In the labratory, a Scintest pressed down a red button. the Mechanized Leg flexed, the Myomers reactig to the electronic Pulse. next he pressed a green button, and the arm flexed. he then examined the 4 foot long, 45 mm Gatling Gun. it was built to specification. capable of spraying out 365 Shells a minute, the gun was a marvel of technology. a cross between Cannons and Gatling Guns. the engine was a Liquid Hydrogen Turbine. quite an achievment.

6 weeks later.
Army Tech Center.

the 10 foot tall armoured robot stood there i it's white, brown and black colors. it had armoured "pads" colored grey, as well as muiltipule weapons. in pods mounted behind the shouldars 2 small missile racks, each containing five missiles where mounted. on it's head was a 10 mm light MG, and in it's hands was a 45 mm Gatling Gun.

the scintest smilied as it destroyed the last of the 3 M-60 Tank Drones.

whats wrong? this is modern Tech (yes, Myomer Strands and Liquid Hydrogen Tubines are modern tech).

Hey, that's not what irks me. I'm space tech.

I just hate walkers. Sorry. I'm a tank guy.

((OOC: Couldn't you have used something better than a Veritech for the picture, though?))

For your information tough, a tank is ALLWAYS superior to a Mecha. When applying same kind of technological level to tanks, it will be superior to a mech in several categories. A tank can have more armor per square meter, a bigger main weapon, it cant fall down, it has less cross surface to give an enemy a target and so on.

Mechs are usefull in some tasks, but they can never steamroll over tanks.

Exactly. I would much rather have my Scimitar MBTs any day (See http://www.freewebs.com/praetonia/ministry_of_defence for more details) Mecha were just made up by sci-fi writers to make their books more outlandish.

I doubt this is modern tech. And I doubt any mech could actually carry a 45mm gatling gun and fire it without breaking it's arms off. And if it was modern tech, it would be extremely clunky and slow. Mechs that would be useful in combat are far beyond modern tech level.

hey, it can only walk at human walking speed.

A mech has more mobility... In this case, the mech has engines for flying...

If the mech is big enough, it could easily steamroll over a tank...

Hehe I would use A-10's or other air craft to take it out .. easly.

This is why I make huge mechs (http://members.cox.net/resicorp/), as well as ones this size for tactical purposes. My big mechs can steamroll over tanks and battleships alike, while my small ones are about the same strength as a couple of tanks and are more used for augmenting forces and such.

YEs while totally awesome mechs still don't work aswell as tanks, even with the massively one sided rules of old classic battletech tanks could still be far more useful. At least they realised that veritechs were a rahter useless idea.
Mechs are useful in situations (like in moutains) but tanks have far more advantages in other feilds (open terrain and mud).

To amke mechs worthwhile you either have make them small (battle armour and maybe upto AT-ST size) or very very big (ie 40k titans, preferably emperor class) anything inbetween just isn't worth it.

I assume this is unpiloted, but that just makes it even worse...

Walking is a very complicated task. This thing will be like a giant toddler, and is likely to trip easily. That's why the only real kind of mechs/powered armor that work are ones that have direct human input, like their legs inside the suit's legs, or have their legs moving and using motion capture to mimic it.

And if it travels at human walking speed, kiss it goodbye. Not as armored as tank+not as fast as LAV or helicopter=RPG food.

We use 2020 tech level powered armor suits called 'landmates' (Light ANthromophic Mobile Armored Tactical Equipment). They're 7-10 feet high, and the pilots legs go down into the suit's knees. The arms are covered by human sized master arms, which are copied by the larger slave arms. Every movement of the operator is copied, and the head and torso are the best protected parts of the body.

Really, bipedal robots or mechs that aren't directly controlled by the human's motions are clunky and slow.
