IC:

The Ministry of Defense announced today that all leaves in all branches of service, including Fedayeen Saddam and the Republican Guard are cancelled and that all soldiers are to report to their units within forty eight hours. It announced that leaves were suspended indefinately.

Some 60,000 reservists have also been called back into active service and are being assigned to fill out units and work in independent units. In Baghdad, there has been some increased presence of the military, but it is not much increased from its average non-existant profile in the city.

Outside of Baghdad and several major cities, barbed wire and fortifications were being built by the "People's Army", the popular militia of the Arab Ba'ath Socialist Party of Iraq. Iraqi media, both internal and external broadcasts have seen a marked increase in patriotic programs, including music and praise for President Saddam Hussein.

In the last seventy two hours, the government of Iraq has repeatedly denounced the "allies of criminal mercenaries", meaning those Kurds who fight against Iraq, namely the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

It is also reported that Iraqi aircraft have entered above the 36th parallel, violating the old northern fly zone for the first time in many years. A squadron of MiG-23 fighter bombs entered the zone and proceeded to drop four 200lbs. bombs on a KDP HQ located just outside the town.

KurdSat, the official satellite channel for the KDP, declared that "Iraqi aircraft have violated Kurdish airspace and attacked a Kurdish base just outside of Kifri. The aggression by Saddam Hussein must be halted." It also showed a building that was destroyed and a small crater located some 25 meters from the building.

The Iraqi Minister of Defense, General Sultan Hashim Ahmed al-Tai, declared that "operations to free Iraqi Kurdistan from the yoke of the outsiders has begun. We expect to free Kurdistan within two weeks."

OOC: Crushing the Kurds, eh? So much for them being "completely integrated into Iraq". I suspect a large coalition will mobilize.

OOC: Iraqi Kurdistan is Iraqi. Iraq cannot be complete without all of it being under one ruler. :)

IC:

Early in the morning of the 15th of April, the Iraqi 15th Infantry Division and 3rd Armored Division moved out of their regular frontlines near Khanaqin and moved toward the city of Kifri, just on the frontlines. After an initial heavy trade of fire between Kurdish forces and Iraqi troops, the armor and infantry broke through and quickly entered the suburbs of the small city of Kifri. After an intense thirty minute firefight with KDP forces, Iraqi troops seized control of the city. Villages and other small towns in the area were seized by the two divisions and by evening, Iraqi forces had taken some 45 kilometers of territory, taken some 1,500 prisoners, and had taken light losses themselves. Some 12 tanks were damaged, destroyed, or had a breakdown of somesort, of this, 10 were T-55s, and 2 were T-62s. Some 126 soldiers were killed and another 55 were wounded.

For the second time, Iraqi helicopters also violated the northern no fly zone and sent helicopters to destroy the KurdSat broadcast studios just outside of Suleimaniya. In all, 12 Mi-24 helicopters were sent and one was destroyed due to malfunction. KurdSat ceased broadcasting at exactly 12:31 AM local time and has not returned yet. KDP has released statements stating that an unknown explosion had taken place at the satellite broadcasting studio and an investigation was underway.

Iraqi ground forces continued their assault into KDP territory starting early in the morning at 4:30 AM. During the night, two Republican Guard divisions - the 7th Mechanized "Adnan" Division and the 2nd Armored "al-Medina" Division. In addition to these forces, some 7,500 Fedayeen Saddam men have also been committed to the assault, and the remaining division of the 2nd Corps - the 34th Infantry Division.

The assault proceeded northeast in nature, towards the cities of Sulaimaniya and Halabja. Iraqi helicopters and aircraft provided close support to the advancing forces. Approximately 250 artillery guns had been brought in during the night and was used to bomb the new frontline positions of the Kurdish militia.

Fighting had been light, as many of the Kurdish positions just cracked under the pressue of artillery, aircraft, and tank forces. By mid-day, Iraqi forces had reached the outskirts of Sulaimaniya and Halabja. Halabja was taken without a fight within an hour, but Sulaimaniya held on. KDP forces had all retreated to the city. Bombing and artillery of the shelling continued throughout the day and night and Iraqi forces ceased their forward assaults by sun down.

At the same time, the Iraqi 5th Corps smashed into the PUK lines around Arbil and pushed forward. Within an hour, they had reached Arbil and the city was captured by noon. It was the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, but no longer. Iraqi forces continued to assault the Kurds and seized the cities of Koy, Ranya, Shaqhawa, Akra, and is in heavy fighting in Qala Deza.

The whole days losses amount to very little. Some 546 soldiers were killed and some 1,194 wounded. Some 28 tanks were knocked out or damaged but repairable, including 12 T-55s, 12 T-62s, and 4 T-72s. The T-72s and 8 of the T-62s were repairable. Some 6,340 Kurds were killed or wounded in the fighting and another 870 were captured. 700 of them were executed and the remainder were sent to jails in Mosul and Kirkuk.

(no one would know about the execution.)

A transmission is sent to Al Anbar:

We would like to assist you in your war against the Infidels. We will send 200 men, ready to die for your cause. We will make sure they die with utter dignity in your campaign against imperialists attacking your interests.

We hope our assistance will lead to better relations between our nations. Perhaps we can make a deal... I send men to help you, and you give me oil.

Two C-17s are dispatched to Al Anbar, carrying the men. They fly low, to Yemen for refeuling, and then up, through the Persian Gulf, and land at Baghdad International Airport. The men file out of their planes, and report for duty.

ooc: Give me orders. What'll it be, suicide bombings? mortars on enemy positions? RPG ambush?
