Hurricane Harold Hits The Coast, Open RP

02-05-2004, 04:08
OOC: Going to gradually build towards the full hurricane. Ships, cities, nations, people, any and everyone is welcome.

IC: And in the weather today, a new tropical storm has appeared off the Southeast coast of North America. Meterologists have named the storm Harold. With winds approaching sixty miles an hour Harold is expected to pass harmlessly a good five hundred miles off the Eastern coast, small recreational craft are advised however to seek safe harbor. The national weather service has declared a hurricane watch for the Eastern seabord and atlantic ocean. EP-3 Orion Hurricane hunters from the IDF Air Force have measured winds in Tropical Storm Harold to be 65 mph and rising. It should be up to hurricane force winds of 75 mph in a few hours to be classified as a cat 1 Hurricane. A shift for winds to send it somewhat west appear likely. Florida and the Gulf are also under hurricane watch. The storm should be a high cat2-low cat3 by Mid-afternoon Monday.

This just in. The Grimdalian navy has issued a hurricane warning for Harold, an upgrade from it's earlier tropical storm status. All craft are advised to seek shelter in the nearest harbor as Harold is expected to run clear up the coast. The Grimdalian Navy and Coast Guard are station ships along Harold's expected route to provide assistance.

OOC: You read Darwin awards too? Awesome.

OOC: yeah, I even sent one in, well my 8th grade study hall did, check the one on page 29 of the 2nd book, it is the fast food fatality at the burger king. The one thing they forgot in the book is that the woman could've walked out of the freezer at any time, but stayed to cover up the crime by staying there as the victim.

They even used our town paper's web site as the source

OOC: Cool, going to wait to see if anyone else wants to join before we take this any further.

OOC: Good idea!

Hattian military cruiser Indefatigable

"Sergei, hurry it up on that engine. That storm is gonna be here soon and we need to get out of here!" Captain Nikolai Andropov strode back to the bridge and peered at the radar. "Damn, we've got about 3 hours or so..." The ship rocked violently as a gust slammed into the ship. He glanced outside to see the radio antennae fly off into the distance. He began to pace back and forth in the cramped room. The engines on his ship had broken down, the radio was gone, and he was in the path of a big storm. "It's just not my day..."

The frigate USGCGS (Unconqured Soldiers of Grimdale Coast Guard Ship) Sailor's Hope plowed through heavy seas, racing along the frontal edge of Harold. Heavy spray broke over her over and raced down her sides, threatening anyone without a secure handhold.

On the bridge Commander Harrington drew heavily on his pipe, clouds of smoke drifting towards the ceiling to be sucked up by an air vent. The crew knew that when the pipe came out, things were going to get interesting in short order.
"Captain, radar reports an unidentified contact off the port bow, bearing 320. Looks like she's drifting sir."
"Any response on the radio?"
"Negative sir."
"Let's move in closer then, and get a report off to base."
"Aye sir."

As the Sailor's Hope closed on the contact further information came in. "Sir, lookouts report she's a warship of some sort, most likely a cruiser."
"Try hailing her with a blinker."
"Aye sir."

"TO UNKNOWN SHIP, THIS IS THE SAILOR'S HOPE, DO YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE, PLEASE RESPOND."

Andropov rummaged through the drawer. He grinned happily and pulled out his flare gun. They had sighted the other ship on their radar, and it should be able to see the flare. He stumbled out of the bridge. The high waves and howling wind forced him to grip the rails. He raised the gun and fired off the flare. He then ran back inside as another huge wave broke over the side.

PGN Armadillo was 20 Miles off the Coast of Grimdale. Captin Greenly and his Fifty strong crew had not heard news of the Hurricane coming towards them.
Suddenly a Message was heard on the Radio:
"If you can hear this Call, then you have Three Hours to get to Port before Hurricane Harold hits. This message is broadcasted by the Grimdale Coastguard Fleet."

"Holy Shit! We've only got a Few Hours to get back to Porlania!"
"But that's a Hundered Miles Away!"
"I know! We're done for!"
"Wait! We can seek shelter in a Grimdale port!"
"ARE YOU CRAZY! IT'LL JEPORDIZE THE ENTIRE MISSION!" Screamed the Captain
"Well, it's either the Mission, or us."
"It looks like we have no choice. Send a message to the Admiralty. Say we are handing ourselves over to Grimdale."
"Yessir!"

In Southern Porlania:

"Transmission just in from PGN Armadillo, Grand Admiral."
"Very well. You can leave."

(Five Seconds Later)

"WHAT!!!!!! I'LL SKIN THAT GREENLY ALIVE WHEN HE GETS RELEASED FROM PRISON!!!!!!"

He took some time to cool down.

"Johnson. What's the nearest ship to PGS Armadillo?"
"Uh, the Morea, sir."
"Good. Tell them to prepare a little suprise for that Snake Greenly!"

Off the Coast of Grimdale:

"What was that? Have our engines gone?"
"Yes Sir, now we can't get to Grimdale without the Coastguard's help."
"Damn! We could've avoided detection somehow but now they have to find us, or we are gone for! Send a Distress call to the Coastguard."

"Engineering, keep engines at full power, helm, set a diagonal course out of the hurricane’s path. And get the lieutenant and his men out on deck. Were going to need to start strapping in that cargo better."

Captain John Curennoy of the freighter S.S. James Novoya pulled out his binoculars, and again looked aimed them out of the rear bridge. In the distance, he could barely see where the storm was worsening. It scared him to death. Despite being in the merchant marines 40 years, and being a captain for 10, Curennoy had never come in close contact with a hurricane.

