The Stone

Mutant Dogs

Colonel Meilara paced up and down the white tiled room. The defensive hideout, known as "The Stone" lay hidden within the great mountain-range just outside the city, which had been evacuated several days earlier. Even from his room he could hear the fighting. Men raging at eachother. Women screaming...

...For three days and nights it had gone on. Pushed over the brink by Mutant Dog's refusal to abandon its nuclear weapons program, White Dwarf had attacked the city. They had held off for a week, before retreating into the stone. Even here, they were suffering in great numbers. Slowly, they were losing the stone. Already a quarter had been seiged...

...Grabbing his pistol from the beside table he left the room at a run. He still had one more plan...

The general whatched as after three days and nights the WD army had finally got a good hold on Mutant Dogs. It was only a few months ago that Mutant Dogs had first stated that they had a nuclear program. And now White Dwarf would show them what happens when a nation refuses to comply with the law.

Since he now had a firm grip on Mutant Dogs the general desided to go with more of a defensive approach. After pulling back his units to the quarter of the fortress he owned the genral began to construct defences. Surely now the army of Mutant Dogs had nowhere to go.

Chief Meilara fumed. Reports had come in that the enemy was using gases and toxins in their attack. He could not bring himself to think of the territory they had lost from that. If he was to last, he needed intelligence.

... The door banged open and Ruub swung the gun around. You could never be too careful. Shocked embarrasment overcame his anger, as he replaced his Remmington on the shelf and saluted the commander.
"We need a sniper," Meilara said at once "you are going to get into the enemies side, and find out as much as you can about their attack plan"

He didn't argue. The time for arguing was long past. Later, when he was given the details, Ruub could only hope that the plan would work.

The general was happy with his new tactic. After setting up defences in all the hallways and corridors he new of the general went on the attack again. The only way to get someone out from hiding is to force them out, this is what the general told himself as he ordered the use of flash bangs and smoke bombs in all areas that mutant dogs units where seen. It wouldn't be long until the person behind the nuclear program would be found.

Accomponied by six stealth tactic fighters, Ruub made his way carefully through the stone. This was no-man's land. Unclaimed territory, where both sides had backed off from a battle. Before, he would have flagged the area, but he had his orders.

"Put them in the corner," he ordered a young soldier, who promptly set down what he thought was a bomb

The first bullet took him in the neck. There was never any chance for the boy. Someone else went down while the team was still gaping. The fighting started

"Positions!" Ruub yelled over a rain of fire

His team fell to the ground, switching on their night-vision. They were difficult to see in mostly black, but Ruub recognised the white head-band that the enemy wore. Working quickly he fired three bullets into one of them, holding a sub-machine gun.

It only lasted minutes. The enemy hadn't predicted them here, so they hadn't had any major advantage. Still, his team had fell just as fast as them. There was only one soldier left alive. Dragging him to his feet, Ruub hurried him along and out of the area.

"General, another report from the front," a soldier told the general as he handed him a message.

"Lets see it ........ ok then. Tell the fronts to watch out for any more of these bomb strikes" the general told the soldier.

---

Back on the fronts the soldiers examined their recent battlefield. There where 5 bodies just lying in their own pools of red, among these people where also bombs. After studying the area the men knew what to do. After launching a couple of flash bangs followed by smoke bombs the men went down to where they thought the bombs where.

Time passed, and the smoke was running thin so this left the troops with retreat as their only option and because of this they made it out with no bombs.

Ruub adjusted the head-band which he had stolen from one of the fallen White Dwarf soldiers. It was too small and kept slipping up his head.
"Eat up," he said, throwing a loaf of bread over to Nurimi
They had been sitting atop a stack of carts and barrels for three days now, either sniping skirmishing teams, or, if they were too large, simply hiding from them. They were waiting from intelligence back at base. Or so Ruub told the young operative. The truth was much more bleak...

...Chief Meilara flicked open his gold-tipped lighter. After a while he closed it again and walked outside. Still no news from Ruub. He was either dead or lost, so his advisor's told him. Still, he would wait. The order to send out another spy if Ruub had succeeded could be catastrophic. He would wait...

"Sir, another skirmish team has come back," a messenger told the general as he came running up,
"Yes, and"
"They have two casualties,”
"Ok, call back all skirmishes"
"Yes sir"

---

"Ok mean, halt here,” the Skirmish Leader told his men,
A sigh of relief came form every man as he dropped his bag. The same one he had been carrying for the last half an hour as he patrolled the hallways.

As the group was packing up one man fell down. No one knew what happened; no one heard anything but the release of air from the soldier mouth as he started to release blood.
"SCATTER" yelled the Leader as the group picked up the two men and ran for the halls.

This was the largest group Ruub had seen so far. He knew he his only chance would be to scare them off. Aiming carefully he released a bullet into one of the soldiers located in the middle.
"Scatter!" someone yelled
He sighed with relief at the command. He would have had his team locate the enemy with only one shot fired. Obviously their tactics differed from his greatly. For better or worse he didn't know. He shot another soldier in the hamstring, and then another in the head when he came to help him. After a count of thirty he hopped down and moved along, careful to make no sound. The soldier writhed on the ground, groaning with pain. Grabbing him by the shoulders, Ruub dragged him behind the carts. He then extracted the bullets and put the soldier under a heavy morphine. At last he would have insight into the enemies tactics. He almost smiled.

