East Phyrric moves

PNN: reporting live from East Phyrric

"Today, all military units that were in East Phyrric today had crossed the border into Lietuveska. All 550,000 troops, 1750 units of armor, the battle fleet, fighters and bombers engaged forces along the border. Movement was fast and fortifications appear to be overran. The naval units commence shore bombardment on military and government installations on the shorelines.

It appears that East Phyrric has been nearly evacuated and real estate is offered for trade. This forward thrust by the military comes as a surprise to this reporter as a defense was thought to be more logical.

We have to evacuate ourselves as our safety is no longer guaranteed.

We have just received word from a military correspondence that this move was in direct reaction to a threat of war from the nation of Lietuveska."

Fighters after the dropping of their ordinance on Lietuveska targets are ordered to proceed to the Pauldustllah outpost for safe haven.

On Epirus I:

"We have just received orders from Corcyra and the forces of East Phyrric are indeed evacuating."

"Prepare orbital bombardment of military bases and infrastructure within East Phyrric."

"We are targeting.....locked sir."

"On my mark, proceed firing sequence."

OOC: I hope you know what you got yourself into. You have attacked me, unprovoked. I never said I was going to deploy any troops across my border, and I was only massing them. My territory is my territory, and with your gung-ho response of an all-out invasion, you will have hell to pay.

IC:

Shock absorbed into the Prime Minister as she read the report from her Minister of Defense. Phyrric was pouring into the country, fighters and all. Lietuveska had never been good at being highly militaristic, and for the first time ever, it was facing an invasion at home. Prime Minister Vladonski shook her head. She had retreated into an underground bunker under the Blått Hus, along with most of her staff. Important personnel all throughout Hvittsted were retreating into underground bunkers as air raid sirens boomed through the still night. Military officials were struggling to put up some sort of missile defense to blunt the attack of the enemy, but it was futile. If Phyrric decided to launch a missile attack on Hvittsted, there was nothing they could do at the present moment.

Meanwhile, nearly 400,000 troops were being called into duty, though it would be hours before any organization could take place. By then, Phyrric could have claimed much of the rural areas of Lietuveska. They had to think quickly...

The Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, and several generals and military officials were seated. PM Vladonski shook her head slowly. "Quite frankly, I'm at a total loss about what to do. Our troops aren't going to be ready for another 10 hours..." One of the generals spoke. "That's very true. However, if we can use our naval and air assets correctly, we will be able to hit Phyrric before they can advance much further. You see, all of our fleets combined have the capability to launch about 6,650 Tomahawk cruise missiles. If we can aim those missiles at Phyrric's offense, it will buy us some time. However, we do need to focus on Phyrric's ships not too far from ours.." Another general spoke up. "But do we really want to do that? If we respond with a missile attack, I'm sure that Phyrric will do the same. Millions of civilians could be killed-" The Minister of Defense interrupted. "Woah, there. We're trying to establish some kind of anti-air defenses now. If we can give a few more hours, we'll have SAM sites laid out surrounding much of Hvittsted, and in some places inside the city. If we can hit Phyrric's troops hard enough, they may be slowed down, giving what chance we've got to rush troops to the front lines." They all nodded in agreement at this, and finally PM Vladonski spoke. "I guess we've got that covered. Now, what to do with our air force? It's not rational to think that we can send them all out at one time." There was silence briefly. Finally, a military official spoke. "Ma'am, I believe that if we launch half of all our fighters, we can defend our cities. I think we should wait until Phyrric's fighters get closer again to strike." This was generally agreed upon. PM Vladonski spoke again, sadly. "I understand that the enemy fighters have taken their toll on several cities..Do any of you know the damages?" One nodded. "It is estimated that thousands are dead, and most of the targeted locations have been leveled. I can't give exact numbers, but the shore bombardments are serious."

