South Korean newspapers report that there is a possible coup attempt being conducted by members of the North Korean 2nd Infantry Division, stationed in the city of Sinuiju, just across the border from the Chinese city of Dandong. According to one South Korean newspaper, the division seized the rail and road links between the two countries, cutting off a vital link of food, fuel, medical supplies, and other goods from China.

It is also reported that the 5th and 6th Infantry regiments have moved out and secured the surrounding countryside and some reports have the city of Taegwan either captured by the 5th regiment or under attack by it. It has also stated that the city of Kusong has also come under attack and the majority of the city has fallen to a combined assault by the 4th infantry regiment and elements of the 2nd artillery regiment and some T-54 tanks of the armor battalion assigned to the division.

Both international and domestic telephone links to the area have apparently been cut off by either the rebels or the Korean government, however, a relay link of the shortwave radio station - the Voice of Korea - went off the air for several hours but later returned to the airwaves, relaying the same information as the main Voice of Korea frequency and transmitters were.