This made the general furious, having wounded brought back was ok, but having men becoming POW was an outrage, so he would fix this. He would flush out the Mutant Dog army.

"Macquarie," the general yelled at a man sitting behind two laptops that where hocked up to dishes,
"Yes general,"
"Release the assault squads, all of them. Tell them they may play by their own rules"
"Yes sir,"

This relaxed the general. No one had ever stood up to the assault Trudy’s and survived. However this was a building and that Trudy’s always fought on open ground so even though they where dreadnaughts, coming through 2 by 2 would be a problem.

--

It wasn’t long until the once quiet battlefields of hallways became a stampede ally way. Down the halls, 2 by 2 came these gigantic beasts. The once cute house pet of the white dwarf families was now a 7-foot beast running through the mountain carrying AK – 47’s. The beasts never did specialise at long range fighting. They liked to run in firing their guns in front of them or in the air hoping to hit someone. Once close they would let the gun hang by its sash then jump at the enemy ripping at the creature till it died. This is what the general wanted, no one makes his men into POW.

Nurimi shook Ruub awake.
"Somethings coming!"
Up in a flash, Ruub had his gun out and was kicking aside his sleeping bags. He switched on his nightvision. It was becoming a habit of his to leave them on when he slept. Zooming in, he shook his head in disbelief. Nearly one hundred of them if he counted correctly, although coming through two by two's. They must be the savages men spoke about, although few ever returned to speak.
"Use you're longshot," he ordered Nurimi "Shoot them in the neck and only the neck. When they reach thirty yards throw your grenades and use you're A.K."
He nodded, and went to take his place atop the carts.
If this doesn't work, Ruub thought to himself, I'll have to infiltrate, and leave the boy
He looked ahead coldly.

The monsters ran down the hall, footsteps echoing ahead. They ran until a shoot was fired. The front two where hit but still ran on. After two more shoots the Trudy's started loosing balance and fell to the ground, but being the monsters they are the Trudy's ran on trampling their dying companions. After one more Trudy was shoot and fell to the ground the rest opened fire, the front ones shooting in front, the ones behind shooting at the wall and roof.

The sound of war filled the hallways, waking all the WD soldiers. The sound was normal and horrible, bullets mixed with the screams of a beast that looked and sounded like a bear crossed with a small dog.
"So, it has begun," the general said to himself, "Now is the time where we see who is stronger"
Getting up from his bed the general made his way to the food court where the command centre was set up.
"Foreshore," the general yelled into the court. Foreshore was the only man on duty and he was sitting on the far side of the court,
"Yes General" came a reply,
"Call up the front CC," the general told Foreshore as he got closer, "tell them to prepare the copies,"
"Yes sir."

Ruub didn't know how long the fighting had gone on for. Nurimi had thrown the first grenade, clearing up ten of the beasts. When they ran out of explosives, the monsters still pushed forward and Ruub had taken out his A.K. He would be dead now, had it not been for the back-up team, ten days late. As it was, he was one of the only few people alive in the hall. Nurimi was shaken but fine. As for the team, seven of the twenty had been ripped apart, and another six shot dead before they realised what was going on. Ruub had a mission to complete, and he intended to do it. He had sent one of the soldiers back to base, to inform the Chief of their success. The rest were merely escorts, to get him into enemy territory. Him and Nurimi would be the only ones inside, as besides having the sufficient training, wore the white head-bands.

Seven days later, and three men down, showed them deep into enemy grounds. There was no line, declaring where one side owned - this war was a maze of fighting through unknown halls. At that point, Ruub ordered the team to return, and regretfully disposed of his remmington, taking up an enemy gun. He also had to get rid of the supplies they were keeping, let alone change clothes and wear a dead man's militia tag. His only chance was to eliminate all risks. He had learned the passwords, hand signals and entry codes off the soldier he had captured, he just hoped he had not been fooled.

Ruub banged on the door, and called loudly
"As the hammer hits the anvil shall we break the stone"
After a moments silence the door slid open and they were rushed in...

The hallway was small, just the right size so that four men could walk side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder. Dividing one side of the hall form the other was a steal door. On the WD side of the door two men sat behind a sand bag wall that covered the hallway halfway both in width and height.

As the men sat, talking about anything that came to mind a knock came to the door,
"As the hammer hits the anvil shall we break the stone"
"The password" one man said as he grabbed his rifle and aimed it over the sand bags at the door whilst the other grabbed his rifle and hit the button to open the door.
After the door opened up two men ran in.
"Lower your weapon, there WD soldiers" the man at the button said, "What where you two doing in these parts"

---

The assault squads continued to run around the hallways of the stone, smashing lights and bringing down Mutant Dog barricades, this war seemed to be coming to an end fairly quickly.

---

The General sat at his table. He had been sitting there for hours and was getting impatient,
"General," a man said as he ran at the table,
"About time," Replied the general, "Did you get through,"
"Well general, Offworld Militia, 2, 6, 7 and 8 aren't where they should be. They're not even in any sector around the motherland. They are gone."
The news shocked the general. If the offworld Militia was gone that means that they would not be able to call on the help of Minister Toro or Supreme General A.
"Where they destroyed,
"No General, there is nothing there,"
"Well, I guess we will have to make do with what we have. Call back all squads except the assault squad. Start doubling defences and leave the offence to the Trudies,"
"Yes General"
The man left the table and ran back to where he came from,
"What on the Motherland has happened" the General thought to himself.
