1 x 3"/40 AGT (76mm OTO Melara)
2 x 20mm Legion CIWS (2 x 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS)
2 x 7.62mm GPMGs
Armour: 80mm Re-enforced Fibreglass
Builders: Navarre Navy Shipyards
Design: Trimiran mine-hunters with a limited mine-laying capability.
Designed for long-range missions.
The Africa was a joint project headed by the Prime Design Warfare staff to
fulfil a requirement for a long-range mine-hunter by the FNS and a
trimiran-design commercial mine-hunter/layer requirement of the Doujinshi
Corporation. The result is the excellent Africa class Mine-hunter.
A re-enforced fibreglass hull was chosen to both reduce weight and provide
protection against magnetic trip mines. Twin direction-adjustable jets,
large steering gear and bow thrusters provide excellent manoeuvrability in
tight areas, and three anchor cables are built in to provide extra stability
when needed. An entirely new gyroscope arrangement has been manufactured
just for the Africa in order to maximise stability when it is needed most.
Onboard weaponry and defences are excellent for the standard for Mine
Warfare vessels, and provides comprehensive close range protection against
airborne and littoral combat threats. Standard electronic warfare modules
are fitted, and, as expected, top of the range sonar and the accompanying
computer gear is fitted as expected.
The powerplant is a standard diesel turbine with electrical back-ups. Range
is excellent for a vessel of this size, even at high speed, making the
Africa class exceptional Mine-hunter escorts.
Aside from mine-hunting, the Africa class has limited mine-sweeping,
mine-laying, and general patrol capabilities. A helipad provides vastly
improved on-station avaliability and Anti-Submarine Warfare capability for
any customer using the Africa. All in all, a comprehensive and versatile
unit capabale of fufilling all basic Mine Warfare needs.