--------------------------------------------------
3 hours later

The ships off the coast of Lietuveska began rocking as the unleashed their fury. The waters were not restless as the night air was shaken by 3500 Tomahawk missiles, all flying straight for Phyrric's troops pouring over the border. It was hoped that this could save Lietuveska for now, until more help could arrive and Lietuv troops could settle in.

Other ships began launching 1000 Tomahawk missiles at the enemy fleets. It was a futile attempt, but nothing was useless if it was to hurt the enemy in some way.

We have heard reports of your Navy leaving men to drown and now find this compounded by an all-out invasion. This cannot be allowed to continue and we appeal to whatever sense of decency you hold to withdraw now before it is too late."

Edolia
24-04-2004, 14:08
Encoded Military Communque to the Lietuveskan High Command
"Imperial Edict 216-A has given the Scarlet Legions the authority to mobilize a total of 2.2 million Edolian reservists. We lack the military infrastructure to deploy all such forces to Axackal at this time and if requested, we would be able to, through Riannen, assist the defense of Lietuveska with 600,000 Edolian reservists. Unfortunately, all armored and air units have been deployed to Axackal and these reserve forces will not have Edolian support. As per Edolian policy, however, they will be heavily armed with rocket-propelled grenades, anti-tank weapons, shoulder-fired SAMs and mortars. We hope that these can be of some use to you in the fight against the Phyrric."

---

In the War Room...
"We have done all we can to aid the Lietuv." The Imperator sighed. Edolia had its own problems to worry about. Axackal was being bathed in blood -mostly Allanean, but not a few Edolians had died as well.
"We have Titan guns in Edolia, sir." General Zhang Daming spoke softly. "They can be of some use in eliminating Phyrric. Some twelve Titan-IVs are in range to bombard Phyrric positions in Lietuveska."
"Are they now?" The Imperator looked thoughtful. "That is indeed good news. And for the rest, a strike against Phyrric's orbital stations. Give them everything you have." The last was directed at Sab von Grest, commander of the Edolian Space Command.
"Yes my lord. It shall be done."

---

The twelve Titan-IVs closest to the Riannese border slowly began swivelling towards the South -towards Lietuveska. It took them some minutes to get into the right position -their massive frames moving slowly as they aimed. But then... all were ready. The order was trasmitted to all at once. Fire. Twelve massive barrels belched flames. Twelve massive shells leaped from the barrels... they sailed over the Riannese and Lietuveskan countrysides at blinding speeds. As they neared their strike areas, satellite control took over as the small rockets in the shells steered them towards their targets... Of course, shells of such a large size -each was a meter in diameter- weren't to be easily steered. But whether or not they hit their targets -Phyrric armored spearheads moving into Lietuveska- dead on, their effect was the same. Two meters above the ground, the jets within the shell released their highly inflammable ammonium nitrate and powdered aluminum solution and spread it eighty meters in all directions. Then the shells hit the ground and the tiny warhead exploded... Twelve mini-MOABs struck amongs the Phyrric armored thrust.

Meanwhile, back in Edolia, another twelve shells were being loaded in to the massive Titan guns... By necessity, Titan guns have a very long -five minute- reload time. Their lethal payloads, however, were more than worth the wait.

---

The other eighty eight Titan IV guns in Edolia were also busy, along with every single other Titan. Besides the Titan-IVs, there were also 120 Titan-IIIs, 180 Titan-IIs and 250 Titan-IV superguns. And they were all pointing up... Crews worked feverishly to ready the large anti-satellite shells into the guns. It was done and the guns roared to life. The shells struck the atmosphere and passed out of it quickly. Then, as their casings fell away and their internal missiles appeared, targets on Phyrric orbital stations -especially Epirus I- were made. The powerful computers aboard the anti-satellite missiles took everything into account. The pull of gravity, the mass of the enemy station, its orbit and trajectory. Tiny boosters moved the missiles into the right positions as they hovered eerily in space. And then suddenly their rockets exploded with flame, propelling them forward towards their target. The massive boost was enough to get the missiles moving. Inertia would do the rest and the tiny boosters around the missiles would keep it on target, seeking out the Phyrric space stations...

