Ok this is the thread for the naval exercises we have agreed to.
They will be held at Norfolk Island. I will take the role of defender first.
Note that the only harbor is at Kingston and that is the place you have to conquer.

My forces consist of:
1st fleet
Battleship: 1, the WNB Griffen
1 Wasp-class CVL, the WNC Scoron
4 EA-24H Naval Helicopter
2 EA-28G Light Attack/Special Forces Helicopter.
1st naval air squadron
F-8 Stingray: 10
2nd naval air squadron
F-8 Stingray: 10
3 EM-120 Barracuda Corvette, the WNC Mowtaw, Griphin and Manticore
with 1 EA-24H Naval Helicopter
10 Piranha-class, the Underhand, Darkdagger, Seaserpent, Unseen threat, Nightknife, Darkdread, Seaskimmer, Grimrise, Bonerattler and Ragnarok.
1 MSS-1C, the Saratogi
1 MSS-1D, the Asclepius

On board the Saratogi near Kingston

"Is the Scoron in position?", asked Admiral Yablinko.
"Yes sir, she has take position on the north side of the island. She is being guarded by the Griphin and the submarines Bonerattler and Ragnarok as you ordered. The Griffen the other 2 corvettes and the submarines Underhand, Darkdagger, Seaserpent and Unseen threat are guarding the harbor. The Nightknife, Darkdread, Seaskimmer and Grimrise are patrolling the area."
"Good. Now we can only wait for the opponent to make their first move."
Yablinko felt uneasy on this boat. He would have preferred the Griffen or even better one of the subs but this tub had the best command facilities in the fleet and you couldn't command a fleet from a Piranha.

The Carrier Task Force enters exercise area 4km south west of Phillip Island.

Vice-Admiral Flavian orders Fleet to battle stations

"Sir the captain of the Grimrise has spotted the fleet. 2 clicks south of their current position."

That was exactly where he had hoped they would come from.
"What is their composition?"
"Yasa reports that the fleet consists out of 3 frigates, 3 destroyers, 2 cruisers and one carrier. He also says that sonar is picking up a submarine. Characteristics match that of the Collin class."
"Tell him to dive and wait for a oppurtunity to attack the carrier. Tell the Nightknife, Darkdread and Seaskimmer to converge on their position and attack them when possible. The Seaserpent, Underhand, Darkdagger and Unseen threat can start mining the west area between Phillip Island and Kingston."

Yablinko paused for a moment. Could it be that the enemy had splitted the fleet? He would take the change. "And tell the Bonerattler and Ragnarok to attack as well."

As the com officer relayed the orders he knew he had forgotten something.

Vice-Admiral Flavian orders submarines SeaWolf and SeaKing to submerge and seek out and disable any enemy submarines.

5 Anti-Submarine helicopters take off and begin to sweep ahead of the Fleet for subs.

3 Harriers take off and begin to seek and destroy any forces mining the area.

Vice-Admiral Flavian ponders his decision to split the fleet

The Captain of the Flagship informs the Vice-Admiral radar has detected several Piranha-class ships approaching at high speed.

Vice-Admiral tells the Escort Cruisers to move ahead of the Flagship and prepare to attack.

OOC: Gallafrey piranha-class are subs.

IC: "Sir, radar reports that helicopters and Harriers were launched."
"Tell the Scoron to launch all its airplanes. And tell the Mowtaw and the Manticore to dispatch there ASW helicopter. When will they be in range of the guns of the Griffen?"
"In a few minutes, sir."

Vice-Admiral Flavian orders course change.
"Keep us out of range of the Griffen"

Under orders the Captain of the Flagship Freedom launches 10 Harriers with orders to intercept any enemy aircraft on intercept course for the fleet. The anti-submarine helos on patrol report multiple sonar contacts, possible submarines in area and alter course to intercept.
The 5 remaining anti-submarine helos are prepared for take-off.


The Frigates have taken position around the carrier and begun searching for submarines.

The Vice Admiral gives new orders to the submarines,
"Avoid contact with enemy submarines, rig for silent running and close on emeny Battleship to disable."
The Destroyers have left the Fleet and begun searching for enemy mines, and minelayers.

"The Scoron has just launched all its aircraft, Sir."
"Good, the first wave will take out their fighters and the second will attack the ships. Tell the Mowtaw and the Manticore to launch their Yakhont-3 anti-ship missiles on the cruisers." Moments later both the Mowtaw and the Manticore fired 8 missiles each. Both had targeted a different ship. Meanwhile their ASW helicopters where dropping sonar buoys in the sea. They sended their data back to the Saratogi for analyses.

