Thunderstraat
27-03-2004, 22:50
Space shivered as the smallish ITN force of five carriers, ten battleships, twenty cruisers and fifty dropships appeared in Earth orbit...
"Let's do it."
"Concurred."
Admiral Joshua Meinecke nodded to his alien companion. "Finally..."
"Remind me again why you are invading this primitive Earth nation."
"Ninety percent of the Star Empire's population can trace their roots back here."
"Yes, but it was over a thousand years ago. It is no longer your homeland."
Meinecke smiled. "One thousand, one hundred, and forty-three years ago that we left Africa. Better that than one thousand, one hundred, and forty-four years away, is it not?"
"Yes, but you no longer have anything in common. Earth has not changed, while the Nuboer settlers of Thunderstraat have changed radically. South Africa is mainly Protestant. Thunderstraat is mainly Mormon. South Africa speaks Afrikaans and a variety of tribal languages. Thunderstraat speaks English - the very language of your ancient conquerers. South Africa is only barely recovering from apartheid. Thunderstraat has had a policy of almost complete nondiscrimination for centuries."
"That doesn't matter, my friend. What matters is, we're back."
Slowly, the dropships began their fall to the planned base in the Transvaal, with fighters swarming from the carriers to escort them. Heavy beam weapons on the battleships slowly crackled to life...
Meinecke smiled again. He turned to his screen and put on his best poker face.
"Citizens of South Africa. This is Joshua Meinecke of the Return Fleet. All of your nation east of the city of Kimberly is under the administration of the Star Empire of Thunderstraat. Lesotho and Swaziland remain sovereign nations. Please accept your conquerers with open arms and open hearts. We are, after all, returning home. Do not attempt to resist, for resistance is futile."
He flicked it off, and the smile returned. "That's about it."
"Will it work?"
A shake of the head, a little sigh. "It never does..."
...and all through the dropships, even from those of a different ancestry, soldiers rejoiced. For now, after a thousand years, they were coming home.