More missiles were being loaded. The Edolians were busy. The first guns that could be fired again were the Titan-Is with their single minute reloading time...

War had visited Haven and the Edolians were not ones to turn their backs on their allies.

Within 24 hours, the troops would have disembarked, and the following would be ready to defend Lietuveska and crush Phyrrian forces:

In a single camoflagued silo a blast door receeded from the side of the silo to reveal a missile similar to the Firebird ICBM. Electromagnetic rails slowly guided the missile to the launch platform, which then made a forty-five degree twist. Above the missile an iris opened and the platform began to slowly climb to take its place. A second iris opened far more slowly, it was much heavier than the first, to reveal the blue sky to the missile. The launch order was given and the missile began its slow ascent to the heavens.

The missile itself was similar to the Firebird, but it was not an ICBM, it lacked the heat shielding and the payload to be such. Instead, the missile housed sixteen bomb pumped x-ray laser warheads, normally designated to take down incoming ICBMs. The target this time, however, was a space station, specifically Epirus I. Once the missile cleared the atmosphere the ABM warheads detached themselves from their parent launch vehicle. They could have detonated immediately, but instead spread out into a circle and waited the few seconds it would take to bring them into view of their target. Once that happened the warheads detonated and the twelve wave guides in the sixteen warheads turned the x-ray radiation into coherent beam weapons. For one thousandth of a second, nineteen petajoules of energy per laser reached out into a twenty thousand kilometer grid that had the Phyrric battlestation right at its center.

OOC: This is where your intelligence, much that I had provided you with and no longer do so, is erroneous. I have known about your blood thirst for East Phyrric for quite some time now. As I told you before, bite the hand that feeds you, you go hungry. Phyrric has one of the best, if not the best, SDI systems around. This is no secret, everyone in UnAPS, UNAOTO, and other organizations know that Epirus I, the Battle Station, is just a small piece of the SDI system that I have installed. Phyrric has pumped trillions upon trillions of cash into it, been exposed in many threads, and been fairly accepted by all. It was placed above the regions of Antiquity and Haven for that very reason. Edolia knows this and has accepted it. That missile was history the minute it started its climb since I know that anything coming from Scandavian States in a trajectory toward any possible Phyrric targets was hostile. There was no secret about this. It was intended to defend Antiquity and Haven, but now it is intended to defend Antiquity and become one of Havens worst nightmares.

IC:

"Close the range with all Lietuv targets and units. The way to save ourselves from missile attack, let friendly fire take place."

"Order all units to charge ahead, enter all cities, engage all installations and target. Go to hand to hand if we have to. Use their own citizens as a human shield."

Troops continue forward, the fighters make a return trip from Pauldustllah, freshly reloaded to aid the Battle Fleet that is under assault.

On Epirus I:

"Open bay doors 3 and 7. Prepare supply drop to East Phyrric. This may be our only chance to assist them. Change targeting sequence. Open fire on those Titans in Edolia."

On Corcyra IV:

"Turn channels to Phyrric and Haven. Commence electronic warfare. Send message to all Nations:

The regions of Haven and Antiquity are involved heavily in war. Enter regions at own risk. Safety cannot be guaranteed by warring factions. travel should be limited and citizens of foreign nations are not at war with factions and beligerants."

OOC: Corcyra IV is another base, specialized in communications, transmissions and transportation. It was built quite awhile ago, will look for the thread. Weapons are of a defensive nature. No internal bays.

Edwardo Sanchez looked up from other military reports in Allanea, as the aide came in to his room.

"Sir, it's Ricardo Johnson; he needs to speak with you. Loren Smith is here, too. Apparently their messages are related."

"Let Loren in and put me on with Johnson."

As Loren Smith stepped in to the room, Ricardo's voice wafted in from the phone.

"Phyrric has attacked allied positions in Allanea."

Short and to the point, as always mused Sanchez.

