The Empire of MMI encourages nations to join the Alliance of Independent States (A.I.S.) region. The A.I.S. exists as an anti-UN haven. Accordingly, membership in the UN is OUTLAWED by the A.I.S. Members of A.I.S. enjoy mutual protection benefits and significant discounts at the A.I.S. storefront, including access to nuclear and anti-nuclear weapons and systems. A.I.S. members are fiercly independent and highly enthusiastic NationStates countries who look forward to rapid growth in the future.

In the Emperor's wise opinion, the UN's main shortcoming is 'presumption'.

Their presumption you say? How so?
Inyurface
06-05-2004, 17:02
The UN is pretentious. The presumption that one entity, not in the same position or with the same shared experiences, issues, problems, strengths, weaknesses, resources, history, customs, beliefs, morals, etc... knows best how to decide for those same people with whom that entity, as a whole, has nothing in common fits that definition.

The UN presumes too much and acts with too little regard for the people who are most affected by its decisions, actions and/or inactions.

The UN acts (in its opinion) "for the greater good" by presuming to know what that greater good actually is, despite opinions and facts to the contrary.

The UN is weak, yet presumes to be strong.

The UN is a bureaucratic trap where deliberation supercedes action, yet action precedes thoughtful and deliberate consensous.

The UN is a contradiction of its own terms... "United Nations." Invasion of one's sovereign dignity and rights hardly foster unity. Rather, mutual benefits, usually for economic reasons, is what breeds unity among individual nations.

The UN does not provide protection for its members, yet protects those who would disregard and disobey its own rules.

The UN appoints nations like Lybia to head international committes on human rights, yet is reluctant to call for investigations of its own "admisinstration" where there is a prima facia case of dishonesty and theft.

The UN is a farce. True peace and unity comes from agreements among sovereign nations. The UN is not responsible for NATO, or the fall of the Soviet Bloc, or the Camp David Accords, or European Union. The UN is responsible for, however, the Korean War (which was hardly "united"), the entire mess in the Middle East, just to mention a few.

Yes, we at R.N.I., know that these arguments are conclusory in nature. However, a full-blown and proper discussion would create a valuminous document that would not even fit on this server.

So, in conclusion, R.N.I., on behalf of the A.I.S., welcome all who would shed the oppressive yoke of the UN. Declare yourselves free from UN control. Join a region that holds sacred the sanctity of self-determination and sovereign dignity! A region that holds sacred the agreement to truly live in peace with one another! A region that will forsake all who would oppose and destroy its brothers, by unanimous and un-deliberated swift and immediate action to protect and defend itsa brothers.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will and the A.I.S., shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

So sayeth the A.I.S.

R.N.I. Supreme Chancellor

Just because we do not adopt the UN's position, nor do we endorse it, nor do we approve of said UN policies, we should always remain open-minded to those individual nations who would be our friends even though they belong to the UN. So long as the UN does not enter our region, nor MY borders, that may still be acceptable and prudent.

The AIS, through MMI and RNI have been able to help broker what appears to be agreeable terms of a cease fire, and a final end to the conflict between Glatannia and Sonic Hero Land. Through an open and sincere discussion-based analysis, RNI and MMI have proven that one does not need the UN to settle problems... just open and fair dialogue. The AIS, offers its services to those who would not trust the UN as far as it can throw it, to mediate and assist in settling disputes. After all, what every nation wants and deserves, is a fair and balanced approach and a voice of reason. Something the UN does not provide.

All members must enjoy NS as much as possible in whatever way makes it most enjoyable for you! Yeh, there is absolutely no UN, but our Alliance is strong! I have followed the acts passed by the U.N even though I never truely agreed with them. Just some people who are part of the U.N don't understand how important it is to have independently unique nations. Most mock at the fact im trying to make a truly independent nation by being a Iron Fist Socialist Goverment nation. Which is far from the ideals of the U.N.

Any country who joins the UN must automatically accept any laws passed through the UN. How can a leader of a country then go back to his or her people and explain that to them? "I'm sorry, we will institute these laws whether you like them or not because everyone else in the world has voted on them." I don't think so. Variety is the spice of life. National soverignty is not something to just toss aside like an old dog. That is what we believe at MMI. That is what we believe at AIS. I have to give you "props" on you writtings. They are well thought out and thourough. I too have not enjoyed the decisions I have seen so far. I've attempted to read past decisions and I admit, they make the right decisions... if they wish to tighten laws. I am a very "loose" person. I enjoy my people to be able to govern themselves through me instead of by me. I'm also new, but I'm learning as fast as I can. I hope that I can become of help through a new union i am creating called the P.U.N. or the People's United Nations. I know I'm not the most knowledgable person around, but give me time to learn and I will be an asset to your "Anti-U.N" movement. I admit, I'm not very Anti-U.N. because I believe in "Each to their own" but I want to help people realize the beauty of the sovereign power. If you are willing to teach me more, I will be willing to help.

