Could you please specify the "exercise?" Will it be actual combat or merely patrols? The Commonwealth is interested but must know the details first. Thank you.

The exercise will be similar to the infamous Island 315 exercise with Doujin, which was a pitiful defeat for Feazanthian forces. This will be a combat exercise, but with no live ammunition. All shells will be replaced with targeting lazers to confirm the hit, and all missiles shall be replaced with dummy warheads to prevent significant damage. Any ship or plane that is 'killed' shall leave the exercise zone immediately. We will have airfields set up on a nearby island for all defeated planes to land.

I would not like to perform an exercise against the whole fleet, just a small part of it. I want to see how my JXN's perform in a raid against a carrier group. Do you accept?
I will use a *lot* of JXN's. That's how they are supposed to be used though.

We would like to test our two Akula-II experimental type 1 (Akula-IIs with extra quieting and a modified OK-540 reactor plant from an Alfa) against, say, 6 ASW ships and a pair of subs, or whatever you see fit.

We would also like to test the following:

2 Akula-II
2 Akula-Ii
4 Oscar-II

against a CVBG, if you are agreeable.

Jordaxia and DontPissUsOff, sorry but we are really looking for a full-scale exercise, not a small scale exercise.

Sarzonia, we shall do the large-scale exercise first, then conduct the smaller one. Is this acceptable?
Jordaxia
14-04-2004, 13:11
Well. I was thinking of deploying about 8000 JXN's againt you.
(I really can.) I am a good RP'er (I think) and have been building these for some time now. I have a total of 24,000 JXN's.
But it probably would be a little small scale.

Confirmed, Sarzonia. Exercise shall take place in international waters, approximately 800 miles away from the borders of Roubhe in the antarctic sea. Feazanthian fleet is en-route.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Admiral Wallace stared at the large, three dimesional radar screen. He was bored.
"Asoka, this is Dhukka. Any sign of them?"
The reply was crackled. The storm to the south was playing hell with their communications.
"Negative, Admiral. Nothing yet."
"Keep sending those AWACs out. When they arrive, I want every plane in the air."
"Asoka, aye."

On the bridge of the U.S.S. Ranger, a lieutenant manning the radar station noticed a small blip in the outer reaches of the console.

"Admiral, over here!"

The lieutenant's shrill, cloying voice broke Admiral George Nelson out of a silent reverie, where he was basking in his new rank as the first full admiral in the Sarzonian navy and in the technology behind the Ranger, easily the pride of the navy.

"What is it?" Nelson asked.

"By the radar signatures, it looks like aircraft, possibly spy planes."

"The Feazanthians!" Nelson said. "Sound general quarters! Order the Rampage to lock its anti-aircraft missiles on the targets and launch the Red Squadron!"

"Aye sir."

The Rampage's anti-aircraft missiles locked onto the distant targets and the Red Squadron of F16s screamed off into the air on an intercept course. Meanwhile, the Sarzonian fleet began to move into battle formation.
Feazanthia
15-04-2004, 16:36
"Admiral! We have confirmation from Skyeye squadron. Sarzonian attack fleet inbound! They've launched fighters, sir. Look like F-16s."
"Verify range to closest target."
"Approximately five hundred and fifty nautical miles, sir."
"Just inside our range." Wallace opened a channel to the fleet. "This is Admiral Wallace. We have encountered our enemy. Targetting data is being uploaded. Fire as soon as you have a hard lock. Alpha, Mojo, and Omega squadrons are cleared for launch and intercept. That is all."

The plates of metal covering the myriad Tomahawk anti-ship missiles carried by Feazanthia's numerous destroyers and cruisers retracted. One by one, the ships launched their payloads at the Sarzonians and reloaded.

Aboard the carriers, 25 RF-11 Archanels, 25 FA-2 Harriers, and 25 AF-X1B Comets powered up and launched, heading towards Sarzonia's F-16s. The other squadrons prepared to be deployed as well.