"Captain, were receiving a distress call on all frequencies from a PGN Amradillo. They say they've lost engine power, and are only about seven miles from our position, sir." Commander Brunswick, second in charge of the freighter, turned from the communication council. "I suggest we attempt to assist. We're an hour or so away at full speed."

The captain swore. They had only two and a half hours before the hurricane hit their position, and he didn't want to be there when it did. But then, it was also his job to help ships in distress. "Alright, Commander. Set a course to assist."

Walking across the room, he picked up the radio, and pressed the microphone. "Grimdale control, this is the S.S. James Novoya, thirty miles off the coast of Grimdale. We are reporting hurricane class winds, forty-foot swells, and high air pressure. We are also detecting a ship in distress seven nautical miles from our position, and are responding at full speed. PGN Amradillo, we are currrently responding to your distress call, and need to know your priority. Do you need towing, or do you wish to be evacuated. Transmit back, over?" The captain put the microphone down, and waited for a response.

Hearing the tranmission, the captain sighed in relief. At least they weren't going at this alone. "Roger that Grimdale Coast Guard, our ETA is one hour at full speed. S.S. James Novoya out."
03-05-2004, 22:33
The Whale and R-76 pulled up alongside the disabled vessel and began to prepare to throw towlines across.
04-05-2004, 08:09
On board PGN Morea:

"Sir, the Admiralty has just sent a Transmission regarding Operation Silent Cloak."
"Yes, what about it?"
"It's what we've always feared sir. A Code Black."
"WHAT? They could find out about Louise! We have to stop them! Set a course for Armadillo Immediatly!"
"Yessir!"

On board Armadillo:

"Help us!" Shouted Captain Greenly "There isn't much time left!"
He jumped on board the Coast Guard Ship with most of his crew, as others went on SS James Novoya.

To Tarqys:
Your offer of help is greatly appriciated, but our own emergency services should be more than capable of handling this natural disaster, however other nations in the area may not be so lucky and if you wish we can clear several airfields for you to base out of for regional response.

The the towlines secured, and the seas kicking up higher than ever, the pair of Coast Guard vessels began the arduous task of escorting both ships to a safe harbor.
04-05-2004, 16:07
On board PGN Morea:

"Sir, we have Armadillo and Three other ships in our sights! Shall we launch the Torpedos?"
"Yes. Kill that Traitor Greenly!"

On board the Coast Guard Vessel, Greenly was sitting on the deck thinking about life in Grimdale. Then, he saw a wave approaching the ship.

"What's that?" He thought. "Wait: TORPEDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!" He screamed at the top of his lungs.

The Torpedo hit the Vessel, tossing it up into the air like a Pancacke.

Then it all went Black................

Currenoy was standing on the catwalk in front of the freigtor's main bridge, watching the warship be pulled away. "Get the coast guard on the radio, ask if they need our help, or whether we can ma..."

The captain was cut off when a large explosion ripped throughout warship, sending crewmembers flying, and almost immediatly destroying the entire port side of the ship. Eyes widening, the captain watched as another explosion toar through the rear of the ship.

Turning, he ran to the bridge, grabbing the radio. "Coast guard vessels, what in the sam hell just happened? We're launching lifeboats to assist crewmembers, over?"
05-05-2004, 02:05
The tug Whale cut it's tow lines as the vessel it was towing went down. The R-76 turned down the torpedo track, active sonar pinging as it search for a target, the crew only just recovering from their surprise as the torpedo ran directly under her shallow draft hull before stirking the disabled vessel, the explosion knocking several of her crew unconscious. Her bow cut like a knife through the waves as she accelerated.
"Commander, we have a firm fix on the target. Dead ahead, depth sixty feet."
"Arm depth charges and torpedos, fire torpedos one and two," And then as they passed over the sub, "Fire depth charges! Radio room, get a report off, under attack by unknown submarine, disabled vessel sunk, moving to engage the target, requesting assistance." A total of sixteen depth charges were either hurtled over the sides or dropped off the stern in addition to the pair of torpedoes already launched.

"Sir! Sixteen depth charges have hit us!"
"Turn back to base immediatly! I trust Greenly is dead."
05-05-2004, 15:51
"Captain the contact is breaking off."
The R-76's commander hesitated for a moment, his instincts screaming at him to pursue the offending submarine until it was sunk. But common sense prevailed, the sea was getting even rougher as the hurricane approached, and there were men still in the water.
"Bring us about, all hands, rescue stations."

"Coast Guard vessels, this is Captain Currenoy, we have six of our eight lifeboats in the water picking up survivors. We suggest all survivors be switched to our vessel due to it's size, and due to the fact that we do have a fully stocked medical bay." Even as the captain said this into the microphone, the last of the six boats dropped into the water, and raced towards the wreckage, where the other five boats were already picking up survivors.

Turning, he couldn't help but grimace at the fact that he was only one of three personel on the bridge. Usually, there were at least five crewmembers on the bridge. Somehow, he doubted this had been in his job description, or in this ship's duty description.
05-05-2004, 19:19
"Acknowledged, recommend you expedite, revised ETA for storm is one hour." The Whale signaled back as the R-76 took up a patrol pattern around the two remaining ships in case the submarine came back.

Greenly looked around. He wondered why everyone was screaming. Then he looked at himself. He was missing his Legs and blood was pouring out the stumps. He looked at the Coastguard and said "Goodnight" and Passed out.