The summary below has not been altered in any material way. We have added emphasis in bold to certain portions. THE UN IS NO FRIEND OF ANY NATION THAT RELIES UPON INDUSTRY! This resolution, which looks like it will pass, will handcuff all nations of the UN, even those opposed!! WAKE UP! The UN is overbearing, presumptive, and does not even have its facts straight. [Ask the UN just exactly HOW the North Korean train wreck would have been averted had this MANDATE been in existence. That's right, Syrian intelligence agents reported to be transporting warheads... not exactly double-hull issues huh?] Those who vote against this resolution, but have it thrust against them will have economies which suffer at the expense of its industries. Sure the environment will be better, but that is each countries sovereign right to decide, not a left-wing and green hand of those who dont even care about some countries' struggling econimies! Go ahead, ask the UN exactly HOW this MANDATE will benefit the fishing [would help prevent damage in future], tourism [?], shipbuilding industries , and trucking/transport industries [again, HOW?]. Also, who in their right mind thinks that by avoiding a few spills a year would cause the oil prices to drastically decline? This proposal is not only not well-thought out, an appeal to emotions (who doesn't want to save the cute marine creatures and wildlife?), or based on incorrect and incomplete assertions of fact, it is an out and out MANDATE that will cripple nations' economies.

"Endorse" the use of double-hulled facilities? Sure, it is a MANDATE! Not a suggestion, not an endorsement... IT IS A MANDATE to rob some nations of their prosperity!

A resolution to increase the quality of the world's environment, [b]at the expense of industry.

Category: Environmental Industry Affected: All Businesses Proposed by: 12 Days Till Midnight
Description: SPCC (Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures)

Oil leaks; from out of date pipelines or huge storage tanks/refineries can cause enormous environmental damage. The cost to taxpayers and future generations of the world due to a mass spill on land or at sea could be catastrophic. Millions of barrels of crude oil are lost to the oil-hungry nations of the world each year. We must unite to endorse the use of double-hulled pipelines and storage/transport vehicles worldwide. This would prevent environmental disasters like the one caused by the train wreck in North Korea in 2004, that killed 3000 civilians, or the underground pipeline leak outside San Francisco, where 15 Million gallons of crude oil leaked into the Pacific Ocean affecting between 300 and 600 acres of marshland near Suisun Bay.

Oil storage tanks occasionally leak. The risk of leakage increases as the oil tank ages. If the oil storage tank is underground, a small oil leak may go undetected for a long period of time. When an oil leak occurs, it often contaminates the surrounding soil. In an area such as Long Island, this contamination eventually gets into the underground aquifer that is the sole source of Long Island’s drinking water. Therefore, oil spills in areas such as Long Island and other large cities are considered very serious. In other areas, oil spills are also serious, but may not contaminate the ground water to as great an extent. Oil spill cleanup steps are mandated by regulatory agencies and can be very expensive.

This resolution would be a huge cost the Oil Industry at first, but in the long run ~ would help lower the cost of fuel and lower the cost of environmental clean ups ~ which as we know, are sooner or later passed on to the consumers of the world. This SPCC Regulation Act would benefit the fishing, tourism, shipbuilding industries, and trucking/transport industries.

"Ban Single-Hulled Tankers" was an earlier resolution, passed by the United Nations back on April 25th, 2003 and was implemented on April 28th, 2003.
That resolution had, Votes For: 16664 & Votes Against: 2670

This proposal, is an updated extention of that resolution.

UN RESOLUTION UP FOR VOTE RIGHT NOW

The 40 Hour Workweek
A resolution to reduce income inequality and increase basic welfare.

Category: Social Justice Strength: Significant Proposed by: Free Soviets
Description: 1. The maximum standard full-time workweek shall be set at 40 hours. Nations shall remain free to set their workweeks lower than this.

2. No one may be contractually obligated to work more than 40 hours per week, except for the following exemptions,
a ) military personnel
b ) civil defense forces
c ) civilian emergency response personnel
Excepting military personnel, these exemptions shall only apply during emergency situations.

3. No one may be contractually obligated to remain on the worksite without pay.

4. On call hours shall count against the 40 hour limit.

5. Work exceeding 40 hours per week that is voluntarily undertaken shall not exceed a total of 80 hours per week, and shall be paid at a rate of at least time and a half or an equivalent pro-rata time off in lieu. Nations shall remain free to set their allowable overtime hours lower and their overtime pay rates higher than specified in this proposal.

6. The 40 hour week shall be implemented in a manner that does not reduce the standard of living of the workers. Nations shall enact the laws needed to comply with the 40 hour week within 1 year of the passing of this resolution and they may phase in the changes over the course of up to 4 years. The necessary changes must be fully implemented within 5 years of the passing of this resolution.

7. In time of declared emergencies the national government may suspend this directive to any sector of the workforce it deems essential to the effective running of the country for the duration of that emergency.

Votes For: 6632

Votes Against: 5534

[Delegate Votes]

Voting Ends: Sun May 23 2004

This vote is split right down the middle. How can these dissenting countries actually believe this organization serves their interests? This is a completely pointless endeavor. The UN will disenchant at least half of these 5534 countries with this system.