As the Red Squadron hurtled toward the Feazanthian navy, squadron commander Lt. Ben Wilcox noticed the anti ship missiles beginning to fire. He ordered Lt. Jon Russell to separate with a squadron to intercept the missiles. The remaining jets in Wilcox's group fired anti-aircraft missiles.

Despite Russell's group's best efforts, three anti-ship missiles streaked past his group and connected with the battleship Keokuk. The Keokuk sustained major damage to its lower gun turret and its communications tower was disabled. A simulation of a fire broke out in Deck 18.

"Damage report!" yelled the ship's Captain, Bryon Chamberlain.

"Turret two is out. Communications disabled. We've got a fire on Deck 18!" yelled Lt. (jg) Skye Chandler.

"Damage control crews report to all affected decks immediately!" Chamberlain ordered.

"In range?" Chamberlain asked.

"We are, but we can't use Turret 2. Turret one has one gun inoperational."

"We'll just have to make do without it." The turret moved into position, getting a lock on its targets.

"Targets locked sir."

"FIRE!"

The Siddhartha was hit by the broadside, destroying two of its 8-inch guns and damaging one of its screws.

"Admiral! They shot down our missiles before they could connect."
"Blast. I thought it would come to this. Send out Rapier, Sabre, and Iceman squadrons."

Another 25 Archangels, 25 F-18s, and 25 F-14s launched from their carriers, firing their AMRAAMs and PHEONIX missiles at the Sarzonian squadrons.

"This is Admiral Wallace to all ships. Set fire control to saturation mode. Targeting data uploading now."

He unlocked the large, red button on the Dhukka's tactical console and pressed it, resetting the fire controls so that they would fire ever missile in the tubes.
"FIRE!"

2,498 Tomahawk anti-ship cruise missiles with high-explosive warheads lifted off and headed towards independant Sarzonia targets, 48 warheads per ship.

With just two fighters from the Red Squadron and half the Blue Squadron of fighter jets remaining, the fighters joined the Black Squadron from the Stevens and the Gray Squadron from the Freedom to coordinate their next attack. Lt. Commander Bryan Johnson -- the commanding officer of the Black Squadron -- ordered the re-convening fighters to target the anti-ship cruise missiles. He ordered Ensign Harley Jacks to return to the Ranger with the reconnaissance.

The Gray Squadron targeted the new round of attack planes and the Black Squadron launched anti-ship missiles against the ships in the vicinity [OOC: We'd have no way of knowing which ships they are, so I'm not going to say we're specifically targeting the Siddhartha and the Dhukka; all the pilots know is they look the most vulnerable. That's who they're shooting at].

Meanwhile, the submarines Penchant, Shakespeare, and the Jules Verne readied attack positions.

"Targets locked sir," the ensign told the commander of the Penchant.

"Fire."

The Penchant shuddered momentarily with the force of the launching of the torpedoes toward the biggest of the enemy targets. The Shakespeare also launched a bevvy of torpedoes while the Jules Verne monitored for any sign of the three submarines being spotted.

Despite the reconstituted squadrons' best efforts, one anti ship missile hit the Poseidon and four hit the Essex, sinking the latter vessel and causing a leak in the former's engine. The Poseidon readied its two front turrets of 16 inch guns and opened fire.

The AMRAAMS and PHEONIX missiles began taking their toll on the Black and Gray Squadrons, as one third of the planes were shot down by the missiles. The remaining planes in the Blue and Red Squadrons were also shot down, though the Gray Squadron was getting some kills on the incoming enemies.

The two squadrons were finally joined by the Silver Squadron and the Gold Squadron and the two squadrons launched themselves toward the Feazanthian fleet. The final available squadron, the Green Squadron launched to provide cover for the Sarzonian ships as they targeted enemy positions.

