Atlantic Naval Base RP

The Veritasean Atlantic Naval Base (described below) is the base of operations for the entire Veritasean Atlantic Fleet (soon to be increased in number). It is a large superstructure in the mid-Atlantic Ocean (not within any territorial waters) that provides docking and repair facilities for the various naval ships within the Veritasean Imperial Navy. I want to turn this thread into an RP for the base where other nations can RP espionage attempts (ELINT gathering), merchant shipping emergencies in the area, airliner emergency landings, or anything that might involve the base (be creative). So, you can either start the RP now, or read through Pages 1 and 2 for more detailed info regarding the base. Let the RP begin!

The Veritasean Senate has approved the creation of a naval base in the mid-Atlantic. Unum Veritas is situated in the South Pacific, and thus, its ability to interact with those countries in the Atlantic are limited. The creation of this base will dramatically change this, as will its revolutionary design. The base will not be built on an island or on any currently existing territory. Instead, the Veritasean Atlantic Command Base will utilize MOBO (Mobile Offshore Base of Operations) technology. MOBO's are constructed of individual modules that are linked together and can be specialized to create anything from barracks to ship repair docks to SAM batteries. This base will have only defensive weapons built in (such as SAM's or torpedos), but no ICBM's or cruise missiles. The base will be home to two destroyer squadrons, three submarine squadrons, and three carrier battle groups. Docking and repair facilities will be built into the base as well as several runways for planes too large to land on carriers. One division of Marines will be housed at the base and the base will have its own crew to man its ASW, AUW, and AA suites. The facility will also be available for some commercial travel and tours will be offered to representatives of foreign governments.

The Atlantic Command Base, once completed, will have four runways, a fully operational radar and sonar net, barracks for a platoon, training facilities for various aspects of warfare including specops and urban fighting, and will have docking and repair facilities for the various classes of ships to be stationed on it. Construction will take about 4 NS years (4 RL weeks). Comments or questions regarding this base are welcome.

The development and progress of this proposed naval base will be watched closely by Eredron; pending it's success, inquiries into the technology, material, effectiveness and cost may be made from the Eredron Ministry of War.

OOC: Sorry I'm just being picky but isn't a barracks to fit just a platoon a little on the small side (with a platoon being roughly 30 men IIRC), for a facility that large?

Barracks are of varying sizes.

Unum Veritas, Doujin will be willing to help fund this if in turn we can have a Battlefleet there?

The size of the barracks isn't really important, I can always up the number of marines I have there.

Doujin, currently this is just a base for Veritasean assets (although assistance will be rendered to foreign airlines or ships that need it); however, we would be interested in creating a joint, multi-national, seabase in either the northern Pacific or Indian Oceans.

OOC: I'd be interested in something like this, if you'd like.

The fishing vessel pitched violently in the turbulent seas as the helmsman tried to maintain course around the Cape of Good Hope. The five new 'fishermen' hadn't been able to keep any food down for several hours and their weakness only added to their seasickness. (Of course being trapped in a narrow room filled with computers and high-tech surveillance equipment with no sight of the outside for hours at a time didn't help!)

Eventually, the ship passed out of the storm and hugging the coast of Africa began to make its way toward the site of the Unum Veritas seabase. The captain made a brief port call in Gabon's Port Gentil to unload a cargo of fish in the local markets before continuing onward...

You know as part of the OMP you coudl have just asked to use soem of our facilities (either the main fleet base on crookfur itself in the north atlantic our our secondary base at covenent island in equatorial waters.

now this is soemthing for the OMp to think about, where are we all?

Ozymandias IV, you do realize that it hasn't been built yet? Construction is only just now beginning.

Crookfur, good point, but I wanted a strictly Veritasean base. Althought it is a good idea. Perhaps the OMP should build a massive base of similar construction for use by all of the allied nations. Which ocean would we put it in?

OOC - Yes, we're planning on doing a lot of 'fishing' in the area over the next several years...

Very well, I just hope none of the ELINT assets on the base detect anything unusual coming from your fishing vessels. Espionage leads to enormous international incidents that could very well blossom into armed conflict.

In return for funding 10% of the cost for the project, Bonstock would like the right to base a Marine Expeditionary Strike Group (1 LHD, 2 other amphib ships, 3 surface escorts, a submarine, an EP-3, and an MEU) at your facility.

