Military buildup and exploration (space tech)

The Canadian Tundra
02-05-2004, 02:08
The aging President James Verian-Saiyoto announced earlier today that the recently established Tundric Armaments Staryards would begin commission new warships for the Tundric Star Guard. Though numbers for the exact size of the new navy are unknown at this point, it is believed that a substantial naval force will be commissioned as new technologies are discovered in the wreckage of the immense alien vessel that crashed on Faris Island.

Also announced, were a series of rough stats and images of the new units being issued to the army and air forces. These include the Warrior Combat Walker, and the VF-2 Varicon fighter, designated the valkyrie.

To help pay for this massive military buildup, taxes have increased slightly, but also other parts of the military are being transferred or cut. For example, the state of the art wet navy is being cut back on along with the army and even air force to free up funds for the Star Guard. It is expected that the entire military will eventually be divided into different sections of the Star Guard.

The president wanted to assure the internation community that the military buildup is to better improve Tundric defense capabilities and to help propel it into space. As part of this, four carriers with escorts have departed to seek out and make contact with other nations.

'Ontario' or 'Provincial' Class Carrier

The Provincial class of carrier was the first to be developed by Tundric engineers following the recovery of technology from the crashed alien vessel. The first first Provincial to leave the staryards was the CTS Ontario, and thus is often referred to as the Ontario class, although this is not its official designation.

The Ontario left the staryards in secrecy, and no information revealed to the public until its official christening ceremony after its shakedown cruise, which was on December 1st, 2063. The Ontario then took two of the new destroyers and departed for a patrol mission of the Sol system.

The Provincial class fields a large air group of 300 Varicon fighters, although lacks heavy armament, although its missiles give it the ability to hold its own against other warships, and give it long range combat capability. The ship also packs an array of anti-fighter weapons, although it generally keeps several fighter squadrons back for that purpose, and most of its small number of guns are for anti-ship purposes.

Class: Space Vessel
Crew: 1500 crewmen, 600 pilots and air group

Length: 830m.
Width: 216m (central hull), 272m (overall)
Height: 100m.
Mass: 800,000 tons (operational)
Range: Unlimited with fold drive

Armament:
3 x main particle cannon, two on the forward deck, two on the aft flanks, and one on the keel aft.
4 x triple-barreled beam cannon, mounted on the aft thrusters.
2 x torpedo launch system, capable of launching nuclear missiles, in the upper side bodies.
6 x ten-tube missile launcher box, firing defensive missiles.
24 x single barrel anti-fighter cannons scattered over the hull.

Air Group:

300 Varicon fighters
Varying number of small craft (i.e. shuttles, small transports)

'Shadowport' or 'City' Class Destroyer

The City class was the second vessel to be developed with the new technologies acquired from the crashed alien ship. The ship began development only five days after the Provincial and was designed to serve as the mainstay warship of the fleet. The destroyer is officially designated as the City class, but is often referred to as the Shadowport class because the first ship commissioned was the CTS Shadowport.

The ship packs a wide array of weapons, and built purely for war. Although many critics say it is to large and expensive for a mainstay vessel, and that a smaller, cheaper frigate would be a much better choice, military officials stated that with the relative unknown of space, it was best to go with the larger warships until more could be found out about potential threats.

The vessel packs five main particle cannons as its primary armament. However, multiple triple barreled particle turrets provide great firepower as well, and the fourty eight single barrelled beam cannons are an impressive force in their own right, even if each weapon is rather small. The missiles and torpedos are equal to that found on the Provincial, but guns, and not missiles, were the main focus.

Unfortunately, the City class has the unfortunate disctinction of being the first Tundric Star Guard vessel to be destroyed when a surge in the power grid overloaded the reactors and destroyed the vessel, as seen in the image.

Class: Space Vessel
Crew: 1400 crewmen

Length: 840m.
Width: 200m (rear hull), 120m (overall)
Height: 96m.
Mass: 750,000 tons (operational)
Range: Unlimited with fold drive

Armament:
5 x main particle cannon, two on the forward deck, two on the aft flanks, and one on the keel aft.
6 x triple-barreled beam cannon, mounted on the aft thrusters.
2 x torpedo launch system, capable of launching nuclear missiles, in the upper side bodies.
6 x ten-tube missile launcher box, firing defensive missiles.
48 x single barrel defensive beam cannons scattered over the hull.

Valkyrie Varicon Fighter

The Varicon fighter was in development before the alien warship crashed on Faris Island. However, the development was then delayed as the developers awaited eagerly for new technology from the crashed vessel. Thus, although its development was a lengthy one, it resulted in an excellent high performance fighter, and an all around revolutionary craft. The term Varicon stands for Variable Configuration.

The Valkyrie is an impressive fighter, support craft, and ground unit in its three different modes. Combining a blend of speed and maneuvarability with armamanet and armour, it was deemed by one military official as the 'perfect vehicle ever constructed'.

The standard armament consists of missiles and the gunpod, although multiple lasers serve as a point defense system and as rather good weapons. The gunpod is a 55 millimeter gatling cannon and was originally developed as tank weapon, although it was redesigned as a gunpod with the varicon's development.

The bulk of new Varicons are being issued out to the Star Guard's Provincial carriers, although some have found their way into air force hands, replacing the AS-39 Advanced Concept Fighter. However, it is expected that the wet navy will continue its deployment of AS-39s as they are supercavitating sub fighters in addition to air fighters, although a major rebuild which replace the engine systems with the newest fusion systems is underway.

Warrior Class Combat Walker

The Warrior is the direct descendant of the Goliath walker prototypes developed many years earlier. Whereas the Goliath fielded 25mm guns and a missile armament with uneasy footing and rather weak protection, the Warrior is a main battle tank on legs. And the chassis serves as the base chassis of several other combat walkers.

The Warrior's primary armament comes in the form of a pair of heavy beam cannons. Backing these up are missile racks and a pair of gun clusters, along with machine guns near the cockpit. The armament is heavy and impressive, and it easily outguns any other land unit currently in the Tundric arsenal.

Currently, these are being mass produced and are to equip the new Star Guard ground divisions, the core of which is being formed around select army divisions.