OOC-Actually, that's the amount of missiles my fleet can launch in one go. Missile saturation is my chief strategy, mate. That's why most of my fleet are destroyers.

[OOC: All right then... here's a different take on the events]

Despite the best efforts of the remaining attacking air squadrons and the escort squadrons and the gunfire, anti-ship missiles slammed into the Keokuk and Kearsarge, sinking both. The Essex, Parliament, Justice, Copenhagen, and Antibes also sunk due to massive pounding from anti-ship missiles.

The Poseidon also took heavy damage, remaining afloat, but unsalvagable.

The ship's second officer was the only senior officer on the bridge to survive the assault, so he gave the order to abandon ship. Before he himself left the ship, he ordered the lieutenant in charge of the engine room to set a remote control explosive device to detonate when the second officer pushed the remote control button. When the two of them reached a safe distance in their escape vessel, the second officer pushed the button and the Poseidon exploded in a spectacular display.

Aboard the Soverign, Commodore Joe Lamson received the news he had been dreading most.

"Sir, the Ranger has just gone down with all hands."

"All hands?" Lamson answered weakly, his voice cracking with emotion after realizing that he was losing his dear friend Admiral Nelson.

"Yes sir," Ensign Mike Locklear replied. "They didn't have time to initiate escape.

Before Lamson could react, a volley of anti-ship missiles slammed into the Soverign, causing severe damage to the landing strip and disabling the ship's engines.

"Report!"

"We've got about 10 minutes before the reactor's gonna blow!" Chief Petty Officer Bryson Cunnell, subbing for a dead Locklear.

"All hands, abandon ship," Lamson said. As the crew prepared to abandon the Soverign, Lamson decided to take the auxiliary flagship's flag with him to the Endeavor.

Meanwhile, aboard the Jules Verne, Lt. (jg.) Markus Alcorn delivered the bad news.

"We've just lost nine ships due to missile attacks."

"Damn Feazanthians! Target torpedoes."

"Torpedoes targeted sir."

"Fire!" Lamson said, with growing hate building in his gravelly voice. The other submarines followed suit, launching another round of torpedoes and missiles against the Feazanthian fleet.

"Incoming torpedoes!"
"All ships, evasive manuevers! Launch countermeasures, full spread!"

"Mr. Thompson, we have countermeasures all over the place! I can't figure out what's going on!"
"Well we'll just have to join the fun. Launch countermeasures, emergency blow!"

Another pair of noisemakers hit the water, but it was too late. The blowing of the ballasts had attracted the attention of the disoriented torpedoes. They slammed into the Orr, and seven other Feazanthian ships.

"Damage reports coming in from all over the fleet, Admiral. They got some of our destroyers, a pair of our subs..."

He was cut short by several explosions off the port bow.
"Sweet mother of Siddhartha! The...Siddartha's going down! Lucifer's hit, her plants' SCRAMMED. They wont be able to get them online anytime soon."

"Goddamnit! Order all battleships to give out broadsides. How long until we can get another volley out?"
"Two minutes, twenty-eight seconds, sir. All tubes are reloading. Sir! We have a firing solution!"
"FIRE!"

The six battleships remaining in the Feazanthian fleet fired their massive 16" and 24" guns.

The remaining four Alfa-II attack subs and the final Seahorse sub came up behind the Sarzonian fleet, firing torpedoes into their flank.
Sarzonia
18-04-2004, 23:15
The broadsides slammed into the Alamo and the Truxtun, battering both ships until they sunk to the depths. The torpedoes nailed the Terrier, Diamondback, and Owl, sinking those ships. The Blue Jacket "took two for the team" by getting in the way of two more torpedoes by the Feazanthian subs, sacrificing itself to preserve the Endeavor and the Fleetwood.

The Skipjack's commanding officer ordered the sub to retreat.

"Sir, our fleet needs us!" Ensign Jon Marchment shouted above the din on the ship's bridge.