"...and Phyrric has also launched an invasion of Lietuveska from their territory in Haven. It is imperative that we launch a counter-strike to protect our allies."

"Well, I will leave that up to you, gentlemen. The declaration of war will of course be mine. Is there anything more?"

"Nothing else that you need to know," Ricardo said, the edge in his voice revealing how on the edge he was, just at the moment.

"Good, then," Sanchez said, and hung up. "Now, Loren, I'll need some more details..."

Mintar's Declaration of War on Phyrric:

Due to unprovoked attacks on our allies, Mintar officially declares the nation of Phyrric a rogue state, and an enemy of the Republic and its people. The use of force has been authorized to protect ourselves and our allies from further harm from this state.

----

Mintar:

With much of its air force on active duty, Mintar could only quickly muster a fraction of what would be needed to remove the enemy soldiers. However, Mintar was hardly unprotected. Thousands of DTS-2 and other missile systems had been set up around the country and troops were being mobilized to aid Lietuveska...

Around the country, cities were filled with anti-Phyrric protests, and the police had to be called out to protect the safety of some phyrric citizens.

Armed with balloons and flowers, the people of Mintar were ready to see their soldiers off.

Now, why do you say this...unprovoked?

Since your attack on The Island States, I have been considering options. I have finally decided that I, along with other UnAPS nations, will attack East Phyrric in Haven. Riannen and I directly border and encircle East Phyrric. I will not be making a topic until a moderator begins refereeing the main war thread. However, I am requesting all information you have on East Phyrric, such as terrain, population, cities, military equipment, troop numbers, etc. I would greatly appreciate a map as well.

I have not declared war on your nation, but I will begin massing troops on the border. If you are to take this as an act of war, it will be you who are the aggressor, and it will be you who will take responsibility for whatever conflict shall arise.

I have known about a pending attack on East Phyrric. You just confirmed the Intel I already had and gave me a target and cemented my options. You, my old dear ally, are to blame for this one. The attack on Island States is just an excuse, the attack has been planned by UnAPS for awhile.

Secret Transmission to the Phyric Government

"It has long been known that the Empire and Phyric have had a relationship dating back to the Dark Terror-Fluffywuffy war, many years ago. It appears we will soon be allies in the war against UNAPS and because of this we would like to donate 100 of our CAS aircraft to support your nation in this time of war. At a later time it is likely that we will be able to further support your nation, most likely with more air support, but at this time most units are assigned and the donation of such numbers of newly developed aircraft is a strain. I personaly hope that you find the aircraft useful in the possible war. Good luck, and godspeed."

Phyrric, you and I damn well know that TG was OOC. I'm sorry if the information bounced around in your head instead of triggering in that little spot where your brain is, but you should use a little more common sense than what you did.

IC:

The troops had rushed to the frontlines, and were fighting courageously. They had dug in positions, entered buildings of cities closest to the fighting, and were desperately trying to hold off the advancement of Phyrric's troops. It was a tough fight, and the Lietuv troops knew they were losing it. They did not give in, however, and still tried best they could to save their country. Nearly 10,000 troops had already died, mostly from artillery fire and bomber attacks, as well as numerous armored assets. 150 fighters had already been destroyed. Things were not looking good..

Meanwhile, in Hvittsted

The underground bunker was not crowded, but the Prime Minister's staff, advisors, and ministers were holed in. She and several generals were trying to get a grip on how to handle the situation. "Ma'am, this is not looking good at all. If our allies don't hurry up, the last stand we'll have is going to be this city, and with Epirus I hovering above Haven, we are in high danger. That damn thing could blast us to hell, and we may not have much longer." Lashira sighed. She was not trained for this kind of thing, and was actually considering handing power over to one of her generals. Lietuveska would probably fall soon, but until the darkest hour, she would try to lead her country to victory. "Very well. We must continue our fight..Order all units to slowly fall back to Hvittsted. If we can, fortify cities along the way. They will act as barriers..I think we need to go on defense completely. Forget about offense, gentleman. Phyrric is trying to use our citizens as human shields, and I have never faced such a situation before. We have got to act, and we have to do it fast."

