Firestorm-class Bombardment Ship Mk.II

Sea Dragons Inc. is proud to unveil their newest creation yet, the Terran Firestorm-class Bombardment Ship. The Bombardment Ship was designed from the ground up to support marines during landing operations. Realizing that most modern navies lack the heavy cannon support that was once provided by Battleships, this vessel's designers went back to the drawing board and devised a vessel that is both fast, powerful, and economical.

Most modern navies today are forced to rely on small, 5" cannon or less; while this is enough for engagements on the high seas, it is not adequate for supporting troops while they land. Likewise, launching a salvo of cruise missiles can end up costing more than both the ship they were launched from and the target that they destroyed. Pound for pound, heavy cannons are the support weapon of choice for landing operations. The Firestorm-class is outfitted with 4 turrets of 16" or 18" cannon, for a total of twelve barrels capable of delivering several tons of ordinance from many miles away. Two smaller turrets of 12" cannon can be used to keep away any enemy watercraft attempting to attack.

The vessel's superstructure is low profile, to make it far less likely that defensive cannons can cripple the Bombardment Ship with a lucky hit, and is exceptionally well armored. Equipped with state of the art uplink systems and an exceptionally powerful bank of supercomputers, a Firestorm-class vessel can recieve, collate, and display information from a variety of sources. By coordinating their fire with landing forces on the ground, surveillance or spotter aircraft, satellites, and radar systems aboard neighboring vessels, the Firestorm is capable of piecing together a remarkably detailed map of the battlefield...and then directing extremely accurate firepower onto any location.

This vessel is extremely well armored, with at least 8" of armor plating, and at least 14" around the bridge. There are very few windows or weak points in the entire vessel. Firestorms have a normal crew complement of only 920. Autoloaders improve the rate of fire for the guns, and free up crew members. Ammo is stored deep within the hull of the Bombardment Ship, in a massive double-walled compartment. Directly behind the superstructure is a MCC, or (M)odular (C)argo (C)ompartment, adding to the incredible versatility of the Firestorm. A variety of modules can be fitted into this large area, including a second ammo compartment, a Vertical-Launch Missile System, or a helicopter service-and-launch hanger. These modules can be swapped out in as little as 24 hours, and are purchaseable seperately. The shells fired by these cannons are extremely versatile, and can be fitted with high-explosive, biological, chemical, or even tactical nuclear warheads. Discarding-sabot shells equipped with a rocket engine propulsion unit could theoretically attack targets up to 100 nautical miles away; the standard shells have a maximum accurate range of 26 nautical miles.

The Firestorm-class is an exceptional vessel, more than adequate for supporting invasions. We guarantee that you will be pleased with the performance of these powerful ships, and believe that they will be a great complement for any Battlefleet.

Thank you for your order. There is a variant with a helipad, it is an optional module that fits into the vessel and allows you to service and deploy up to eight helicopters. This module comes free.

As you are a young nation, we offer you a prefered payment plan: 550 million per year, for 6 years. This will allow you to keep a fairly good military budget, yet still acquire these vessels early. The shipyards will have your three vessels completed soon, and they will be delivered with 24 hours of completion. Once again, thank you for your order.
21-02-2004, 17:42
The Rogue Nation Of Jebeddo would gladly buy 5 of the vessels outfitted with a secondary ammunition bay, the helipad/helicopter system, the special forces module, and the command module..... We'll wire the money to you upon confirmation of the order.

Seeing as how you are a new nation, we suggest that you wait a bit before attempting to acquire one of these vessels. However, if you'd like, we can produce them for you at a rate of one per (RL) day. This will give your budget some time to recover between purchases. Your order has been confirmed, and the modules will be delivered seperately aboard cargo freighters. Thank you for your business!

This warship would be excellent for a naval war which we are most likely going to get involved in. We would like five of the vessels. One with a marine module, two with Helicopter modules, one with a command module, and the last one with a 64 cell vertical launch system.

Is rush delivery available? We need them asap.

*6,680,000,000 USD will autowire upon confirmation of the order*

OOC: First let me state that the concept is nice, and it does look like some effort was put into this, but there's quite a bit that should be changed.

For starters, that's waaaaaay too small for the amount of equipment put onto it. That ship's about the size of a Colorado Class Battleship, which maxes at about 38,000 tons. This mounts well over twice the firepower (assuming only 16"), and much more armor than that ship, and has a 35% speed increase. You naturally greatly underestimated space requirements.
This ship, if it's to be capable of mounting 12 18" guns and 4 12" guns, would have to be in the range of 2.5-3 times that displacement. We're probably looking at a 40-50% increase in length and a 70-80% increase in beam from what you mentioned. The crew is also too small. Even with our best concieved automation, it takes 100 or more personnel to staff a destroyer (and many feel that such low manpower is inviting a great deal of trouble). This ship would require at least a few hundred crew above what you stated to oversee operations, perform maintenance, etc. It's way too big for 220. I'd probably go with about 700. The reduced crew requirments compared to similar ships will allow for the extra space for ammo and other add-ons, engines, and sensors, but that's it. It won't let you make a smaller ship, plus there are stability concerns with that type of armament and how top-heavy you've made this, so you want it to be big. Finally, you should at least triple the cost. A DD(X) destroyer is over $1 billion, and this is a lot bigger.

On more specific things:
If it has an AEGIS system and additional sensors, at least double the cost of the command module. The AEGIS system alone costs more than that.
You've gotten the range of the shells a little off. For the Sabot projectiles, they can probably go to about 100 nm (115 statute miles/185 km). That's the range of the ones proposed for the Iowa. However, the standard shells are going a bit too far. Put them at 26 nm (30 statute miles/48+ km).