On the Grimrise
"Captain, the carrier has stopped moving. 4 other ships stopped moving as well."
"Are they in range of our torpedoes?", asked captain Jansen.
"Only on a lower depth sir and all the noise in the water indicates that they have begun to search for us."
If that was so then it would be only a matter of time before they found them. "Blow the ballast tanks and flood torpedo tubes one and two. Fire on the carrier as soon as we are in range."

Now the Bonerattler and Ragnarok arrived followed by the Darkdread and Seaskimmer. They all cut their engines and moved further on momentum only. But the Bonerattler and Ragnarok stopped too late and they were detected. The fact that their captains hadn't dived deep contributed to that.

"Sir! , radar detects 16 missiles incoming! , 8 targeted on each Crusier."
"Tell the Missile Cruisers Poseidon and Aries to target the incoming missiles!"
Moments later both Cruisers began to launch 32 surface to air missilies, 2 targeted on each incoming missile.

"Sir radar has detected incoming enemy aircraft, closing on the fleet"
Seconds later the Harriers changed course and increased speed to intercept.The 17 remaining Harriers are readied to take-off.

The submarines SeaWolf and SeaKing meanwhile slip past the 2 escorting Corvettes and close on the Griffen. Each sub floods 2 tubes and prepares to fire.

The 5 patrolling anti-sub helos are dropping multiple sonar buoys and have 2 solid contacts identified as Bonerattler and Ragnarok.
Two Frigates, Spectre and Prowler launch 2 torpedoes at each sub then increase speed to intercept.

The 3 Minesweeper Destroyers have found mines and begin to clear the area.

The Vice-Admiral sighs and thinks "Here we go"

Moments later both Cruisers began to launch 32 surface to air missilies, 2 targeted on each incoming missile.

"Sir radar has detected incoming enemy aircraft, closing on the fleet"
Seconds later the Harriers changed course and increased speed to intercept.The 17 remaining Harriers are readied to take-off.

For the Bonerattler and Ragnarok it was too late. They tried to evade the torpedoes and launch counter-measures but were too late.

On the Grimrise
"Captain we are in range of the carrier."
"Then fire and load tubes 3 and 4."
"Torpedoes away, sir, 3 and 4 loaded."

In the air the first wave of 10 F-8 Stingray's made contact with the 13 Harriers. They all launched a missile at them.

On the Saratogi
"Sir the Mowtaw is getting a contact that is defintly an enemy sub and it is inside the fleet. We also detected 2 explosions, we think they were ours. The three destroyers have arrived at our minefield and they have begun to clear it."
"Tell the Mowtaw to fire its depth-charge rockets and decoy rockets, now!" If there was one there could be two. How did they pass the buoys undetected? "And tell the [i]Grippen to fire its guns and a volley of rockets at those destroyers. The ASW helicopters can fire their torpedoes at them too." Moments later the Grippen's 9 16-inch guns began to fire on the destroyers and launced 4 Tomahawk missiles at them.

The 13 harriers began to take evasive action to evade the incoming missiles, but for 2 it was too late. The remaining Harriers and Stingray's began to engage in a fierce dogfights.

The Seawolf and SeaKing both fire two torpedoes at the Griffen, then dive and increase speed preparing for the inevitable counter attack.

Onboard the three Destroyers alarms signalled incoming missiles. Two ships launches one Sea-Dart surface to Air missile at two of the incoming missiles, but on the Nundah a computer malfunction meant they could not launch any missiles. Two of the incoming Tomahawk missiles were destroyed, but the two remaining slammed midships into the Nundah.

The remaining two Destroyers increased speed and came about and headed away.

On the command carrier , alarms were sounding and Vice-Admiral Flavian ordered flank speed to try to evade the incoming torpedoes and braced for impact .The Frigate Viking had gotten two more sonar contacts possible submarines and changed course to intercept and fired two torpedoes at one contact

The F-8 didn't come out of that fight well. 4 lost within seconds but now the second wave of 10 Stingray's came in to range and fired their missiles at the Harrier's.

Griffen immediately began to fire decoys and they succeeded in taking out 2 of the torpedoes. Another one was taken out by a decoy rocket from the Mowtaw but the fourth hit the ship.

"Damage report."
"One torpedo hit us, sir." We are taking water and will sink within the hour."
Captain Vries: "Inform the admiral that we will launch all our missiles at the 2 cruisers. And start firing them." Moments later the Grippen began launching 3 volley's of 4 Tomahawks and it's 16 Harpoons.

