SHTURM (STORM) SELF PROPELLED ANTI-TANK GUIDED MISSILE SYSTEM

http://www.army-technology.com/projects/shturm/images/shturm5.jpg

The Shturm-S Self Propelled Anti-Tank Guided Missile System, designated 9K114, is a multi-purpose tracked armoured vehicle, model MT-LS, armed with a semi-automatic command to line-of-sight (SACLOS) anti-tank missile.

MISSION

The system engages moving and stationary armoured targets, such as modern tanks and infantry combat vehicles; anti-tank missiles; air defence missiles; hardened targets and field fortifications such as pillboxes, concrete and logged emplacements; and slow speed low flying air targets such as helicopters.

The Shturm-S system is a self propelled, automatically loaded launcher, which operates in direct visibility conditions. The system can fire while stationary, on short halts and while afloat.

An airborne version of the missile system, Shturm-V, has been developed to equip helicopters such as the Mi-24 and the Ka-29. Up to eight missiles can be carried. A shipborne version consists of a launcher for six Ataka missiles with stabilised optical sight.

MISSILE SYSTEM

The missile uses a semi-automatic radio-command guidance system, which is highly robust against hostile jamming. The radio guidance system is encoded and the pulsed infrared tracking signal provides protection against active jamming. The Shturm-S missile is outfitted with the Pyl software programme that ensures the missile proceeds on an overfly trajectory until it approaches the target, allowing the gunner to acquire and maintain tracking on the target in limited visibility conditions.

The vehicle carries twelve missile rounds and can prepare to fire in 15 seconds. The rate of fire is 3 to 4 rounds per minute and reloading is automatic. The system can engage airborne targets with approach speeds to 80km/h and cross speeds to 60km/h.

SHTURM MISSILE

The Shturm missile, which carries the designation 9M114 and is known by the NATO designation AT-6 Spiral, is a 130mm calibre anti-tank missile with a range of 400 to 5,000m. The monoblock, shaped charge, blast-type warhead provides an armour penetration of 560mm. The missile approaches the target with a speed of 400m/s.

ATAKA MISSILE

The Ataka missile, which carries the designation 9M120 and NATO designation AT-9, is an upgraded version of the Shturm missile. It is fired from existing Shturm launch vehicles. The Ataka has a longer range of 6,000 and is slightly heavier. Warhead options include a tandem shaped-charge HEAT (high explosive anti-tank) warhead for deployment against advanced main battle tanks provided with explosive reactive armour (ERA), a blast warhead to defeat light armoured vehicles, field fortifications and small ships and a rod warhead to engage helicopters and other air targets. The Ataka missile also equips the Mi-28N combat helicopter.

SELF-PROTECTION

The BMP-3 can also be fitted with the Arena Defensive Aids suite. The system consists of target detection and tracking radar, computer and processing unit and protective ammunition. The system is automatic: the radar passes tracking data to the computer, which selects the number of ammunition rounds and controls firing. The selected ammunition is then expelled as a directed field. The vehicle can also be fitted with the Shtora defensive aids system which counters anti-tank guided weapons with SACLOS (semi-automatic command-to-line-of-sight).

The hull and turret are constructed from aluminium alloy armour. Protection also includes steel external straps fitted on the turret, side armour displacement panels and a double-bottom at the front of the vehicle. NBC equipment includes a filter ventilation unit as well as hermetic sealing. This system is located in the rear of the vehicle, as is the ejection cooling system which, coupled with the reduced length of the gas ventilation system exhaust, serves to reduce the tank's thermal signature.

FIRE CONTROL AND OBSERVATION

The fire control system is automatic with manual override for both gunner and commander. It includes a 1V539 ballistic computer, 2E52 electro-mechanical armament stabiliser and 1D16 laser rangefinder. The gunner has a 1K13-2 main sight, a combined image-intensified day/night sight and PPD-1 standby day sight. The commander has a 1PZ-10 day sight and TKN-3 combined day and image-intensified night sight.

