Logan Newport, the Austarian foriegn minister was tired after a long day at the office. As she drove home, it began to rain, and she turned on the wipers. Pulling up to a set of traffic lights, she yawned, and looked out the window. Outside, she could barely make out the neon lights of a 24 hour supermarket, reminding her that she needed to buy some quick groceries for dinner. The light turned green, and she was slow to react. Pulling away from the lights, she changed lanes, into the lane which would allow her to pull into the supermarket carpark. This was her regular supermarket. It was small, so she wouldnt be constantly harrassed by a barrage of questions from random citizens and members of the media, and she knew everyone there. Logan slowed her car as she pulled into the carpark, and turned into the space right in front of the door.

Turning off the ignition, she gathered her purse and keys, and waited. Quickly, she opened the door, slammed it shut, and raced inside, trying to prevent herself from getting wet from the rain, which was now pouring down. When she got inside, she waited, her eyes adjusting to the dim light.
"Hey Logan, how are we today?", asked a voice from ahead.
Logan peered into the store, "Oh hi Mary. Yeah, I'm so tired. I think I might just grab a snack tonight..."
"I take it you've had a long day," exclaimed Mary winking, "I'll leave you to it then."
"Thanks." replied Logan, who was already entering the store.

She began to walk down one of the isles, down to the back of the store, passing a tall man on her way down. She paid little attention to the man, arriving at the milk section. She looked at the milk supplies, and noticed that the shop had recently been stocked. Without warning, the man appeared beside her, who was also apparently looking at the milk, startling her.
The man turned to Logan as she was making her choice, "Excuse me, but would you have a spare dollar?"
"Sorry?" spluttered Logan with an uncertainty in her voice, "I didnt quite..."
"Do you have a spare dollar?!" interrupted the man, slightly annoyed.
"Uh, yeah...", she replied, reaching into her jacket pocket.
The man waited as she fumbled in her pocket, "Stupid bit..."
Logan paused, and looked at him. What did he want?
"Come on! Hurry up! I dont have all f*cking day!", said the man rudely, shocking Logan as she began to continue her search. She looked down, into her pocket which she was searching in. Finding the dollar, she pulled it out, and looked up to see the shock of her life. The man was standing, pointing the butt of a handgun right at her head, "Where do you think your taking this f*cking country b*tch?"

Before she could answer, the man pulled the trigger, throwing Logan back onto the stand of milk. The man turned and began to run. As Logan fell, she knocked over a large shelf of bottles, sending them crashing onto the ground. The bottles shattered, and hurried footsteps could be heard coming towards her as she faded in and out of conciousness. Just as she blacked out, Mary appeared over her, and began to scream to other workers to call 911.

As they enter, it becomes appear the caos that the hospital deals with all day. Babies are crying, and people are waiting for important sessions. Ms Newport has priority though, as her wounds are severe and life-threatening. As doctors take control, a child runs in front of the stretcher, forcing the crew to take a sharp turn. The child runs away, and the doctors continue towards the surgical ward.

Two Hours Later: 07:55PM AST - AUSTARIAN STANDARD TIME

A surgen walks out of the room, with blood covering his shirt. Removing his mask, he wipes his brow, and looks over to Ms Logan's husband. He sighs, and begins to approach her husband. Looking up, her husband stands up, and rushes over to the surgen, "Is everything OK? How is she? When can I see her? Can I see her now?"
"Sir, bleeding was extensive. Uh, it was much more than what would be ideal. We tried our hardest Mr. Logan. I'm sorry..."
"No....NO!" screamed the husband, hitting the vending machine nearby, "Shut up! NO! NO!"
He began to headbutt the machine, before finally collapsing into a heap crying, "No...."
The surgon felt bad, but it was a part of his job. He turned away, and left the crying husband on the floor. As he walked away, it pained him to hear the screams coming from behind him, but as much as he wanted to, it wasnt his job...

Colonel Malac stood at the police barrier, pulling the collar of his sports jacket up to help shield his face from the rain. He was watching the police investigation taking place in the shop. He couldn't make out much, and it enraged him.

All the information sources they had in the country, all the bribed officals, all the spy devices, all the communication taps and all the agents placed throughout the country, and Colonel Malac, didn't know a dam thing.

He fingered his blaster in his pocket and mumbled the startings of a plan to himself, working out the finer points, all the time thinking who could have carried out the operation, who wanted to kill Logan Newport?

It couldn't have been a just a random militant, surely the Austar Union Security forces kept a closer watch on their cabinet ministers....