On the Saratogi
"Admiral, the Griffen was attacked by 2 subs. She was hit and is taking water. Vries has told us he is launching all his missiles at the enemy cruisers."
"Very well." This was not good. He had already lost 2 subs and now the only battleship in the navy for one louwsy destroyer. "Tell the Mowtaw and the Manticore to get those subs. And tell the Griphin to join us."

Meanwhile the four subs that had finished laying mines noticed the destroyers and 3 of them began to chase them. Only the Unseen threat had picked up the torpedo attack and started hunting the enemy subs.

Finally the Nightknife came into range of the frigates and cut her engine. The other two subs that were already there both launched 2 torpedoes at the frigates that had taken out the 2 subs which had arrived before them.

THe Command Carrier launched decoys and continued to take evasive actions and successfully took out the incoming torpedoes.
The anti-sub helos began to drop huge amounts of soanr buoys in an attempt to detect the attacking subs.

"Vice-Admiral, Radar reports 28 surface to surface missiles inbound!"
"Order the missile cruisers to launch their remaining anti air missiles. Then order the Posiden to launch it's 8 Harpoon missiles at the Corvettes"
Within seconds the Poseidon and Aries began launching their remaining 25 Anti-air missiles, the the Poseidon launched it's 8 Harpoon missiles at the Corvettes.

On the Command Carrier, the remaining 14 Harriers took off and headed for the 2nd wave of Stingrays knowing it would be too late to save the first wave of Harriers.

The two remaining Destroyers slowed and began a active Sonar search for submarines.

On the Grimrise
"They got them, sir."
"Damm. Are tubes 1 and 2 reloaded?" asked captain Jansen.
"In a few seconds, sir" "Then fire all 4 torpedoes at that carrier."
"Torpedoes loaded and fired, but I am hearing a lot of sonar buoys sir they must have located us."

The Mowtaw and the Manticore detected the 8 missiles coming towards them. They immediately fired 5 missiles each at them and took out 6. The other 2 should have been taken out by the CISW system but that system failed on the Manticore and both missiles impacted before decoys could be launched. One hit their CISW system the other one their Yakhont-3 missile system.

On the Griffen
"The destroyers are slowing down."
"Then fire our main guns at them."
6 16 inch guns took aim on the destroyers and began firing.

Meanwhile admiral Yablinko began to notice that his captains finally began to take some initiative. "Tell the Mowtaw to fire its remaining anti-ship missiles at those cruisers." The last 8 Yakhont-3 missiles left the Mowtaw.

The Nightknife now launched its 4 torpedoes at the frigates after the 4 that the other 2 subs had fired.

The 10 anti-sub helos immediately detected the 4 torpedoes heading toward the Command Carrier and launched decoys which confused the guidance systems on 3 of them the forth slammed into the rear of the Carrier starting a fire. They then detected a contact and identified it as the Grimrise and launched 4 torpedoes .

"Direct hit Vice-Admiral to the stern quarter!!"
"Damm-it , damage report!!", called the Vice-Admiral as he picked himself of the deck..

The Misslie Cruisers detected the incoming 8 missiles and knew their only defence now was their PHALANX systems, as the missiles came into range 6 were taken out. The remaining two slammed into the bridge of the Aries which within seconds was on fire from bow to stern.

The Frigates increased speed and began evasive action while launching decoys in the hope to escape damage.

The Captains of the Destroyers realised their mistake when then barrage of 16 inch shells came raining down. The Destroyer Nambour took the brunt of the attack and quickly broke apart and sank. The Nudgee managed to escape out of range with minor damage to the steering and headed back toward the fleet.

The Grimrise tried to evade the torpedoes by diving and launching decoys but only one torpedo was fooled. The other 3 destroyed the the sub.

In the air the second squadron launched another volley of 10 missiles at the Harriers and then changed direction to face the Harriers that were rushing to aide them.

On the Saratogi
"Sir, we destroyed one destroyer and damaged another and took out a cruiser. We are also picking up explosions near the enemy carrier."
"Have the corvettes found the subs yet?"
"No, sir but they are using active sonar and should pick them up shortly."
"Tell the helicopters to aide in the search and tell the Griphin to change course and attack the frigates."

Meanwhile the three subs that were chasing the 2 destroyers noticed that they were picking up speed and retreating. Only the Seaserpent and Underhand were able to fire their torpedoes at them. 8 torpedoes sped towards the destroyers.