"I know what I'm doing ensign," Lieutenant Joe Currey said. He sneaked the sub into the distance, leaving behind torpedoes in the direction of the enemy subs.

Once the sub reached a distance, and just as the Feazanthian subs detected the wayward boat, Currey pulled the surprise out of his hat.

"Launch a spread of cruise missiles at the following coordinates."

"Sir, the Feazanthian fleet?"

"You heard me Marchment. Arm and fire those missiles."

With a rueful shake of his head, Marchment followed the orders. The Skipjack shook from the force of the missiles launching.

Meanwhile, the Asimov launched torpedoes against the Feazanthian submaries.

Aboard the Rampage, Commodore Marcus Patinkin ordered the Enterprise to launch a spread of missiles, while the Fleetwood and the Alamo fired broadsides from its 16 inch guns at the largest available targets from the Feazanthian fleet.

The nine attack planes that survived the air battle with the Feazanthians readied their most drastic measure yet. In a nod to a desperation ploy from World War II, they set a direct course to collide with Feazanthian ships in a suicide attack. [OOC: If they're not shot down, they'll swerve off and land at the "killed" airstrip since this is a simulation.]
Feazanthia
19-04-2004, 03:16
((OOC-Hey, you do know that ALL 'dead' planes, even ones that are 'shot down', are to simply go to those airfields, right? We're not actually losing any hardware.))

"ADMIRAL, WE HAVE INCOMING!"
"ACTIVATE CIWS!" The admiral cursed his luck. How could those damn Alfas have allowed that sub to escape?

The gattling cannons on the deck of the Dhukka screamed as the anti-ship missiles and F-16s approached.

The Viriya and the Vassa launched their ASTER-30 AA missiles at the enemy planes, destroying them. The Sugati and the Bodhi focused on the missiles, destroying all but three ((I think...how many missiles were in that volley?))

The FN Xylion followed the Blue Janet's example, cranking its incredibly powerful but very noisy power plant to full power and swerving in front of its comrades as they killed their own screws. The torpedoes locked on the doomed Alfa-II and utterly obliterated it, but it had saved the rest of the submarine force.

The Columbo was hit by multiple missiles and broadsides, sinking the mighty Thunderchild battleship.

"Admiral, all vessels report ready to fire."
"About damn time. FIRE!"

1,900 cruise missiles streaked towards the Sarzonian fleet at Mach 0.98, picking out targets.

Ferret, Churchill, Mink, Zeta, Yuri, Katana, and Shruiken squadrons launched with AGM-84 Harpoon missiles strapped to their wings. The too headed towards the Sarzonian fleet, escorted by Alpha, Mojo, Omega, Rapier, Sabre, and Iceman squadrons.

[OOC: I know... that's why I specified there'd be a different "kill method" than the planes actually hitting your ships. There'd be some kind of laser "tag" that marks the plane hitting the ship. As for the missiles, The sub fired as many cruise missiles as that class can fire... it's one of Isselmere's SSBNs so if you're familiar with that class, that's the number to use.]

The Green Squadron, the Minnesota, and the Terrier class frigates started firing at the incoming missiles, but several of them slammed into the Alamo and the Endeavor. The Alamo took the brunt of the missiles, and the ship slowly sank to the depths. The Endeavor lost most of its engine power and its communications array was shot to hell. Turret one was also battered out of commission. The Fleetwood aimed its turrets and launched broadsides against the Feazanthian fleet.

The remaining jets on the deck of the Federal launched themselves on an intercept course with the incoming fighters, while the Minnesota turned its anti-aircraft fire upon them as well. The Convey got a read on enemy subs below and launched depth charges against the enemy subs.

The Skipjack decided it would go out fighting, and it launched its array of shorter-range missiles against the Alfa II subs.

Aboard the Endeavor, more tragedy hit when the second in command of the fleet succumbed to war wounds, leaving Commodore Patinkin in command.

