Concept Testing

The Burnsian Desert Arms Company (TBDAC) is hosting a concept testing seminar. All nations and people are welcome. The concept is a drill-bit mount on a ballistic missile.
"Okay, people," said the discussion leader, munching on a cookie. "How can we implement this in a real-life environment?"

The Imperial States of Hamanistan would like to voice our oppinion in this discussion.
Perhaps, add a timer device on the missile to time the detonation. To use you would just time the missile to a set time to give the drilling bit time to drill through whatever is being drilled through.

But wouldn't it be easier just to have a GPS locator and detonation computer rigged together? Just put in the long and lat, and a city disappears into a sinkhole.

Couldnt you attach something to have it detonate when it reached a certain depth?

That works too, but why?

That was what I was getting at, but then I thought that if you were drilling too deep, then it would null some or all of the blast and its effects. But it would make a decent sized crater.

Yeah. That's a good idea.
But what about oceans?
well...it seems like a silly idea to me.
If you want something to punch through rock, just make your ICBM really big, with a hugeass throw weight and a light warhead.
Then make the areospike out of tungsten or DU.
I mean, you would have to slow down the missile in order for the drill bit to survive at all and still work. I don't think drilling is a viable means for earth-penetrating missiles.

So there's a missilie flying through the air, it starts to drill, then it hits the ground, goes down a bit, ansd then detonates?
Sorry, but that ain't gonna work.
Is this a concept testing area for other stuff as well?

No, it flise through the air, goes into the ground, and tunnels to a target, then detonates under it. Bump.
I'm no engineer, but there are a LOT of things that could go wrong with that. If you want a super earth-penetrator, there are lots and lots of ways you can do it.
Hell, having a kinetic kill satillite network is more plausible than this.

But the sheer terror of having the city sink underneath you...
And there is no plausible defence.
yeah, but you could do that with a small nuke an an earth-penetrating warhead.

That's an interesting article on low-yield earth-penetrating nukes. It's opposed to them, but does provide some interesting information.

But the bomber can be shot down. A missile digging through the earth CANNOT BE DESTROYED, correct?

Many technical problems can arise from this though. It would be more feasable to start it off underground.

Agreed. Possibly a tunnel underground, leading to dirt.
