Geography
Shang-Ti is an island nation located in Eastern Asia, Southeast of the RL Korean Peninsula. Its area is slightly larger than RL California. The shores on the northern coasts and western islands tend to be harsh volcanic rock, whereas the shores on the western Dalian Bay and southern tip tend to be exotic sandy beaches. The northern end of Shang-Ti tend to be mountainous with deep valleys; the central area hilly with fertile farmland; and the southern peninsula is a lush forest covering hundreds of square miles.
People
Nationally, the people are called Shang-Tians. The general population is (as of this writing) 200 Million with the following breakdown:
0-14 years: 20.9%
15-64 years: 66.7%
65 years and over: 12.4%
Ethnically, Shang-Ti is 93% Asian, 4% White, 2% Middle-Eastern, and 1% other. Ethnic minorities tend to be recent immigrants or first-generation, since Shang-Ti’s borders have just recently been opened to outsiders/non-Asians. The majority of ethnic minorities hold higher-end professional jobs such as Technology, Academia, Business Executives. There are no discriminatory laws in Shang-Ti, all members of society are treated equally and by merit.
Educationally, Shang-Tians take great pride in their education system. All citizens are bi-lingual; the state sponsored languages are Mandarin and American English. Children start cultural education at age 4 through 6; which includes language, art appreciation, and social skills. Elementary school is age 6 through 12, Middle School is age 12 through 15, and Prep School is age 15 through 18. All 18-year-olds are required to take aptitude tests prior to graduation; based on the results of these tests all students attend free of charge 4 years of vocational and higher education. If a student wishes to attend a school no advised by the aptitude test, then the student must pay for college.
Religiously, Shang-Ti is very open, although the populace does gravitate towards the more traditional Eastern religions. The breakdown is: 45% Taoist, 20% Buddhist, 15% Agnostic, 10% Christian, 5% Islamic, and 5% other. There are no national churches or state sponsored religion in Shang-Ti.
Culture
The citizens of Shang-Ti have been somewhat closed off with regards to culture. Due to the isolationism of the past, Shang-Ti artists and entertainment has focused on its own culture. Asian design similar to RL China and Japan are prevalent in architecture, sculpture, and visual art.
Musically, a wide range of genres has emerged from environment manipulation, “classical” string & woodwind instrumentation, full orchestral pieces, “popular” electronica, as a new trend called “Sin Opera” which is classically trained opera singers accompanied by heavily distorted electronica and percussion.
In the literary world, the poet is still preferred over the novelist. Quiet simplicity is preferred over rambling reams of paper. Some of the more famous poetic pieces to be awarded Shang-Ti literary prices have comprised only a few words or a few lines.
Government
The Capital of Shang-Ti is Shih’Aori, which is located centrally on the Main Island of Shang-Ti. State Capitals are named respectively for their states, such as Kao-Tung City is the capital of the State of Kao-Tung. Ting-Fao Island is a military complex, and thus does not have government representation.
The main system of government is a Constitutional-based Democratic Republic. The federal laws are dictated by a Constitution that was ratified by all 10 States. A heavy emphasis on freedoms – personal, political, economic, and civic – is set in place by the Constitution. Each state has its own constitution which deals with the validity of laws that are not covered by the National Constitution or National Laws. To enforce the National Constitution, a National Court makes completely binding decisions. National Court Justices serve life terms; the President picks replacements.
The President is elected every 10 years through a populace election. Each state has a governor who is elected every 10 years through a populace election within each respective state. Each state also has 5 National Representatives which are elected every 5 years to serve on the National Congress. The National Congress is the legislative branch of the government.
Suffrage is universal, starting at 18 years of age. The major political parties include the Democratic Federal Party, Libertarian Party, People’s Political Party, and the (ironically named) Anarchist Union.
Military
The military of Shang-Ti is made up of four main branches: Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marines. A National Reserve Force is also in place. As Shang-Ti is an island nation, the Navy has significantly more numbers and a higher budgeting allocation. The Air Force has primarily been used for interdiction, air superiority, and naval warfare. The Army’s main role is with Homeland Defense, although approximately 30% of Army troops are trained for offensive warfare. The Marines play a larger role in Shang-Ti’s land warfare on foreign shores, and have the best training of any of Shang-Ti’s ground units.
As of this writing, the Democratic Republic of Shang-Ti’s military is comprised of 1% of the general population, and receives 10% of the National Budget. The National Reserve Force is comprised of only 0.25% of the general population. Military service is voluntary, and the minimum age to join is 18.