OOC: Gallafrey I would like to know what happened to the missiles that the Griffen fired.

OOC: Wetland weren't the missiles the Griffen fired the ones that destroyed the Missile Cruiser.

The first wave of 11 Harriers tried to evade and lose the 10 missiles but for 6 it was in vain. The remaining 5 changed course in pursuit of the Stingrays.

The Seawolf and Seaking both fired 2 torpedoes to finnish off the Battleship, then dived and attempted to slip away.

The Destroyer Nudgee's steering was getting worse and hit 3 mines and began to take on water.

The Frigate Cobra took all torpedo hits and began to sink.

On the Command Carrier, the Vice-Admiral was relieved to discover the damage to the Carrier was minor and repairs were underway.

THe Anti-Submarine Helos increased their search for the remainig Submarines.

OOC: No the missiles that hit the cruiser came from the Mowtaw. You had launched 25 anti-air missiles at the missiles from the Griffen but you never said what happened to them.

As the 5 remaining Harriers gave chase to the second squadron, the first squadron got a chance to fire their missiles. They had lost 3 more in the dogfight but now the last 3 Stingray's of first squadron fired two volleys at those 5 Harriers. Second squadron fired their last 2 volley's and then accelerated.

The four torpedoes were picked up by the corvettes who began firing decoys as did the Griffen. One torpedo managed to get through and hit the screw of the Griffen disabling it completely. Now the corvettes knew where the torpedoes came from they began firing their depth-charge rockets on that area. The Unseen threat too fired its four missiles at the subs.

The Nightknife, Darkdread and Seaskimmer reloaded and quickly fired 4 torpedoes each at the frigates. 12 torpedoes now hurried towards the frigates. The Griphin now came into range and launched 8 Yakhont-3 missiles at the frigates.

OOC: Sorry I lost track of them. The 25 Anti-air missiles destroyed 25 incoming missiles and the remaining 3 lost target lock and fell short .

The 5 Harriers had no chance and were detroyed.

The Seawolf went to full speed and attempted to escape but the four missiles hit astern and the sub began it's last dive. The Seaking dived and rigged for ultrasilent running to evade the depth charges.

The frigates launched decoys and attempted to evade the incoming torpedoes and managed to take out 4 , but the remaining 8 hit the Spectre and the Viking ( 4 on each Frigate), disabling them. The 8 surface to surface missiles all struck the Prowler which exploded and sank.

The Destroyer Nudgee had managed to make repairs to halt sinkng but was now totally disabled.

The anti-sub helos had now located the Nightknife and Darkdread and launched 3 torpedoes at each then returned to the carrier to reload sonar buoys and torpedoes.

On board the Carrier the Vice-Admiral was starting to wonder if the situation could get any worse.

On the Saratogi
Admiral Yablinko was quite happy now. Things had seemed to go a bit a miss in the beginning but things looked better now.
"Ok what do we got left and what have they?"
"Sir, we still have our 3 corvettes and the Griffen. Unfortunatly only the Griphin has 8 anti-ship missiles left and the Griffen is sinking. We have 13 Stingray's left and 7 subs.
The enemy lost one cruiser, 13 Harriers, 2 frigates and we think we got one of their subs. Their carrier is damaged and so are one destroyer and 2 frigates. However one cruiser, one destroyer and one frigate are not damaged."
"Tell the Griphin to launch their last 8 anti-ship missiles at the cruiser." Moments later these missiles sped towards the Poesiden.

Meanwhile in the air the 3 Stingray's of 1st squadron fired their last missile at the carrier and then turned back to the Scoron for refueling. The 2 ASW helicopters now reached the area where the sub had to be and dropped their last sonar buoys.

The Nightknife and Darkdread launched decoys and tried to evade them. For some reason the 3 torpedoes aimed at the Darkdread all hit one of the decoys that the subs had launched. Unfortunatly for the Nightknife this meant that there was nothing to stop the 3 torpedoes aimed at her. She was destroyed.
The [i]Seaskimmer[i/] and Darkdread now both fired 4 torpedoes at the frigate that still moved.

The Darkdagger now fired its 4 torpedoes at the disabled destroyer while the Underhand and the Seaserpent began chasing the other destroyer.

OOC: If my summary of what we both got left isn't correct say so and I will correct it.

OCC:It's OK

The Destroyer Nudgee dropped decoys but being totally disabled was doomed.

The other Destroyer began dropping depth charges in the hope of get the subs in the area.