Bonstock, as of now this facility is intended to be solely Veritasean; however, if you are a member of the OMP (Organization of Marine Powers) or are interested in the group, I believe they have plans of creating an extremely large base with a similar purpose. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to have you join.

You know I'm going to have to do satellite recon just for the hell of it :)

On my base? Alright, we're not hiding anything there so go ahead. In fact, I'm going to list the exact ships based there in a little while.

I'm saying that now I got you thinking about reconnaissance and such. This way in essence I have assisted in the defense of your base :) I'm not actually going to do any recon of it but by saying so it did get you to think twice about defenses.

Construction of the base is entering its final phase and personnel are slowly being transferred to it. The base will not be located on any major shipping routes, nor in any territorial waters (in order to avoid complaints from other nations), and so several dredging projects are taking place before any large ships can dock at the facility. Active defense systems are currently about 69% operational and passive defense systems are completely operational. The barracks and training facilities have been completed and the first wave of Marines (the number of Marines to be stationed on the base has been greatly increased, but will not be released) will be arriving within the week. Catamarans and other shallow-draft vessels are currently being used to ferry personnel to and from the base and protect it, as the runways are receiving their final building reinforcements. Several new ideas have been integrated into the base, but they are not being released to the public; however, it is expected that they include a small-scale SDI system, ELINT suites, and an R&D facility. Current projections have the base at fully-operational status in one NS month (about one day RL).

Base construction has been completed and it has been declared fully operational. Essential base personnel have all been transported to the new facility, and the remaining workers will soon be stationed as well. Dredging has been finished, the ships relocated to the base, and the runways are now operational.

The Veritasean Senate has approved a new policy for the Atlantic Command Base. Any merchant shipping, regardless of nationality (with the exception of those nations deemed "hostile" or "dangerous") will be allowed to use the base's repair and docking facilities in the event of an emergency on board the merchant ship. The same will hold true for civilian aircraft requiring an emergency landing.

What is the water depth of the location?

Will there be sufficiant gas supplys for a fleet?
Unum Veritas
28-04-2004, 00:29
The depth has been dredged out to accomodate ships with a draft equal to that of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier and slightly larger. There is enough fuel and munitions supply for the Veritasean fleets based at the facility, and some extra fuel is stored for emergencies.

BUMPing again in the hopes of someone beginning an RP.....oh, what the heck, I'll try to start one myself......

The Command and Control hub of the Atlantic Fleet Command Base was at the center of the large, titanium structure. Ensign Rodgers looked out a thick window and was struck by how odd it was to be sitting only ten or so yards off the waterline, supported only by metal "legs".
This must be what its like to be on an oil rig, he thought to himself, Only oilrigs don't constantly have fighter jets screaming over, squads of Marines jogging around, or an entire fleet of warships tied up alongside...
"Rodgers!" the watch officer yelled, cutting into the ensign's daydream, "I'd better not see that glazed-over look on your eyes again, or I'm gonna submit your name for drug testing! Now get back to work!"
"Aye sir," came the young man's dutiful response as he turned back to his screen that was currently monitoring known spy satellites trajectory. A Veritasean Sat was due to pass over in within the next two hours, where it would calibrate its equipment and where the anti-sat capabilites of the base would be tested. Several satellites of other nationalities had also been redirected to look at the newly-operational base. It could get risky with all those satellites in such close proximity, but that wasn't Rodgers' job, all he had to do was keep up with which sats were overhead when so that the base activities could be changed as needed. Suddenly a communications officer called out,
"We've got a merchant vessel that reports heavy flooding and is requesting aerial and sea-based aid as soon as possible, they don't think they can make it this far so we'll have to go to them..."

It was a struggle for the captain to keep his fishing trawler below the visible horizon, yet still be able to intercept stray electronic signals in his elint role.

It was a long duty on station in the Atlantic, with the added necessity of actually hauling in and processing fish every few weeks to maintain their cover story.

With the base finally operational, the captain was looking forward to receiving a call on the satellite radio that they could come home. At the same time, the Republic's Submarine Command would probably keep a boat or two in the vacinity for quite some time to come...