The mood of Hvittsted was tense. Power was running, but all citizens had been demanded to not turn on any lights, and to cover their windows with curtains, blankets, and anything else. Strict curfews were set in place, and citizens could only exit their homes during the hours of 10 AM to 5 PM. Tanks and other armored units rolled through the streets at all hours of the day, and all police personnel were on 12-hour shifts. Troops had fortified buildings around the city, and had established many checkpoints. Also, about 200 mobile SAM sites had been sucessfully placed, and were fully ready. Hvittsted was about the only place in Lietuveska that could guarantee any sense of security. Two fleets sat right offshore, in the bay area where Akiros had control of most of the islands. The enemy had not yet gotten their naval units in this area, and it was being secured as well. Thousands of underwater mines were being layed, and warnings were being sent to all maritime craft within 200 miles to not venture near the area. The only flights above Hvittsted were military and high-profile aircraft that were transporting mail or top government officials. Other than that, flights over Hvittsted were nonexistant. Violaters had 4 minutes to turn course or suffer being shot down. Hvittsted was safe, for now.

The Island State's Strategic Forces manned their stations at certain points within the country. Near the missile silos, large nuclear power plants went to 100% output (up from it's standard low output), and the power began to store up inside several large buildings. In them, crews began to use their radars to scan the skies, looking for Phyrric's satellites.

"Sir, we have the Epirus I on screen," A Lieutenant said to his superior, 2-star Strategic Forces General Clayton.

"Lock lasers and fire." All across TIS, 100mW lasers turned and fired into the orbital path of the battlestation, their lasers firing at 2 second pulses (with 10 millisecond pauses) into the sky, radars and computers guiding the fire so that the Epirus I would run right into it.

25-04-2004, 20:08
500 Feline Elite Commandos are being dispatched to keep the peace. They will station themselves directly inbetween the two opposing armies. Either side will have to get through them, their wheeled utility vehicles, their maglev scout vehicles, and two MLRS-style units before they attack.
-------------

In the real effort to keep the peace, a group of four DOECO (Department of Espionage and Covert Operations, our intel service) agents flew across the Haven continent in a helicopter model common around the world. They were armed with generic weapons, also common. Nothing indicated them to be from Feline. Underslung beneath the helicopter was several tons of generic, commonly used, plastic explosive.

They flew out to an isolated spot near a strategic location that was not being attacked yet. They laid down the explosives, landed the helicopter, and activated a self-destruct mechanism. The massive explosion would serve to divert forces away from the battle, at least temporarily.

They quickly ran off into the woods. They were dressed as Lietuveskans, and all spoke fluent Lietuveskan. They had to make it to a port on the other side of the country, and get aboard a freighter secretly operated by the DOECO. The operation was risky- very risky, but it was felt it had to be done.

Agent Jennifer Parker hiked through the wilderness, along with Charles Godfrey and Edwin Schneider. They were some of the best agents the DOECO had to offer. They were dressed in typical middle-class clothing, and carried a large amount of money with them, but not too large as to attract attention. They walked to a highway. Parker said to the others, "I suppose we have to hitchhike it to the port." They began trying to hail down a passing car, yelling out in Lietuveskan that they needed a ride.

Inside East Phyrric, at the docks...

"...Sign here, sir." the captain of the Merchant Freighter Ilse Tranh said, passing over the manifest of delivery. Large containers marked "Ia Drang Industries", "An-Loc Power Systems" and "Hong Agricultural Ltd." were being unloaded in plain view of god, spy sattelites, and whatever agents of whatever governments have agents in the port.
At the next pier over, a 2-million-ton fuel carrier, also an NK flagged ship, was being unloaded by mobile pipeline system, while a "Pleasure Cruise" vessel homeported at China Beach in Nuevo Kowloon discharged brightly-coloured tourists in loud Hawaiian shirts. LOTS of them.