The Phanlanx system on the Carrier began firing destroying the incoming missile.
The Submarine SeaKing slipped away from the 2 ASW helos and headed headed toward the enemy command ship.

The frigate detected the 4 torpedoes heading toward it and dropped decoys and managed to destroy 3, the forth struck the frigate midship and caused servere damage.

Onboard the Poesiden Missile Cruiser, the Phalanx system had developed a fault and was inoperable, the 8 missiles all struck the cruiser which exploded and broke up and sank.

Meanwhile the 2nd wave of Harriers were ordered not to engage enemy planes , but attack the enemy Command Ship.

OOC: Gallafrey my 2nd squadron already fired 20 missiles at the Harriers.

The Darkdagger now joined the hunt for the last destroyer.

The Griphin changed course too and closed in on the carrier as did the Seaskimmer and Darkdread.

On the Unseen threat
"Any trace of that other sub?"
"No, sir. We are picking up splashes from sonar buoys and the 2 corvettes are using active sonar too but they haven't found her yet."
"Then we will add our own noise to the chore and hope they don't make a mistake. Active sonar, one ping."
"Yes, sir."

The 20 missiles raced toward the harriers and destroyed all but 3.
The 3 remaining Harriers continued toward the enemy command ship.

The ASW helos finally detected two contacts and identified them as Seaskimmer Darkdread and immediately dropped 3 torpedoes right on top of them.

The sole remaining Destroyer now closed on the Flagship.

The sole remaining submarine the SeaKing had managed against all odds to close on the enemy command ship and now prepared to fire.

The Vice-Admiral contacted the Admiralty by sattelite phone for instructions.

On the Grippen
"Sir, we have to leave. The ship wont stay a float much longer."
"Is that destroyer coming back?"
"Yes, sir"
"Ok, tell everybody to abandon ship except the guncrews on the forward turrets. Tell them they have to aim for that destroyer and take it out."
Now 6 of the main guns on the Grippen were aimed at the destroyer and began firing while the rest of the crew abandoned ship.

The [i]Seaskimmer and Darkdread had no chance and were taken out by the torpedoes. But the helo's now came into range of the Griphin's SAM's and he fired 5 at them while his main cannon was being aimed at the carrier.

On the Saratogi
Admiral Yablinko noticed that the enemy made a desperate attempt to take his ship out. "Tell the Stingray's to forget about the Harriers and go back for refueling. The corvettes will take out those Harriers."

In seconds the corvettes both launched 5 SAM's but the Manticore experienced another system's failure which ment it couldn't launch any missiles.

Meanwhile the subs that had chased the destroyer couldn't believe there luck when it turned about and came their way. Immediatly the 3 subs that were the closest all fired 4 torpedoes at her. Now the destroyer was being met by 12 torpedoes and 4 submarines.

The Destroyer was struck by 12 torpedoes almost similtaneously, and was destroyed with total loss of life.

5 of the ASW Helos were detroyed by the SAM missiles, while the remaining 5 returned to the Command Carrier Freedom which was now comming under fire by long range shells.

The remaining Harriers were destroyed by the incoming missiles

The Captain of the submarine SeaKing was now in optimum firing range, and launched 4 torpedoes at the Saratogi, then immediately reloaded and fired 4 more.

The-Vice Admiral had now received new orders , but by now had no fleet to command .
He ordered the Freedom to come to a complete stop, lower the flag and surrender. He then waited to be boarded.

On the Saratogi
"Sir they are surrendering!"
"That is good news, tell.."
"4 torpedoes inbound, no wait, 8 torpedoes are coming towards us."
The corvettes noticed the torpedoes and began launching decoys. The Saratogi too used all its anti-torpedo systems. 6 were stopped but 2 managed to hit the Saratogi.
"Sir, we were hit. We are sinking and have to evacuate in 10 minutes."
Scales, things just went so well. "Tell everyone that we accept their surrender and get a helicopter overhere to take us to the carrier."
In a 5 minutes the helicopter had picked them up and they were on their way to the carrier.

OOC: Well done. Do you want to try it again but then I will be the attacker? Or do you want to bring in another fleet?

OCC: Yes would like to try it again, but not for a few days I will be busy at work for the next few days.

OOC: Ok, I think you can make the thread that time. Just send me a telegram when you are ready.

IC: After accepting surrender Admiral Yablinko ordered the Grippen, the Saratogi and the Asclepius to go home. Leaving the newly dubbed Norfolk fleet behind.
