Governor of Crete on trial

Rotovia
12-04-2004, 08:24
A little background...

For hundreds of years hostilities have excsited between mainland Rotovia and the Island of Crete, however a few decades ago the Island surrendered and a Governor was appointed. Over time the Island was allowed to govern itself and elect it's own Govenor's, twelves years after this the Islands then Governor introduced a communist style of government. Mainland Rotovia responded by removing self government from the Island and appointed a Governor by auhtority of the Senate. Recently the Island declared independance by sinking a Battlecruiser. The response was quick and after a breif conflict the Senate imposed complete occupation on the Island and arrested the Governor.

Reporter: "Citizens of Rotovia behind me is the Central Government Building where the former Governor of Crete Harold Farthing is being tried on five counts of Treason and three counts of High Treason. This is the first time the sentance of death has been considered since the trial of Finlandon's former Dictator. In accordance with the National Security Act the Governor will be tried by a panel of two Supreme Court Judges, two High Court Judges, two Federal Seantors and the President...oh, we're crossing over live to inside the Courtroom"

===============================================

Balliff: "All rise for the Honourable Judge Andrew Heywood, the Honourable Judge Stephene Matthews, the Right Honourable Justice Josphene Philips, the Honourable Senator Marcus Folio, the Honourable Senator Charles Wheeler, Her Eminency the Right Honourable Justice Katherine Oxford and His Eminency the Honourable Seantor, President Dionysus Baccheus"

President: "You may be seated. Harold Farthing, you have been charged with five counts of Treason in the First Degree, on count of High Treason in the Second Degree and two counts of High Treason in the First Degree..."

Prosecutor: "If I may Your Honour, the Idictment has been amended to include all offences in the First Degree"

President: "Any objections from the Panel?...very well. So ordered. Harold Farthing, you stand charged of five countsof Treason in the First Degree and three counts of High Treason in the First Degree. How do you plead?"

Defence Attorney: "My client will not enter a plea at this time"

President: "Councillor, you forget your place. This is not the Magistrate's Court. nor the Supreme Court, nor the High Court. This is the Council od States and as such your client will enter a plea or you will both find yourselves in contempt of this Court!"

Defence: "Not guilty, Your Honour"

President: "Very well, we are adjourned until ten am tommorow morning when we shall hear opening arguements."

Balliff: "All rise..."

Reporter: "We there you have it, tune in tommorow for our continued coverage of Rotovia's most controversial case"

From this i assume that you have removed a legitimate, democratically elected, official? We are deeply concerned, not just because of the profound intolerance of his political beliefs, but those of the entire population of Crete.

We wholeheartedly reject this imperialist behaviour and insist that the people of Crete are able to forge their own national destiny.

To insist that these people are "subordinate" and denying them the right to secede or form their own democratic government is a blatant demonstration that Rotovia is little more than a badly disguised dictatorship.

If this is the case, why are the Cretan people forbidden from electing their desired representative? Democracy, as long as it does not conflict with the status quo, it would seem.

"They are free to elect officals to all other levels of government. However, it has been proven in the past that the postion of Governor has been abused and it was (and remains) the postion the position of the Senate that unity is the only way to peace. That said, we will do anything within our power to keep that unity."

So, it's the old story of "Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others", specifically those whos equality/freedom of speech may damage the status quo or what is deemed as the right way by those at the top positions of government. Correct?

But, the people of Crete obviously do not want the protection of Rotovia. They want independence. How can "treason" be an issue? Why wouldn't they turn their backs on a government that isn't acting in their interests? Especially a so called "democratic" government. Isn't that their right in a democracy?

Do citizens of other states of Rotovia elect their governors?

And what would the penalty for this governor be if he is found guilty?

We also suggest a referendum in Crete over the question of their independence.

"The other States of Rotovia do not have Governor, with the acception of Letican Island which is Rotovia's Colony in the nation of Prespolis. Rotovia's four State's Attapolis, Spartapolis, Deopolis and Theopolis elect Consuls who are sometimes refered to as Governor's or Premiers as the States so choose.

The Governor would no doubt receive a prision sentance, though in the older days of Rotovia banishment was common we no longer use that punishment, the death penalty is techniquely possible though unlikely as it is strongly disliked by the President.

The Island does not have the right to sever itself from our protection and as such we will not hold a referendum to commit treason"

So, is the governor a democratically elected official, or does the Rotovian central government appoint them eg. like a confederacy?

Banishment would be an acceptable solution, if your government is willing to consider it, we would be more than happy to grant the governor asylum in Kanabia.

The Island does not have the right to sever itself from our protection and as such we will not hold a referendum to commit treason"

I am assuming because this island was taken by force, they are technically an occupied territory and this is why they do not have the right to secede?

"The Governor is democratically elected in all Allied States of Rotovia. Please donot jump the gun, we believe in the assumption of innocence and only after he has been found guilty will a sentance be considered. You are correct, because Crete is a subordinate state it is not granted all the rights as the rest of Rotovia."
