After deciding that the OICW weapon currently in use was too bulky, was not on par with other nation's weapons, and just wasn't all that cool looking, the Future Assault Rifle Development Commitee (FARDC) was formed in order to develop the assault rifle of the future.
Of the many designs drawn up, the FAR-11 (Future Assault Rifle-Design 11) was selected.
FAR-11

Background
The FAR represents the first infantry weapon to be developed by the Empire, and it also presents many modern technologies (OOC: which are, in fact, real life tech already in existance) such as caseless ammo. The FAR is designed to replace OICW and M16A3 rifles as the new standard.
Specifications
Round Size 4.7mm, with higher shot velocities and thus more penetration.
Rounds per magazine 50, three spots for magazines allow 150 rounds without reloading
Weight 10 pounds (4.5 kg) fully loaded
Maximum Effective Range 700 meters (2,300 feet)
Maximum Range 800 meters (2,600 feet)
Rounds per minute 600
FARFCS-01
The Future Assault Rifle Fire Control System provides the site a simple dot showing where a shot will hit, factoring in wind, movement, and various other measurements. This is done via the latest tech in small computers. Batteries for this system can last 5 hours, and are rechargeable via special cables on any land vehicle.
Test Results
The unorthodox shape of the rifle has been shown (OOC: it is the HK G-11 shape, and this was shown for it, too) to be more easily learned than current shapes. Also, the strange loading and reloading of ammo has similarly been more easily learned. Bullets, though smaller, reported higher penetration due to higher shot velocities. Finally, 50% greater accuracy has been reported.
Cost $6,000, cheaper than the OICW. Ammo cost is 1.5x (50%) higher than case ammo per round, but is expected to drop as more factories convert from case ammo to caseless ammo, finding new ways to produce the ammo cheaper/