I won't bother with how the picture should be fixed. That would probably be asking a bit much.

(ooc: Thank god, CSJ. I've been dreaming about everything that's wrong with this boat. First off, the picture...that's a disaster, with everything from the dimensions to the gun locations. The cannons aren't meant to hang over the bow...:?

Secondly, I'm going to work revamping the ship, and applying the changes you suggested. Say goodbye to fitting this thing through canals...

Many thanks, CSJ; I was wincing when I wrote this thing up, as I wasn't really sure of what would be realistic right now. If you ever want one of these ships {Unlikely, you have an excellent naval storefront}, it's available to you at the unbelievably low price of one dollar...call it codesigner input.)

IC:

Anybody who ordered the Firestorm-class Bombardment Ship previously, be aware that it has undergone a substantial(!) upgrade...especially in terms of price. Any previous buyers will recieve the new Firestorm Mk.II for the original price of the Firestorm as compensation for the delayed orders while shipyards scrap old hulls and get to work on the new ones.

In addition, any previous buyer has the right to cancel their order, as long as it is cancelled before delivery of their new vessel(s). The new price will be instated from this post onwards. Finally, we may look at selling production rights to a large or trusted nation. We wish you all well (especially CSJ),

Sniper Country: Just the nation I was looking for! The Republic of Ancient Terra will gladly give the production rights for the Firestorm-class to Sniper Country. The price is negotiable. If possible, we would like to remain the sole vendor of these vessels, but you are allowed to produce and give these vessels to your allies.

Crossroads Inc: Your order has been confirmed, and you can indeed afford to purchase these ships. Shipyards are hard at work, you can expect delivery soon, upon confirmation of money transfer.

Glatannia: We thank you for your discretion in purchasing numbers suited to your economy, and would like to remind you to return and purchase more of these ships when your budget allows. Any additional purchases will be given at 15% off. Your order is confirmed, and the vessel will be delivered soon. Thank you, everybody.

We agree, but reluctantly. Omz222 was a former ally of ours, many years ago. However, we have seen the forces of Sniper Country in action. If you believe that action is warranted against Omz222, then there is obviously reason for it. The money wire has been confirmed. For immediate use, we have ordered a completed Firestorm, the ATN Logrim, to sail to Sniper Country. There, it may be renamed and repainted in your country's colors, and our skeleton crew will board a commercial aircraft and return to Terra.

The schematics, operational data, registration certificates, training simulators, and performance notes have been loaded into a An-225 Cargo Aircraft. It will arrive in Sniper Country in approximately 24 hours, where possession of the construction plans will be turned over to your designated representative.

We wish you good fortunes, and please assess the performance of these vessels during live combat. We guarantee that you will be pleased; the armor, specifically, guarantees total protection against most anti-ship missiles. :D

Of course. Although the Firestorm is not a full battleship (although she is larger, and in many areas more powerful, she isn't designed for full on naval combat), we believe that your engineers will benefit greatly from our turret and navigation schematics. You may also want to study our hull design; the long, wide hull ensures extreme accuracy, even in rough seas. We have also sent information to you regarding the special modules, which should provide you with some extra insight into Vertical Missile Launch Systems, Command & Control Systems, Helicopter Facilities, and Crew Housing.

The information is currently enroute, aboard a secured An-225 Cargo Plane. Please inform us if you have any questions.

I have a query. How many compartments will the ship allow to flood, before she starts to sink?
Being a nation with a large and powerful navy, this is quite important to our admiralty.
22-02-2004, 14:24
The Peoples Republic of Not quite Belfast wish to procure one of your vessels. The peoples economy is, to say, a mute point at this time due to the rampant degradations of our socialist regime. We would ask that the aquisition of a single vessel by our small province be on a loan repayment scheme at a price you deem worthy at this time.

We would also ask that you reduce the number of 16"/18" gun emplacements to 1 (located Forward). The removal of the 2 aft gun turrets is to allow the bridge and ship interfaces to become sunken into the rear hold of the ship thus reducing the profile of the ship. The removal of one of the forward gun turrets is to balance the weight displacment created by the removal of the rear turrets and their alloted munitions. The modular system we require is the marine/ special operations modification. Whether or not said modifications are possible is of course up to your research and development teams. If they are not possible we will purchase said ship with said modification at a normal price.

The people of NqB await your decision.

Respectfully

Chao Master: Your order is confirmed, and the money has been recieved. We will begin delivery of your vessels, and their included modules, soon. Thank you for your order.

Skidetenland: The vessel can withstand five flooded compartments before she begins to sink. Although this is not as much as many naval vessels, the firestorm is intended to operate close to shore, in shallower waters. Moreover, her extremely thick armor renders her nearly impervious to most common shore-defense artillery.

Not Quite Belfast: Our engineers have begun the modifications on the vessel, to your exact specifications. The reduced profile modifications make it far less likely for a lucky shot to take out your command crew, however your firepower has been reduced by approximately 70%. Still, this vessel will make a formidable command ship. Due to the removal of both rear gun turrets and their respective ammo chambers, we were able to fit two marine/special operations modules into your vessel. Marketing has come up with a loan that requires payment in 10 years (10 RL days); by then your economy should be stabilized. Due to the modifications done on your new vessel, the price was reduced to an even 3 billion dollars, including interest. Thank you for your order!
