president has been assassinated."
"WHAT?!" Sarzo recoiled in shock. A thousand thoughts were running through his mind. Was it Holy Panooly? What could have happened?
"We don't know anything about it yet; all we know is that their president is dead."
Sarzo dropped the receiver, unable to listen to another word of the breathless reports that were seemingly flying a mile a minute on the other end. He got up and walked toward the window, where he could see the Parliament House nearby. Suddenly, he felt queazy and grabbed a trash can and vomited into it. He weakly picked up the phone.
"Did Holy Panooly have anything to do with this?"
"It would be speculation at this point, sir," the voice at the other end of the phone said. "And you know what happens when we try to speculate."
Sarzo didn't need to be reminded. Sarzonia almost went to war with Doujin based on faulty intelligence and the Navy bombarded a city that turned out not to be a Holy Panooly city based on similarly bad intelligence. It got two intelligence chiefs fired and one of Sarzonia's two admirals court martialed.
"Reports are coming in that it was a terrorist attack and that Holy Panooly was not behind it," the voice said. "Cold comfort, I know, sir."
"Cold comfort," Sarzo said as he put the receiver back in its position on his desk. He picked the phone back up and called his press secretary.
"Release the following message to Austar Union's people. 'The Incorporated States of Sarzonia wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the people of the Austar Union on the death of President Richard Hoffman and we offer any humanitarian assistance necessary.' I also want you to clear any Sarzonian citizens out of Austar Union."
"Acknowledged, Mr. President."
Sarzo went back to listening to war reports a little more shaken than before.

OOC: No, this is leading somewhere Hogsweat, sorry ;)
Inside the President's office, Caponie, Allenberg, and the mysterious man both sat comfortably, Hoffman's body still lying across the room. Both Allenberg and Caponie were nervous, yet respectful in the man's presence.
"I have reports from foriegn agents that the world knows already about Hoffman's death.", reported the man with power in his voice, "I want to wonder what the hell is going on..."
General Allenberg frowned, "Im not quiet sure how they found out sir, I suggest that maybe our coup is being watched via sattelite?"
"Thats impossible!", snorted Caponie, "The only way they could know is if we had a rat!"
Both the man and Allanberg sat silently. Caponie awaited a response.
"What? You think Ive been spilling the beans on this operation?", exclaimed Caponie, his voice getting shrill.
Both men continued to sit in silence.
"Oh my god!" yelled Caponie, now getting angry, "What makes you think ive been doing anything under-the-table?!"
The mysterious man spoke up, "Thirty Million Dollars was deposited into your account last tuesday Caponie. How do you suggest it got there?"
Caponie now standing was speechless, unable to talk. Allenberg watched with intent. Reaching into his jacket pocket, the mysterious man pulled out a thick yellow envelope. Opening the envelope, he scattered photos of Caponie onto the table.
Caponie shook his head in disbelief, "No, how did you get those?!"
"Who were you talking to Caponie?", asked the mysterious man, "He looks like this man to me!"
Pulling out another photo, the mysterious man slammed it onto the desk. Allenberg was in shock, "Richard Carlson...."
"Yes! Thats right! Foriegn Media Correspondent Richard Carlson!", answered the man now yelling in rage, "Do you know what youve done Caponie?!"
Tears began to well in Caponie. In sudden anger and desperation, he pulled his gun from his holster. In stunning reaction, the man also pulled a gun from his own holdter, and pointed it at Caponie. Both men stood, with guns pointed at each other. Allenberg, stunned and afraid to the side a bit, "Now, now gentlemen. Time to problem solve...Lets not be hasty here..."
The man gritting his teeth was more angrier than ever, "Shut up Allenberg, or I'll kill you too! But, first, this sob has to pay..."
"The only paying I'll be doing is the prison sentance for your murder...", replied Caponie almost losing it.
The man smirked, "If only you got the chan..."
Just at that second, in stunning display the doors burst open, and a team of 12 ASF (Austarian Special Forces) rushed in. The two men turned, mouths open.
"No!", screamed Allenberg as the ASF opened fire upon the three men. Within seconds, the room once filled with gunfire, had now resided in silence. On the floor, all three men lay dead on the ground, Hoffman's body, just meters away from the assasins...
In the most neutral way possible, one of the ASF Troopers reached to his radio holding down the button, "Mission completed..."

Official Government Report
-------------------
A few days ago, our late President Hoffman was assasinated by an attempted coup. In the fire-fight which occured in the President's office, we have identified three men DIRECTLY linked to his assasination, and attempted coup in our nation.
1. General Allenberg
2. Mikey Caponie
3. Michael Dulinberg
General Allenberg was a close friend of the late Mr Hoffman, and we believe he was corrupted by Michael Dunlinberg.
Mikey Caponie's involvement is unknown, however he has been investigated over the past five years over his suspected links to a major druglord in Columbia. However thanks to him, the coup had failed.
Michael Dulinberg was the leader of the Austarian Nationalist Party.
Upon investigating this information, we have proof that the Austarian Nationalist Party was in fact attempting to take over the nation. Luckily, lower rank officials in the 7th Army based just outside of the capital urged the men to refraim from furfilling orders to storm the capital.
All senior members of the Austarian Nationalist Party have been aprehended, and are awaiting trial on the case of high treason, and consipiricy to assasinate.
A new President will be sworn in next week. Over the next three days, the Republic will be in mourning, in rememberance of our fallen hero.
We thank the world for their sympathy.
Yours Truly,

The President of the Shalrirorchian Republic breathed out slowly and took a sip of his cognac, letting the dying light of the day filter through the glass and cast a rainbow of color onto the surface of the desk.
"Jesus Christ, it was WAY too close, George." he muttered.
"Yes, sir." Beregovoy replied, straightening his uniform. "The marines were on the pad before we recalled them. The Liberation has left. Austar will be somewhat preoccupied for the next couple of months while they sort this all out..."
The President took another drink and then slammed the empty glass down on the desk. "And everybody in the region probably knows what we were about to do -anyway-. They'll be looking over their shoulders at us from now on."
Beregovoy cleared his throat. "You were ready to defend our citizens, sir." the general replied. "The fact that you didn't need to is, of course, a positive."
"Of course." the President replied almost distractedly. "What's the status on the Project?"
"The Americans regret to inform us that the next shipment of vehicles, the Humvees, will be delayed." the general grunted. "Some problem with our billing."
"Dammit, we may need them soon. McClellan's people warned me that insurgents are causing trouble up north. He's got the counter-terrorist teams and local police working on it. I'm pushing for a diplomatic solution if at all possible." the President groused.
"Arkady Island has never been happy with being a part of Shalrirorchia." replied Beregovoy acidly. "At least, not the minority there."
"Maybe so, but I am convinced we can negotiate a solution without things turning ugly."