A smart observer would notice that the NK tourists were all between 19 and 35, with a predominance of healthy young men, one fourth of the tourists wore heavy, dark, goggle-like sunglasses and too much sunscreen, and seemed to find the afternoon sun to be uncomfortably warm. (Sunscreen discolours when you sweat heavily).
There seemed to be a large number of Musicians-long, heavy-looking guitar cases (but no amplifiers), big, old-fashioned "Steamer Trunks" with stickers and grafitti, and large suitcases.
These happy vacationers stopped at Customs, and formed their ques without complaint-in fact, the lines were undeniably ordered and neat-almost military in their precision.

From the Customs check-in, they boarded chartered busses from several tour-companies, and were taken from the port, to a set of hotels down town.
The busses ran all day-from the port, to the hotel.
It's been going on for three days now.

15,000 happy vacationers with short haircuts, passed through customs with remarkable speed...carrying big suitcases and Musical Instruments that weren't opened at the port.

Happy Vacationers from a Neutral country that has ties to Phyrric going back to the Alexander incident.

Nuevo Kowloon is NOT officially involved in the conflict...

The Nuevo Kowloonese' best asset militarily, is their light infantry. NK Light Infantry from the First Armoured Division (The Plague Rats) were heavily involved in the fighting in Corcyra during the Antiachus revolt-Their scout elements entered the city and stayed there for three weeks before the main force landed-three weeks unobserved. [ooc- see "Sink the Alexander"]

Infantry weapons can be hidden in steamer-trunks and guitar cases.

NK's aren't known for their Musical talents. They're known for being very, very, good shots, and using rifles that fit a doctrine of long-ranged small-arms engagements with big, high-powered, deep-penetrating, bullets. After Corcyra, they were also briefly known for using bayonets against submachineguns-to prevent civilian casualties.

SUCCESSFULLY. [ooc: see "Sink the Alexander" again...]

(unlike their "record" in Naval battle-which, apart from a dust-up with the Austians, hasn't been one of sparkling success...)

Inside the East Corcyra Hilton, 1900 hours, Day Three, "Meridian Room" banquet hall...

Colonel Thomas "Harry" Wu straightened his shirt, and folded his laptop closed. "Any trouble on the way here?" he asked Battalion Lt. Colonel Jess Rowe. "No Sir, the trip went right as-planned. The lads rather enjoyed the trip-riding a Liner's a hell of a lot nicer than a Troop Carrier."
Wu snorted, "Well, you can tell 'em to shake off the R'n'R, We're to send the Recon units out to the Border by the Third, and have 'em start the Infil ops by the sixth. Armour's got 'till the tenth to be squared away-General Huang thinks the Chancellor won't be able to keep this quiet for much longer, and I agree-how many brain cells do you need to figure out that there's a Division just unloaded in East Corcyra to fight for the Phyrricians?"
Rowe looked thoughtful, "Not many-it might've been different if we'd used more than the one port..."
Wu shrugged, "We should've, but it was a rush job, and the enemy's supposed to have pretty good intel-I guess someone figured that the one port's easier to keep quiet than five or ten... plus, it's easier on the Phyrricians if they only have one port-authority to sit on and keep quiet, instead of five or ten."
Rowe shrugged. "What time is move-out, sir?"
Wu sighed, "Midnight to Zero-Three, running blackout in civvie vehicles out of the city, rendezvous is Here-" He showed the Lt. Colonel a map, "With the locals. From there, you'll get the order on where you're going, and who you're supporting for the next few weeks. Mission's pretty much what you'd expect, though-spotting for arty and marking targets ahead of the Armoured units, that sort of work-all midnight for now, these guys've got good gear, so no funny stuff." he handed Rowe a packet of orders. "go brief your guys, use the Cedar Hall on the third floor."