PROPULSION

The engine is the V-shaped UTD-29 diesel engine, which produces 500hp. The transversal mount of the engine enables the wheel drive, cardan shaft for the waterjet drives and electric bilge pump to be located underneath. Transmission is hydromechanical with a hydrostatic gearbox for the steering gear and power take-off for the water jets.

The BMP-3 vehicle weighs 18.7t and is capable of a maximum speed of 70km/h and range of 600km on roads.

Slav-V MAIN BATTLE TANK

The 65t Slav-V main battle tank entered full production in 2003 and began operational training with the Bosnian Defence Forces in December 2003. It will begin operational deployment in mid 2004 prior to service entry early on in 2004. The Ministry of Defence will manufacture between 50 and 70 Slav-V tanks per year and initial estimates indicate that up to 400 tanks will be manufactured. The Slav-V has been extensively improved including new armour protection and gun and electronics systems.

The Slav-V is not offered for export but the systems, components, and designs are.

The tank is capable of carrying eight infantry soldiers, a Command Group or three litter patients (stretcher casualties) in addition to the tank crew of commander, loader, gunner and driver. The tank is capable of firing on the move at moving targets and has demonstrated high hit probability in firing against attack helicopters using conventional anti-tank munitions.

TANK WEAPONRY

The Slav-V has a new all electric turret developed by BOAR Tech. Only one hatch is installed in the turret, the commander's hatch.

The improved 120mm smooth bore gun has also been developed by our leading engineers. The new gun is an advanced generation of the gun developed for the Slav-IV. A Vidco thermal shroud on the gun reduces bending of the barrel resulting from environmental and firing conditions. The gun can fire higher power munitions including new 120mm high penetration projectiles and guided shells. The loader can select semi-automatically the ammunition type. The tank carries 48 rounds of ammunition each stored in a protective container. An electrically operated revolving magazine contains 10 ready-to-fire rounds.

The range of ammunition includes APFSDS-T M711 (CL 3254), the HEAT-MP-T M325 (CL 3105) and the TPCSDS-T M324 (CL 3139) supplied by the Ammunition Group of BOAR Tech. The gun is also capable of firing French, German or US-related 120mm rounds.

The tank is fitted with 7.62mm machine guns and an internally operated 60mm mortar system developed by the cheif designer of the Slav-V. The mortar can fire explosive and illumination rounds to a range of 2,700m.

The protection suite includes an advanced electromagnetic threat identification and warning system.

BOAR TECH FIRE CONTROL

The new fire control system, developed by BOAR Tech, includes very advanced features including the capability to acquire and lock onto moving targets, even airborne helicopters, while the tank itself is on the move.

The computer controlled fire control system includes line of sight stabilisation in two axes, a second-generation television sight and automatic thermal target tracker, a laser range finder, an improved thermal night vision system and a dynamic cant angle indicator. The commander's station is fitted with a stabilised panoramic day and night sight. The integrated operating system includes advanced data communications and battle management. BOAR Tech developed the Slav's communications system, the inter communication system and the VRC 120 vehicular transceiver radio with embedded auxiliary receivers.

GD 883 V-12 DIESEL ENGINE

The Slav-V is powered by a V-12 diesel engine rated at 1,500hp. The engine compartment and one fuel tank are at the front of the tank and two fuel tanks are at the back. The new engine represents a 25% increase in power compared to the 1,200hp powerpack installed on the Slav-IV.

The tank has automatic five-gear transmission rather than four gears as in the earlier Slav series. The single position rotary shock absorbers are installed externally.

HULL

The redesign of the hull around the installation of the new powerpack has provided improved frontal armour protection and improvement to the driver's field of view. For improved reverse driving the driver uses a camera.

A new feature of the tank is that the fitted modular special armour covers the turret. The tank is protected against a range of threats, including air launched precision guided missiles and advanced and top attack anti-tank weapons. Automatic fire detection and suppression has been installed. The underside of the hull has been fitted with additional armour protection against mines. The driver and crew compartments are equipped with heating and cooling air conditioning and a BOAR Tech combined individual and overpressure protection systems against contamination by NBC warfare.
