Iraq announces amnesty

18-04-2004, 05:33
Today, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein issued a directive announcing "amnesty to all people, including deserters from the military and political enemies of the elected Iraqi government."

At the Iraqi embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, Iraqis flocked to the embassy to get their passports stamped with re-entry visas. The Iraqi government has also announced that it will be allowing airlines to fly in at more times free of charge for the next two weeks, so that those that wish to come back to Iraq can find transport by air cheaper.

May we ask why the president has adopted such a radical policy?

Personally I think this is a plot to get all 'political enemies' back into the country before killing them - why send out secret service agents when you can get the people you're after to come to you?

This simply looks like a 'honey-trap' operation on an international scale. Kelonia has urged any Iraqi nationals living within our borders not to return to the country until it is clear exactly what is going on. Seems to me Good Ol' Saddam's just trying to wipe out all his enemies again - The new campaign against the Kurds (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=139314) and now this sudden benevolence to 'deserters' and 'political enemies'? That's suspicious :P

OOC: You know, for people who don't know, Saddam announced several of these amnesties in real life. The last one was in October of 2002 when he won 100% of the vote in the election. And a lot of people did flock to go back to Iraq.