IC: Attack on Epirus I

"Damage report!" yells the captain.

"We have damage on pods 4 and 5 and on deck 23-31 on the main core."

"Seal and lock the main corridor that runs in that area. Evacuate all craft and personnel from pods 4 and 5. Inform all Nations that are docked to Epirus I to evac immediately."

"Sending messages, we have more incoming"

"Brace for shock! Prepare to return fire. Target the weapons generators and power plants in Island States, Fire when ready."

The Battle Station gives a slight shimmer.

"We have a hull breech on decks 24-30 to levels 3 and 4. The troop quarters are gone in that area sir, estimated 500 dead from that last hit."

"Are the weapons still online?"

"yes sir"

"Then fire them!"

A small ball of energy exits pods 1, 3 and 7. They enter the upper atmosphere and join into a larger ball, speed picks up and the energy slams into its intended target.

Sorry about the late post, did not see that attack there.

The shock struck the surface, damaging the coolant towers and causing heat to build up within the underground reactors.

A Staff Sargent ran up to his supervising Lieutenant. "Sir, we gotta power the reactor down and switch to the backup coolant line. If we're not so lucky, we'll have to hope the liquid sodium coolant will press the reactor parts together, keeping any radioactive material from escaping."

"I hope you're right."

"Sir, we have a bigger problem."

"Spill it, soldier!"

"Missile Silo Complex Alpha-Bravo 10 is offline because of our reactor problem. We cannot fire 10 of our Red Arcassium 25mT nukes."

"Get the reactor operational and see about getting emergency power from the Asherton Ridge Nuclear Power Facility."

6x100mW lasers destroyed
54x100mW lasers still operational

Power plant for Alpha-Bravo 10 is on alert for possible emergency shutdown. Emergency power can be rerouted in 6 hours.

Epirus One...

Dr. Marilee Huang of the University of New Hue felt the shockwaves as the station was hit. She was there with a few colleagues, working with the Phyrricians on scientific research as part of a sponsored-exchange programme. "What's going on?" she asked a Station officer, Lt. Kiley, as he ran past. "Go to the core of the station, Ma'am-we're under attack." he told her.
A flash, and suddenly, the wall was gone, and stars blinked unshielded by glass. The air roared out, and she was floating.
strange... she reached down, and saw red frost flying away. Her lungs bursting, she looked down-and realized her legs were missing.
agony flashed through her body, and she saw her last breath crystallize in front of her eyes as the pressure inside pushed them open.

President Newman took the podium after being briefed on the possibility that scientists died onboard Epirus I:

The scientists were on a space station built for war that was firing on someone. It was expected that someone would fire back. By remaining onboard during the conflict, the scientists put themselfs into a situation that meant risking their lives, and unfortunately they paid the price. However, if the country these people claimed citizenship from wants our sympathy, they are asking the wrong people. I will not answer questions...

Steps of the Chancery, Nuevo Kowloon, shortly after the Island States press conference.

Chancellor Amanda Ngo is leaning on her cane, behind a stand with several microphones. She looks tired.

"...yes, I heard what they're saying. The flight-data recorders recovered don't hold those claims up-the Island States engaged a station that is military-true. Epirus One was put up in part to defend their region-and them, from attack, and it's operated under military jurisdiction-but it's also a multinational port-of-entry, and the most complete orbital laboratory facility available.

What the Island States did, was declare war on someone, then initiate battle against them. Their actions were based on waging a war of aggression, and the need to blind the Phyrricians' forces before carrying it out would, by necessity, include attacking an orbital facility. If we pulled our people out of every location that had the potential to be a military target, well..."

She snorts, "I guess we'd have to empty every embassy, every foreign port, and every foreign city on earth of our people." She leans on the mike-post, and smacks the top with her cane, "The Isolationist Party, and their Communist backers would love that, no doubt." ome of the Reporters laugh, and she continues.

