HEAVY/LIGHT ARMOR
M1 Abrams MBT- Main Battle Tank
The hull of the M1 is of advanced armour construction and gives protection against ATGWs (Anti Tank Guided Weapons) and other battlefield weapons. The fire control system includes the laser range finder, solid state digital computer and stabilized day/thermal-night sight. The stabilisation system permits accurate firing on the move.
The main armament is equipped with a muzzle reference system to measure the bend of the gun. Information from a wind sensor mounted on the turret roof and a pendulum static can sensor at the turret roof is fed automatically to the computer, together with inputs from the laser range finder and the lead angle. The battle sight range, ammunition type, barrel wear, muzzle reference compensation, barometric pressure and ammunition temperature are all manually set.
The turret has been designed to accept the standard 105mm M68 series gun or the German Rheinmetall 120mm smooth bore gun(US designation M256). The 105mm M68E1 gun fires the standard ammunition used in the M-60, as well as the more recent M735 APFSDS-T round, M774 APSFDS-T and M833 APSFDS-T depleted uranium round and the M737 TPDS training round. Mounted coaxially to the right of the main armament is a 7.62mm M240 machine gun, to the left at the commanders station is a standard 12.7mm Browning M2 HB machine gun. SA-8 'Gecko' (9M33 Osa)
The SA-8 has a slender cylindrical body with four smaill clipped delta control fins situated forward on the nose, and four fixed in-line clipped delta tail fins. The TELAR vehicle has a crew of five and a maximum road speed of 60km/h and 8km/h in water.
The missile has a 19kg HE fragmentation warhead that weighs 130kg at launch, and it is fitted with two beacon transponders mounted on the rear fuselage. The radar system associated with the SA-8 NATO designation is "Land Roll." and consists of an elliptical rotating surveillance antenna mounted on top of the array. Mounted on either side of the tracking radar antenna is a small J-band parabolic dish antenna to track the missile. Below this is a small circular antenna which emits an I-band uplink capture beam to gather the missile shortly after launch. The final antennas in the array are two small white rectangular ones, one on either side of the array mounted alongside the I-band. These are used for command uplink to the missile. This twin antenna system permits the radar to control up to two missiles at once against a single target. The two missiles can also be guided on different frequencies to further complicate ECM.
Once launched, the missile is command guided for the whole flight, and the warhead is detonated by its proximity fuse or possible command. The warhead is said to have a lethal radius of 5m at low altitude against a F-4 Phantom-size target.
Price: $500,000 each launch vehicle
