Reclamation of Radioactive Wastelands

VNN News

Today in Novaya Valkonezh, a radioactive wasteland previously purchased by the government for reclamation, a field test was conducted with a genetically modified Deinococcus Radiodurans bacterium strain and ever since it has been released, radiation levels have been rapidly decreasing, making it the first bacterium strain to withstand the millions of Gy of radiation and be used in a full scale reclamation of a radioactive wasteland. The bacterium itself is non-pathogenic, and the human immune system can easily dispatch of it in moments. Truly a remarkable advance in environmental research.

The government will now continue with it's plans to use the land for agricultural use to provide a critical source of food so that the country will no longer rely on trade for it. Researchers assure the people that within the month, the non-pathogenic bacterium strain will consume enough radiation to discard any fear of irradiation or mutation.

To commemorate this achievement, a forest reserve will be constructed where the radiation was once highest. Scientists and environmentalists alike now look to cleansing Northern America of it's underground nuclear wastes, reclaiming Chernobyl into a habitable environment, and converting nuclear wastes from countries with nuclear powerplants into less toxic elements.

The United Socialist States of Radivostok commends Zvarinograd for their amazing achievement. Should you require any assistance in this endeavour in the case of manpower, our troops use 'Petrovya' exoskeletons that are capable of withstanding chemical, biological and nuclear areas, being completely airtight and filtered. Do not hesitate to ask if you require extra manpower.

Sincerely,

Radivostok Diplomatic Minister

(OOC - and if anyone mentions anything about my country being too young to produce such stuff, I bought the specifications and technology - at $5,000 dollars a unit, its possible for me to build it.)

While we thank you for your kind offer, the reclamation requires highly trained personnel, as the reckless handling of the bacterium strain can cause problems for any other environments than radioactive wastelands. While humans are immune to the bacterium strain, we are not certain that it is non-pathogenic in other lifeforms. (However, we know that it does not affect plantlife and livestock, as engineered by our researchers, we are simply not sure of it's effects on non-domestic lifeforms.)

We respect your decision and wish you luck in your reclamation of the wastelands. If you decide otherwise at any point, just contact us.

Sincerely,

Radivostok Diplomatic Minister

The people of White Lotus Eaters are delighted that one of our neighbours in the Urbanites Region has developed and produced such interesting and useful bacteria.

Fortunately we have no need of these ourselves, but are willing to offer loans at low rates of interest - pegged to the regional rate of inflation - to enable nations whose economy has been devastated by nuclear war or accident, to clean up contaminated areas for residence and farming.

There is one condition: when a country has successfully used this technology and paid off its loan to us, it should offer a loan to another nation on the same terms. Hopefully this will allow this technology to promulgate throughout NationStates without lack of finances proving a constraint.

OOC: Tag: I did try to tag this earlier but I think I messed up the post as the whole forum crashed. I'm going to keep an eye on this one cause I've read the earlier work...