"Nothing doing, folks-We're not pulling back into our national shell just because of some trigger-happy near-morons. The Legion of Defense treaty, and the Treaty with Phyrric, remain in force, and will continue to do so. We will persist in supplying East Phyrric with Humanitarian Aid, and we will continue to trade with those nations that are not at war with us. The Self-Congratulatory bullies and Psychotics in UnAPS be damned-we've faced worse, and we're still here." She put the cane down, and leaned upon it. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go talk to those political thugs in the Assembly about why we aren't going to declare a war over this and several other recent events."

The Chancellor hobbles off, managing to look both dignified, and determined, even dragging an oxygen bottle on a cart behind her.

After a moment, the picture changes to a commentator, in this case, Susan Liu, a perky 30-something anchorwoman.

"...and there you have it, from the Chancellor's own mouth, Sam, what's your analysis of Madame Ngo's comments?"
Sam Trung, a fortyish man with greying hair, smiles, "Well, Susan, since the attempted assassination two years ago, the Chancellor has been much harder to predict. Certainly her open reluctance to enter the Haven war has something to do with last week's elections. As you know, the Isolationists swept three key districts, picking up five seats in the Assembly, and two in the recently reconstituted Senate. I'd say she's in trouble."

the screen divides, showing another man, this one wearing heavy, dark, sunglasses in dimly-lit studio. The screen shows the audience that this is Senate Majority Leader Robert "Bob" Dinh Diem, of Ia Drang. "I disaggree Sam-if the last twenty years has shown us anything, it is that the Chancellor's foreign policies are often rooted in a prudent reluctance to commit until the right time. I would say that there are probably forces already in the Haven region, analyzing the situation and developing information before any formal commitment is made."

Sam shakes his head, chuckling. "Bob, I know you were on the ground during the Phyrric Civil war, but I'm telling you-the Chancellor's not ready to go to war this time-the mood of the people won't allow it, hell, she's already had holes punched in both her lungs over foreign affairs!"

Bob makes a dismissive gesture, "Sam, I know you were just about dancing at the Communist Meeting Hall when the election-returns came in, and I know you'd love to make hay on this-but the Chancellor taking careful steps is very different from the Chancellor being in fear of your backers because they tried-and failed- to kill her once before. The question is still open whether or not we're going to go to war, and Susan, you watch that tape carefully-Chancellor Ngo may be talking peace to my distinguished collleagues in the lower house, but I think the calls of the people are clear, and she'll hear them-it's one thing to lose a few soldiers, but these were astronauts, not soldiers. I know that in my office, I'm getting fifty calls a day demanding we do something about this, and Senator-Professor Herbert London's been getting it from his voters in An-Loc and the surrounding areas-the Urban voters want action, even if the Rural voters don't."

[ooc] Not my fault if Phyrric rattled a sabre at you after you declared war on him-and it's not my fault that you didn't bother to see if there were civilians on that station. (Hint: Mine weren't the only ones-or the only ones killed and injured...) From an in-character perspective, my people think/believe you fired pre-emptively, as in, without warning. It's the information they got, and it jibes with what the survivors reported back, and what the cockpit recorders of the (very small and somewhat primitive) shuttle they were working on recorded.

You don't like being put in a bad light? Too Bad. Epirus One is a point-of entry to at least two different regions (you should ask Phyrric which.) That means it's not "Just" a military station. It's the same as firing on Norfolk Virginia just because there's a Navy Yard there-it may be tactically sound, but that doesn't make Collateral Damage any less your fault.

consider: Lietuveska was massing troops on the border and had cut diplomatic relations off with Phyrric. yes, he pre-empted an invasion. However, the NK's aren't all that concerned about the UnAPS alliance, since it was clearly fragmenting. The Island States launched the attack-and did so before the personnel the NK's had up there could be evacuated. (remember, lots and lots of damage in NK-the scientific team was pretty much stranded up there until something could be sent to bring them back...) since this "alliance" was fragmenting, each nation's actions are being taken as that nation's actions, not as an Allied Whole.
