Read the stickies, they explain the whole issue of how many troops you can have. Ask around for a GDP calculator to find out your military budget. Avoid godmoding like the plague. If you see a godmoder, blow them to h*** with the standard issue Ionized Graviton Needle of Regenerating Energy Cannon, aka IGNORE Cannon. Lastly, turn off the caps lock. Proper grammar is the difference between a mediocre post and an extraordinary one, the difference between appalling and decent. Did I miss anything?

ok your army at present (without buying anything) stands at about 100,000 poorly trained Militia men, i recommend around 200 tanks (poor old soviet versions i.e T-55/T-64 pattern
around 2500 AT men, 5000 riflemen, 20 Machine Guns & 5 Howitzers/Artillery guns

the rest you could split into a navy....

First off, here are some basic things:

All wars, negotiations, etc. are role-played. They have no real bearing on what your nation says, but, in the RP (role-play) world, war losses etc. effect your nation.

Now, let's move onto what role-playing is or is not. It is not:

"I launch 9999999999999999999999 nooks at you! U r dead lolololol!!!!!11111111111111111"

"My 999999 million man army invades u!!!!!!!!!1111111111111"

"My super-invincable forcefields bounce them back!!!!11111111"

Attacks such as these are called god-modding and the result is usualy the international community ignoring you (via posting things like "IGNORE cannon fired!") and all things you do, help in correcting it, or the less observent (or uncaring) do not recognize that you are god-modding. It is not recommended that you dont god-mod.

For good roleplaying, look around at various threads

Important Abreviations:

RP=Role-play
OOC: Out of charactor
IC: In charactor
GDP: Gross domestic product (also GNP, Gross national product)
GNP/GDP per capita: Basicly, average money per person. Your economic rating determines your GDP per capita, and GDP per capita times your population = GDP

Nuclear Weapons:

It is generaly accepted that you cannot have a nuclear/atomic bomb before you have 100,000,000 people. Also, no more that 5% of your people (and that is at TOTAL war) can be in the army. Realisticly, under 1% is best.

I was under the impression that we couldn't "fight" on nationstates...
can we role play "fighting"?

ok i'll make one for you and BA to play in, i'll get involed aswell, is it ok if we use ww2 technology? it'd make it a nice and simple RP as there will be the basic essence of fighting without nuclear missles and the like....

It is generaly accepted that you cannot have a nuclear/atomic bomb before you have 100,000,000 people.

That seems overly harsh, and nothing more than an OOC tool by which older nations attempt to keep new nations under control.

The UK and France have nuclear weapons with populations around 60,000,000. Israel supposedly has nukes, with a population of only 6,500,000.

Iran and North Korea are suspected of having nuclear weapons, and they have populations of 60 million and 20-30 million (though with North Korea, it's hard to tell) respectively

The reason most countries in RL don't have nuclear weapons is not because they can't afford them, but because either they don't want them, or the US won't let them.

The constant "You're not old enough to build stuff" diatribe, is, in most instances, complete crap. Any nation should be allowed nuclear weapon capability, if they are competent roleplayers.

I recommend that, to learn how to RP, you look at the stickies (the threads at the top that dont move down) and you read some posts from people.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/index.html lists many real life nations with the military weapons from each. I use it (and Google) to search for information on various world systems. if that place doesnt have what you need, go to google and type in name-of-weapon-to-know-of specifications

i dont want to get into selling nuclear weapons,to much controversy.
i think the 100,000,000 rule is way to small,a nation gets that population kinda quick, most terrorists (in NS) have more than that i think,we dont want them running around with nuclear weapons...

The idea of a terrorist organisation having 100,000,000 members is pretty ridiculous anyway.

Once you have found out your national budget from the calculator, you'll probably use less then 5% on military. Remember, a big chunk of that has to be spent on paying your troops, buildings, etc. What you buy first depends on how you imagine your history. For me, I figured I had a bunch of guys with hunting rifles who kicked out a foriegn occupier. So I decided to first get hand guns and machine guns. You may want to go with the AK-47. It's a good rifle, and they are cheap. I also had to get vehicles for them. Later came tanks, and so on.

Where to go is easy. There are a lot of Nations that have storefronts. Just by looking on the first page on this forum I saw the link to the Northrop-Grumman Military Storefront (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=113695) and the link to the CSJMI (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75689) storefront. Look at the different threads, and if you see some stuff you like, just make a post to that thread. Remember, all the fun of this game is role play, so instead of just saying, dude- gimmee 50 of that, have some fun with it. Try to make your post more like, "Sir, the Royal Marines are in need of x amount of x. We hope to procure these from your nation." (just an exemple) They will confirm your order, and you can make a post which you state you have wired the money. Note that there is nothing on the website that actually moves the money from one nation to another, you just roleplay the transaction.

I know several nations offer training. Probably the best way to find one is to make a thread on this forum which states you are looking for military training. Your are sure to get a few bids from nations.

how do i work out what i have already in my militry without buying anything
ARMY - AIRFORCE - NAVY - TANKS - ETC
It's up to you to decide what you have so far. Just remember, if you want to say you already have all branches of the military, you are a small nation. Your navy would probably only consist of a few coastal patrol boats. Your Airforce would only have a few planes. Your army would not have many expensive armor units.

-=Edit=-
One more thing that should be mentioned is the concept of time. There is no real translation of real life time to game time. It tends to be rather fluid. A weeks worth of action may happen in a thread in one RL day. Personally, for my budget, I figure 1 NS year to 1 RL week. Other people use different systems of time, so just be aware of that.