"We've got too many casualites to do anything about," Patinkin said, his voice weary and tinged with grief. "Let's give them something to remember us by."

Every remaining ship that had a missile in it launched its volley of anti-air and anti-ship missiles at the Feazanthian aircraft and ships respectively.

Alpha and Omega squadron intercepted the jets ((F-16s?)) with their greater technology and numbers. However, Mojo squadron was taken down by assorted AA fire.

Ferret and Churchill squadrons were first to the Sarzonian fleet, launching their AGM-84 Harpoon missiles at the deck and conning tower of the Federal. Rapier and Sabre squadrons intercepted the missiles (75 planes there), allowing only a few to make it through and hit the Asoka's thick belt armor.

The Feazanthian fleet launched one last volley of missiles, this time managing to eke out 2,148 of the deadly Tomahawks. With the missile supply depleted, every ship with at least one deck gun began barreling towards the Sarzonians at full speed. The five battleships unleashed hellish broadsides at the largest Sarzonian ships, showing the superiority of Doujin battleship engineering.

The Firth was sunk, but the remaining attack subs submerged and fired into the bottom of the rear ships.

The missiles and guns had their effect, sending the Federal to the depths. All the gun-turreted battleships except the Fleetwood also sank quickly. The supply ships and the amphibious assault vessels also went down in flames. The frigates and destroyers sailed toward the Feazanthian fleet in a desperate attempt to intercept them, while the Sarzonian subs beneath the Feazanthian fleet decided to launch a round of torpedoes.

Aboard the Fleetwood, the lone remaining senior officer, Lt. (jg.) Connor Blaine ordered the ship to turn its turrets at the battleships.

"If we're going down, we're going to go down swinging."

Then, a voice came over the intercom.

"All hands, this is Commodore Patinkin. By mutual consent of all senior officers, this exercise is over."

[OOC: I think it's time to concede now. That's why I'm ordering my ships to stand down.]

Patinkin ordered his communications officer to signal the commanding officer of the Feazanthian navy to call a halt to the full-scale exercise.

"We've taken some 'losses' in this exercise and a lot of lessons," Patinkin said. "Considering our navy's general lack of experience, I think we did decently. We have some things we can improve upon, like finding a way to get some Doujin battleships."

[OOC: I think losing most of my capital ships and fighter planes is enough damage for one exercise, don't you think?]

The subs surfaced, and the planes doubled back to their carriers. Admiral Wallace breathed a sigh of relief and opened a channel to Patinkin.

"This is Admiral Wallace of the Feazanthian Navy. On behalf of us all, thank you for your cooperation. You have taught us a thing or two as well. We wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors. Farewell."
He closed the channel.
"Lieutennant, any word from the rodina?"
"We're getting scattered reports, seems like the storm's playing hell with their communications as much as it is ours. From what I've gathered, there's some trouble with the air force. Sounds like a squadron went down on patrol."
"What? That's no good. Let's head back, they might need us."

Admiral Nelson ordered the aircraft to return to their ships. The "sunk" ships that didn't return to Sarzonia also sailed into formation.

"We have a few things to work on, which the folks in Woodstock have already started addressing," Nelson said. "Number one, lack of experience. We've already started to remedy that situation with this exercise. Number two, we need to be able to one, shoot down more anti-ship missiles and withstand the ones that get through; number two, improve our air support; and number three, build battleships that are able to stand up to a Doujin class battleship.

"The things we can take positively from this experience is that the limited subs we had served us well. The battleships proved what a good old fashioned broadside could still bring to the table, and for all the damage we took, we were able to deal them some pretty heavy blows."

The Sarzonian fleet, except for the squadron set to begin the smaller scale exercise with the Feazanthians, prepared to return to port with simulated war wounds and a valuable gift of experience.

[OOC: Thanks for doing the exercise with my navy. It'll help me in future role-playing and in setting my navy up to be able to fight a modern war.]
